A/N The title refers to Edward being the only K2. This story's about him knowing he's the only one left, no more siblings.

One evening, as Edward was heading to his shed, someone said, "Edward, there's none of your siblings remaining. You're the last of your kind.".

Edward's iron heart broke at this knowledge and he gave a sad whistle. He began to cry in his shed, sobbing softly and sniffling, his eyes wet with great tears. His driver did what he could to comfort his dreadfully sad engine.

"There, there", Edward's driver said, holding a cloth to the old engine's weeping eyes. "Just let the tears out."

Edward said nothing, too sad to do anything but let it all out. He wept non-stop until he could cry no more, falling asleep. His driver then left. As the little old tender engine slept, he had a dream of The Big Railway In The Sky in which he saw his siblings riding its golden rails.

In Edward's dream, he heard a voice say, "I'm the one in charge here and any engine, if they believe in the place and live a good life can ride the golden railway after their life's over."

Edward said, "I believe if I ever need to be scrapped, I shall join you." to his siblings. Then he woke up from his dream. He thought, Even if I'm sad, I've got to put it aside enough to be a Really Useful Engine. I can give myself time to be sad when I'm not doing my jobs.

Edward said he could do his jobs on his branch line, though he was sad. He didn't want to burden his friends with his work, as he put it. His driver, when it was time for a break, left his engine on a siding to rest.

While Edward was resting sadly on the siding, Thomas came and noticed.

"Why so sad?" Thomas asked his friend. "If you need to cry, go ahead. I don't mind. Just let those tears out and feel better."

Edward said in a sad voice, "All my siblings were scrapped years ago. I'm the only K2 left. He then began to cry, big tears wetting his face.

Thomas, giving his friend a sympathetic look as he pressed his buffers against the older engine's, said, "I know how you feel. I lost all my siblings, too. Just cry your heart out. I did, when I found out about them. As someone who can understand your feelings to a point at least, I'm willing to be your buffers to cry on. You shall feel better. Remember, you may have lost your siblings, but you've got your friends. I remember that and that's how I can still be happy."

Edward sniffled and let out small sobs, unable to speak anymore from his sorrow and heartbreak taking over. His eyes were shut from his tears. I don't share my sadness with just anyone, he thought. But my friendship with Thomas means I can trust him and share my sadness with him.

Edward's driver returned from his break and Thomas had to move on. It was just time for the tank engine to get ready for his next train. The old engine's driver climbed onto his engine's running board and dried his teary eyes with a cloth.

"I see you had a friend to comfort you in my absence," Edward's driver said to his engine. "You've got the right to cry. There, there. It's okay to shed tears in this situation."

Edward said nothing and allowed his driver to keep drying his eyes. As his driver wiped the last tears away, Edward thought, My little friend was right. I do feel better. And should I feel sad about my siblings later, I'll cry as much as I need to. When there's no one I don't want to see my sadness with me, at least. Like if I'm in my shed and only my crew are with me.

In the days that followed, Edward's pain got less and less. until one day, he was sad only if he thought about his siblings, whether through memories bubbling up because of something he or someone else said or did. His driver and his engine friends he could trust enough helped him through his grief.

A/N I think "crew are" would be proper in British English. I'm not British, Thomas and his friends are, so I try to write in their English except when I feel more comfortable with my country's terminology. My FanFiction buddy told me how sad she thought Edward would be.
