Warnings: short chapters, only from Hinata's POV. The slowest slow burn to have ever exist. No time skips. Lots of slice of life. And, of course, plenty of Hinata introspection. If you're looking for something very slow-paced, you've found your story.

...

It was nearing the end of June when Hyuuga Hinata, then aged seven, heard what happened for the first time.

It was relatively late into the night. Hinata was kneeling in her father's office with her head low, just as Hiashi stood with his hands behind his back, his eyes implacable but his expression emotionless.

The branch member came with the news, knocking on the door, and when her father slid open the shoji doors, Hinata managed enough courage to look up at the kneeling man.

"What is it?" Hiashi asked, knowing it had to be something important for a servant to come when he specifically asked no one to disturb him. The man lowered his head and spoke in a firm voice.

"We have received news from the members guarding the village. The Uchiha clan has been massacred."

Hinata's eyes widened and a hand instinctively flew to her mouth to suppress a gasp. Her father visibly stiffened, but when he spoke his voice was no different from before.

"How do you know this?"

"The members of the branch house who were on patrol noticed the lack of light in the district. When they entered to investigate, the only thing they found were corpses littering the streets as far as the eye could see."

"I see" Hiashi said after a while, his head lowered as he took his time to think it over. "Are there no survivors? What about the responsible of this? Do they know who did it?"

"Answering to my lord, there is only one survivor. Uchiha Sasuke, the youngest son of the Uchiha clan leader was found unconscious next to the bodies of his parents. He is already at the hospital. As for the culprit…" the man took a breath before continuing, and the name once out of his lips ringed ominously in the room, even years after; "it is said it was Uchiha Itachi, the heir."
