Info – one-shot, Zelloyd: post game after taking the Kratos path in the game.

The Watcher

It was cold, quiet, and peaceful. Really, though, it shouldn't have been. The fact that it was a grave didn't matter. This was the final resting-place of one Zelos Aries Wilder. Nothing about that plot of land should have been ordinary.

The grass growing over the ground was the same as everyone else's. In this, the Chosen seemed to have finally received his wish; he was no longer special. He was just like the rest of the dead: buried and, eventually, forgotten.

"Things weren't supposed to turn out this way," the watcher said, sitting down next to the tombstone companionably. "You were such a fool; that's why you aren't here now. Lloyd loved you… he'd have done anything for you. Why did you let fear and jealousy get in your way?"

Nervously, the watcher ran his fingers through his long hair and repeated, "you were such a fool.

"You loved Lloyd, too. Everyone who meets him loves him; why couldn't you understand he was oblivious to all of that? Why couldn't you…?

"What about Seles? You've left her alone. Sure, she wanted to be Chosen, but… she's always crying now. Seles loved you, her brother, and you abandoned her. What have you to say to that? You loved her too; you said what you did was for her. I believed that, but now… now I'm not so sure what was done was right… and I regret…"

"Zelos?"

The watcher looked up abruptly, startled by Sheena's voice. He stood and hurried out of her way. She glanced in his direction, but didn't acknowledge him. Walking purposefully, she knelt in front of the grave and placed a bouquet of flowers before the tombstone.

"Zelos, I'm sorry. I wish you were here so that you could see my children; so that you could be that horrible influence and awesome uncle to them…" she let out a long, shuddering sigh. "My son's name, though not his true name, is Zelos. I felt it appropriate that you should continue on that way. Something of you should always be around lest those of us who remain forget to smile.

"Lloyd isn't improving. I've never seen someone dying of broken heart before, but I'm fairly certain that, as the years pass, is what is happening to him. His fire is gone; I find it hard not to blame you."

"One moment of selfishness shouldn't have caused so much pain," the watcher whispered. "Such a fool…"

"I have to get back to Orochi… and my twins. Farewell, Zelos."

"Goodbye Sheena," the watcher winced as, once more, he was ignored… or unheard, unseen. Flicking translucent red hair over less than substantial shoulders, Zelos looked down at his own grave and whispered once more, "such a fool. I regret what I've done.

"It's too late for 'I'm sorry,' isn't it?"

A/N Well… I wrote this a while back, when I should have been working on the third part of "Caught". This is what I get for taking the Kratos path again. Zelos withdrawal. Now I've gone and depressed myself...

Reviews might cheer me up, though.
