I was perched on the fountain. Egypt's glowing sun radiating warmth on our skin. The Prince smiles jumping up with me.
"Having fun?" he said amused.
"I'm hiding. Seto is looking for me."
"What did you do to provoke Seto's fury?"
"I don't know,"
He raised his eyebrow at me.
"Seriously, I have no idea."
He chuckled.
"Well then, perhaps it is a reward of some kind." He laughed at my disbelieving expression.
"Mana!" I heard the voice I was hiding from. I cowered making the Prince laugh again. I turn around to see the tall man walking towards the fountain.
"Oh hey, I was just going to –"
"Come with me," he said, spinning and turning back towards the palace. Great, I thought before jumping off the fountain and following him.
I was a lot colder when I woke up. I curled tighter into a ball, missing the Egyptian sun on my skin.
"Mana are you awake?" I heard Yugi's voice.
"Yeah, I had another Egypt dream if you to want to come in."
Yugi and a sprit Pharaoh walked round the curtain.
"I was getting taken to talk to Seto." I said looking at the Pharaoh. "You asked me what I did to provoke his fury,"
The spirit laughed.
"What else happened?" Yugi asked.
"Uh. We were just hanging out by the fountain in the centre of the palace. It's very relaxing." I smiled closing my eyes picturing the clear water. When I opened them again I noticed the Pharaoh's face.
"Sorry, this must be hard."
"I do not wish for you to feel guilty, Mana. I am glad you are regaining your memories."
"I wish you were getting them to my Prince." I covered my mouth as I realised what I said.
"I guess your old speech is coming back to you too," Yugi said with a smile.
"Shut up, Yug," I said getting out of the bed. "Right, I'm going to get ready, we have to get to school on time."
We met up with the rest of the group at the gate when I saw Mr Bradley's face. His eyes flickering between me, the puzzle, Yugi, and then back again.
When he reached us he spoke quickly.
"Can I speak with you two please. In my classroom before school starts." Then he strode away.
"What'd you reckon that was about?" Joey said.
"I have an idea, we better go, Yugi," I said.
"It didn't take us long to get to the classroom. Mr Bradley was passing twiddling his thumbs. When he saw us he stopped, and gestured for us to sit down.
I kept my composure, as I sat down I spoke.
"So you've worked out who I am, and about the puzzle," I said trying to keep my voice cool and calm. His eyes widened for a second, he wasn't expecting me to be blunt. He probably was thinking that he was crazy. "How'd you figure it out."
"I went to the museum, was allowed a special tour, I saw the Tablet of the Prophecy… You the Pharaoh and Seto are on it. I couldn't get him to come –"
"He doesn't believe it yet," I said. "How did you convince yourself you weren't crazy?" I smirked. He gave me a weak smile.
"It that explains why you were shouting out answers uncontrollably, how your projects are superior to everyone else's…" he paused and turned to Yugi. "Can he – I mean the Pharaoh – can the Pharaoh hear…" he trailed off.
I laughed I couldn't help it, bless him, he was so stunned.
"Yes, you can speak to him if you like," Yugi said nervously. Mr Bradley nodded eagerly, I watched as my brother changed into the Pharaoh.
"Pharaoh," Mr Bradley said putting his left foot forward.
"That will not be necessary," the Prince said smiling at him. "Hello Mana,"
"Hello Pharaoh,"
"So you're… you're really her."
"Yep, though I can't remember very much,"
"The Prophecy," he said quietly. "The bit we read in class, it –"
"Came as a bit of a shock yeah," I finished for him smiling.
"How much can you remember? I am jogging memories aren't I?"
"Yes,"
"It said that only happens once you re-entered the –"
"Shadow Realm. Yep, been there, done that; flashback central has been boarded." I said, he sat down talking a large gulp of water.
"It takes some getting used to,"
"Tell me about the first Shadow Game I was in this life I was dark Magician girl, long story," I said as he looked at me.
"She was your soul monster," he said.
"Soul monster?" Pharaoh asked.
"The monster that represented your soul which is what the items tested." I blurted covering my mouth again.
"That is so irritating." I groaned, the ancient king chuckled at me I glared at him.
"Go and help Joey and Tristan with the chariot go on." I said smirking.
"So you are using the actual techniques used in those times."
"Yep, oh and the pyramids were not tombs they were landmarks they just took the credit for them later on." I said pouting.
"Was the Sphinx – "
"Yep, I can't bear to look at it now. It was beautifully painted and obviously not withered, it was Aknamkanon's father who built it.
"Did it still have its nose," he asked curiously.
"In the memories, I have so far, yes." I said feeling that I would have some memories when it was destroyed but my mind wasn't ready to share that secret with me, maybe I would have to see it myself to find out.
He rubbed his face, he hadn't shaved. I imagine the stubble scratched his face.
"I will not say anything to anyone, and if I can be any help." He said after several minutes if silence.
"That would be great thanks." I said.
"I am thankful, that you will keep our secret," the Pharaoh said, I smiled at him.
"Would you like me to give you extra notes?" he asked.
"Thanks, that'll really help. I am enjoying these dreams, but they aren't enough." I wrapped my arms around myself, grabbing my bag and wrapping my scarf around me.
"Mana?" The Pharaoh said in concern.
"With each one I've been feeling the cold more, I didn't realise until this morning. It's fine, I just have to wear warmer clothes." I reassured.
"You are reacclimatising to Ancient Egypt?"
"Looks like it," I sigh, keeping my arms around myself.
"You have my class first I think, perhaps you should just settle into your seats while I write up todays lesson," Mr Bradley said, beginning to busy himself with the board. The Pharaoh became my brother again, and we prepared for some more flashbacks…
"Thank you everyone enjoy the rest of your night." I said giving a slight bow to my mostly happy audience, as I jumped down from the stage ten dollar tip guy came over.
"That was wonderful, here you are dear," he said smiling. "Thank you for playing my daughters favourite song."
"It was no problem, I'm glad I could honour her that way," I smiled, I felt so bad for this man. The way he lost his whole family in a crash.
"I hope you don't think I was too personal last week –"
"I am glad you shared your story with me, even if it was not a happy one. I am glad that I am helping you."
"I am keeping you up," he said. "Go on dear, I know you have the bus to catch."
"Thank you, and I will see you next week." I gave him another smile, before I disappeared out of the back. We did the maths on my tips, so I could give the bar some. Tucking the rest of the money into my shoes. I gave my boss a wave good bye, took off my make up in the bathroom and made my way out to the bus.
"Mana?"
"Téa!" I said turning around to see my friend.
"Hey, aren't you meant to be at swimming?"
"Yeah, I just was really hungry and was craving some of their ginger ice-cream." I said gesturing to the restaurant.
"Oh ok, you want company on the bus?"
"Sure," I smiled, she looked like she believed me, and Téa wasn't someone who was very good at hiding her concern. We chatted on the bus, I hoped I was acting normal. I said goodbye and got off at my own stop, making my way back home and to sleep.
Hot, everything was hot. Heat on my skin. Red and amber everywhere, black but no pretty lights. Screaming. Not fun screaming this was scary screaming.
"Mommy!" I cried out searching in the crowd for a familiar face. "Mommy! Daddy!" I cried, I was too scared to move. More screaming more black.
My tummy pushed my lungs up making a funny sound. I couldn't stop it. I couldn't breathe.
"Mommy!" I cried again. I ran towards the main street. Horses were whining, people running and screaming.
I hid behind where the men hold fruit and fish at people. I look over the top to try and find Mommy or Daddy.
I heard a scream as the world around me was dark. In contrast to the bright red flames I could not see a thing.
"Mana? Mana, are you ok?" I heard Yugi's voice. My breathes were heavy as my heart thumped in my chest.
"I – I dreamt. I was in a fire. It was a memory. And. I."
The bed dipped and a warm hand touched my leg. I shivered, wrapping a blanket around me.
"Hey, it's ok your safe."
"There was a fire in my village, it's before the palace. I lost my parents – it's probably how I ended up with the Pharaoh."
"That would make sense. What happened exactly."
"Well, I was screaming for my mum and dad… no one shouted back."
"I'm sorry, Mana," Yugi said pulling me into a hug.
I felt my eyes burn, and my body began to shake.
