I'm going to slow down with posting chapters so I can edit them better. I'm getting a bit busier with school but I'm taking writing as a self-care activity I can do to step away from studying. My plan is to post at least one chapter a week if I can manage to write that much or my writer's block allows me. Honestly, I don't have the full story outlined that I'm following but paying it by ear of what sounds the best from the ideas that I have.
Kurt could remember the first time he experienced an episode. He called them episodes but inside he would say they were his call to death. He knew he couldn't even say it as a joke, or he would upset his family. To him, it was one way to cope with what was happening, to joke about it.
He grew bitter overtime with the constant medical attention. For about a year, Kurt used to be in and out of the hospital until his parents ended up converting his bedroom to an equivalent of a hospital room with all the equipment. He was grateful that he didn't have to be stuck in that hellhole anymore. He hated the hospital with all the noise, being poked and prodded by nurses all day. The constant tests and examinations that he underwent were never-ending and they still didn't know what was wrong. No one knew what was wrong.
Eventually with his new bedroom, his parents hired an in-house doctor to oversee his medical needs. He hated that he couldn't escape them. The first doctor was his least favorite. Doctor Granger. Kurt hated him. He hated his greasy blonde hair, how he wore too much cologne and how his white coat almost seemed to have a new unknown stain on it when Kurt needed his blood drawn for his daily labs. He was an idiot in Kurt's opinion. How he managed to make it through medical school was beyond him and the fact that he passed his board exams was another thing.
Dr. Granger had a god complex and was determined he was able to "cure" Kurt as he put it. If anything, Dr. Granger made Kurt's condition worse. Kurt was experiencing terrible side effects from all the medications he was put on. The daily blood draws for labs hurt like hell. Overall, Dr. Granger was awful and rude. He wondered how he charmed his way past his parents. Good thing Dr. Granger only lasted a few months before being replaced with Dr. Smith.
Now Dr. Smith was Kurt's favorite, and it wasn't because he was extremely attractive. Dr. Smith was the sweetest, most patient and considerate doctor that Kurt had ever met. Dr. Smith was what Kurt would describe the perfect doctor to be. Within a month of being hired, Kurt was already feeling better. He barely had any symptoms apart from the occasional fever and dizziness. Dr. Smith had gorgeous black-brown hair and dazzling emerald, green eyes as Kurt would put it.
Kurt never put two and two together, but Dr. Smith was basically an older version of Blaine. All that was missing was Blaine's cute bowtie to complete the look. Kurt was infatuated with him and insisted any little scrape or scratch needed as much attention as his episodes. He was so in love that he would think of ways to get Dr. Smith's attention and even thought about planning a way to have CPR completed on him so he could know what it was like to "kiss" him. Luckily, Kurt never had the courage to go through with such a desperate plan. He knew how wrong, but he didn't have any other options.
Under Dr. Smith's care, it didn't even seem like Kurt was sick anymore. There were occasional episodes, but none of them were as severe as they used to be. Kurt was doing so well under Dr. Smith's treatment plan was changed to an on-call doctor with monthly checkups. This routine lasted until Kurt was devastated when Dr. Smith announced he was resigning and to accept another job across the country when Kurt turned 19.
When Dr. Smith left, Kurt had another episode that was just like the very first one. Except this time, Kurt was walking down the stairs when he blacked out. He woke up almost a month later after being put in a medically induced coma for his body to heal. He had fallen down the stairs and had broken two ribs, his left arm and suffered traumatic head injury when his head made impact with the third step of the stairwell. Finn was the one to find him and he's never really looked at Kurt the same way. He went into panic, screaming around for his parents. Carole was the only one home at the time and called 911 while attempting to calm Finn down. She worked as a part-time nurse so did the best, she could make sure Kurt was okay until the ambulance arrived.
That's when things took a turn for the worst with Sebastian Smythe.
I've gone back and forth with where to end this chapter, but I feel like I don't want to open the hell gates just yet about the Sebastian drama. There is a lot to unpack with that. I will probably add more about the other doctors with more flashbacks to really show more about how Kurt was doing while Blaine was gone. I will also do more Blaine flashbacks with how he was during school and how he was able to skip to graduate early.
