Chapter 3 Old Story
"So Ray, I want to ask, how many episodes are we going to watch until it's over?" Armin asks.
Ray says, "Ah, there are going to be 22 episodes. And so far you just finished 2 of them."
"22? That sounds very long..." Connie says.
"If each of the episodes reveals a lot of things, I wonder how many things are we going to take in..." Mike says.
"Don't worry, Moblit and I've been keeping track with each of the episodes." Hange says while showing the notebook. "And I'll make sure none of my squad dies this time."
"And we have to make sure Historia becomes the Queen of Paradis as well." Erwin says.
Historia is a little nervous, but maybe seeing this will help her ease a little.
Before Eren and Historia were captured, the whole Levi Squad was sitting at the table while Historia talked about her story.
"I was born on a small farm in the northern region of Wall Rose. It was on land owned by the noble family of Reiss."
Just then, the scene changed to a younger Historia working at the farm.
"Wait, so we're going to see Historia's past?" Eren asks.
"This TV can do that?" Jean says.
Historia is slightly nervous, but she knows that everyone needs to know about her past and her relationship with her father, Rod Reiss.
"As far back as I can remember, I was helping around the farm." Young Historia was holding a stack of hay on her own, and then holding a bucket of water.
"So cute." Ymir says to Historia, who blushes a little.
"I have to agree." Sasha adds.
She turned to see her mother at the tree reading a book.
"But, my mother was always reading books, and not once did I see her doing housework. She was a beautiful woman..."
Night time approached, and Historia's mother walked outside of the house with a red coat on. "At night, someone would come for her in a wagon and she'd go off to the city wearing fancy clothes."
So she was an escort... Levi thinks.
Young Historia was peeking out the window watching her mother leave. "For me, that was just life as I knew it. After I learned to read and write, I picked up a book to imitate my mother. Only then did I know how alone I was. In all the books, parents cared about their children. They talked, hugged, and fought, or so the stories went. I had never experienced any of those things."
"No way...That's so cruel..." Sasha says.
"Yeah...someone like her doesn't deserve to be a mother..." Jean says.
Eren frowns, knowing the talk of her mother causes him to remember his mother being eaten, but he also remembers that he killed the Titan that ate his mother.
"You're not alone, you have all of us here." Connie says.
"Although I don't think I have anything to say, he's right, you still have all of us." Reiner says.
Everyone glares at him while Annie asks, "What the hell, Reiner?"
"One day, out of curiosity, I decided to try hugging my mother. I just wanted to see what kind of face she would make." A nervous Historia was walking closer to her mother and jumped onto her lap, "Mother!"
Just then, her mother grabbed her and threw her to the ground, causing her to have a bloody nose. "She ended up shoving me away, but that was the first thing my mother ever did to me. That's why it made me so happy."
"If only I had the courage to kill the girl..." Her mother said with tears in her eyes before leaving, much to Historia's shock.
"Those were... the first words my mother said to me."
"Okay, that is going too far." Ymir says.
"Yeah. What kind of mother will try to kill her child?" Armin protests.
Historia frowns but is touched at how her friends are reacting to it.
"After that, she left the house and began living somewhere else." Historia's mother left with two bags with her.
The scene changed to midnight. "And then, five years ago... One night just days after Wall Maria fell... For the very first time, I met my father."
Rod Reiss walked into the house while taking off his hat. "Nice to meet you, Historia. My name is Rod Reiss... I'm your father."
Historia gasped. "That man... He was the lord ruling the land we lived on." Historia turned to see her mother standing in the doorway. "My mother I hadn't seen in years looked terribly frightened."
Why then? Erwin has been thinking. Soon after the fall of Wall Maria... is there some sort of secret plan behind it?
"Historia... You'll be living with me now." Rod said.
Rod held Historia's hand while walking out of the house, just then, Kenny stood in front of them, causing Historia's mother to scream in horror before she was detained by two cloaked figures.
"This is a problem, Lord Reiss. Let's avoid acting rashly now. Did the fall of Wall Maria make you a little scared?"
"Wait, Kenny was in this as well?" Levi asks.
Historia shakes a little and says, "Yeah. I didn't mention it in the previous episode, but... he's the one who killed my mother."
"Mother!" Historia yelled.
"No! I am not the mother of that girl! She has nothing to do with me!" Historia's mother yelled with tears in her eyes.
Now everyone in the room are angry for the woman, if she wasn't dead, they would've done this on their own.
Historia flinched, and Kenny said, "Oh? Is that true, Lord Reiss? Do you really have nothing to do with this woman or child?"
Rod frowned, and then he let go of Historia's hand. "So be it...These two here have nothing to do with me."
"Wait, he shows up out of the blue, tells you he's your dad, and then he just says that he doesn't know you?" Gunther asks.
"He was trying to protect us..." Historia says with a shaky voice.
I doubt that... Ymir thinks.
"I thought that might be the case." Kenny then forced Historia's mother to kneel.
"What?! What are you...?"
"You never existed. You never worked at the estate either. Nobody knows who you are." Kenny took out the knife.
"That's not... Master! Please tell them that's not true!" Rod turned away and Historia tried to approach her. "Mother..."
"If only...If only I never had you!" Then Kenny silted her throat in front of Historia.
"Oh my goodness..." Everyone feels sick after seeing the scene. Historia can't believe she had to see this for the second time.
"So your father just abandoned both you and your mother...I'm sorry..." Nifa says.
"But I think she deserved it...if only she wasn't rude to Historia..." Eren says.
"Those were my mother's last words." Kenny walked toward Historia and pointed the knife at her.
"Wait." Rod said.
"Moments before I was to be killed, my father proposed an idea. If I were to be sent far away and live out a quiet life, perhaps they could spare me."
"Your name will be Christa Lenz." Rod said to his daughter.
"That's why..." Ymir says.
"So that name was actually given to you by your father..." Armin says.
"But I still think your family is messed up, but who am I to judge you? I guess we're the same..." Eren says.
"Yeah..." Mikasa then feels pity for the girl.
At the current time, Rod was hugging Historia. He said, "Please forgive me for everything. In order to protect you, I had no other choice."
"I still think there is some hidden motive under that..." Mike says.
"But what could it be?" Nanaba asks.
"F-father..." The screen showed Eren still being tied up with his mouth being tied.
"I was always thinking about you. I've always dreamed of the day I could hold you like this. You're special... Royal blood runs through you."
Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie tense up as they know what it means, but the others are just confused.
Historia had tears on her face, and she asked, "It... does?"
"That's right, Historia. Our Reiss family is the true royal line." Rod said. "And because you're special, you're the one and only person who can save all of humanity. Now, let us go, Historia. To the place, it all began..."
Rod grabbed Historia's hand as he stood up.
"That sure was a lot to take in, he said that Historia is the only person who can save all of humanity, but what does it have to do with Eren?" Armin asks.
"Yeah, but I looked really bad when being tied up like that..." Eren says.
"He'd better not do anything to Eren, I don't care if he's royal blood or not..." Mikasa says in a dark tone.
Reiner says, "If that's the case... I guess it really explains everything..."
"Do you three know something?" Jean asks.
"I am not sure if we can say this." Annie says. "But I have to guess it is related to the Founding Titan..."
"Founding Titan... the Titan inside Eren?" Hange asks.
"The Founding Titans are usually with the Royal Blood, but we're not sure what they can do, only that Marley wants us to bring it to them." Annie says.
Ray says, "Sorry, but I'm going to stop the spoilers, they'll show in the upcoming episodes."
Back with the Levi Squad, Hange and Moblit brought Sannes into the same prison cell as Ralph.
"Sannes! Are you alright?" Ralph stood up and asked, only to see his face being punched and the bandages all over it.
"What did you guys do to make him like that?" Jean gasps.
"Wow...now I'm more scared to be on their bad side..." Sasha says.
"Me too..." Connie says.
"Hey, don't tell me...You didn't tell them anything, right?" Ralph asked. "Our loyalty to the King is more-"
Sannes was angry as he charged at his comrade, strangling him. "I can't stand to hear your voice anymore! You've betrayed me since the very beginning!"
Ralph was struggling as he saw tears coming from his eyes. "To think how I trusted you!"
"Sannes! He never told us anything." Hange said. "In fact, we never questioned him."
She showed the paper with the writing on it. "We threatened Ralph with a knife and forced him to read this script that I wrote. That's all."
Sannes let go of Ralph and kneeled on the floor. "Then... I... I betrayed the King?"
Hange and Moblit were preparing to leave. "Y-You devils!"
How ironic... And we're thinking the same thing about them... Bertolt thinks.
Hange turned back at Sannes while adjusting her glasses, "I'm not trying to deny it, but... I'm sure Nick thought the same thing about you. That's why I said what I did. That I was beginning to feel sorry for you. Look at how pathetic you are! Grown-ass men wailing and crying! It serves you right, morons! See how you like spending the rest of your life shitting in a tiny cell!"
"For some reason, I feel like Hange enjoyed the whole torturing thing..." Kenji says with chills on his spine.
"I agree...that expression really is Hange..." Abel adds.
"Hey! I'm not that bad, right, Levi? Erwin?" Hange asks.
"You are." Levi says.
"I have to agree with Levi." Erwin adds.
"See you." Hange turned around.
"Next in line..." Hange stopped as Sannes continued to speak. "The role of ours... There's an order to it. When one's role is done, another steps in to start the action again. And thus, the world can never be rid of it."
He raised his head with tears on his face, "Good luck, Hange."
Everyone stares at the screen, and they start to think of a lot of possibilities. Maybe one day they'll become just like Sannes and the others, but if that's the case, then what will they do?
Hange glared at him before leaving, Moblit seemed concerned. "Section Commander?"
Hange walked out of the door and closed it, leaning on it. Taking a deep breath, she kicked the table, spotted by Levi.
"Sorry... I made a mess." Hange managed to get back on her feet. "There was a cockroach."
"Is there? Because I don't see it..." Connie asks.
"That was just an excuse." Historia points out.
"I see... Just one kick of yours should've blasted it to bits." Levi said and left. "It's about time you fill them in."
"Oh... Yeah, I should." Hange followed him.
"Eren will be eaten?" Armin asked after everyone gathered.
"Yeah. Eren remembered a conversation that went like this..." Hange said.
Back when Eren and Ymir were captured by Bertolt and Reiner, Ymir asked Bertolt. "Do you resent me for it?"
"I'm not sure. I... don't know." Bertolt replied. "You probably didn't want to eat a human either..."
Hange said, "Speculating based on that, Ymir was a Titan wandering alone outside the wall. Bertolt, Reiner, and Annie had a comrade that she ate. When a Titan eats someone, they don't change back into a human. But, what if a Titan ate one of Reiner's comrades? They're humans who can transform into Titans. In other words, if a Titan eats someone with that power, they revert back into a human. Furthermore, they obtain the power of those they eat."
Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie frown as they remember Marcel, and Ymir says, "I'm sorry..."
"It already happened." Reiner says. "We couldn't change it."
"So we will also know the Titan Shifter thing in this part of the future." Armin says.
"In the other day's battle, Reiner was throwing Titans at Eren, who had escaped." The scene showed Reiner being attacked by some titans while he threw one away.
"Wait, I try to do that?" Reiner asks with surprise.
"Wow..." Eren glares at Reiner a little. "Trying to let some Titan eat me so you could take my powers, huh?"
"Eren has the power to control Titans with his scream. He was trying to snatch that power with those Titans." Hange said. "In that case, Eren is just a vessel that is bound to be replaced. Basically, if the government has a Titan of their own, they'll be the one to eat Eren."
"That sounds messed up..." Armin says.
"Yeah, and how did the government find a Titan to do that?" Jean asks.
Mikasa tried to leave, but Levi stopped her. "Calm down. Even if you go on a rampage, they're not going to give Eren back to us. Anyways, we head for the lands of this Rod Reiss. Get ready to leave at once."
"Yes, sir!" Everyone said as they left the room. Hange said, "I'll go tell Erwin what we learned about the Reiss family. I'm sure he's waiting to hear from us."
"Right." Levi said. "We can meet up on Reiss' land. Hear from me at the usual spot." Hange said.
Back with Erwin, he looked at the bag before a member of the Survey Corps walked in. "Excuse me. Commander Erwin. Pyxis is here for you."
"Captain Pyxis...it sure has been a while since we saw him." Eren says.
"Yeah... if only we can have him on our side..." Armin adds.
"Did anyone just notice right now, I think the Commander has lost an arm..." Mike says.
"Wait, seriously?" Hange asks as the others also look closely at the screen. "You're right! How did it happen?"
Ray says, "Ah, my mistake, I forgot to mention, when Reiner and Bertolt tried to abduct Eren, Commander Erwin led the scouts to save him and his arm was eaten by the pure Titan."
Everyone was horrified, and Eren grits his teeth, "It's my fault..."
"No, if anything, the fault was ours..." Reiner frowns.
"The commander?" Erwin asked.
"Yes, he wants to see you." The member said.
Erwin lowered his head before saying, "Let him in."
Once Pyxis entered the room, he said, "Sorry about the late visit. I just couldn't stand still, you see. I finished reading your letter. I came with some thoughts of my own."
Erwin closed the curtain while Pyxis sit on the chair. "But, first I need to ask... Are you serious?"
"Yes." Erwin said. "In order to retake Wall Maria, we'll overthrow the government."
"Overthrow the Government?!" Everyone exclaims in shock, they can't believe they are going to do something like this.
"Will we be able to do it? I mean, if we fail, we're going to get killed for treason..." Connie says.
"Yeah...and we will never get back Wall Maria and go to Dad's basement..." Eren adds.
The rest of the Scouts are also shocked at this revelation, but they also realized that they were already dead and they could only hope that those who lived manage to see the day.
On the wagon, Historia and Rod were on it, and Eren was by their feet, still tied up, but having a blindfold on it.
"Seriously?" Eren mutters, not knowing how many bindings have changed to restrain him.
Mikasa was about to punch the screen if Armin and Jean didn't try to stop her.
"I'm sorry, Eren..." Historia frowns.
"Don't worry, it doesn't happen until the future." Eren assures her.
"I knew this would happen one day." Pyxis said while holding his head, "This cramped world can only hold people for so long before they begin to lash out. And when that time came, I'd have to point my gun at the King as well."
"If my guess proves correct, this plan will not require military forces to take action." Erwin said. "Nor should it be necessary for anyone to die."
"Oh? Do tell me then. Is such a method possible?"
We're also curious about that as well. The viewers except for Erwin are thinking the same thing.
I think I have an idea of what I'm planning, but will it really happen? Erwin thinks.
"However, the groundwork for this to happen is not quite ready." Erwin said. "And if everything is not in order, me and everyone else will be hanged, no doubt."
"Oh, that's all? In other words, it's another huge gamble." Pyxis said.
"Of course, it's always a gamble." Levi grunts.
"It seems I may be a betting man." Erwin closed his eyes. "The news should come shortly. Until it arrives, I'd like you to hear a story regarding my childhood."
"Wait, not just Historia, but we got to hear Commander Erwin's childhood as well?" Armin gasps.
"We did see his father being killed by the Interior Police... but I wonder how did it happen?" Ymir says.
Erwin feels quite unpleasant after seeing Historia's past, but he knows that it is important for the plan to work.
"My father... He was a teacher."
Just then, the scene cut off, and Jean asks, "Is that all?"
"But what about the story? Will it be revealed like Historia's?" Sasha asks.
"Don't worry, it will be revealed." Ray says. "At least give Commander Erwin some time to prepare."
Erwin sighs and says, "Thank you, Ray."
At the place where Dimo Reeves was killed, everyone gathered around the body as Hange and Moblit passed by.
"What's going on?" Hange asked.
"Section Commander, that was-" Moblit said.
"Yeah, I know." Hange said.
Back with Pyxis and Erwin, they heard a knock as Hange and Moblit walked in. "Excuse me!" Hange said.
Hange whispered something to Erwin, with Pyxis staring at them. "I thought as much." Erwin turned to Pyxis. "My gamble was right, after all, Commander. One of the First Interior Squad confessed. The current royal family is a fraud. Reiss is the true royal family."
"My word!" Pyxis was shocked.
Yeah, we were shocked as well. The viewers are thinking the same thing.
"Right now, Squad Levi is underway rescuing Eren and Historia. Once they're recovered, we'll have Historia Reiss enthroned as Queen. As one possessing the true royal blood."
Everyone in the room gasps in shock. Pyxis asked, "And you'll force the makeshift King to relinquish the crown? To the true Queen..."
"Without spilling any blood, we will overthrow the government. And in front of the people, we'll reveal that the system as they know it has all been a lie." Pyxis stood up and thought.
"Will it really work?" Jean asks. "I mean, the people might now believe that Historia is the true queen at first, and there will be some riots happening."
"You're right." Erwin says. "But however, we are not sure how much this is planned in the future, if we all start thinking about it right now, maybe we have a strategy already."
Everyone tenses up as they start to smile, knowing that they're going to succeed this time.
"Very well. I'll back your plan." Pyxis said. "However, whether or not it should be carried out is not for us to decide. You understand that, don't you, Erwin?"
"Of course, Commander." Erwin said.
"I can't believe we are really doing this... We'll be having Queen Historia!" Connie says.
"Yeah, and even Commander Pyxis agrees with the plan too." Armin adds.
Historia is sweating bullets as the plan seems very important to her.
In the wagon, Pyxis was leaving. Hange asked Erwin, "Did anything come of the Reiss investigation?"
"I found out as much as I could. From all that I learned, one curious incident stuck out." Erwin said.
"Incident?" Hange asked.
Just then, a scout member rushed in. "Commander Erwin! The Interior Squad demands you turn yourself in! They're making a scene in the middle of the city where you organized a murder!"
"They can't just do that!"
"That's fucked up!"
The 104th are protesting, but the rest sigh as they figure out this much.
Erwin said, "It seems the enemy's been making plans of their own. Hange, get far from here."
"Huh? What are you planning to do?" Hange asked while Erwin walked to put on his coat.
"I need to be the face of the Scout Regiment." Erwin said. "You should act at your own discretion. Furthermore, the next commander of the Scout Regiment...Hange Zoe, it's you. The Scouts are in your hands."
"Hold on, Erwin? You're going to let me be in charge of the Scout Regiment in the future?" Hange asks in shock.
"But why not Captain Levi?" Eld asks. "He's higher rank than Section Commander Hange."
"You're our leading scientist, you are dedicated to learning the truths about our world. You have natural leadership and you always know what to do when the time is right. You intellect makes you a formidable opponent, and you have a gift of knowing talent when you see it." Erwin says.
Hange can only gape in shock, and the others also understand Erwin's reasons.
The dawn arose, and Erwin walked towards the crime scene. "It's Erwin!"
Erwin stared at the three bodies on the ground, a Military Police member asked, "I take it you know who this is, Erwin?"
When Dimo Reeves' face was shown, Erwin said, "The boss of Reeves Company. Mr. Dimo Reeves."
"Yesterday, and in this very place, Eren Yeager was abducted by underlings of Reeves. However... that was all a mere scheme between the Scouts and Reeves Company in order to evade handing over Eren Yeager to the government. And then... when Reeves was no longer needed, they killed the man to keep him from talking. The murderer is still at large and must be holed up with Eren."
"That's just wrong. We all saw in the last episode that Kenny was the one who killed him." Armin says.
"They are just making up a story to get rid of us." Levi says.
"But they didn't get Flegel, Dimo's son, right? Maybe he can help us." Connie asks.
"I'm sure he saw who the real murderer is and would help us." Eren says.
"What a convenient story that is." Erwin said.
"What you scoundrels are doing...It's the same as monopolizing Eren's power for yourself. And that act violates clause six of the Humanity Charter. You know which that one is, don't you?"
"To prioritize one's own gain over the safety and longevity of humanity, yes?" Erwin asked.
"That's right. Therefore, in acknowledge of violating said law, all Scouts are to be apprehended!" The Military Police said.
Flegal was hiding in an alley and he muttered, "Old man..."
He tried to run away after seeing some Military Police running.
I knew it...he was still there. Erwin thinks.
"Don't just run away! Do something!" Eren yells.
"Not all of them are as suicidal as you." Annie says to Eren. "He's not a soldier and he's just a civilian. It is easier for him to run than fight."
Eren grits his teeth, but Annie is right. He knows how people will turn a blind eye than risk their lives fighting.
Most of the Scouts in the headquarters were arrested, Kenny and Caven were watching from afar, and he asked, "You think the fat cats will finally be satisfied? I bet Reeves would be glad to know he proved useful in the end."
"There's still Levi to deal with..." Caven said.
"I told you, he'll show up on his own." Kenny said. "We'll crush him when the time comes."
"Not if I kill you first..." Levi mutters, and everyone tenses up.
Hange and Moblit were hiding behind the wall when Moblit asked, "What do we do now?!"
When Erwin was about to be sent to the wagon, he asked, "May I have a moment?"
He walked toward Reeves' relatives, and one of them said, "Get away from my husband, you lowlife!"
"In the battle of Trost District, Mr. Reeves delayed the evacuation by trying to take along his wealth." Erwin said.
Mikasa's eyes twitch and she thinks, I'm still not over that.
"So what?! Are you saying he deserved to die?" The woman cried in tears.
"However... given the current situation with Trost on the verge of collapse...he planted his feet in the city, and using any means possible...he aided those with no place to go while striving to revive the city. Except, by somebody's hands that dream was extinguished. I promise you... I will avenge him."
Then everyone watched Erwin leave with the Military Police.
"To think that they would also arrest all the Scouts..." Historia says.
"I guess we're the only ones who are not arrested yet, that's good to know." Connie says.
"And now we're going into Commander Erwin's past." Ray says, and Erwin nods.
"My father... He was a teacher. One day, we were learning history. To protect themselves from the Titans, humanity took refuge within the walls and realized 100 years of peace."
The scene showed Commander Erwin's father holding a book and chalk. "In doing so, any records of our earlier past were lost for all of time. That's what we're all taught."
Young Erwin raised his hand. "However, I... having doubts of my own, asked my father a question. My father evaded answering the question and ended the class as normal. But..."
The scene changed to nighttime when Erwin and his father were alone. "After we got home, my father answered my question. He said the history books given by the government were full of contradictions and mysteries. My father continued to tell me more, and even as a child, I was astounded. There is a reason he didn't tell that story to the entire class, but I wasn't smart enough to know."
Young Erwin was chatting with other boys from school. "I'd been telling the other kids my father's story, and one day, the Military Police came to question me."
Erwin was now in front of his father's grave. "My father didn't come home that day... He died in some accident in a faraway town. Based on what I knew, my father was killed by the government."
Everyone feels sad for Commander Erwin, they can't believe what they've heard. Armin asks, "So what was the question that you asked your father?"
"Since there isn't any Military Police here, I don't think it will be a problem to talk about it." Mikasa says.
Erwin says, "The question that I asked is this. How do we know there are not more humans outside the walls?"
"That's the question?" Reiner is the one who says, and they also don't understand why that was forbidden to talk about.
"There is Marley, where Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie are from, and who knows what other nations are out there." Ymir says.
"One hundred and seven years ago... Humanity that fled into these walls... The King had altered their memories to make them easy to rule. That was my father's theory."
"Oh? Because if they hadn't done that, civilization within the walls could never succeed?" Pyxis asked.
"Yes. Ever since I was a child, I've been thinking...Why did my father have to die for nothing more than to get close to the truth? Even those in the government would believe what they're doing is just. However, I realized one thing about them...What they're trying to protect is not humanity, but their gardens, houses, and lands. Rather, if anyone dares threaten their authority, they'll be extinguished, whoever they are. In the end, there was nothing to justify my father's death. My father was killed by human greed... And by the foolishness of his own son. Before I knew it, my father's theory became the truth inside my heart. Now, my mission in life... It's to prove my father's theory once and for all."
"Those guys are really fucked up." Historia mutters in anger.
"Yeah, I never thought Commander Erwin's history is... I don't know how to say it..." Eren says. "But I know for sure that those people are disgusting."
"I agree. Their heads are so high up their asses and they can't even pretend to feel bad..." Levi says.
"I know it's a lot to take in." Erwin says. "Which is why I usually never tell anyone of my scouts about my past."
"The Scout Regiment murdered a civilian! Some of them have fled capture! They're still on the loose! If you spot any of these persons, report it immediately!"
"Told you, didn't I? They're the ones who had that Titan battle here and destroyed practically everything!"
Besides the talking man, Jean walked by with cloaks on, and both Armin and Mikasa were waiting for him before they left together. In the woods, they found Levi, Connie, and Sasha.
"Captain, we bought the supplies." Jean said.
"The Military Police were handing out these." Armin showed the newspaper to Levi. "If this is true, the Scouts will be disbanded."
"Is that supposed to be Captain Levi?" Oluo asks.
