I woke up groggy, with lots of irritating beeping around me. Irritating beeping and murmured voices.
I forced my eyes open so see all of my friends, Grandpa and Dad hovering between two beds, I turned my head to see Yugi sitting up in a hospital bed. Yugi was in hospital!
I realised I was lying down. I was in hospital? The fire… I looked down at my hands, I'd shot water and –
"Mana!" Dad said rushing to myside, everyone followed suit.
"Thank goodness your awake," Grandpa fussed, soothing my head.
"I'm fine, how's Yugi? Why isn't Tristan and Joey –"
"We've been checked out, just rest will yah!" Joey said, before further protests could leave my mouth.
"I'll got get you kids some food," Dad said. He kissed my forehead, then made his way over to Yugi.
"So what happened, you guys are all ok. The Pharaoh, is he –?"
"Yep, the puzzle is safe and sound." Yugi said smiling at me.
"Oh and by the way, so are you, Yug," Joey added.
"Yeah, how can I ever thank you guys for saving me back there. You put yourselves in danger to make sure I'd be ok. You're the greatest friends a guy could have."
"That's what buds, are for right pal." Joey
"Yeah, it's a good thing I spotted him," Tristan said.
"And what about me, thanks to my brilliant idea we were able to pray the puzzle of the wall."
"Yeah brilliant, lets stick a pole into the whole, then we'll pull on it really hard." Tristan mocked.
I laughed, before coughing.
"It's fine, it's just the smoke," I said as anxious faces rushed closer. "When do we get out?"
"The Doctor said tonight as long as the test come back ok," Téa said. "It was so scary, seeing Tristan carrying you."
"Sorry, but I didn't have my staff. Doing magic without help is hard. I'm still really new."
"Well if there is a new enemy than I think you should start carrying it around with you Mana," Grandpa said in concern.
The doctor took another few hours before they let us leave. I could smell the smoke on our clothes as we put them back on. As soon as we got back to the games shop, I told Yug to get changed and shoved our clothes into the wash. When Yugi had finished in the shower, I popped into the shower, and with a turban on my head I made my way back into our room. Yugi smiled, he then glanced at the puzzle on the comforter, I could tell they were having a conversation. I wished that I could hear them, then my brain clicked.
"Hang on I have an idea." I said grinning.
"What is it?"
"I was looking at a spell, and I think it will work."
"What is it?"
"Give me a piece of the puzzle, and I can put my soul in that piece. Which means I will be able to see either one of you when you are in the spirit form beside whoever is solid at the time. I can hear and see you just like the other one can. Well, then you talk to each other. It won't be as strong, you can think communicate with each other right?"
Yugi nodded.
"Yeah, I won't be able to hear that, but talking sure."
"I think it's an awesome idea," Yugi said his eyes lightening up. "What do you think?" he said turning his head beside him.
"He thinks it will be good too," Yugi said.
"Great," I said, "hand me a piece of the puzzle."
"Ah how do you get it out?" Yugi said looking at it.
"Allow me,"
It fell out.
I closed my eyes and focused on the spell.
"Whoa,"
I opened my eyes as Yugi's exclaim to see the puzzle was glowing, it dimed as I put the piece back into the puzzle. I could see the Prince on the bed.
I leaned against the wall.
"We should talk about what happened today." I said looking between the two.
"Yeah," Yugi said concerned. "It seems like whoever is after the puzzle will do anything to get it. Or to make sure that nobody else does, when he smashed it to pieces he almost destroyed it or good. We barely made it out of that mess alive. And I know this is just the beginning, we're in more danger now than ever."
"Yes Yugi," the Prince said, one leg horizontal over the other. "But, now you've resembled the puzzle and our bond is back we can face him together."
"But, we have no idea who this guy is, we don't even know what he looks like."
The Prince's arms were leaning on his crossed leg, his brow frowned slightly in concentration.
"Well," I said. "He knows a lot about the puzzle from what you told us, and he has the rod, because he could control Keith. So we are looking for someone who has a lot of knowledge about the magic."
"Yeah, I guess you're right. Thanks Mana," Yugi said.
"Speaking of magic have you had many more dreams?" he looked at me, his eyes looked almost desperate beside his stoic face.
"A few," I said nervously.
"Argh, I feel like a total loser," Yugi suddenly burst out making us both turn to him. "I almost lost you and the puzzle forever in that fire, there's no way I can face this enemy. What if I mess up again." He said angrily.
"You didn't fail," The Pharaoh said calmly.
"Only because Mana and the rest of my friends came and saved me. Otherwise I would have never of escaped." He said. The Prince stood up.
"Your wrong Yugi, you need to believe in yourself, like I believe in you. In all my years I have never encountered a soul as brave as yours, Yugi. There is a reason fate handed you the puzzle and brought us together. You have the heart of a true champion and a soul that is courageous and true in another time you could have been Pharaoh."
He then moved beside me his arms crossed leaning against the wall with a leg bent.
"Yug, we've got this ok, it has been written for centuries that we got this." I said pulling him into a hug. "Come on we have to make the chariot tomorrow, we are going to need our energy."
Three weeks passed and the dreams got younger again, to my relief. I began to share with Yugi and the Prince again, though I tried to avoid some of his questions. My trail period was over, and I was now getting $15 per night and 80% of my tips. Studying for exams was going well, and the Chariot was almost complete.
It wasn't till a month after the fire, I dragged myself out of bed throwing on yoga pants and a jumper. Though I was tried from the night before I was regaining a lot of memories.
I headed towards the hall with Yugi, saying goodbye to Grandpa and Dad as we left. We were the last ones there, I smiled.
"Hey guys," Téa said smiling as she saw us enter.
"Hey!" Yugi grinned running towards the group.
"Let's put all of it together today before we finish paining," I said looking at the vague memories I had. "Maybe the Pharaoh should help, he's stronger," I said mostly teasing.
I could see the figure smirk beside Yugi, he turned to my brother, I guessed they were communicating silently, then they changed.
"Bring it on Mana," he said his voice amused.
After a couple of hours, we decided to eat and take a break, the chariot needed to be attacked to the wheels, but was almost ready for the competition. I smiled stepping inside and touching the frame.
"Remembering anything?" a deep voice said coming closer. I turned around to see he had stepped onto the chariot, I could feel his body heat.
His grip on my waist tightens as his hand cups the nape of my neck. I put my arms around his neck. Our bodies so close. He moves us to the rail, the bottom of my back pressed against it.
"Fine, I just need," I went to scurry away, my face turning beetroot; but he caught my arms.
I could feel warm muscular arms around my waist, and I was leaning into their owner.
"Have I done something to upset you?" he asked in concern.
"What? No!" I said still flustered as the dream was rushing through my brain.
"You've been more distant, since before the fire."
Our lips passionately crashing against each other…
My face burned further, I look down at my feet like a coward.
"It's nothing, sorry if you think –"
"Please confide in me Mana, tell me what is troubling you." He said touching my arms.
"Ok, but not here," I said, wanting to get away from the chariot. He let go off me and I scuttled off into the hallway. We stayed silent for a while, his face watching mine. I avoided looking at him.
"Mana," he said, a slightly commanding hint in his tone.
"So, I've been having older dreams," I mumbled.
"Older, when I am Pharaoh?" he said.
"Not quite that old, but… we know each other better in these dreams if you get my…" I trailed off not looking at him.
"We know each other?" he said, trying to catch my eye, but I stare at the floor.
"You know, Yugi help me out," I said hoping my brother could hear me.
"Yugi is still in his soul room. I can get him if –"
"Were a couple in the dreams," I blurred at him, his expression was shocked. I blushed and looked down again.
"Sorry," I mumbled. "It's just hard to talk about, cause, well cause you don't remember. It feels like I have it, like I've stolen it from you."
"Mana, it's alright. I understand it must be strange. Both getting the memory and knowing that I do not know about our time together in Egypt. I am sorry it has caused you trouble." He said, I look up at his face.
"I'm sorry I should have been more open about the situation."
"No, I understand why it was difficult for you." He said warmly. "Perhaps we should rejoin the group. However, know you can talk to me about anything Mana,"
I smile, and nod. Silently we walk back into the hall to help with the chariot
"Hey I just thought of something?" I said as we finished attaching the second wheel.
"What is it Mana,"
"The Prince and I's bodies are lying in a tomb in sarcophagus, mummified." I said.
"In Egypt, in the valley of the kings."
"No we are not in the valley of the kings, we are pre the 1st dynasty the 1st dynasty is recorded 22 years after we died. We are deep underground guarded by the Ishtars' right under the pyramids, see they were built before the Pharaoh's that use them as tombs. They inscribed their names on them as making them appear to be made for the purpose of being those Pharaoh's tombs."
"Now that's a weird concept," Yugi said. "The mummy's and the changing historical accuracy by taking the pyramids as coffins. You'll have to tell Mr Bradley so they can do some digging.
"Creepy," Téa said.
"It'll be mummified and decayed too," Tristan said looking green.
"Don't say that," I said feeling sick slightly knowing what Egyptians did with the bodies before mummification.
"What?"
"I remember the mummification process," I said, trying to ignore the flashback I was having. That could be one thing I don't have to remember.
