Chapter One: The Beginning
If there was one thing consistent in Dean's life it was his brother Sammy. The six-year-old always had the giggling bundle of joy to cheer him up when his days were dark. Most of the time Sam was smiling, gabbling, crawling around the disgusting hotel floor or he would be crying. But no matter what when they moved into another town, or when Dad left them with uncle Bobby, or they'd be alone for a day Dean always had Sam to look after and distract himself with.
He'd fully learned how to clean and change diapers by the age of 5, figured out ways to stop Sam from crying, and by the age of 6 little Dean had done more of what a father did then their own dad John.
Dean didn't really care that John let him handle Sammy, it was fun getting to pretend he was his own baby to take care of. He just cared that said baby was happy and healthy.
It was like any other day when everything changed.
15 years later. . .
"Samuel!"
Sam looked up from the little notebook in his lap, "Yes Father?" he questioned softly. He'd learned more then once not to sound to confident when talking to his father.
His father didn't smile, "Why aren't you out training with the others?" he asked with his arms tied behind his back.
Sam bit his tongue until he felt blood pool out, "Uh, I hurt my leg badly yesterday and Meg said I could sit today's practice out if I went over my sigils" he rushed out, standing up and holding in the wince at how badly his leg did hurt.
Azazel let out a humf and walked around the room inspecting it. "You know I hate when my soldiers are lazy. I don't want to see you miss another practice, you're already weak enough as it is" he reminded
Sam nodded, swallowing some of the blood in his mouth as he continued to bite on his tongue. "Yes, Father, it won't happen again" he assured.
"Very well," Azazel replied, "Oh, and Lily needs some practice. Her powers have been getting out of hand lately and she needs an outlet" he explained.
Sam shivered just imaging her icy hands touching his skin, god he hated Lily and her powers. "O-Okay" he stammered.
"Don't stutter. It shows weakness, and what do we do with the weak?" he asked.
"Kill them" Sam finished without a beat.
Azazel nodded satisfied before leaving the room, leaving Sam a unraveling mess behind him. It was no use to try and defy Azazel, it didn't matter how badly Lily and the other's powers hurt him. His parents hadn't begun to develops and so he was the guinea pig for the others, the normal ones.
But still he hated it when Lily touched him, when he could feel his heart slowly stopping. She always stopped just seconds before he kicked the bucket, but never the less those few minutes weren't pleasant.
Meg and Andy were the only decent people out of his messed up family, well meg was a demon but still. She'd sometimes sneak him chocolate bars at night when he'd had a horrible day. And Andy, well all he did was be a friend but that was hard to come by so it was nice. Sam wished he and Andy shared a room instead of Jake. Jake was a classic bully, and Sam was the easiest to pick on.
Not only didn't he have no powers which rendered him useless but he also hadn't hit his growth spurt, and he for the life of him couldn't keep on any weight so he was a easy target.
But Sam wasn't all useless, or he liked to think he wasn't. He was an A student in all his normal human classes, at least when he was taught the information. He liked facts and equations, easy things that always had answers.
"Hey shrimp, how's the gimp leg" Jake said walking into their room, his knuckles were all bloody and he had a couple of cuts on his face but overall it looked like he'd won against whoever he was pitted against.
"Still hurts" Sam said back not sure what else to say.
Jake let out a little laugh while he bandaged his hands. "You're gonna have to start pulling your weight before Father decides you're not worth keeping around. You know that's how it works here. You keep being useless and we won't have a reason to keep you" he reminded.
"I know" Sam replied, opening up his notebook and going back to the previous page.
Jake walked toward him and grabbed the book out of his hands before skimming through it. "This isn't anything we've been taught. What is this?" he asked.
Sam stayed quiet, knowing he'd rather get beat up then say what the markings on the page were.
"Answer me, dumbass" Jake said again.
"Just some new stuff from the books Meg got me" Sam whispered under his breath.
Jake slapped him across the back of the head and then headed back to his bed and fixed up his hands, keeping the book with him. "You're such a weirdo, researching all this shit. Not like you'd even have the powers to use any of this. God, I don't know why Dad keeps you here with us. It's like you're some alien or something, why don't you have powers anyway?" he asked.
Sam shrugged, rubbing the back of his head "I don't know ask him" he replied instantly regretting it.
Jake's head snapped up at him immediately, shocked. "You're lucky I know Lily's taking it out on you later otherwise you'd have a black eye by now" he warned.
"I'm sorry, really, I didn't mean it" Sam apologized profusely. "I know I shouldn't even be here, I'm practically human. Trust me I feel just as stupid being here as you do" he assured.
Jake didn't say anything, or maybe he toned Sam out until, "You should get going, don't ever keep Lily waiting" he warned.
