Chapter 4: Professor's Teachings
I can't believe that they made me look over this mock battle. Jeralt thought, letting out a sigh. Well, at least I get to see my kids kick some ass. All of the houses were at their stations, waiting for the signal to start. Then he noticed that Byra was walking towards him. "Byra, you are not participating?"
"Blue Lions have more students than the other houses, it is only fair that one of us steps out," Byra said. "I volunteered to not to participate."
"Really? I was hoping to see you in action with your brother." Jeralt said.
"There is always another battle, Father." She said. Sorry By…
Late last night…
"I was thinking that you will be with the Prince to infiltrate the Black Eagles' base," Byleth said. "I was going to put Ashe or Sylvain out. We have a better chance of winning with you in the battle."
"No…" I said.
"What?" Byleth said. "What do you mean no?"
"Brother, I know that you are being protective of me because of the incident at the dormitories." She said. ¨I did not get hurt.¨
"I will kill anyone that tries to hurt you again. They will never find the body." Byleth said.
"Thank you but I feel that putting me in this mock battle will give me more problems," I said. "Also, your students are strong."
"You got a point. I also do not want to belittle my students. I believe in my students one hundred percent." Byleth said.
"I know you do. They are improving fast in their skills and it is all because of you." I said. "So showcase their skills tomorrow and show Mr. Strict that you are a good professor."
"Thank you, sis," Byleth said, placing his hand on my shoulder. ¨Well, will you be okay sitting at the sidelines?"
¨I will be fine," I said.
"I know there are other battles but I was looking forward to seeing you two fight," Jeralt said, patting her head. ¨But then again, I see you in action all the time and I am very proud of you."
"Father, thank you," Byra said.
"Oh, have something for you. I was going to give you two a gift after the mock battle." Jeralt said, pulling out a small bag from his satchel. "I did some hunting a few days ago and I know how you like this." He gave the bag to her and she blushed. It was bear jerky.
"Oh Father, these are my favorite." She said, blushing in front of him.
¨I know." He said. You have no idea Byra how much you remind me of your mother. She happily ate one piece of jerky.
"Are you sure it was wise to omit Byra in battle?" Ashe asked, looking nervous. I still need more training with my bow. I am not ready for this. "She is kinda one of our strongest allies."
"Ashe, do not doubt your abilities," Byleth said. "You all are skilled and strong in your special way." Byleth noticed that some of his students were a little nervous about the mock battle. He took a deep breath and clapped his hands. "Alright now, we are going up against tough opponents so we should not underestimate them or put our guards down." He noticed that both Annette and Ashe were still worried. He walked up to them and patted their heads. "You two will be fine. I believe in you both.¨ He then turned to his other students and said, ¨I believe in all of you." That speech made his students inspired. They smiled and the nervousness swiftly faded. "Do you all know the plan?"
"Yes Professor, I will be with Sylvain and Felix on the left side of the base," Ingrid said.
"With this trio, no one can't beat us," Sylvain said.
"Just don't get in my way. I am looking forward to fighting strong opponents." Felix said.
¨Remember, this is a mock battle so please do not go overboard." Ingrid said.
"I will be around healing anyone who is injured," Mercedes said. "But I will also be in the long-range team."
"Yup, Ashe, and I will be with her. We will protect her when she is healing." Annette said.
"Dedue and I will protect the right side of the base," Dimitri said. That is where Eldegard's house will be. I am looking forward to battling her.
"Your Highness, I will make sure that no harm will come to you," Dedue said.
"Thank you, Dedue but I believe in the Professor's plan. The other houses will expect us to attack them one by one. But we are going to divide into teams to take over each house at the same time." Dimitri said, letting out a chuckle. "It sounds crazy but I think we can pull it off."
"We are crazy," Felix said, letting out a smirk. "I am pleased with this plan. I can't wait to get out there."
"Listen up, I know we only have only a few weeks to prepare but I know you are all strong enough to win this," Byleth said. ¨So do your best out there.¨
¨Yes Professor…" They all said.
Good luck, Brother…
Thanks, watch my back while you are analyzing everyone.
I will. I have nothing better to do.
Jeralt made his way to the middle of the arena. Byra was a few inches away from him. "Alright, I will be the proctor for this mock battle. As you all know that we will only be using training weapons for this match. The wooden weapon has a special spell cast on to it.¨ Jeralt explained, turning to Byra. ¨Byra, can I please use you as a demonstration¨ She nodded her head and walked beside him. He was holding a wooden sword. He tapped Byra on the arm and her arm turned blue. ¨Blue means that you are immobilized. The spell will stop you from using any body part that turned blue.¨ She tried to move her arm but she could not. ¨The only way to get rid of the blue mark is by a healer. Healers have a limited amount of magic but I will explain that later." Byra placed her hand on her arm.
¨Heal." She said. She healed her arm and the blue mark was gone. She moved her arm freely.
¨The red marks are what you want. Critical attacks to vital parts of the body like the head, heart, chest, etc will result in a red mark. If you have a red mark, you are out of the battle. Also, healers cannot heal red marks. For mages, you only can use a limited amount of your power. Spellcasters are given a bracelet with a green gem. Once the gem turns red, it will stop you from doing any magic. So please be mindful of how much magic you are all using.¨ He explained more. ¨Each house has a flag and the goal is to protect your flag and steal your opponent's flags. The first house with all three flags wins this battle."
I know that we are going to win.
Confident are we? You do not have any doubt about your brother and your classmates.
Hello, Sothis. It has been awhile. I have no doubts.
I am glad you are comfortable hearing my voice. You two usually jump with a shock when I speak.
Well, when you have another person in your head. It is shocking but I do not deny your company. I enjoyed it.
Then I shall stay and keep you company.
Thank you
"Alright, let the mock battle begin," Jeralt said. The Blue Lions stand in formation while the other houses make their moves. He turned to Byra. ¨Byra, thanks for helping me out. Letś go up the hill so we can get a better will of the mock battle.¨ She nodded and followed him up the hill.
"None of your shallow tactics are required, Claude. Ignatz and I will dismantle the opposition." Lorenz said, grip on to his wooden staff.
"Me? But, I am not ready!" Ignatz said nervously.
"Are you making light of our new professor?" Claude said, letting out a sigh. "If you drop your guard, you are going to get hurt."
Brother, two students from the Golden Deers are coming to the left side of the base.
Good. I believe that the Black Eagles will do the same.
Ignatz is an archer while Lorenz is armed with a lance.
"Dorothea, will you head toward the front lines?" Eldegard asked. "I wish to draw the enemy towards us."
"You got it, Edie, leave it up to me," Dorothea said, making her way to the right side of the base.
"Ferdinand. Hubert. If the enemy comes, I want you to stop them. Bernadetta and Linhardt will stay at the base while Petra, Casper, and I will protect them." Edelgard ordered.
"Leave it to us, although I can do this on my own," Ferdinand said.
"Clearly not, or her Highness would not ask to watch your back," Hubert said.
Just as you predicted, Brother. The Black Eagles are coming your way. Two magic casters and a spear user are going to attack the right side.
Things are going according to plan.
"Felix. Sylvain. Lorenz and Ignatz are coming your way. Ingrid, I need you to sneak around to their base while they are distracted." Byleth said.
"Right!" They said.
"Dimitri. Dedue. Ferdinand, Hubert, and Dorothea are coming your way. Ashe, I need you to shoot them down when they get close." Byleth said.
"Will do, Professor," Ashe said.
"Mercedes, things are going to get messy so get ready to heal. Annette, protect her at all times." Byleth said.
"Yes sir…" They said.
The Blue Lions are probably going to attack the Black Eagles so it is only logical to attack them while they are distracted. Lorenz thought. He then noticed Felix and Sylvain waiting for them. "What? Why are you not attacking the Black Eagles?"
"Are you disappointed?" Sylvain teased, gripping his wooden spear.
"I do not like this at all, Lorenz," Ignatz said.
"Sylvain, let's finish this," Felix said. He speedily raced towards Lorenz and swung his blade towards him. Lorenz deflected it with his spear. "I see that you are not all talk, Lorenzo."
"It is Lorenz."
"Whatever…"
"I think it is me and you Ignatz," Sylvain said.
"So it is," Ignatz said. "I won't hold back." He started shooting arrows and Sylvain dodged every single one of them. How is he dodging everything?
Thanks to the Professor, dodging arrows is a breeze.
"Ouch!" I screamed.
"Sylvain, you need to concentrate." The Professor said, letting out a sigh. He put down his bow and walked up to me.
"I am trying," Sylvain said. "I thought I was supposed to dodge arrows not catch them."
"With little time, you were able to predict the trajectory of an arrow. I am impressed because it is not an easy thing to do." He said.
"So why am I doing this?" I said.
"To clear your mind and not overthink things. You are either distracted or overlooking that task at hand. Hmmm…" He mumbled, thinking of what to do. I am good at fighting but he was more focused on my defense and agility. He then snapped his fingers. "Mercedes. Ingrid. Annette. Byra. Can you ladies come here for a minute?"
"Yes Professor, is there something you need?" Mercedes asked.
"I hope we are not in trouble," Annette said.
"I do not think we are in trouble," Ingrid said. Byra nodded with agreement.
"I need you four to stand behind Sylvain." He said. He then whispered something to Byra and Annette. They nodded and stood behind me.
"Sylvain, you consider yourself a ladies man correct?" The professor asked.
"Of course, they can't get their hands off me." I teased.
"Then protect them. If you do not catch the arrows, they will get hit." The Professor said.
"WHAT?! ARE YOU INSANE?!" I screamed.
"Yes." He said, aiming his bow at him. ¨I thought it was obvious.¨
¨Byra, please convince him that this is a horrible idea." Sylvain said, turning to her. She just gave me a thumbs up while eating a cookie. ¨You are not helping here.¨
¨Get ready, Sylvain." Byleth said.
I thought it was insane. Sylvain thought. Ignatz shot another arrow. Sylvain smiled as the arrow reached him. He caught it. But I can see the arrow. I do not predict anymore. I know where it will hit.
¨How are you able to catch that?" Ignatz asked. He was in complete shock. Sylvain poked him to the chest. His chest turned red.
¨Itś a secret." Sylvain said.
¨Ignatz Victor of the Golden Deers House is out." Jeralt said.
¨I´ve lost. The new professor is quite a commander.¨ Ignatz said, scratching his head.
¨Yeah, he is pretty good." Sylvain said, offering a hand. ¨Good work though."
¨Thanks…." Ignatz said.
Felix and Lorenz were clashing blades and either one of them wanted to back down. Ignatz is out. I am not going to share the same faith. Lorenz thought. I have an advantage. I am wielding a spear while he is wielding a sword. Common battle logic. ¨I am going to end this now." He said. He used all his power to push him away and when he did, he swung his spear towards him.
He thinks that he has the upper hand. Felix thought, smirking in front of him. What a fool…
¨So what are you going to teach me? I already know how to wield a sword." I snapped, crossing my arms. ¨I am already stronger than that stupid boar.¨
¨Yes, you are strong. However, you have a weak point." The professor said.
¨A weak point, I will show you a weak point." I snapped, swinging a wooden sword towards him. He used a spear and quickly unarmed me. ¨How did you?¨
¨Your temper and emotions get the best of you." He said, letting out a sigh.
¨So are you going to give me the same lesson as Sylvain? Are you going to tell me that my temper will get me killed or that my emotions are holding me back? I do not have time for this bullshit." I snapped. I was about to leave until he tripped me with the spear. My face hit the ground and I was outraged. ¨WHAT THE FUCK!"
¨I do not believe temper and emotions are weaknesses.¨ He said. I calmed down when I heard that. It was the first time anyone had said that to me. ¨Theses emotions can be your strength if you can control it. I have a way for us to use it if you are willing to learn.¨ He offered his hand to me.
¨I want to get even stronger," I said.
¨And you will…."
The spear was about to touch him. ¨Fire…" Felix said, blasting a small flame towards the spear. The spear flew away from Lorenz´s grip. Felix tapped his chest with the sword. His chest turned red and the battle was over.
¨You know magic?" Lorenz said. Then he noticed the bracelet on his wrist. I didn't even see that. ¨Ÿou are not supposed to hide that."
¨You are lucky that I did not use my full power." Felix said, creating fire with his palm. ¨Do you want to go another round?" He had a smile that made Lorenz feel uneasy.
¨Iĺl pass." Lorenz muttered.
¨Lorenz Gloucestor of the Golden Deers House is out." Jeralt said.
¨I´ve lost?! Oh! Unthinkable!" Lorenz said, walking away from the field. I will get that back.
¨We did it.¨ Sylvain said, raising his hand to him. ¨High five!"
¨Ï am unsatisfied." Felix said, ignoring the hand and walking passed him. ¨Letś keep going.¨
¨That was mean, Felix." Sylvain said, following behind him.
¨Well done, Teach.¨ Claude said. Sylvain and Felix improved a lot in a couple of weeks. Things are getting interesting. ¨I may have to take this seriously after all." He turned to Ḧilda. ¨Hilda, take Leonie and Raphael and stop anyone that gets close."
¨I am usually not into getting my hands dirty but I have no choice," Hilda said, grabbing her wooden hammer. ¨Come on you two, letś get a move on.¨
¨I can't wait to show Jeralt what I can do," Leonie said.
¨I heard that the new professor is strong. I want to see him in action." Raphael said. They all made their way in the frontlines. Not knowing that Ingrid was hiding, waiting to snatch the flag.
Brother. Leonie, Raphael, and Hilda are making their way to Felix and Sylvain.
I see that they did not detect Ingrid yet. Do you know anything about those three?
Well, Raphael uses his brute strength and gauntlets to fight. He is very strong. Leonie uses a spear and it is very skilled. I heard that she learned a few tricks from Father.
Interesting… I did not know that Father was teaching anyone.
I believe we met her before, in a village.
We will talk about that later. How about Hilda?
She wields an ax and she is very skilled with it. She does not look it but she is not a pushover.
Then I have to send some reinforcements.
Byleth turned to Annette. ¨Annette, I need you to make your way to Felix and Sylvain. I will protect Mercedes."
¨Are you sure?" Annette said.
¨Yes…" He said. ¨I know you can do it." She nodded and made her way to the boys.
Your brother seems to have everything under control. He is becoming a very good professor.
Yes, I am very proud of him. In such a short amount of time, he can do things that no one could not do.
How about you Byra?
What about me?
Is there something you wish to achieve? Do you have a dream?
She stared at her brother and watched how confident and composed he was. All of his students turn to him for guidance and support. I am envious of how easily he can connect with other people. My dream? I do not know what that is.
Just know, child, that I am here for you when you need advice. Do not feel envious or sad. You just did not find your purpose.
Thank you, Sothis. All I know is that I must be on my brother's side. To support him. Maybe one day, I will find it, my dream, my purpose.
Meanwhile at the right side of the Blue Lions´ base. Dedue and Dimitri waited for someone to approach them. I can't believe they are just standing there. Dorothea thought, hiding behind a tree. This is the perfect time to strike. Suddenly, an arrow hit her on the head. It wasn't an actual arrow. The tip was a bag filled with color powder. Red powder was all over her face and hair. ¨MY HAIR!" She screamed.
¨Dorothea Arnault of the Black Eagles House is out." Jeralt said. Dorothea looked around her surroundings but could not find the archer anywhere.
¨My, my, the new professor seems very capable.¨ Dorothea said. Well, at least I can go back and wash my face and hair. Sorry, Edie…
I can't believe it, I hit my target. Ashe thought. She was so far away and I hit her.
I was practicing my archery and it seems that I can only hit my target depending on my distance. I did not realize that Byra was watching me.
¨Are you having trouble?¨ She said. I jumped when I heard her voice.
¨Byra, you startled me. How long were you there?¨
¨Not that long, are you waiting for the professor?¨ She asked.
¨Yes, he just left to get something.¨ I said. She stared at me for a bit and it made me quite nervous. ¨Is there something wrong?" She then grabbed my hands and found me shaking.
¨Are you always nervous?" She asked.
¨Not always.¨
¨Your nervousness gets the best of you when you aim. You will always miss your target with your shaky hands." Byra said.
¨That's what the professor said.¨ I said, letting out a sigh.
¨Do not worry, it is a common thing. I was the same when I first started learning.¨ She said.
¨Oh really? I thought…."
¨I am not perfect, Ashe. I too have to learn and practice new skills to get stronger. Some skills are easy to learn and some take a lot of time.¨ She said. ¨I have to work hard just like you.¨
¨She had problems with a bow while I had problems with magic.¨ A voice said. We turned and found the Professor with a bag of herbs. ¨We may be skilled but we had to work hard to get where we are at.¨
¨And we are still working hard," Byra said.
¨I had no idea," I said. ¨I thought you guys were geniuses. You guys are skilled in everything and have crests.¨
¨We just recently found out about our crests. We don't care about it though." Byleth said. I was stunned. They did not care about their crests. Anyone will kill to have one and these two just belittle it. ¨Crests do not define someone's self-worth or strength. It is what we do with this life that gives us purpose." I was stunned by his statement. His beliefs of crests is a belief I want to follow. "Anyways, I forgot to give this to you.¨ He gave me the bag of herbs. ¨I asked Lady Rhea for a special herb. It helps calm the mind and also nervousness. It might help you."
¨So instead of special training, I just need this," I said, looking discouraged. I felt sad for a moment. He then patted my head. I looked up to him and I swear, I thought I saw a small smile on his face.
¨Nope, you are getting both. I sense potential in you, especially with the bow. We are going to practice until you drop dead." Byleth said. "Also, there is something else I want to teach you."
¨That sounds terrifying." I said, turning to Byra. ¨Help….¨ She just gave me a thumbs up and left us. ¨BYRA!¨
I worked very hard and my skills with the bow. I felt less nervous and more confident that I can hit my target. Ashe thought, standing a few feet away from the sense.
¨Good work, Ashe." Byleth said. ¨Stand down for now and protect the flag with Mercedes.¨
¨Yes sir, Professor.¨ Ashe said, scratching his hand.
I sense someone nearby. Byleth thought.
Brother, Petra is on her way to the flag. She is hiding in the bushes on your right side.
3 o´clock. Got it. She is sneaky. He thought, pulling out a bow. So they were planning the same thing.
Sort of, it is very amusing that they underestimate us.
They have no idea who they are dealing with.
He swiftly shot a bow into the bushes. Petra jumped out just in time to avoid the arrow. ¨How did you know I was hiding in bushes?" Petra said, holding her sword tightly. This professor is no joke. I need to be in caution. I need to be… Then she felt something poking the backside of her head. She turned and found Mercedes behind her. WHAT! I did not sense her. She was holding an arrow and she tapped her forehead with it. Red powder burst on her face.
¨Petra Macneary of the Black Eagle House is out." Jeralt said.
¨Forgive me but I had no choice." Mercedes said, smiling at her. It is because of the Professor that I started to believe in myself.
¨Mercedes, I noticed that you avoid being violent.¨ The professor said. We were at the training grounds and it was finally my turn to train with him.
¨Yes, I feel uncomfortable hurting another person." I said. He then let out a sigh.
¨Mercedes, you are indeed a peaceful and religious person. I know that harming someone is against your moral values." He said. ¨I too wish for a world of peace and tranquility so I do not need to worry about my loved one. That I do not need to hold a blade. However, the world is not like that."
¨Ï understand, Professor. I just cannot bring myself to hurt anyone." Mercedes said.
¨Mercedes, you are a strong and smart girl. You can constantly be overlooked as an easy target or an opponent that is not worth the time." He said. I was hurt when hearing this. The truth hurts. However, I was also happy. I was happy that he thought I was strong. ¨Let me ask you a question.¨
¨Sure?" I said.
¨What will happen if I put a blade into you right now?" He said. ¨What will you do?¨ I was shocked when I heard that question. His eyes turned cold and I was nervous to answer.
¨I will not do anything. I will believe that it was the will of the Gods and it was meant to be." I said.
¨Then what happens if I put a blade into Annette, Ingrid, or all the students in the Blue Lions?" He asked. I froze. The thought of them dying, It was killing me.
¨Professor, I do not know.¨ I stuttered. I then realized that I am going to do nothing. I am going to let someone harm everyone while I watch. I took a deep breath and turned to him once more. "I am going to protect them no matter what." He patted my head.
¨I will never hurt you or the other students. I will also never let anyone hurt any of you. It is good to be positive but in some circumstances, negativity will take over and you have to fight. You have to protect the people you love.¨
¨Professor, were you like me?" I asked.
¨Yes but I learned that I have to make peace not wait for it."
He taught me how to use magic and a bow. I was reluctant to learn but it made me feel independent and strong.
¨That was amazing, Mercedes." Ashe said. ¨I did not realize that you were gone."
¨I learned a few tricks from the professor." She replied.
¨Good work, Mercedes." Byleth said.
Ferdinand and Hubert made it in front of Dedue and Dimitri. ¨Hubert, Dorothea failed in her mission. I am going to prove that I can finish her mission without fail." Ferdinand said proudly.
¨I highly doubt it but go ahead." Hubert said. Ferdinand charged towards Dimitri with his spear but Dedue stopped him from his tracks by throwing a wooden hand ax to him. Ferdinand deflected the ax in time. ¨I see that someone learned a new trick."
¨You are not going to lay a hand on him." Dedue said. Dimitri speedily raced toward while he followed behind him. I will not let another harm him no matter what.
I was not sure I needed some special training. I thought I was strong and worthy enough to protect him.
¨Dedue, you are pretty good with an ax." The professor said.
¨Thank you, Professor."
"But I noticed that you become a meat shield to Princey when he is in danger." He said.
"I do anything for his Highness," I replied.
"Yes, but that is your downfall. People will take advantage of that." He said, letting out a sigh.
"What do you expect me to do? Let him get killed." I said.
"No, I admire your will to protect him and your friends. However, you need to also protect yourself. You are no use if you get yourself killed." He said. "I get you. I do not know the details but you owe your life to him. However, keep in mind that you are valuable to him as well." Then Byra and Prince Dimitri walked towards us. "Thank you both for coming."
"Is there something you need, Professor?" Your Highness said.
"Yes, I need you both to help me with Dedue's training." The professor said. "Dimitri, can you please move 6 feet away from us?"
"Of course…" Your Highness said, walking away from us. He turned to us. "Is this far enough?"
"Yes…" The professor said. He then turned to me. "Dedue, how will you defend him within this distance?"
"I will never stray away from him," I answered. Then Byra dashed swiftly towards Prince Dimitri. She appeared behind him and placed a blade on his neck. ¨BYRA! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!¨ She whispered something in his ear, causing him to blush.
¨Letś play a game. Letś say you are rooting for Dimitri to break free from Byra." The professor said. This was madness. I warned him if he brings any harm to him, I will take action.
¨I will break him free," I said.
¨There will be a time that you two are separate in battle and a sneaky foe will try to kill any of you two. Dedue, you have to learn that Dimitri is strong and can fight just like you. Also, you cannot throw away your life like it is nothing. You two have to work together.¨
¨He is right, Dedue. You always protect me. You have to realize that you are more than just my shield. You are my friend." Your Highness said, disarming Byra and pinning her to the wall with her blade on her throat. ¨You have to trust me. I am not weak."
¨Well done, Dimitri.¨ Byra said. ¨You got me in a very vulnerable position."
¨You? Vulnerable? That is a first.¨ He said, smiling at her.
¨Are you going to help her?" I asked.
¨Nope, I have faith in her abilities. We have been together since birth and fought side by side in many battles. Yes, there are times that things were tough and there are moments when I too throw my life to protect her.¨ He then patted my shoulder. ¨However, you do it every time we are in-field training. You are just insulting Dimitri´s abilities." Then Byra disarmed Prince Dimitri and pinned him down to the ground. She was on top of him. ¨Try to believe in your partner.¨
"I believe I am now in a very vulnerable position." Prince Dimitri said, hiding his blush.
"You? Vulnerable? That is a first." Byra said.
The Professor turned to his sister. ¨Byra, I think that is enough.¨ He said. She stood up and offered her hand to him. Prince Dimitri grabbed it and Byra pulled him up. ¨Dimitri, you are going to be training with Dedue. I want you two to work on gambit attacks and teamwork combinations.¨
¨Of course, Professor." He said. ¨I will be honored to be partnered with him." I started to think about my actions after that. He was right. I can't continue believing that his Highness cannot protect himself.
Hubert cast magic and blasted towards them, Dimitri cut through the magic with his spear. Ferdinand swung his spear at him but Dedue cut the spear into two with his ax. Dimitri dashed behind Ferdinand, putting him in a submissive hold. "LET ME GO!" How is he able to slice through my spear? He has a wooden ax. Dedue tapped him on the head with the ax and his forehead turned red.
"Ferdinand Von Aegir of the Black Eagles House is out," Jeralt said.
That was my move. Byra thought, letting out a small smile.
The Prince is a very fast learner.
He is amazing as expected.
Do I detect a sign of affection or a hint of puppy love?
Oh Sothis, I just admire his skills. I have been sparring with him for a couple of weeks. He is very talented.
Are you sure? He is a very kind and handsome young man.
He is and I do not have a right to think of him that way. He is a prince and I am a mercenary.
Byra, love is given to us once we are born into this world. You have the right to love.
There are limitations and standards of who we are supposed to love. She thought, watching Dimitri. But I am happy that he is doing well. Jeralt noticed his daughter was smiling and was surprised.
Am I seeing this right? Is she smiling? Jeralt thought.
"You are useless. I guess I have to do this by myself." Hubert said. Of what I can gather, the one from Duscur will do anything to protect the prince. This might be my chance to take them both down. He cast fire magic at Dimitri. Dedue did not throw himself to protect him. Instead, Dimitri again cut the magic with his spear.
"Dedue, give me a boost," Dimitri said.
"Alright…" Dedue said. Dimitri jumped on his ax and with all his strength, Dedue swung him to Hubert. Hubert cast fire magic one more time but it was too late. Dimitri pinned him to the ground and poke his head with his spear.
"Well played, Prince Dimitri," Hubert said.
"Hubert Von Vestra of the Black Eagles House is out," Jeralt said.
¨Good work, Dedue." Dimitri said.
¨Thank you, Your Highness." He replied.
"Man, those Blue Lions are not messing around. They already took out 4 members of the Black Eagles House." Claude said, sneaking his way to the Blue Lions based.
"They are indeed strong," Lysithea said, running beside him. "What is the Professor teaching them?"
"Who knows? All I know that something seems off.." Claude said. "I am amazed how much they grew in a short amount of time but the thing I don't get is to put a familiar yet stronger player out." He turned and found Byra up a hilltop, watching the battle. What is their strategy?
"It is finally the mock battle. I hope you are all prepared." Lady Rhea said.
"Unfortunately, the Blue Lions House has to sit out a student," Seteth said. "So Professor Byleth, who will be sitting out this mock battle?"
"Byra Eisner." He said. I was stunned and I was not the only one. Everyone was shocked that he chose his sister.
"I am astonished by your decision, Professor." Lady Rhea said. "Is she one of the strongest students in the Blue Lion House?"
"That is where you are wrong. No one is weak in my class. Every one of my students is strong." He said. "I want to show you all their strength."
Teach, you made us eat our doubts. Claude thought.
Brother, Claude is on his way towards our flag. It seems his tricks paid off. Byra thought, eating a bear jerky.
Is he alone?
Nope, he brought Lysithea with him. They snuck around Felix and Sylvain by using Raphael, Hilda, and Leonie as a distraction. They probably did the same with Annette.
Interesting. Anyway… WHY ARE YOU EATING BEAR JERKY WITHOUT ME?!
Father made it for us. It is pretty good.
Can I have some?
Brother, I will give you the whole bag if you win. If we lose, I am afraid that you will be left with crumbs.
You got yourself a deal, sis.
"Lady Edelgard, what are we going to do?" Bernadetta asked.
"I can't believe we are the only ones left," Linhardt said, letting out a yawn.
"Linhardt, keep it together man," Casper said. "The mock battle is not over."
"Calm down you three, we will figure out something," Manuela said. The new professor was not kidding about his students. He did a fine job with them.
"Professor Manuela. Linhardt. Casper. Guard the flag while Bernadetta and I advance to the Golden Deers' base." Edelgard said. It is the only option we have at this point.
"Me? Why me?" Bernadetta said.
"Aww… I wanted to come." Casper pouted.
"Casper, you stay and Bernadetta you are coming with me," Edelgard said, pulling her away. We need to turn this around.
Felix and Leonie's blades clashed viciously. Sylvain was matched with Raphael while Annette was matched with Hilda. The battle was raging with tension. No one wanted to lose. "Felix, you got a lot better," Leonie said. "You weren't fighting like this when we were sparring together." Unless… "WERE YOU GOING EASY ON ME? HOW DARE YOU HIDE YOUR FULL STRENGTH FROM ME?!"
"I don't know what you are talking about?" Felix replied.
"YOU KNOW VERY WELL WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT?" Leonie screamed.
"I am excited about this new Blue Lions Team," Raphael said. "It gets me pumped up."
"Thanks for the compliment," Sylvain said.
"I got to say, you three are pretty tough," Hilda said, breathing heavily. They are pretty good. Sylvain is even a match for Raphael and he is twice his size. We need to think of something. What will Claude do in a time like this?
"Likewise," Annette said. I think it is time to use it.
"BYRA! ARE YOU THERE?!" I screamed, knocking on her door to her room. "Hello?" The door slowly opened and Byra was rubbing her eyes and letting out a yawn. "Sorry to wake you Byra. But there is a favor I need to ask before we head out to the class."
"What is it?" She said, letting out a yawn.
"I heard you were good at magic. I was wondering if you can teach me." I said.
"Come in…" She said. I walked into her room. "So what do you want to learn?"
"Anything…"
"Hmmm…" She said. "There are different ways of casting magic, do you know that?"
"Of course, there is tomb casting, spirit casting, and incantations casting."
"There is also signing casting. It is a form of casting meant for no-verbal casters like the deaf." She explained. "It is a very difficult way of casting but the most powerful."
"Signing magic or casting, I have never heard of it," I said.
"It is because spell-caster felt it was unnecessary and there was discrimination between disable mages and normal mages." She explained. "Let me show you." She turned to the candle and swiftly made hand signs with only one hand. She pointed her finger to the candle and a little flame lit the candle.
"WOW! You did not even say anything." I said. I was in complete awe. I couldn't even believe my eyes. "So will you teach me? I want to know more."
"It won't be easy." She said. "It takes a lot of concentration and control."
"Please, teach me. I will work very hard. I know I am clumsy, messy, and just useless but I want to be strong. I want to improve my skills in magic even further." I said, bowing in front of her. "I will give you anything in return."
"That won't be necessary. I will just teach you for free." She said.
¨Really?¨ I said, hugging her. ¨Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.¨
I am going to show them what I am made of.
Felix and Sylvain fell back and were exhausted. "Boys, get ready," Annette said, signing with two hands. We are only allowed to use a limited amount of magic. If I use this spell, I can't do another one. It is all or nothing. A magic circle glows at the bottom of the feet. I know I can do this. The magic moved upward and it made one clone for all of them. Annette's bracelet gem turned red. She gripped on her wooden ax.
"WHAT?!" Hilda screamed. You gotta be kidding me. What type of spell is this?
¨Is that even legal?¨ Leonie asked.
¨Yes, it is a spell called Mirage." Jeralt explained. The only person I have seen using this spell is…. He turned to Byra. ¨So I see that your brother is not the only one who has been teaching these brats."
¨I just taught her a little something." She said. She has proven herself in the last few days. That spell is hard to cast. She managed to do it. I am proud of her.
It seems that you will also make a good professor. Why did you request to be a student?
It is too much work for me to handle. Also, my social skills are slowly getting better because of them. Also, it is the first time that I can have friends.
They raced to the Golden Deers. ¨Raphael, it is time to smash them."Helga said. Raphael jumped in the air and smashed his fist to the ground. Clouds of dust filled the area and the ground started shaking and crumbling. ¨That will give us some cover."
Felix leaped through the dust and towards Raphael. Leonie pulled out a bow and fired a bow at him. Felix used his magic to destroy the bow and swung his blade towards Raphael. Raphael punched him but it was only a clone. ¨What? I thought I had him." Raphael said. Suddenly, something swiftly hit his legs, causing him to collapse on the ground. ¨What is going on here?¨
¨Keep your eyes on your opponent." A voice said. He turned and found Sylvain. He tapped his head with the spear. His head turned red.
¨Raphael Kristen of the Golden Deers House is out." Jeralt said.
¨I will avenge you, Raphael," Leonie said, shooting a rain of arrows. Annette can't use magic anymore. If we take her down, the clones will disappear.
¨Look at that, I am always getting arrows.¨ Sylvain said, deflecting all of the arrows with his spear. Annette tried her best to deflect the arrows but one arrow hit her on the chest. ¨Annette" He could not make it time. An arrow hit him on the forehead.
¨Yeah, I got them." Leonie cheered but it was short-lived when Sylvain and Annette poof into nothingness. ¨You gotta be kidding me, was that a clone too."
¨We destroy all the clones. So where are they?" Hilda said. Then Felix and Annette attack behind them. ¨WHAT?!" It was too late to react. Both her and Leonie got tapped by their wooden weapons.
¨Hilda Goneril and Leonie Pinelli of the Golden Deers House are out." Jeralt said.
¨Annette, that was a cool spell." Sylvain praised. ¨I have never seen a spell like that." He then turned to Felix. ¨Felix, was she amazing? Come on, tell her that she is so cool.¨ Felix let out a grunt and turned to her. She stared at him for a brief moment.
Why does she have to stare at me with those eyes? Felix thought, hiding his blush. So cute… ¨Ÿeah, she was amazing.¨
¨Thank you, boys. I kinda have Byra to thank for." Annette said. She turned upward and found Byra on the hill. ¨BYRA! I DID IT! DID YOU SEE ME?!" Byra gave her a thumb up and it made her smile even more. Thank you for teaching me. She turned back to the boys. ¨Well, we all know the plan right. Letś get to work.¨
Claude heard the announcement of his fallen comrades. ¨They took out 5 of us already. This is getting intense." Claude said. Then an arrow raced towards him. He swiftly shot an arrow towards it to deflect it. He then noticed the professor with Mercedes and Ashe. ¨Teach, I am here for that flag. So if you can be so kind to hand it over.¨ He did not utter a word. He just gripped on his sword. ¨Letś get started.¨He shot an arrow at him. The professor caught it with ease. There is no phasing this guy. ¨Lysithea, stay sharp. I witnessed him in battle. He is pretty strong and I do not think he is the type to pull back pushes."
¨You do not need to tell me that." Lysithea said. I heard about him and his sister. I know how strong they are. She stared at him for a brief moment. I am not going to lose to him. ¨Miasma!¨ Darkness spirals towards the professor. He did not move, instead, Ashe came up in front of him and cut through the magic with his sword. That was unexpected. I have never seen him hold a sword. Then Mercedes shot an arrow at her. Lysithea dodged it and countered with another spell. Ashe did the same and cut through the darkness. Mercedes does not like wielding a weapon. What is going on here?
¨So I guess the professor was not the only one that we should be worrying about." Claude said. These two look different. They were known as the weaklings of the Blue Lions House. I thought this was going to be a piece of cake.
¨Ashe. Mercedes. Are you two ready?" Byleth said. They nodded, assuring their professor that they were prepared for battle. Ashe and Byleth raced towards them, gripping on their blades. Claude shot a rain full of arrows but they swiftly dodge every single one. And when he was going to shoot more, an arrow raced towards him.
¨Damn, these guys are fast." Claude said.
¨Swarm Z!" Lysithea said. Darkness appeared once more and spiral speedily to them. Both Ashe and Byleth cut through the spell and in their surprise, arrows flew their way. Ashe managed to dodge everything but one arrow hit his shoulder. His shoulder turned blue.
Oh no, Ashe is hurt. I need to get to him. Mercedes thought. ¨Rescue,¨ She cast a spell and Ashe was teleported in front of her.
¨What can she do that spell?" Lysithea said. ¨Claude, stop her before she heals Ashe."
¨I´m on it." Claude said, aiming his arrow. He shot it and Byleth moved in front of him and caught the arrow. ¨Come on, stop catching all of my arrows.¨ Mercedes healed him just in time.
¨Claude, it is time to use it." Lysithea said.
¨Fine, you have a point." Claude said, pulling out five arrows. ¨Try to catch theses, Teach." He fired all arrows at once.
¨Miasma!¨ Lysithea cast. The arrows were coated with dark magic. Letś see what you will do now. "Swarm Z." More darkness appeared and raged towards them. Mercedes moved in front of them.
¨Safeguard!" She said, creating a shield out of magic. Thank you, Professor, for giving me the power to protect my friends.
¨Professor, I know the basic black magic spells. I just do not like using them." I said.
¨I am not teaching you any black or dark magic spells. That is more of Byra´s department. I am going to teach you ancient white magic." He said.
¨Ancient white magic?¨ Mercedes said.
¨Yes, white magic heals but that is only one part of it. White magic is meant to be defense magic.¨ The Professor said. ¨If you do not want to be the sword of the team, be the shield.¨
Mercedes successfully protected her comrades from the attack. ¨Offense maneuver…" Byleth said. Ashe and Mercedes pulled out their bows and fired a couple of arrows at them. Byleth cast a spell on them, setting the arrows on fire.
What? Thatś our move. Claude thought. He jumped in the air to avoid the attacks while Lysithea tried her luck to use her magic to destroy the arrows. Claude fired a few arrows at Mercedes. Ashe dropped his bow and pulled out his sword and deflected every arrow. They worked on every little detail in their plan. He put these two together for a reason.
¨I will not let you hurt her," Ashe said. Mercedes aimed her bow at him while he was still in midair.
¨Let me return the favor." Mercedes said, shooting an arrow. The arrow hit his bow and it flew across the arena.
¨Shit." Claude said. Mercedes shot another arrow and the arrow hit him on the chest. His chest turned red. He fell to the ground in pain.
¨Claude, I am coming." Lysithea said, casting a spell but she couldn't. She checked her bracelet and it was red. I am out of magic already. Then Byleth appeared in front of her. Was he waiting for me to use up my magic? I am not armed. He tapped her forehead with her forehead turned red.
¨Claude Von Riegan, leader of the Golden Deers is out." Jeralt said. "Also Lysithea Von Ordelia of the Golden Deers is out."
"That was a painful shot," Claude said, trying to sit up. He turned to Byleth, Ashe, and Mercedes. I guess I cannot call them weak anymore. What an interesting development.
"You two did a great job," Byleth said, patting both of their heads. They blushed and felt happy that their professor was proud of them.
They are pretty good. You three successfully protected the flag.
Sis, at this rate I have nothing left to teach them.
"Mercedes. Ashe. You two know the plan." Byleth said, blasting fire magic in the air.
"Right, we will be on our way," Ashe said. They left him alone at the base.
Meanwhile, Ingrid was still hiding. She then saw the fire magic in the sky. That is my cue. She found Marianne and Professor Hanneman, guarding the flag. Now is my chance. She then walked out of the bush. "I am here for that flag," Ingrid said, gripping on her spear.
"I…" Marianne muttered. We are the only ones left. How can we defend the flag at this rate?
"You will never get this flag," Hanneman said.
"You wanna bet?" She said, smiling at them. She ran towards them with great speed. I did a lot of training. I am going to fail here. I am not going to waste all that time.
"Ingrid, you are very good with a spear. And I noticed during warm-up exercises, you are very flexible." The Professor said. "Also, you are very fast. You can top Felix with speed."
"Really? I did not notice." I said.
"Also noticed that you zone out during sparring. Is there something wrong? If you have a problem, I am happy to help."
"Professor, it is personal and I am not ready to share," I said.
"When you are ready. I am here to listen." He replied. I was grateful to him. He did not force me to do anything or demand me to share my demons. He was patient. "Well, I am going to teach you Tai chi."
"Tai chi?" I repeated.
"It is a martial art from the east. It is meant for defense and also meditation." He said. "You have the skills but your mind becomes your wall and it stops you from improvement. Bottling strong and negative feelings inside you will kill you. So some meditation exercises can help with your stress."
"Professor…"
"Ingrid, you are a very talented, strong, smart, and beautiful young lady but do not let anyone tell you to do things that you don't want to like your father." He said. I was shocked. How did he know about my father? Is he psychic? Can he read my mind? "I cannot read minds."
"You know about my father and my arranged marriage?" I said.
"Yes, your father sent me a letter to see if you are okay. He was worried because you did not reply to him for a month." He explained. He then let out a sigh. "I also sent him a letter and told him that you were fine and that I disprove the whole arranged marriage. I find it stupid. However, I now receive threat notes from him. I just throw it in the trash."
"Wait? You wrote to him?"
"Yes, marriage is not supposed to be taken lightly or used in political or financial gain." He said. "My father always told me that marriage is a bond formed by love. Well, that is how he explains his marriage with my mother. I know too little about the subject but all I know is that I will not want anyone controlling my life, especially choosing the person that I will spend the rest of my life with." I started to cry. "Ingrid, are you okay? Did I say something out of line?"
"No, you said the right words that I needed to hear," I replied. "Okay, Professor, teach me, Tai Chi."
Hanneman cast fire magic at her but she dodges every single one while making her way to the base. He then used wind magic. She was trapped in the vortex. Great, she can get out. Ingrid was struggling to break free.
Ingrid, breathe. It is okay. You can do this. I just need to concentrate. Clear your mind. Do not let your negativity take over you. You can do this. She thought. When she was finally calm, she looked around for ideas of how to escape. She found a rock, floating beside her. I only have one shot. With all her might, she used her spear to hit the rock out of the vortex and towards Hanneman. Hanneman got hit on the head, causing him to faint. The vortex disappeared and Ingrid was finally free.
"Sorry, Professor Hanneman." She said. She then used her spear to catapult herself over them and to the flag. She got it. Marianne was still nervous and was struggling to say anything. She tapped the unconscious professor with her spear and then pointed her spear to her.
"Hanneman, the Professor of the Golden Dears is out," Jeralt announced. "Someone send in a medical team to check on him."
"Father, I do not think there is a medical team," Byra said. "I do not see anyone around and it is only Lady Rhea and Strict."
"You mean, Seteth right?" He asked.
"Maybe…"
"Byra, can you please go check on him? Also, check the other students as well."
"Yes, Father." She said, jumping off the hill.
This is too much work for me. Jeralt thought.
"I guess it is just you and me, Marianne," Ingrid said.
"I… I am not going to win. You are far better than me. I am just a burden to everyone." Marianne said. Ingrid let out a sigh and tapped her chest with her spear.
"Marianne Von Edmund of the Golden Deers is out. The Golden Deers is out of the mock battle." Jeralt said.
"I failed everyone," Marianne said, holding back tears. "How can I face them? I didn't even try to win?" Ingrid patted her head.
"Marianne, I was very much like you. Always worrying about what others think and always thinking negatively about myself. I just want you to know that instead of you beating yourself up, be positive." She slowly walked away from her. "Also, if you are free we can do some Tai Chi together. It is very fun and helps with stress and all."
"Thank you, Ingrid," Marianne said. Ingrid was out of sight and Marianne thought about what she said. Maybe I should try. Then Byra appeared out of nowhere.
"Are you hurt?" She asked.
"No, I am fine," Marianne said. She started doing hand signs and started healing Professor Hanneman. Hanneman woke up and swiftly stood up. He was looking everywhere. ¨Professor?¨
¨Where is Ingrid? Did you defeat her?" He asked. He then noticed that Byra was in front of him. ¨Byra? Why are you here?¨
¨I am the medical team." She said.
¨Professor Hanneman, we lost the battle and our flag." Marianne said.
¨I see, how embarrassing." He said. Byra then made her way to the other students.
Byra, you are going to miss the battle. You can heal those students later.
I know how it is going to end.
What do you mean?
Ingrid retrieved the Golden Deers' flag and is making her way to Felix and Annette. They are going to be fighting Edelgard and Bernadette.
¨I see that the Blue Lions anticipated this.¨ Edelgard said.
¨Oh Edelgard, we should have stayed at the base.¨ Bernadette said.
¨Let's have some fun." Felix said. ¨Annette, I hope you are ready. I am counting on you to have my back.¨
¨I am so fired up.¨ Annette said. ¨Letś get this party started.¨
I see, so you believe that they will prevail?
Of course, Eldegard is the only threat at the moment. Bernadette still needs more training with the bow and also lacks confidence. She is going to miss her targets 80% of the time.
I see you and your brother share a common strategic skill. What happens next?
Dedue and Dimitri will be fighting against Linhardt and Casper. However, the Black Eagles will be at a disadvantage because both Professor Manuela and Linhardt are white mages. Their attacks will be weak. So they will depend solely on Casper to protect and fight them off.
Dedue and Dimitri stood in front of the Black Eagles´ base. ¨So the Professor was right after all," Dimitri said. ¨He predicted that Eldegard would leave the base to get the Golden Deers flag."
¨You look displeased, Your Highness?" Dedue said.
¨Forgive me, I was looking forward to fighting her." He replied. I am sad that I do not get to fight her but I am also worried about Byra. I wonder what she is doing right now. He then covered his mouth to hide his blush. I wonder if she is watching me.
¨Let me handle this." Casper said.
¨Just be careful," Linhardt said, letting out a yawn.
Did he really plan that far? Manuela thought. I knew that we would be in a vulnerable position without Eldegard and he made sure to take down every strong asset to the house. She then let out a blush. Oh dear, I think I have fallen in love.
"Don't worry, Professor Manuela," Casper said. "I will protect you."
They look like a strong group. Is it wise to underestimate them and secure our victory too soon?
I am not underestimating them. I am just saying they did not play their cards right in this mock battle.
True, I do not believe they even have a plan to begin with.
They didn't. They just believed that we would rashly attack anyone and that we would fall easily. They are sadly mistaken. In no time, there won't be anyone left to guard the last flag.
"Bernadetta Von Varley and house leader Edelgard Von Hresvelg of the Black Eagles House," Jeralt said.
"I am sorry, Edelgard." Bernadetta said, panting.
"It is fine. We did not predict that the Blue Lions had a plan." Edelgard said. They are finally using their heads for once. The Professor trained them well. I wished he was assigned to our house.
"Good job, Felix," Annette said, showing her palm to him. "Give me five." Felix stared at the hand for a moment. "Don't leave me hanging." He let out a sigh and joined his hand with hers. "We were awesome. We make a pretty good team." He let out a smirk.
"Yeah, we sure did. You were impressive." Felix said.
"Aww… How cute…" Ingrid said. "You are finally being nice for a change." Felix blushed with embarrassment and turned away from them.
"Did you get the flag?" Felix asked.
"Yeah, we just need one more." She said, smiling.
Wow, three still remain. I am impressed. For two idiots that volunteer to throw their lives away for another life, you two are very smart.
I will take that as a compliment. Byra thought. She then noticed Claude, sitting in the grassy field, gripping on his stomach. She walked up to him.
"Byra, what are you doing on the field?" Claude asked. She did not utter a word. Silence, just like her brother. She sat in front of him and started to heal him. "Your brother really knows how to teach a class. The Blue Lions were known as reckless fighters, a lot of muscle but no brains."
"Then my brother is doing his job." She replied, concentrating on healing. Claude stared at her for a brief moment.
I can see why Dimitri has a thing for you. Claude thought. She is a mystery. She then stood up in front of him. "The pain, it's gone. I don't feel a thing."
"The Blue Lions House attained all three flags. The winner of this mock battle is the Blue Lions." Jeralt announced. I can't believe my kids' house won. I am so proud of them.
You were correct.
Of course, I was.
"I see that your house won. Congratulations." Claude said. She then offered her hand to me. "Thank you." He grabbed her hand and she helped him up. However, he bumped into her causing her to lose balance. She was about to fall back until he grabbed her and pulled her closer to her. "Are you okay?" He cupped her face. "I am very sorry about that."
"It is fine." She said. He is too close. She then noticed Dimitri standing a few inches away from them. "Dimitri." She moved away and walked towards Dimitri. "You were amazing out there. Congratulations on your win."
Why is she with Claude? Why is she so close? What is this feeling? Why do I have a wave of sudden anger against Claude? Dimitri thought. He then let out a smile. "Thank you, but it's our win, not just mine." She placed her hand on his cheek. He started to blush in front of her. "Byra, what are you doing?"
"You have a cut on your cheek." She said, healing his wound. Claude noticed him blushing.
He is in too deep. He has to pick the hardest fish in the sea. Claude thought. Dimitri glared at him. Gosh, I get it. Princey, you are overprotective. Dimitri grabbed her hand.
"Thank you but let's go," Dimitri said. "Everyone will be meeting at the base." She nodded and he pulled her away. She noticed that he was still holding her hand.
Sis, we won!
I heard, great job brother.
So do I finally get some bear jerky?
Yes, you can have the whole bag.
