Tina Goldstein, known and recognized auror of MACUSA, felt extremely alone.

Her younger sister, Queenie, had deserted their shared apartment a year earlier. When Tina learned that her sister had reconnected with Jacob, she warned her of the trouble she might be in with the law, but Queenie didn't care. After days of tension, the two sisters finally had a fight like never before when Queenie invited Jacob to Tina's birthday party and they didn't get a chance to talk to each other again before Queenie joined the ranks of Grindelwald.

Sitting on the floor and leaning against the foot of an armchair, Tina sighed and looked around her. Papers were scattered all over the floor. She was trying to figure it out, to understand Grindelwald's plans, but everything was getting confused in her mind. She couldn't stop to think of a way to bring her sister back to her. The young auror closed her eyes for a few moments while massaging her temples before looking at the old clock hanging on the wall. It was too late to have another coffee. Tina stood up, picking up the empty cup next to her and carrying it over to the small sink. It was then that a small knock was heard against the window, she turned her head towards it and saw an owl waiting with a letter in its beak, which she hastened to recover. Queeny ? No. But the disappointment was short-lived when she recognized Newt's thin handwriting.

My dear Tina,

I hope my letter finds you in good health.

I am sorry not to come in person, I hope you will forgive me but I have estimated that this letter will arrive for August 19. If it arrives before, wait until that day before reading the rest. If it comes later, you will know what to do.

Tina, I wanted to wish you a happy birthday ! I would have liked to be there to wish you in person but as you know, I have to go back and forth a lot between London and Hogwarts to accompany Dumbledore and I don't know where I will be today. I will send you a gift in the following days, I really wanted it and I hope you will like it.

Have a great day,

I think about you,

Newt

Tina smiled, she always looked forward to Newt's letters. And on a day like today, it was the happiest moment of her day.

Too bad for the late hour, Tina took out her quill and a sheet of paper to answer the young man immediately and settled down at her small desk.

Dear Newt,

I can't thank you enough for thinking of me today. I miss Queenie, even more today, and you have brightened my day. A gift ? Newt, you know it's not necessary, don't go to the trouble. You know

She didn't have time to finish her sentence when few knocks were heard again, this time at the door. Tina looked at the clock, quarter to midnight. No sane person would knock on someone at this hour. The young woman put down her quill, careful not to stain her letter with ink, and grabbed her wand before slowly approaching the door. She carefully put her hand on the doorknob, sighed, and jerked the door open a few inches.

- "Newt ?!" the auror gasped.

- "Good evening Tina", the young man smiled, "I hope it is not too late to visit you".

Tina took a few seconds to realize the situation. Newt was standing there on her doorstep, his suitcase in his hand.

- "No, of course not", she finally said, stepping away from the door to let him in. "You know, you are always welcome".

Tina closed the door behind him.

- "I just received your letter, I thought that..."

- "I was sorry for missing your birthday", Newt cut her off, "I took a portkey".

- "Illegally ?" the young woman asked, raising an eyebrow.

- "Perhaps", the magizoologist replied, scratching the back of his neck.

Tina chuckled.

- "Never mind, it's nice to see you again", she said smiling.

- "To me too. "

A few seconds passed where the two friends didn't let go of the gaze. It was Newt who broke the silence.

- "Oh, I brought your present", he announced, putting his suitcase on the floor before opening it and taking something out.

Newt turned to Tina and handed her what he had in his hands.

- "It is a thund... "

- "A thunderbird feather", Tina cut him off with a big smile on her lips.

- "I found it when I decided to tidy up Franck's enclosure and I immediately thought of... Uh... Of you. I hope you like it.

- "Of course", the young woman replied, admiring her present from every angle.

Tina rushed to Newt with the intention of hugging him but changed her mind at the last moment.

- "Could I take you in my arms ?" she asked shyly.

Newt was surprised at her request but nodded by opening his arms and the young woman slipped into them.

- "Thank you Newt", she said behind the young man's neck, "you can't imagine how much your presence makes me happy".

After a few moments without moving, the magizoologist felt a start in the young woman followed by a sniffle. He pulled her away from him slightly to see her face and noticed the auror's red eyes.

- "Oh Tina, I am sorry, did I do something wrong ?" he wondered.

- "No Newt, of course not," she replied, wiping her eyes with one hand, while the other was still wedged behind Newt's back, along with the feather. "It's that... It's the first time that I spend my birthday without Queenie and... And until you arrived, I felt terribly alone."

Newt brought the young woman back in his arms, sliding his hands over her back in an attempt to console her.

- "She will come back, I'm sure Tina."

After another sniffle, Tina pulled away from Newt and wiped the last tears from her face.

- "Thank you Newt, really, thank you from the bottom of my heart. And... And thank you for my gift, I love it", she said, holding up the thunderbird feather in front of her.

After a last smile, Tina jumped.

- "Oh, I'm sorry, I miss all my homework !" Tina yelled. "Do you want something to drink or eat ?"

- "No thank you Tina, I have to leave soon. I have barely... 20 minutes left before the portkey delivered me in London", he continued, looking at his pocket watch.

- "Oh", Tina answered, disappointed. "I was hoping you would stay longer."

The young woman turns to the living room table to put down her feather. The real reason was mostly that she wanted to hide her new tears from Newt.

- "Tina, I'm sorry, really."

- "I know, the crime doesn't wait", she replied, turning to him, trying to put a smile on her lips.

- "I... I want to make you a promise..." he hesitated. "I'll be back, on each of your birthdays, Tina."

- "Don't make promises you can't keep, Newt."

Tina crossed her arms over her chest.

- "I will try", the young man continued, shrugging his shoulders.

The remark made the young woman smile.

- "Tina, I also wanted to tell you, focus on Queenie. "

- "Sorry ? " Tina asked, surprised.

- "I mean, Dumbledore is following Grindelwald closely, you do not have to dwell on it. I will give you all the information I have and which could be useful to you. Instead, fight to get Queenie to come back to you."

- "But how ?"

- "Change the laws of this country !" Newt announced, surprised whereas the answer seemed obvious to him.

Tina looked confused for a few moments.

- "Sure ! But..."

She slapped her forehead with the palm of her hand.

- "But, of course ! I was so obsessed with Grindelwald that I didn't think about it. Newt, you are a genius, thank you ! Tomorrow I return to MACUSA and I'll work hard so that wizards and no-majs can freely be together !"

- "I know you can do it", Newt said smiling. "I'm sorry Tina but I have to go", the young man continued while recovering his suitcase.

- "Of course, I'm not holding you back. Come back whenever you want, you'll always be welcome."

The two friends smiled at each other one last time and Newt headed for the exit. As he had his hand on the doorknob, he froze and spun around.

- "There is a promise I can keep," he announced, looking down at his feet.

Without another word, he walked over to Tina, put his free hand on the young woman's cheek and gently placed his lips on hers. Surprised at first, Tina quickly responded to the young man's kiss. After a few seconds that seemed like an eternity to them, Newt and Tina slowly moved away from each other, then the young man left for good, taking one last look at his friend.

Tina remained motionless for a few moments, a smile frozen on her lips. The young man had just made her the most beautiful of promises. A silent promise that reminded her that she would never be alone again. He will be there for her, anytime, anywhere. Always.
