"'Um, probably[,' s]he murmured and took another bite of beacon." –emsallthat, "All the Right Moves"
"Yes, definitely," she added after a moment's reflective mastication. "I can't see anything that's likely to show up at the Emergency Signal Device Bake-Off beating these. You've done an excellent job here, Ginny."
Ginny flushed with pleasure. "Thanks, Luna," she said. "It's an old family recipe; Mum used to make these gingerbread distress beacons for the other members of the Order, when things got bleak and they needed cheering up."
"Well, I'm sure these would do that," said Luna. "I don't think I've had anything this scrumptious since Professor Burbage passed out those homemade lemon-crumble foghorns in class last year."
"I loved the obstacle course in PoA and I loved Hermione's Bogart so I just had to use it in this." –dork-with-glasses, author's note to "Weasleys and Malfoys Just Don't Mix"
"Sorry you came such a cropper at the end of your Defence final, Hermione," Harry ventured.
Hermione shrugged in a would-be careless fashion. "That's all right, Harry," she said, in an atypically deep, gravelly voice. "I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of one little witch don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world."
Ron rolled his eyes. "Oh, please, Hermione, not your Bogart," he said. "When you start imitating that hard-boiled Muggle actor, then I know you're just trying to cover up your real feelings."
Hermione laughed. "Fair enough," she said. "Sorry, Ron. So how did you and Harry do? I stayed late in Arithmancy, so I didn't get to see."
"Well, I started out strong," said Ron, "but the hinkypunk got me on the home stretch. Harry got full marks, though."
Hermione started, and turned a wide-eyed face to her other friend. "Did you?"
Harry nodded.
"Well, what do you know," said Hermione, and managed a weak smile. "The stuff dreams are made of. –Ouch! Ron, that was my shin!"
"I know."
"Time for some breakfast. Blubbery muffins and peppermint hot chocolate for me!" –JuLashxx, "An Interesting Parent"
Snape turned a rich shade of his House colour as Dumbledore dribbled molten whale blubber over his English muffins with a sigh of rapturous pleasure. "Ah, the joys of a morning taste of the Arctic," he said. "I don't care what the board of governors says, it's worth every Knut to get this imported from Spitsbergen."
Sprout shook her head in disbelief. "Honestly, Headmaster, how do you stay so thin?" she said. "Poppy makes me breakfast on half a grapefruit and a slice of dry toast, and I still know I'll have gained three ounces by lunchtime."
Dumbledore's eyes twinkled. "Well, now, there's the importance of a balanced diet," he said, and lifted his mug of cocoa. "Nothing like a bit of peppermint every morning to quicken one's metabolism."
"Cedric Diggory and Lily Summers have been best friends since infantry. In their 6th year, their friendship is put to the ultimate test." –SlytherinSorceress17, summary to "Forever Summer"
An orange helicopter emblazoned with the DA logo settled itself on the Hogwarts lawn, and Sergeant-Major Cedric Diggory turned ruefully to his dearest comrade-in-arms. "Well, so long, Lils," he said. "I'll see you… when I see you, I guess."
2nd Lieutenant Lily Summers, swallowing painfully, was unable to respond. She and Cedric had been inseparable since their second year, when they had served side by side in the 3rd Hufflepuff Light Infantry; though they had gone on to receive commissions in different divisions of Dumbledore's Army, she had never envisioned that the two of them might end up on opposite sides of the world for upwards of a year. Now, with Cedric's aerial cavalry being called out to conduct a war of attrition against an uprising of old Grindelwald supporters in Laos, while her own heavy artillery remained in reserve at the school, she could feel her whole world crashing down around her ears.
"You won't forget me, will you, Cedric?" she whispered. "You won't let me forget you?"
Cedric chuckled. "Not a chance," he said. "It'll take more than a few Gellertista jungle rats to bugger up a friendship like ours." He punched her shoulder reassuringly. "Stay strong, soldier."
