She came to him the first time, asking for his help. She looked confident that he'd accept, and was enraged when he didn't. She left, and he thought nothing of it.
She came to him the second time, without even trying to do so. She pleaded for his help with her eyes, and still got no answer. She left, and he thought nothing of it.
He came to her the third time, feeling her fading into the air. He could no longer help her, so he did the only thing he could do:
"I knew it was you"
That was enough for her, and she smiled as she vanished for good. She left, and he thought nothing of it.
Or so he tells himself when her face appears in front of him.
