The boys had arrived at Mauville City. The streets were bustling with activity; vendors selling delicious fried food, several animals running around carefree, even a band performing smooth jazz. The loud saxophones and funky keyboard solos echoed through the Mauville streets. A small crowd formed near the corner where the band played. Some crowd members held up phones while others clapped to the rhythm.
Benedict stopped in his tracks. He pulled his Rotom Phone out and started filming the band. He looked on in awe; it felt like he was in a dream. They were really playing that song…
The drummer, a pink and blue penguin with striking blue eyeshadow, winked to the camera. She spun her drumsticks in the air and hit her cymbals twice.
The keyboardist, a beige duck with a brown bowl cut, bobbed his head up and down. The music vibrated against his soul, his wings elegantly dancing across the black and white keys.
The saxophonist, a teal and yellow eagle, shimmied in his spot as he kept playing. The catchy saxophone lulled in the growing crowd.
His solo grew louder, to the point it echoed downstairs. A loud pounding thumped from the floors. It sounded like….punching?
The saxophonist stopped playing. He looked back at the streets; the crowd applauded him.
"Thanks, everyone!"
he called out, with a big grin across his beak. "That was Fly Me to the Moon!"
Benedict stopped recording. It WAS that song!
The eagle set his instrument down. He grabbed something from a small table; a stack of business cards. While his band members took a break, he handed everyone in the crowd a card.
Benedict looked down at the card; it read "Jubilife Delight. Make a move, because it's all in your head!"
He stashed the card in his pocket, then ran off to catch up with the group.
"Dude, where'd you run off to?"
Tank asked. "Was there a Pokemon battle?"
"Nope!" Benedict shook his head, then showed him the card. "I just saw these guys, an' they were great!"
Tank looked down at the card; huh, neat.
"So, they came all the way from Sinnoh just to perform on the streets? You know, most big musicians usually perform out in Lilycove City."
"How big are we talking?"
Kidd asked. "Like, K.K. Slider big?"
"K.K. Slider?" Benedict tilted his head. "Now who's that?"
Tank and Kidd gasped. They yelled at the same time
"HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW KK SLIDER?!"
Benedict flinched from the surprise yelling, tilting his head in confusion.
"I don't know who y'all are talkin' about, seriously"
"He's only the biggest musician in the Hoenn region," Kidd explained. He pulled his Rotom Phone out and looked him, up stopping to show him a flashy album cover. "He's one of those guys who can play any style of music" he scrolled down his phone, showing off different pages.
Tank nodded
"And I heard he used to be the former champion"
"A former champion?"
Benedict asked. He placed his hands in his hoodie pockets "So, wait, was he a champion first or a musician?"
"If I remember, a champion"
Tank placed a hoof on his chin. "What I heard is he started performing music after Apollo beat him"
"No freakin' way"
Benedict gasped. "Now y'all got me wonderin' what kinda Pokemon that K.K. Slider's been usin'!"
"I'm not sure"
Tank led everyone to the courtyard, then to the Pokemon Center. "But I heard his Pokémon sometimes join him on songs"
"If you ask me, those are the better ones"
Kidd pushed the door open. "He sounds more organic that way, non?"
A long line formed in front of the counter. Several animals pushed and shoved in front of the boys, trying to get in first. Kidd looked closer; most of the animals were dressed in colorful spandex. A few of the animals even held….body pillows?!
"Um, excuse me?"
Tank asked the animal in front of him. "What's with the long line?"
"We're booking rooms for a convention"
The other animal, an orange pig with freckles on his face, explained. "You guys ever heard of this show called Crossing Riders Go?"
Benedict and Kidd looked at each other in confusion; what the heck was Crossing Riders Go? Did it air at some point in Unova or Kalos?
"Yeah, I have!"
Tank perked up. "My brother and I watched it when we were kids! I didn't know they had a convention here!"
"Oh yeah, they usually have Crossing Con over in Saffron City" the pig explained. "But this year, Pretty Refresh is having their con there. So, Crossing Con got moved to Mauville"
"That makes sense,"
Tank nodded. "So, who's your favorite Crossing Rider?"
"Kid Cat for sure" the pig gushed. "His Blazing Cat Kicks were awesome! Well, one time, I tried to do it, I knocked over a vase, and my mom was like "Kevin, if you're gonna play like that, at least take it outside!' "
"Kid Cat was great, but"
Tank nodded. "Big Top was my favorite. I liked how he could fight while eating at the same time!"
The line moved inch by inch. While Kevin and Tank rambled about Crossing Rider Go, Kidd and Benedict snuck off to the cafe. They ordered an iced cold brew, hot chocolate and Roserade tea with a matcha shot.
Even after ordering their drinks, the line was still impossibly long. A fight broke out; apparently a trainer used their Abra to teleport closer to the counter.
Kidd sipped from his cold brew.
"Really? All that over a convention that's not happening for a week?"
"Must be a really fun one,"
Benedict shrugged. He loudly slurped his drink, blissfully unaware of the whipped cream smeared across his beak.
Kidd handed him a floral print handkerchief. He watched as Benedict grabbed it, then wiped the whipped cream right off himself.
"Heh, thanks"
Benedict blushed as he handed it right back.
"Bad news, guys!"
Tank walked up to the table
"I got us a room, but it has only one bed"
Kidd facepalmed
"How is that bad news?!"
Tank crossed his arms and sat down
"It's not a double bed"
"Aw come on!"
Benedict groaned. "It'll be a tight squeeze in a single"
"It'll be fine," Tank reassured him. He looked down at the table. "Oh, you got my favorite tea? Thanks Kidd!"
"It's no problem," Kidd smiled as he watched Tank sip from the teacup. He placed his chin in his hooves, watching the two of them finish their drinks.
Tank sat down on one of the beds. He pulled several things out of his backpack; his sketchbook, some pencils, a marker and all of his Poke Balls.
"What to draw…." he thought to himself. "Oh hey!"
He opened his sketchbook and got to work; drawing a Tentacool splashing around in a bathtub. He stuck his tongue out as he added water drops to the tentacles, along with plenty of bubbles floating in the air.
Benedict stormed out of the bathroom, wrapped up in a fluffy white towel. His hair was damp, a few strands falling in front of his eyes.
Tank looked up from his drawing
"Let me guess; Kidd kicked you out for his two hour shower?"
"Nope, two and a half this time!"
Benedict sat down and crossed his arms. "An' there's no way in hell I'd share a shower with anyone!"
"But what about–" Tank tried to bring up.
"An' no, that onsen doesn't count,"
Benedict interrupted his boyfriend, furiously blushing the whole time. "It's just personal, alright?"
"Alright"
Tank shrugged. "Hey, look what I drew"
"Sure" Benedict looked at the drawing and laughed.
"I hope that Tentacool's the only one in there!"
"Oh don't worry, he is"
Tank stuck his tongue out. He added some shading to the bathtub.
Several hours later, the boys were curled up in bed, fast asleep, arms draped over each other.
The room was quiet except for light breathing.
However, Mauville City was still busy. Streetlights were on, few businesses were open, along with several nightclubs. Music pounded from the nightclubs, echoing onto the main floor. Loud thumping echoed, and not just from the music. Several lightbulbs surged, suddenly going out with a pop.
—-
Tank woke up early. He looked up from the covers; why was the room so dark? He grabbed his phone; it was 7:05 AM. That's odd. Despite being plugged in, the phone's battery hadn't charged whatsoever, only at eighty-five percent.
Kidd groaned from his spot "You're crushing my arm"
"Oh, sorry"
Tank scooted to the left. He pushed some hair from Kidd's eyes, then looked down. "I just don't get it"
"Get what?"
Kidd yawned. He wriggled in his spot, trying to bury himself deeper under the comforter.
"This"
Tank showed him the phone. "It's plugged in, yet didn't charge overnight"
"Maybe the outlet's broken?"
Kidd suggested. He pulled the blanket up. "I'd try another one"
"Alright" Tank shrugged. He grabbed his charger and walked around the room. Even after each attempt, none of the outlets would work. Maybe it was a charger issue? But the cable was still new, and so was the charger. Heck, his phone was charging last night when he looked up references for that Tentacool. Wait, let's try something else.
Tank went up to the door. He tried turning the lights on, but they wouldn't turn on. Now this was weird. A power outage?
He got dressed, grabbed his Poké Balls and walked to the main floor. A group of trainers clamored around the counter, holding up Poke Balls to Nurse Shizue's face.
"I'm sorry!" Nurse Shizue tried to calm the crowd down. "But our generator can only handle so much energy. I can only take one Poké Ball at a time!"
This was weird. Tank walked to the cafe counter; now why was nobody there. There was a sign on the counter; it read
"Due to the current power issue, Pokemon Center Cafe will be temporarily closed for the day"
Okay, now it made sense. Tank went back upstairs and into his room. Kidd was barely awake while Benedict was still fast asleep.
Kidd looked up from the bed, his eyes heavy and hair still a mess
"Tank? What's going on?"
"The power's out in Mauville City" Tank explained. "I think we should get out of here."
"Okay?" Kidd yawned. He rubbed his eyes. "Wait, so, all the power?"
"All of it" Tank shook his head. "The Pokemon Center does have a generator, but there's a huge line just to heal Pokémon. Also the cafe's closed for the day"
"Greaaaat"
Kidd dragged himself out of bed. "Tank, do you have an air horn on you?"
"Why would I have an air horn on me–?"
Tank asked before realizing. "Kidd, NO!"
"Oh come on!"
Kidd yelled. "It'd wake him up, and I want to get out of here. What kind of city just loses power overnight?!"
Tank shrugged. "I have a better idea. Just watch me"
He walked up to the bed, grabbed the covers, and tried to yank it off.
Benedict jolted up and grabbed the blanket back. He death glared at everyone else
"Can't y'all let a guy sleep in peace?!"
Tank crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow
"Trust me Benedict, I would've let you sleep in, but the power's out. And we already decided we're heading out of here"
"Ugh, fine!" Benedict rolled his eyes. "But if I pass out on the streets, I hope y'all will pick me up"
"Oh, we will,"
Kidd snickered. "You're cute when you're angry"
Two hours later, the boys were out and about on the streets.
Mauville City was completely dark. Not a single light flickered in the advanced darkness.
Tank rummaged through his backpack; he pulled out a flashlight and turned it on.
The group walked on one of the paths; Mauville City felt unfamiliar. This wasn't the bright and shiny city of fun, this was a dark and dull city closing in on itself.
Every building was shut down; no vendors selling hot snacks, no street musicians jamming for a quick buck, nothing.
The boys kept walking, looking around for signs of life. A few animals tried to walk inside, but were stopped upon realizing the doors were automatic.
A pleasant sounding ding echoed from their phones. The boys sat down at a bench.
Tank pulled his out first; the screen read "Emergency Alert: Mauville City has issued a Dangerous Pokemon Warning"
He swiped the screen; a long text message read:
"EMERGENCY ALERT:
Around 7:15 AM, civil authorities have spotted a dangerous wild Pokemon in the Route 110 area. This is believed to be connected to the power outage reported at 4:05 AM. Upon Mayor Tortimer's request, all residents are advised to stay in shelter, with the exemption of Pokémon Trainers"
Someone flashed a light in their faces.
Tank and Kidd flinched from the blinding light, while Benedict glared at the offending trainer.
"Oh, uh, sorry!"
Static jolted up. He moved the flashlight away. "Hey, it's you guys"
"Oh, howdy there Static,"
Benedict waved. "Y'all mind tellin' me what else is goin' on with Mauville?"
"City-wide power outage" Static shrugged his shoulders. "And before you ask, no, I don't know what Pokémon caused it. Mayor Tortimer asked that I check in New Mauville"
"Do y'all need someone to come with?"
Benedict asked.
"As a matter of fact"
Static tapped his foot on the ground. "Yeah. I need some strong trainers with me"
Kidd crossed his arms
"What about your gym trainers?"
"Ah, I had them in charge of other tasks" Static shrugged. "They're using their Pokémon as backup generators for anyone who needs it"
"Sounds like a good plan" Tank nodded. "So, where exactly is New Mauville?"
"I'll show ya. Boys, come with me"
Static led the way.
The boys looked at each other and shrugged. They didn't have to be anywhere right now, and even gym leaders need a little help with some friends.
Tank turned his flashlight off.
After a quick sprint through Mauville City, the group made it outside. A thick wind blasted through Route 110, knocking entire branches off the trees. Several branches floated in the water.
Static walked up to the water. He kneeled down and placed a paw in the water, the cool water feeling refreshing on his fur.
"So" he asked. "Any of you guys have Pokemon big enough to swim on?"
"Yep"
Benedict grabbed one of his Poke Balls. He tossed it to the water and released Asuka.
Static jumped up. His eyes widened as he looked up at the Pokemon before him
"Since when did you have a Gyarados?!"
"Well, she just evolved a few days ago"
Benedict walked up to his Pokémon. Asuka lowered her head, staying still as her trainer climbed atop of her ahead. He wrapped his hands around her head crest.
"I... I see"
Static nodded. He climbed on top as well, sitting comfortably in front of one of her dorsal fins. The red scales felt smooth to the touch. This was a well cared for Pokemon, Static thought to himself.
Kidd and Tank climbed on text; sitting behind the same dorsal fin. Tank wrapped his hooves around the crest of the fin, while Kidd wrapped his arms around Tank's waist.
"Ready, Asuka?"
Benedict called out.
"Now!"
Asuka dove deep underwater. Thick murky seaweed wrapped around her tail as she darted through the cool waters, but it didn't slow her down. A colony of Goldeen followed behind her, curious on where the red serpent headed to.
The atrocious Pokemon popped her head above the surface, looking back on the trainers aboard. Fortunately, everyone was doing alright. Soaked to the core, yes, but still alright.
"Static!" Benedict called out. "I don't see anythin' out here!"
"Look for a blue building!"
Static hollered. "It should have a grey roof!"
"Got it!"
Benedict hollered. He placed his wing on his forehead, looking for the building in question. A-ha! A blue building to the right side! And with sparks flying off… the antennae?
"Asuka!"
he pointed into the skies. "Go to the right!"
"GYAOOOOOO!"
Asuka howled before diving back in with a splash. She darted past thick rocks and batted tires away with her tail.
She made a sharp turn to the right, her pace slowing down as the lake grew shallow. The water-type stopped several feet from the small beach in front of her. She lifted her head up and lowered it, allowing everyone to easily climb off her.
The gang looked up; indeed there was a light blue building with a grey roof. There were windows in front, but the windows looked dark.
Static shook his fur dry, then spat out a mouthful of lakewater.
"Well, here it is, boys," he explained. "New Mauville"
New Mauville; a failed city of development. Greater Mauville Holdings had planned this underground city as a way to accommodate the rising population of Hoenn. Despite outcries from several Mauville Holding employees, Mayor Tortimer demanded the project be shut down, so as not to harm the wild Pokemon.
Static led the boys inside. The building's interior was a cold shade of grey, and everything smelt like rust and iron. The only light shining inside was from cracks through the ceiling. Uneven tiles and broken construction signs were scattered across the floor.
The floors rattled underneath their feet.
Everyone turned their flashlights on, shining them through the long abandoned power plant. Two wild Pikachu looked away from the blinding lights.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the power plant.
Several groups of Pokémon ran away from the trainers. A horde of Voltorb rolled away to a trap door, while a colony of Pikachu hopped onto a hanging steel bar.
The footsteps echoed harder. A strange sound echoed from the lower floor, like a hybrid of a shredding guitar and surging power box.
Static lowered his lantern through a clearing. He squinted and peered down; the only thing he could see was two flicking red lights.
Something marched upwards. It felt like New Mauville was rattling in its spot, but this was no earthquake. Several pieces of scrap metal fell onto the floor with a thud.
Static groaned as his flashlight suddenly died.
"Clearly this is a lucky day for me," he muttered, then looked up. "Um, boys?"
The boys' faces turned white, everyone frozen in place.
"What's all the racket, huh? A Ghost-type in here?"
Static asked.
"No, look behind you, sir!"
Tank pointed upwards.
"Huh?"
Static looked behind his shoulder. He turned around and screamed.
A golden yellow Pokémon towered over the group, clusters of blue sparks flying off its body. The Pokémon had strange black markings across its body, tall yellow antennae, furious red eyes and massive arms that could crush steel bars like grapes. Its two black tails whipped through the air, the red tips glowing brightly.
The Pokemon took a deep breath in and roared. It furiously slammed a fist against one of the iron pillars. The pillar rattled in its spot, quaking like a bowl of gelatin.
Tank grabbed his Rotom Phone and snapped a picture of the wild Pokémon, skimming through the text that popped up.
"Electivire, the Thunderbolt Pokemon. An electric type. As its electric charge amplifies, blue sparks begin to crackle between its horns. A female Electivire once kept a Meowth as a pet of its own, causing a debate if a Pokemon can be a trainer."
The Electivire roared again, grabbing a sheet of metal from the ceiling. Without any effort, it bent the metal sheet in two before hurling it at the trainers. The group jumped away, lucky that the scrap metal didn't rip them apart.
"Boys!"
Static commanded. "Get a Pokémon out, we have to fight!"
The boys looked at each other and nodded. They each grabbed a Poke Ball and held them out
"Jojo! Let's go!"
"Comm–BUSKEN!"
Jojo roared as he shadowboxed the air.
"Aquarius! Now"
"Marshtomp, marsh!"
Aquarius sung as she landed on her feet. The water type clapped her fins together, ready for action.
"Fern, I choose you!"
"Grrrr-ovyle!"
Fern held his head up high, overly confident he could take this electric ape down.
"Well then" Static looked on, his eyes sparkling in determination.
"GAUSS! WE'RE SAVING MAUVILLE!"
He threw a Poke Ball in the air, releasing his trusty Magneton. The magnet Pokemon hovered in its spot.
The wild Electivire stomped twice.
"VIREEEEEEEE" its tails flailed through the air, throwing yellow sparks onto the ground.
Static popped his jacket collar
"Gauss, aim for its face with Flash Cannon!"
"Magneee-"
Gauss's eyes glowed white. It pulled its magnets back, forming a sparkling white ball behind its body.
"TONNNNNNNNNNN"
It threw its magnets forward and fired a white and light blue beam.
The wild Electivire tried to punch the beam away, but flinched when the energy blasted in its face.
"Jojo, Flame Charge!"
Jojo leaped up in the air. Bright red flames coated his body as he kicked Electivire in the face. The flames flew through the air, small sparks fizzling on the pillars.
"Fern! Leaf Blade!"
Fern's arms glowed lime green. He jumped up and slashed the wild Pokemon on the chest. Light green leaves flew from his arms. Electivire swatted at its opponent, but only swiped away at the leaves.
"Aquarius, Mud Shot!"
Aquarius struck a pose. She opened her mouth and blasted a barrage of brown mud balls at her opponent.
Electivire stepped backwards as the mud splattered against its face. Once the last ball exploded, Electivire hissed at its opponents, clenching its hands into tight fists. White crystals grew from its arms as the temperature dropped several degrees. The wild Pokemon pulled a fist back and punched Aquarius in the stomach. The freezing cold crystals shattered in front of her.
The punch catapulted Aquarius through the air. She screamed and crashed against the wall. A large dent formed behind her.
"Aquarius!" Kidd screamed. "Are you all right?!"
Aquarius groaned as she got back on her feet. The mud fish Pokemon dragged herself closer to the other Pokemon. Despite the hit, she wasn't ready to give up yet.
"Marsh-TOMP!" she barked.
"Heh," Static snorted. "That Marshtomp of yours is one tough cookie"
He cracked his knuckles.
"Gauss, use Tri Attack!"
"Magggggggneeeeee"
Gauss's magnets glowed white. Three orbs of energy formed in front of its units; each glowing different colors. The orbs fused into a bright beam of energy.
"TONNNNNNNN"
Gauss blasted the beam into Electivire's neck. Red flames, blue shards of ice, and yellow sparks exploded, relentlessly pelting the walls and ceiling.
Electivire stumbled backwards, then stomped back down to regain its footing. Bright orange flames swirled around its left fist.
"VIREEEEEEEEE" the wild Pokemon roared as it whipped its fist around like a lasso.
Benedict snapped his fingers
"Jojo! Double Kick its fist, now!"
"Combusk-EN!"
Jojo leaped high into the air. He flipped in his spot and landed two kicks against Electivire's knuckles. Despite the flurry of kicks, Electivire's fist stayed closed.
"Aquarius, use Water Gun!"
"Marsh-TOMP!"
Aquarius took a deep breath in. She spewed a strong blast of water onto Electivire's fists, putting out the fire. The flames dissolved into calming steam.
"Fern, Fury Cutter!"
Fern leaped through the steam, feeling refreshingly powered from the cleared air. His arms glowed green as he slashed several times at Electivire's chest.
The wild Electivire flicked Fern away, then stepped backwards. It lowered its head and pulled its fists back, muscles throbbing in sync with its panting.
It closed its eyes, took a deep breath in, and roared loud enough to rattle the entire building. The thunderbolt Pokemon let loose a flurry of punches, brutally attacking all four Pokemon. A dust cloud formed around the battlefield, flames and ice shards and sparks flying around in the air.
The guys tried to recall their Pokemon to safety, but couldn't find them anywhere in the dust cloud. Gauss darted out of the cloud, moving back to Static's side. The magnet Pokemon only had a small bruise on its right side and dirt on the left magnet.
The cloud faded away, confirming the worst.
Electivire stood proud in the middle, crossing its arms and looking up in confidence. Fern, Jojo and Aquarius were tossed around on the ground, unable to get up. Small flames flickered off Fern's body, Jojo was covered in bright yellow sparks, and Aquarius was frozen in her spot.
The boys looked on in horror. If this beast could effortlessly knock out their starters, then the rest of their party would be decimated. They returned their Pokemon back to safety.
Static stepped in front of the boys, guarding them like a father protecting his children. He took his jacket off and placed it next to him. Next, he unbuttoned the top part of his jumpsuit. The squirrel tied the sleeves around his waist, revealing a skintight black tank top. Clearly, he was going to the gym.
The wild Electivire wrapped its tendrils around two quiet generators. With its tails, it could absorb any remaining electricity to heal itself.
Static thought quick; electric moves would be useless, Mirror Shot could only do so much, and Tri Attack would just fuel its pummeling. Time for a last resort.
He pointed at his Pokemon's opponent
"Hyper Beam"
"Maggggg-"
Gauss took a deep breath in. Its eyes glowed bright red as its magnets heated up. Bright red and blue energy swirled around its body, forming into a blinding white ball.
The boys snuck behind a fallen steel beam, hidden away safely but looking on to see the battle play out.
"Neeee….."
The electric type droned as the white ball grew twice its size.
The wild Electivire pulled its tails off the generators. It looked on in disapproval; what's a pesky little magnet going to do, huh?
"NOW!" Static screamed at the top of his lungs. "DON'T HOLD BACK!"
"TONNNNN!"
Gauss screeched as it blasted a ridiculously powerful beam. The white beam fired through the air, changing different colors as it fired through all of New Mauville.
Electivire tried to block the blast with its forearms, but screamed as the beam blasted anyways. The sheer power hurled Electivire across the floor, slamming it against the wall with a deep crater.
The slam echoed through the entire room, rattling the walls and floor with a rumble.
"Mighty fine job, Gauss" Static calmly assured his Pokemon. He put his jumpsuit back on, shuddering from a sudden chill in the air.
The duo slowly approached the walls. Electivire was still pressed against the wall, weakly groaning as it tried to get back on its feet.
Static closed his eyes, grasping an Ultra Ball. He hurled the Ultra Ball like a baseball pitcher as it spun through the air. The Ultra Ball smacked against the wild Electivire's forehead, forcibly absorbing the Pokemon inside and falling to the ground. The ball rocked three times, then stopped with a large ding. Small white stars shot out from the lid.
Static opened his eyes. The Electivire wasn't here anymore; did it mean?
He walked up to the Ultra Ball and picked it up. Gauss hovered behind its trainer, looking on in interest.
"Look at this" Static showed the Ultra Ball to his trusty companion. "And all because of you"
"Magne!" Gauss screeched its magnets spinning around in excitement. "Ton, TON"
The magnet Pokémon stopped in its spot and began to glow blue.
Its silhouette compressed on itself, then grew several inches. A long antennae formed from its middle, while two larger magnets formed from its size.
The blue light exploded into small red and blue fireworks, just like a summer day in Unova.
Gauss was a completely different Pokemon, like something out of a sci-fi movie. Instead of resembling three Magnemite jammed together, its body was sleek and shaped like a UFO. Its yellow antennae hummed while the magnets on its side rotated clockwise.
"Mag-mag-magne-ZONE!" Gauss buzzed.
Static gasped. He held his paw out to his Pokemon.
"Gauss…..look at you"
He smiled for the first time that day.
"So powerful"
"Zone, zone!"
Gauss spun its magnets around, closing its eyes in happiness.
"It makes me think," Static pondered. "I've trained you for seven years, and this is the spot you evolve in? I wonder if this old plant affects other Pokemon. Boys?"
He looked around the room
"Hello? Boys?!"
"We're right here, sir!" Tank hollered and waved from behind the iron bar.
Static walked up to the trio, holding onto his Ultra Ball.
"So" he asked. "You boys know anything about fixing a generator?"
"I thought fixing it was your job," Kidd pointed out.
"Well, yes, but" Static explained. "I can't do all of it by myself. I mean, look, it's still dark in here. Obviously I'm going to need a few hands for holding up flashlights!"
Tank tilted his head
"But don't you have some Electric types that can just light things up?"
Static chuckled with a heavy snort.
"You guys are such smartasses"
"Not smartasses, just pointing out logic," Kidd shrugged.
Static rolled his eyes. "I know what logic is, and you guys are helping with the generator no matter what"
Without any more sarcastic quips, the boys followed Static to a large grey machine. He flipped open a control panel and checked everything; no torn out wires or missing switches. So it was only a wild Pokemon problem...
"Boys?" he asked. "Can I borrow your Rotoms for a minute?"
The boys held their Rotom Phones out, watching as the trio of plasma Pokemon popped out. They hovered around Static's head, leering in at the gizmo.
Static whispered to the trio of Rotom. He pointed at a conductor placed in the middle of the generator.
On cue, the Rotom hovered up to the generator. Their bodies glowed white as they used Thunderbolt to kickstart the generator.
"Yes, that's perfect!" Static hollered to the plasma Pokemon. His eyes lit up as the generator drew power again; the control panel glowed a healthy shade of green. He closed the generator shut.
The Rotom hovered back to their trainers, going back into the phones.
"I don't get it" Kidd asked. "Why did you need the Rotom specifically?"
"Well boys" Static turned around to explain. "I figured since you had Rotom Phones, they'd be great use. See, Rotom that are used for electrical devices are exceptionally strong. I mean, think about it. If they can run entire devices then they should be strong, no? Thanks for being a great help"
"Yeah, it was no prob" Benedict nodded. "Heck I was glad to see y'all weren't gettin' rusty"
Static snorted
"What? You thought because I lost one gym battle means I'm going soft? No way!"
Two hours later...
"Here you go, everyone"
Nurse Shizue smiled and handed the guys their Poke Balls.
"I just couldn't thank you all enough for fixing Mauville City"
The boys stayed inside the Pokemon Center, taking some time to play with their Pokemon. Luckily, the battle wasn't too hard on their physique, but only left the Pokemon mentally exhausted for the rest of the day.
Static walked to the courtyard. He tossed his Ultra Ball up, releasing his Electivire.
The electric-type looked around in confusion. The last thing she remembered was that power plant, raw electricity pulsing through her body and driving her berserk. But here she was, her feet pressed against grass and bright lights shining on her.
The squirrel held his paw out
"Could I call you Tesla?"
Electivire stayed quiet. She thought to herself; Tesla actually sounded quite nice. She clapped her hands twice and roared in delight,
"Vire!"Tesla scooped up her trainer and squeezed him tight, her tails flickering in joy.
Static sputtered and wheezed from the tight hug, flailing his feet in the air.
"That's- that's good, Tesla! Boy, you seem affectionate! Now put me down, please!"
"Electi-VIRE!"
Tesla accidentally zapped her trainer. A long trail of grey smoke hovered into the air.
Static's fur was singed grey as he bristled in his spot.
"...that was an understatement"
He hopped down from his Pokémon, brushing some dirt off his fur.
"STATIC!" Three feminine voices shouted.
Bella, Tammi and Victoria ran up to their boss, waving in concern.
"Are you okay?"
Tammi asked as she helped him back up. "We were worried for hours!"
"Yeah, you didn't call us the whole time!" Victoria shouted. She looked back up at the Pokémon. "Wait a sec, was-"
"Yes" Static pointed up. "This Electivire is the reason the power went out. Don't worry, she's calm now. I think she just had too much electricity to eat. Right?"
"Vire, vire!" Tesla roared at the top of her lungs, raising both fists in the air to show off her guns.
"How'd you get things fixed so fast though?" Bella asked. "I mean, I thought it would've taken forever to get her calmed down!"
"Well"
Static smiled up in the air.
"Let's just say I got a little help from my friends"
