Hey, there!
It's been a while... I'm sorry I have not been very active here or on Twitter lately, but I have been traveling and now I don't have much time...
I have a few more chapters already written, so I'm going to publish them when I can, but for now I can't promise the story will be finished anytime soon!
Hope you enjoy it if there's still someone reading around here!
Happy Sunday xxx
It had been a couple of days since Elizabeth left Henry in his apartment to talk things out with Rochana and she hadn't heard from him since. He hadn't come back to the office yet and she was starting to worry.
Elizabeth went back straight to the office, unable to sit still at home, trying her best to follow the doctor's orders although she was not the best patient. She cut down on screen time and avoided reading as much as she could, the headache persisting. She felt dizzy from time to time and her concentration was not there anymore. She thought after a few days, she would feel better but her symptoms weren't going away.
By the fifth day, Elizabeth's symptoms had gotten better and she was able to make a bit of progress collecting all the information of their stakeout. That afternoon, while she was trying to analyze what they'd collected, the phone in her office rang. She took the call, figuring it would be work related as she kept reading the files in front of her. "Adams."
"Elizabeth, hi. It's Henry." Her heart skipped a bit only from hearing his voice after almost a week.
"Henry, hey. How are you?" she asked, concerned.
"I'm sorry I couldn't call sooner. I had a lot of things to take care of. I'm doing okay. How are you?" he asked, trying to change the topic.
"Good. I'm feeling much better and I've been back at work for a few days now." she explained, happy to be able to talk to him again, even if it was through the phone. "How's your leg?"
"Much better. Tomorrow I have my doctor's appointment, but it barely hurts anymore." He explained.
"That's good, Henry. I'm glad." she said. "I was thinking that today I would go get your car from the hospital. Is it okay if I drop it off at your apartment later? I can bring coffee."
Henry hesitated a bit before answering. "Thing is, I'm not living there anymore. Do you think you could bring it to the Byron Hotel?"
Elizabeth felt the air leave her lungs at the question. She knew things would be bad between them, but she was not quite expecting him to move out. Although, I'm glad he did.
"Elizabeth?" Henry pressed, at the lack of the response.
"Sorry. Yes. I'll bring it there today after work." she said quickly, coming back from her thoughts.
"Thank you. See you later, then." Henry said, before the line went dead leaving Elizabeth unable to give a response back.
She sighed, feeling bad for Henry as she knew he was going through a hard time.
When Elizabeth was tired of going through all the material they collected, she left the office and went to the hospital to retrieve Henry's car. It took her a while to find it, she had no idea where he parked it as she was still unconscious when they arrived there.
Once in the car, she started it and drove all the way to the hotel Henry had named over the phone. She asked at the reception the number of his room, getting inside the elevator, and stopping right behind his door. Should I knock? Well, I have to give him back the keys… But what if he's mad at me? What if he's going to tell me he's leaving? Why do I care about all of it so much?
She took a deep breath before knocking softly on his door. She heard muffled sounds behind the door, probably Henry managing to get up to open the door for her. When he did, their eyes locked as they had so many times before. It was only slightly different this time, but neither of them could figure out why.
"Elizabeth…" Henry breathed out.
"Hey… Can I come in?" She asked tentatively, not knowing how his mood was.
"Of course." he said, stepping away from the door so she had some room to enter.
Elizabeth walked through the doorway while he closed the door behind her. She sat down on the end of his bed, leaving the car keys on his nightstand and turned to look at him expectantly.
"You knew." was the only thing he said, as he struggled a bit to walk towards the other side of the bed, taking a seat.
"I did. I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but it wasn't my place to do so. You needed to figure that out yourselves." she apologized, knowing where this was going. He hates me again for not telling him the truth.
"That we did. Rochana told me that you gave her the opportunity to say something for herself, but if she didn't you threatened to tell me everything." he continued, wanting to know exactly what had happened. His mind had been a jumbled mess for days now.
"Well, yeah. I mean, she was the one supposed to tell you and you needed her to do that, not me. But I couldn't have gone on seeing you every day at work knowing everything and keeping my mouth shut. Especially after all I've seen you do to save your marriage." she said, looking at the ground and fidgeting with her hands.
"I understand. Thank you for forcing her hand." he said, looking at her intently. He knew she was nervous, and tried to soften the tone. He didn't want to make her uncomfortable after everything she had done for him. It's not her fault. In fact, I will forever be grateful to her for this.
Elizabeth looked up in surprise, hearing the change in the tone. "Of course. Can I ask what happened after I left the apartment?"
Henry sighed. "We argued. I was so hurt that she wasn't even able to come to the hospital that I told her some awful things. I had been trying to overlook a lot and it all came out. In return, she told me how much of a mistake was marrying me and how for over a year, she has been seeing someone else." he explained. "I was trying so hard to keep things going that I totally lost sight of what was going on in front of me. No wonder we couldn't hold any meaningful conversation and whenever we had sex she was less than interested…" he laughed bitterly when the last sentence came out.
"I'm so sorry. At least you were able to talk - or scream - things through and get them out of your system." she said, with a recomforting smile. "So, what now?"
"First thing I did was to get some of my things and get out of there. I've been living here since then and I'm looking for an apartment." he said, chucking sadly. "I also hired a lawyer to handle the divorce. I'm so hurt right now that I don't want to see her, much less talk to her about this."
"And how's your leg?" she asked, changing the topic as she sensed he wasn't going to talk about what happened much more.
Henry thanked her for it internally. "Much better. It hurt a bit although it wasn't more than a scratch. Tomorrow I will go to the hospital, and hopefully I'll be back to work afterwards."
"Great!" Elizabeth exclaimed happily at the news. "I have to admit, I've even missed you a bit these past few days…" she teased him, truth showing in her words. More than you'll ever know.
"You really have?" Henry asked with a side smile, his heart skipping a beat at the admission.
"Yes. But I'm sure when you're back I'll regret it." she laughed, feeling lighter than ever before. "I should get going, see you tomorrow?" she asked, making her way to the bedroom door.
"See you tomorrow." he answered, as she was opening the door. When it felt shut, he muttered: "I missed you too."
