I do not own Harry Potter, only the OC
Hello guys, Badger here. I have a new story for you all. A story that is different to the others. You've probably seen the story summary. I have plans for this story that will take this story in different directions to my other stories so far. I believe this will be the first story I've done where Harry becomes an all-powerful wizard, leading the light side. I can't wait to see what happens in upcoming chapters.
That is all for now. I hope you enjoy this first chapter and I'll see you at the end.
Chapter 1
The Right Thing
Dumbledore had his head in his hands, as he sat in his office at Hogwarts. By now the news would have spread. The Dark Lord known as Voldemort had been defeated. But it came at a price. Namely, the lives of James and Lily Potter. Two of Hogwarts' best students. Their hideout was a wreck. James Potter had gone against Voldemort, defending his family so they could get away but, despite James being stronger than an average wizard, even he wasn't strong enough to go against the most powerful Dark Lord. Lily had barricaded herself and her son, Harry in the nursery. Lily died, protecting Harry, which proved to be the Dark Lords downfall. Her sacrifice protected Harry, with some ancient magic, rebounding the Dark Lords Killing Curse, destroying Voldemort's body. However, Dumbledore knew he would return. Voldemort created Horcrux's. It was only a matter of time, until he returned. When Dumbledore arrived at Godric's Hollow, he called for some Aurors, so James and Lilys funeral could be arranged, and he brought Harry to Hogwarts, for any possible treatment.
The boy was unscathed, only having a lightning bolt scar on his forehead. After a few diagnostic charms, Dumbledore was relieved to see that there was no dark magic behind it. It was just a normal scar. The boy was now in a transfigured crib, by his desk, sleeping peacefully. However, this meant the prophecy was fulfilled. Harry was the Chosen One. When the time came, Harry would be the one to defeat Voldemort for good. Of course, when Harry went to Hogwarts he will need to be trained for that moment. However, the main priority now, was figuring out where Harry was going to live. Dumbledore looked up, when his office door opened, and Professor McGonagall entered, looking distraught.
"Albus, I received your summons" She said, tears pricking her eyes "Is…is it true…what I've heard…are James and Lily…"
"I'm afraid so Minerva" Dumbledore nodded, gently moving the crib, revealing Harry to her
McGonagall slowly moved to the crib, looking down at the sleeping bundle that was Harry. A tear began to fall down her cheek, as she placed a gentle hand on the babies head, stroking the few strands of hair, that Harry had.
"How did it come to this?" McGonagall whispered, her voice whispered, before turning back to Dumbledore "What do we do Albus?"
"The first priority, is finding a suitable home for young Harry" Dumbledore replied, interlocking his hands together, resting his chin on his palms "I've tried contacting both Sirius and Remus, but they seemed to have disappeared…I believe they've gone looking for Pettigrew, as you and I both know, he was the true Secret Keeper…only he could have given the Dark Lord their location"
"So what options do we have?" McGonagall asked
"I looked through James and Lily's family, seeing if they had any family members still alive" Dumbledore sighed "James has no family left, but there is Petunia and…"
"Albus, you aren't suggesting that Harry goes to live at the Dursleys!" McGonagall exclaimed "Petunia has had a hatred for the Wizarding World, ever since Lily received her Hogwarts letter and I imagine Vernon is even worse…Harry will be treated like a slave at that place"
"I have a feeling that you're right" Dumbledore sighed "However, I can't think of another solution, Minerva…what do you suggest?"
"How about he lives here, at the castle?" McGonagall replied "This is the safest place he could be, especially with Hogwarts staff, the ghosts and portraits watching over him"
"Minerva, you're right, I agree" Dumbledore smiled gently, but was concerned, as he looked at the sleeping bundle "Of course, living in a large castle like this, he might feel lonely…"
"James and Lily were friends with both the Badgers and the Weasleys, I'm sure playdates could be arranged" McGonagall smiled "I'm sure you remember, Malcolm named his own son after James Potter, the two were close…surprisingly so, seeing as Malcolm was a Slytherin"
"I remember" Dumbledore's eyes twinkled "Inform the other Professors, I'll have the House Elves arrange a room for Harry…and hopefully we can find Sirius and Remus too"
McGonagall nodded and left the office. Dumbledore smiled, as he looked at Harry. The baby hadn't moved an inch. Dumbledore removed his wand and waved it over Harry's head, making sure the boy had nice dreams. Dumbledore was glad that McGonagall suggested Harry live at the castle. Dumbledore couldn't imagine what would happen if Harry lived anywhere else. With the boy living at the castle, he will be kept safe, and Dumbledore would protect the boy, with his life.
…
Harry felt groggy, as he woke up. The bright light of the sun, blaring through the windows, was stinging his eyes and he quickly got off his bed and closed the curtains. Harry leant against the wall for a moment, as he spent a moment, to remember what day it was, until a smile made its way onto his face. Today was the day he went to Diagon Alley, to get what he needed for his First Year at Hogwarts. It was his birthday yesterday and, despite knowing he would be going to Hogwarts, Dumbledore had given him an acceptance letter as it was mandatory on the school system. Shaking the cobwebs from his head, Harry started looking for something to wear, when the ghost of Helena Ravenclaw, the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, floated through his bedroom door, making Harry jump a little bit.
"Morning Harry" She said, her voice echoing slightly across the room "I apologise for startling you"
"It's okay" Harry smiled, taking out some clothes "What did you need?"
"Dumbledore has asked that you go to his office after you've finished getting ready" Helena replied
"Okay, thank you Helena" Harry said
Helena nodded and floated back through the door. Harry couldn't help but smile, as he got dressed. When he was little, the sight of ghosts scared him massively. It took a long time for him to get used to being around the dead, but that didn't mean he still wasn't startled on occasion. After getting dressed and trying, and failing, to tame his hair, Harry left his room and made his way down the empty halls, to Dumbledore's office. There were many times, when Harry was growing up, Harry had to keep himself out of sight from students during the school year. Dumbledore had told Harry about his parents and how he was famous, being called the Boy-Who-Lived and Dumbledore didn't want students swarming around Harry, if they found out he lived in the castle. Considering all the fan mail Harry was, and still is, receiving Harry was glad that he did so. Though, there was one student who found him wondering the corridors. She was a Hufflepuff and agreed to keep it a secret, that Harry was living in the castle. Her name was Nymphadora Tonks and, despite how childish it seemed, they had a secret friendship. She was fun to be around.
She graduated last year, and Harry remembered crying into her shirt, as she hugged him. However, the two kept in touch, often sending letters back and Harry hoped he could meet her again one day. Snapping himself out of his thoughts, Harry made his way towards the door that led to Dumbledores office. The Griffin statue moved its head, looking down at Harry, and seemed to be smile, before moving, revealing the stairs, leading up to the office. Harry made his way up the stairs and didn't need to knock, as he entered the office, where Dumbledore was sat at his desk, looking through the register for this year's new students. Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes, let out a happy cry, upon seeing Harry, flying off of his perch and landing on Harry's shoulder, rubbing his head on Harry's cheek.
"Ah, Harry" Dumbledore smiled at the bond Harry and Fawkes shared "How are you feeling?"
Dumbledore was glad that he agreed to Harry living at the castle. He was slowly growing into a fine young man. Harry was an average height for his age and was quite slender. His eyes were the emerald, green that his mothers were, but he looked a lot like his father, though Harry didn't need glasses like his father did. However, just like James Potter, Harry had the untameable, raven black hair.
"I'm okay, dad" Harry replied, stroking Fawkes' feathers
When Harry was growing up, he wasn't sure what he should call Dumbledore. He wondered if he should call him dad, as he had been his father figure. Harry knew he had a father, James Potter, but Harry had no memory of him, save for that night ten years ago. Then, a few years ago, Harry had accidentally called Dumbledore dad. Dumbledore merely smiled at Harry's embarrassed face. Dumbledore then told him, if Harry wanted to call him dad, then he could, but when he started Hogwarts, he will need to call him professor, like the other students.
"You wanted to see me?" Harry asked, remembering what Helena said
"Yes, considering that you'll be getting your school essentials this year, I decided that I'll be the one, escorting you around Diagon Alley" Dumbledore replied "Whilst I would trust any of the others to do so, it will make me feel better, seeing as I'll know you're safe, if you're with me…and I'm sure you'll see the others there today too"
Harry smiled brightly, as Fawkes flew back onto his perch, to take a nap. It was close to his burning day. Putting away his papers, Dumbledore got up from his desk and placed a hand on Harry's shoulder. After giving Harry a moment to brace himself, Dumbledore apparated the two of them out of the office, where they appeared in Diagon Alley, a few seconds later. When Harry's vision cleared, he looked in awe at the sight before him. The alley was brightly lit, with colourful buildings and all kinds of people walking up and down the alley.
Dumbledore couldn't help but smile at the look on Harry's face. Dumbledore remembered his own reaction to the alley, all those years ago and it was nice to see another person's first reaction. Dumbledore couldn't remember the last time he saw such joy on a new student's face. As Dumbledore had opened Harry's vault a few years previous, Dumbledore didn't bother taking Harry to Gringotts and started taking him to the bookstore. As they made their way down the alley, Dumbledore caught the headline of a nearby newspaper The hunt for Black continues! Dumbledore had informed The DMLE and the Minister that Sirius wasn't the Secret Keeper for the Potters and it was in fact Pettigrew. However, unless Pettigrew was found to prove such a fact, the bounty on Black's head would remain. Over the past ten years, Dumbledore had tried looking for Sirius and Remus, so Pettigrew could be found, but the two of them had disappeared into thin air. Dumbledore feared that they might be dead, but wasn't going to give up, until he found out the truth.
"Oh my god…THAT'S HARRY POTTER!" someone yelled
Dumbledore looked to see people screaming as they began to run over towards them. Noting the worried look on Harry's face, Dumbledore removed his wand and set up some shields around them, causing the large group of people, to fly backwards a few feet. They looked at Dumbledore, a small scowl on their face, but they understood and stayed back.
"Wow, wasn't expecting that" A voice said
Harry turned to see James Badger and Ginny Weasley walking towards them. Harry smiled and gave the two of them a hug, happy to see his friends again. Shortly after Harry started living at Hogwarts, Dumbledore had Harry meet James, and his sister Aila, and Ginny, along with the Fred and George, Astoria Greengrass, Neville Longbottom, Michael Corner, Blaise Zabini and Susan Bones. They spent so much time together; they were practically family.
"I'm happy to see you again" Harry smiled "Where's everyone else?"
"The twins are at Zonkos, to cheer Ron up, because he's not happy that he's not going to Hogwarts until next year" Ginny rolled her eyes, at her younger brother's behaviour "Neville isn't coming to Hogsmeade until tomorrow and I'm not sure where Michael is…"
"Aila is with Astoria, Blaise and Susan are doing their own shopping" James continued "Me and Ginny were waiting for you, so we can shop together"
Dumbledore smiled, watching the trio talk as they started heading to the bookstore, to start shopping for their school supplies. He was happy to see he made the right choices when finding other Magical children for Harry to make friends with. Shortly after getting their books and writing essentials, the trio entered the wand store, where the smell of wood and other unrecognisable scents hit their noses.
"Mr Ollivander" Dumbledore called "There's students waiting for you"
At that moment, Ollivander appeared, behind the shelves that were piled high with wand boxes that were various shades of browns, blacks and greys. He looked at the trio before smiling.
"Mr Badger, Miss Weasley and…Mr Potter, a pleasant surprise" He said, before looking up at Dumbledore "good to see you Dumbledore, I trust that wand I gave you is working well?"
"It is Ollivander" Dumbledore smiled, before gesturing to the trio "Now it's their turn"
"Of course" Ollivander smiled, removing a black box from behind his desk "I think it's only fair that we start with Mr Badger…like every other member of the Badger family, this wand is unique and custom made to you, as I'm sure you know Mr Badger…11 ¾ inches, made from Ebony Wood, with a Thestral Tail Hair Core…perfect for all kinds of combative magic and transfiguration and is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves…may it serve you well Mr Badger"
Ollivander handed the wand to James. It was a single piece of wood, jet black in colour, square shaped, the jagged and rough edges giving it a hand cut look, with runes symbolising strength, power and protection carved into the handle. James took the wand and felt the magic flow through him. Ollivander must have felt it too, as he smiled, before turning to Ginny.
"Another Weasley" he smiled "I find it difficult sometimes to pair wands with your family, I remember the twins being particularly difficult, but let's see what we could find"
Ollivander spent a few minutes taking Ginny's measurements and looking for a suitable wand. After a few unsuccessful attempts, Ollivander thought for a moment, before taking a brown box and pulling out a wand. Like James' it was jet black in colour but was more elegant and smoother. The handle was twisty, with small engravings and a studded piece between the handle and shaft, allowing a sturdier grip.
"12 inches, made from Yew wood, with a Dragon Heartstring core" Ollivander said, examining it "A rare wand indeed, has quite the fierce reputation in duelling and curse, and often performs the most flamboyant of spells"
Ollivander handed Ginny the wand and as soon as her fingers wrapping around the handle, sparks flew out the end, and the lights shined brighter for a few seconds, as the magic flowed through her. Ollivander smiled at another perfect match, before turning to Harry.
"Hmm, I have a feeling you will be the trickiest of all Mr Potter" He said "But I'm sure we can find the right wand for you"
Harry wasn't sure how long he had been here for. It must have been about fifteen minutes. Maybe longer. Ollivander must have handed him dozens upon dozens of wands and each one was unsuccessful. One of the wands given, 11 ½ inches made from Holly with a phoenix feather core, burst into flames, turning to ash, as soon as he grabbed it. After a moment, Ollivander thought deeply, before going into the very back of his store, returning a few minutes later with a black box. When Ollivander removed the wand from the box, Dumbledore's eyes widened when he saw which wand it was.
"Let's try this" Ollivander said "15 inches in length, made from Elder wood, with a Thestral Tail Hair Core…the rarest of all and trickiest to match, it contains powerful magic that only a powerful wizard, or a wizard who has the potential to become so, can wield such a wand"
Ollivander handed the wand to Harry. When Harry's fingers wrapped around the wood of the wand, the entire building began to shake, and Harry seemed to glow. James and Ginny looked shocked and confused as to what was happening, whereas Ollivander and Dumbledore merely smiled.
"Incredible" Ollivander beamed "that is a powerful wand, Mr Potter, for the wand to answer to you, I expect great things from you"
Dumbledore was surprised at what he saw. But it was a happy surprise. He knew which wand that was. The Elder Wand. Dumbledore remembered when he duelled Grindelwald and won the wand off of his old friend. When Dumbledore held the wand in his hands, he didn't feel the same feeling his own wand had given him. Despite winning the Elder Wand, it didn't answer to him. Knowing the wands history, Dumbledore gave it to Ollivander for safe keeping and got himself a new wand, as the core in his had burnt itself out. Now, Harry was the new owner of the Elder Wand. With such a wand in his possession, Dumbledore could see Harry as the future leader of the light. Dumbledore would just have to make sure that Voldemort never learns about the wand.
…
And done. What did you guys think?
Originally, this chapter was going to be longer, ending after the main characters had been sorted into their Houses, but I decided to cut it here, as I need to take a little bit more time to think of where I'm going to sort Harry. I'm thinking either Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff, but I'm unsure at the moment. Leave your reasons for why it should be one or the other.
As you can see, I'm definitely doing new things in this story. The idea has been brewing for a while. As we have an ongoing story where Harry will become a Dark Lord, [Osiris Rising], I wanted to do a story that is the complete opposite. Like my story, Raised as a Black, there will be flashbacks sprinkled through the story, showing Harry growing up in the castle, just because it makes the pacing better for the story.
You probably saw Nymphadora Tonks mentioned in this chapter. Yes, she will appear in future chapters, though what kind of affect she will have on the story, and what kind of relationship she'll have with Harry, is currently up in the air. Then we have the Elder Wand. I remember reading a few stories, can't remember the names, where Harry matched with the Elder Wand at Ollivander's. It felt like it fit with the story, so I included it here.
That is all for now, I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you next time.
