As soon as the realization hit, Jack and Bobby plunged for the overgrown teenager, but he was too slick. Knowing that his cover was blown, he slithered out of the way and out the door.
"He's coming out!" Jack announced into his mic.
"I don't have a clean shoot!" The sniper across the street announced when he saw the perp emerge just as a large truck stopped at the stoplight on the corner, hiding the perp from view.
"Following behind!" Bobby yelled as the two agents ran out of the bank to chase after him. They arrived outside just in time to see the perp to turn the corner, disappearing down an alley.
"Can someone block the end of this alley!" Jack yelled as they started chasing after him.
"We can try to get there in time." Dustin said, since he and his partner were in the closest car to the alley, which was idling on the corner of the street just behind the bank.
Everyone stayed quiet as Jack and Bobby ran down the alley and Dustin moved the car. It was a pretty long alley with turns to exit out into the main street, but the perp kept running straight, that is, until he saw Dustin's car pull up, blocking him from the exit. Pausing for a millisecond, he quickly looked around, then hastily ran back towards Jack and Bobby to take one of the exits out.
"He's turning right!" Jack yelled, the two agents now close on his tail because of his pause.
"Is he going to run into that mall?" Bobby asked when they turned, seeing what was directly across the street from them.
"Looks like." His friend said as they paused to look for traffic before crossing, something their perp barely did, almost being hit by two cars as he crossed.
"He's going into the mall." Bobby announced into his mic as they ran across the street just as the perp disappeared through the doors.
"I'll get people in there with you as soon as I can." Dustin replied, watching the agents disappear inside the mall from the alley.
"Where'd he go?" Bobby asked, the two pausing inside the entrance as they scanned the crowd for their perp. He was nowhere to be found.
"Do you see him?" Jack asked his friend, not taking his eye off the crowd as they slowly walked forward.
"No." His friend replied, gently shaking his head, distracted by the task.
"Alright, let's block all exits, both public and private. If someone wants to get out of this mall, they have to get through us first." Jack said into his mic.
"You got it." Dustin replied.
The two friends sighed as they looked at each other. "How could we have lost him?" Jack asked.
Bobby shrugged, unable to speak.
?-?
"Finally!" Sue exclaimed when Jack answered her FaceTime call and waited for the picture to load.
"Hey, how you guys doing?" Jack asked once the call connected.
She nodded. "Good! We figured out the perp is either Irish, or has spent a lot of time in Ireland and picked up their slurs."
"Good to know." He said. "Not that that information helps us right now."
"No, it doesn't, but that's all we've found out so far. How about you? Have you figured out where he is planning to hit next?"
Jack nodded. "We did, and he attempted to rob the bank while we were there."
"So you got him?" She anticipatedly asked, her comment peaking the interest in Tara and Kimmy, who overheard what she said.
"No." He simply replied.
"What happened?" Sue asked as the two other women walked around so they could listen in on the account.
"Well, we were expecting a guy with a ski mask, right?" When he saw Sue nod, he continued. Mya figured out that he's only hitting banks that are either on, or near this one specific road that goes all the way down the coast. That narrowed it down to 5 possible banks in the area. Knowing this, we created a plan where we would pose as security guards at these 5 banks, and when he'd show up, we'd arrest him.
"But he saw you from a mile away and ran?" She surmised.
He shook his head. "No. Worse."
"What could be worse than that?" Tara asked.
"He was literally right in front of us for a good 10 minutes, and we did absolutely nothing."
"What?" Everyone exclaimed in unison.
He nodded. "Bobby and I were joking about this guy who looked like an overgrown teenager, wearing baggy pants and a hoodie. While he and a little old lady were at the counter, we were told someone pressed the silent alarm. Knowing it wasn't the old lady, we knew it was the guy, we approached him, causing him to run. We chased him down an alley, but he ran into a mall, and by the time we got there, he disappeared into the crowd."
"I hope you shut down the entrances, right?"
He nodded. "We did. And now we're going through security footage to try to see where he went."
"He's changing his MO with each robbery." She said, thinking.
He nodded. "It looks like."
"We found the spot." Everyone except Sue heard Bobby say in the background.
Turning towards his friend to nod, he then turned back to Sue. "I have to go. Talk to you later?"
Sue smiled. "Of course."
With that, the call ended.
"I take that as a cue to get started on this double time." Kimmy surmised.
Tara nodded. "We have to figure out who this guy is, and fast!"
