Chapter 26

With the last of my lingering illness finally passed, I made my way up the stone walkway leading to the modest two-bedroom house Miranda was afforded. I walked through a small garden flanking the path in front of the door, the work of Oriana since Miranda certainly wasn't a botanist.

Tap tap tap tap tap. I rapped on the door, stepping back and waiting, admiring the flowers. I heard someone walking towards the door a few seconds later, which swung open.

Miranda stood in the doorway, wearing a wrinkled white T-shirt and a pair of cutoff shorts. Her hair hung haphazardly from her head instead of her normal primp and proper look. It made me do a double-take. I had never seen Miranda look less than perfect.

"Hey, is this a bad time?" I asked.

Miranda leaned against the doorway, her eyes looking everywhere but into mine, "...Noooooo…." She was trying to act nonchalant but was failing miserably.

I cocked my head a bit, trying to piece together why my friend was acting so cagey. "Okay…. Um…, I wanted to give this to you," I reached into my pocket, retrieving the envelope.

Miranda straightened up, getting a bit more serious, "Oh? What is it?"

"It's a letter to Garrus. I want you to give it to him if anything happens to me."

Miranda nodded, "Absolutely."

Trying to dispel the somber mood I had created, waggled my eyebrows and said, "So… What are you up to?"

Miranda started to reply but was cut off by a flanged voice calling from the background, "Miranda, is everything okay?" She immediately turned beet red while my face sported an evil smile as I connected to dots.

"Ah! I understand now," I teased, "I told you they're better in bed." I giggled lightly, "Okay, I'm gonna go; let you get back to it."

Miranda nodded, her face still mortified, as she backed up and closed the door. "Have fun!" I called over my shoulder.
