This was nothing like they had fought before. Not even J'onn had heard of this alien before. That's why what happened came at a shock. What happened was not expected at all.
"W'o dat?" the little girl asked, pointing to the gun ( that was huge in comparison to her now-small hand ) she was holding. Kara's eyes widened in shock and she quickly yanked the gun out of her hand. The little girl teared up and started crying. "I-i-it not nice'a snatch!" she whined.
Kara was at a loss. What the hell?
"Erm… J'onn. We have a situation," Kara said as she looked at the little girl again. She had stopped with the crickadike tears now and was instead playing football with the small piece of debris on the ground.
"What is it Supergirl?" he asked.
"Something has happened to Alex and I don't know want to do. She is now smaller and- and fast— oh Rao, she is really fast!" J'onn heard wind rush and so he assumed she used her super speed to catch up.
"Just get back here"
"No! Ag- Alex. Alex stay still!" said the doctor as she tried to look over the small child.
"No! I won' du' 's' ge'wl!" Alex instead as she crossed her arms. "She w'uks w'ike my sister!"
The doctor and Hank shared a look. It sounded all weird. The things she did remember weren't consistent with a steady timeline. She looked around 4 but she remembers Kara yet she doesn't remember that Kara is the 'S girl'.
"How about, I'll get the 'S girl' if you let the nice doctor check you out," bribed J'onn. Little Alex grinned brightly and nodded her head.
"Yes! Yes! Yes!" she said excitedly, jumping up and down on the examination table.
"Sit down then," J'onn said, hiding a laugh. Alex nodded dramatically and plonked herself down before crossing her arms and letting the doctor check her ears and eyes.
J'onn found Kara in the training room with her head in her arms.
"How come you're down here and your sister is up there?" he asked casually. Despite her super hearing, Kara jumped and looked at J'onn in a panic. She calmed when she realised it was only J'onn.
She shrugged, "Don't want to get in the way," she mumbled.
"Hey, I know I am an alien too, but I don't have super hearing. Speak up," he joked. Kara didn't even have the energy to look at him, let alone laugh.
"I don't think I could handle if she can't remember me," she whispered, a tear falling down her cheek. J'onn sighed and sat next to her.
"She won't stay that way forever," he said, taking her softer tone. "We will change her back,"
"Mm. But how long will that take?" she asked rhetorically. "I wouldn't even be able to last a week knowing that my sister doesn't remember me,"
"Then it's a good luck she remembers her Kara," J'onn revealed with a smile. Kara looked at him with a grin on his face.
"Yeah?" J'onn nodded and Kara genuinely looked happy.
"But she doesn't know you're Supergirl," J'onn added.
Kara's grin faltered, "What?"
"I'm the med bay. She was wondering where the the 'S girl' was and that's he looked like her sister," Kara closed her eyes and rested it on J'onns shoulder.
"How do I do this J'onn?" she asked. J'onn didn't know what to say. How were they going to turn her back to normal? Was Alex going to stay as a four year old forever?
When they both arrived in Alex's room, the de-aged Hero saw Lara and started to clap. "Yesss!" she said with a huge, toothy smile. "Wahooo! Hey! Hey! Did you know that my w'oom is gon' be 'WED! N' there is gonna be b'ack and—"
"Hey Alex?" interrupted Kara. The little girl stopped her word vomit and looked at Supergirl.
"Yeah-ah?"
"How do you feel about coming home with me for a little bit?" she asked. Alex looked like he was considering it when she got nervous.
"Bu' wha'bout my mommy n' sis'er — Kawa?" she asked with a frown.
"Your mommy was amazing and said that you could stay with me for a little bit. While she gets your sister sorted," Kara answered quickly. Alex frowned and moved closer to them, she studied her face before breaking out into a smile.
"Ooh yes. Do you want to stay with Supergirl for a little bit?" asked J'onn.
"Otay!"
Kara cast a glance at J'onn; how was this going to be explained to Maggie?
"Are you sure you can handle this?" J'onn asked as he helped Kara hold the booster seat.
"Yep!" Kara announced optimistically. He looked suspicious but nodded and left.
Kara opened the door and the four year old walked in first. "You has a nice home Super," the little girl said. Kara chuckled.
"Do I?"
"Yep!" Alex then started to run and have a look all over the house for things to do.
"Colouring book?" she offered, sitting Alex down and giving her a colouring book with an assortment of colouring penciald.
The door then opened and Lena walked in. "Why did J'onn wish me good luck as I walked up the stairs?" Kara winced and let Lena in.
"Oh…"
Alex had dropped the pencil and was hanging off the end of the table like a monkey. Her legs were wrapped around the pile under the table and her hands were held onto the edge of it.
"Alex Danvers!" Kara yelled. She super sped over and picked the hit up bettor she could fall and hurt herself. Alex started laughing.
"Again! Again!" she begged.
Kara scoffed and placed her on the sofa. "Haha. As if!" Alex pouted and moved away from Kara. "Aw shit!"
"Hhh!" Alex yelled after hearing the older girl swear. "You says a nor'e (naughty) worded!"
"Oh no. I'm sorry," Kara apologized.
"Is al'wight. At home, we had a swearin' jaw. You say a s'ear word n'den you have to put a dollar in'da- da'-da—"
"Jar?" suggested Kara.
"Yes! How did you know?" she asked with a ligh.
"Well, little girl, we don't have a jaw but I can just buy an ice cream every time?" she suggested. Alex have a cute, high pitched voice.
"Deal!" she said really, really loudly.
Kara looked at the microwave, 6:50pm. If Kara remembered correctly, Kenny said that his cousin used to go to bed at this time when he was a baby. Maybe she should put Alex to bed?
"Alex, baby?" she called.
"Yeah Super?" she replied. Oh yeah, she hasn't told her who she was yet. Maybe it should stay this way.
"Wan' go bed byes?" she asked sweetly. Alex stuck her nose up at it.
"NO!" she then ran off and sat on the sofa.
"Listen, it's nearly 7pm. You need to go sleep," Alex still rushed and started to kick her legs when Kara picked her up.
"No! No! No!" she screamed, kicking her legs. She caught Kara so many times but she didn't fe anything.
"Alex! Stop It! You've been good all day! What's wrong now?" Kara asked; why did people have so many kids? Alex crossed her arms and let Kara carry her to the bed. Kara sighed and checked the time. Lena should be back any time now ( she had left to go by some rails to put either side of the bed so there isn't a chance of Alex falling out of bed ) so they were going to watch a movie when Alex went to sleep.
Alex whimpered and clung onto Kara. "I don't wanna see du' mons'ers," she whimpered. Kara's heart broke at her sisters little pout and sad eyes.
"I'll be there with you," she assured her.
"Nooo *crie* p'ease no! S'sy 'wake!" she cried. Kara cradled her and tucked side to side. What was going on?
"Sssh," she comforted.
"I don' won' to go s'eepies Super. If- If I do… 'den all du' baddies come out n- n 'tack me! I don't wike dat'!" she said adamantly, getting louder and firmer.
Maybe she had some of her adult memories and some of them include memories of battles with aliens. Now that Alex has, essentially, been deaged, her mind is immature; her mind is a baby meaning little things can scare her and that all the monsters her adult counterpart faced… will do their usual show in Alex's nightmares… they also show in baby Alex.
"Kara! I'm back!" Lena called. That was the final straw. Alex jumped and started crying.
"Sssh. Calm down Alex," she whispered, rubbing the back of the young girl. Alex kept crying and snuggling into her. That's when Kara's phone rang.
"Oh for fu("agahah" cried Alex) sake!" Kara yelled out — she was sleep deprived and gettingg overwhelmed with everything.
"I've got it Kar," Lena said softly, pulling her in for a gentle hug.
[ Maggie: ] hey Kara
Do you know where Alex is?
I have tried
Ringing
Texting
And none of them worked
I'm worried
Lena told her what it said and so Kara told her to send something back.
[ You ] Hi Maggie. It's Lena. I think you best come over to Kara's apartment as it's a little bit […] complicated
[ Maggie ] Lena?
okay
I'll be there in 10 mins
"Maggie is on her way," Lena called.
"Huh? Maggie?" Alex called, wandering into the living room area from behind the curtain at the bed.
Kara came out behind her, "Yeah. Erm… she's a friend," she replied half heartedly. Alex looked at her oddly.
"I wuuuuuuv Maggie," she said with a fond look in her eyes. Kara and Lena caught each other's eye and then both looked at Alex. "Wot? She is sooooo pwetty an' kind an'- an' pwetty— wait, I 'ready said that!" she then laughed and sat on the sofa with her little legs swinging back and forth.
"Alex, can you please get into bed?" Kara begged.
"No! I don' wanna see baddies AND I wan' see Mags!" she yelled and then sat on the sofa with a smug look at Kara's defeated one.
"You haven't looked after a toddler, have you?" Lena asked with an amused look.
Kara sighed, "I looked after Kal—" she stopped talking. Lena still didn't she was Supergirl. Rao. "I looked after my little cousin but he was only a baby. Like, one years old. When my parents died, I was out into foster care and I never saw Callum until a couple years ago," Kara hated lying to Lena but she couldn't tell her. It would be too much a risk for Lena. Lena gave her a sad look whichh Kara waved off; she didn't deserve the sympathy. While her story wasn't completely wrong, it still felt awful to lie to her best friend.
They heard Alex laugh. Looking down, they saw she had found a robot? Oh crap. It was an old Kryptonion robot from the Fortress of Solitude
"You have a robot… under your coffee table?" Lena questioned. "How have I never seen that before?"
Quick Kara, think!
"It's from Alex's work. We got a little too drunk a couple days ago and we decided to mess around with It. Guess I forgot it was there," Kara said with a nervous laugh and a neck scratch. Lena looked suspicious but accepted it.
There was a knock on the door and Kara opened it to find a frazzled Maggie. She stormed through despite Kara's calls.
"Wait. Maggie wait—" but it fell on deaf ears.
"Where is my girlfri..end…" it trailed off at the end when she saw a little girl kneeling on the sofa staring at her. "Uh.. hi," she said with a shocked wave.
"Hewo Mags!" she said enthusiastically with a big, cheeky grin. Maggie pivoted to see Kara face palm and then to the side to see Lena with her head buried in her arms on the kitchen table. "Do you wan' colour wif' me?" she asked innocently, clambering off the sofa to grab the coulding book off Kara's bedside table.
"I will definitely colour with you… I just need to talk to Kara," she replied.
"Otay," Alex replied, walking back to the living room.
Maggie walked over to the kitchen and glared at the two younger woman. "What. On. Any. Planet. Happened?!" she ground out. Lena bit her lip and sent a look at Kara who was fiddling with ber glasses. "No? It's fine, I'll ask J'onn.."
"Okay, okay. We don't know what happened," Kara replied. She cast a subtle glance at Lena. "J'onn and Supergirl came over and said that they were fighting a weird alien and… poof," she said with actions. Maggie groaned and rubbed her head.
"Maggie! Hu'wy uuuuup!" whined the four year old. Maggie shot them daggers ("It wasn't my fault! I'm not even that close to this Shaun guy!" Lena protested. "Lee, it's 'Zh-on'. Like 'John' but with the 'Zh'," Kara supplied. "Not helpful Kar," the woman muttered) and walked to Alex. "Yaaaaay!"
"What are we colouring in?" Maggie asked, sitting cross-legged on the floor. Alex kneeled down and handed Maggie a dark blue Crayola crayon.
"Hmm… you do dis side n' I'll do dis one!" she said, pointing to the picture of the house and a sun and grass along with an assortment of garden activities. Maggie said 'ok' and started to colour in the pool in blue. Alex started colouring in her picture (a rocket ship in space) with yellow for stars. Maggie grabbed the green crayon for the grass when Alex grabbed it out her hands.
"What was that for?" she asked, not realising she was starting an argument with a (technically) four year old over a wax crayon.
"No! Not 'lowed g'een! G'een is bad! G'een hurt Kawa!" she shouted, getting louder. Maggie looked shocked at the outburst and her face didn't change when she lobbed the green crayon and it ended up nearly assassinating Lena.
"So even four year olds have it out for me," she joked, getting it off the floor.
"Alex! We don't throw things," she scolded. Alex looked sad but ran to Kara and hugged her legs.
"Bu' Kawa. G'een is bad! It hurts you!" she insisted. Kara could see she was getting distressed and her memories were all jumbled. "It hurts you," she whispered tearfully.
"What's she talking about Kara?" Lena asked. Lena put the coloured crayon back on the coffee table. Kara bent down and picked Alex up, the little one wrapping her small legs around Kara's waist and her arm around Kara's neck — her left arm was kept close to her body becausee Alex started sucking her thumb. Kara didn't know what to do so she started sweating side to side — it's something she saw her aunt do with Kal-El.
Maggie frowned and stood up ( her knees definitely click ). "Is she talking about krypto?" she whispered. Kara nodded. She rubbed her head and walked over to the fridge.
"Why was Alex saying green would hurt you?" she asked.
Kara shook her head, great, another lie, "Just something that happened when we were watching younger. I was ambushed after school once by this guy on the football team. Him and the whole team sprayed me with paint balls. They were green," again, not the whole truth…
( the paint was a mix of red and orange )
Lena pulled her in for a hug but Kara could feel her heart pounding with every second this day went on. "Kar, she's asleep," Lena suddenly said. Kara took a small glance and saw Alex fast asleep with her thumb still in her mouth. Kara floated a little and glided over to her bed before setting the toddler down and setting cushions either side.
Kara walked back to the front and collapsed on the sofa. "I am never having kids," she complained.
