Chapter 4 - Be Careful

"...watch closely, this is how greatness happens." Vince Russo said to Kendra as they watched Austin give his King Of The Ring speech on the monitor in his office. Kendra rolled her eyes.

"I don't understand why I'm here Vince, after all this whole thing was your 'bright idea'" Kendra said sarcastically putting bright idea in air quotes.

"Kendra, sweetheart..."

"Don't call me that"

"Okay, Kendra. Listen, I know you're pissed but you have to understand that I'm doing this for your own good. You're very young both in age and in this business. It's way too early to make that jump from intern to writer you've been here what? A month"

"I didn't ask to make any jump, just don't steal my ideas and pass them off as yours. That's just low" Kendra spat bitterly. Russo laughed.

"Oh really, low?"

"Yes. Very low" She said crossing her hands over her chest as he kept on laughing. Soon enough he stopped and his face got serious. "You know what's low girl, talking to your boss like that. And I'll let it slide this once but if it repeats itself you're not gonna be so lucky" He said in a low tone.

"What's that supposed to mean?" She asked with furrowed brows. Any attempt he made to intimidate her was pointless and she knew he knew that as well.

"What it means is that your career is in my hands. I could make you and I sure as hell can break you so don't try me. I can say one word right now and that's it. You're done for not just here but in this country as a whole. So you got that? Princess?" He asked with a grin.

"You're a sick bastard" She said storming out of the room. What she wasn't expecting was to bump into The Undertaker of all people. She swallowed hard.

She was mostly cool with him and they have had two or three conversations in the past but unlike Vince Asshole, she was very scared of Undertaker. I mean why won't she be? His famous no-nonsense attitude, his grandeur and his more than impressive 6''10 height as opposed to her 5''6 frame. Not to mention he was the locker room and rumor had it that Mr. McMahon was scared of him as well. All in all, he was an intimidating man to come face to face with.

"I'm sorry...uh Taker. I..." She stammered, something she usually did because of fear.

"Cat got your tongue?" He asked to which she shook her head no. "Well that's good. And no worries, you're cool I don't mind you bumping into me, Kendra"

"Thanks. So I'll be on my way" She said walking away before being called back by the most surprising thing which stopped her in her tracks.

"Good job with the Austin storyline by the way. You'll make a good writer one day"

"How did you...?"

"I know all" He said letting a dark silence loom as Kendra let out a shiver.

"Why is it so cold all of a sudden?" She said to no one in particular.

"Plus, I heard everything. What an asshole by the way. Want me to give him some whooping?"

"Would I? But you could lose your job and I wouldn't wanna be responsible for that" Kendra said but deep down she knew that'll never happen. The laugh Undertaker gave later confirmed that theory.

"Right, me lose my job. How funny. He'll get what's coming to him soon enough. But in the meantime. We should talk more often" He said with a smile as he stepped into Vince Russo's office.

"Well that was a dramatic eight minutes, I wonder what will happen next?" Kendra thought to herself. She waited for at least twenty seconds but nothing out of the ordinary happened or extremely dramatic happened.

"Here comes the Perfect referee everyone. Show some respect, it's all part of the perfect life. All hail Mr. Perfect!" Curt said wearing a referee uniform with a large stereo placed on his shoulders playing his theme song as everyone backstage looked at him like he had grown two heads.

So, like she said. Nothing really out of the ordinary happened.

"So, I really hate to admit this but you look really handsome there Curt. You clean up nicely as a referee" She said brushing a few loose strands of hair from his face. "There we go"

"Thanks sweetheart, I knew deep down that you dig the Perfect one" Curt said with a wink as Kendra pretended to barf. "Yeah, barf all you want. You dig me Kends"

"In your dreams, Perfect one."

"Well, till then. I did a good job elevating your mood didn't I? Some may even say I did a perf..." Kendra cut him off with laughter.

"Can you go one minute without saying the word perfect? Learn more adjectives Curt"

"Yeah I obviously can. That's how perfect I am" He said with his usual arrogant smirk pasted on his face. Kendra held her head and groaned as he gave a chuckle. "That was the perfect annoyance"

"I'm done with you Hennig. I'm going. Go do your referee job or whatever" She said getting playfully fed up with him.

"Well technically, I will be a special outside enforcer. You have to use the perfect term" He said with a grin. This time Kendra kept a blank expression on her face. "Okay, I'll just make Shawn and Davey laugh in the ring instead. There's no problem" Curt said.

Unbeknownst to Curt, Kendra's heartbeat increased rapidly at the mention of Shawn's name. She let out a sigh. The last time she made any type of contact with him was at his house the previous week when... Sunny showed up. She winced remembering the awkwardness of the whole situation. She knew she had found out something she really wasn't meant to know and that kinda scared her.

Shawn and Sunny were at the very top of the company and with a snap of their fingers she could be gone. Well, Shawn seemed a bit nice to do so but what about Sunny? Thinking about what she could do made her feel a bit scared for the safety of her job.

"...Earth to Kendra. Hello. Kendra. Yeah it's me" Curt said trying to snap her out of her trance like state. She quickly got out of it with a few blinks as she suddenly became aware of her surroundings again. "Where were you Kends?"

"Uhhh, I..." She was cutoff by a stagehand coming over to tell Curt that it was time for the match to which Curt nodded and followed said stagehand. But not without saying...

"We'll talk about this later" Curt said. Kendra nodded as she watched him walk away not knowing she was also being watched as well at that very moment.

"Okay I've gone through some spots and I'll say..." Davey Boy Smith aka. The British Bulldog rambled on to Shawn and his wife Diana. His rambling fell on deaf ears as Shawn, the person he was talking to was lost in his own world staring at the interaction between Undertaker and Kendra and smiled ever so slightly when he saw her frightened expression while talking to the Undertaker. He knew Mark was a huge teddy bear when it came to women so Kendra was in good hands.

But on the flip side, he and Mark had issues of their own which revolved around in Mark's words 'Shawn's jackassry' He surely deserved it though. He was the epitome of jackassry. Anywho his eyes flickered back to Kendra as she looked calmer when talking to Mark this time around. His mind couldn't help but go back to the week before as he mentally winced at what went down at his house. Though he still believed it could've gone a whole lot worse if not for Hunter.

Flashback

"I asked you again Shawn. What the fuck is she doing here?" Sunny asked smoke literally coming out of her ears. Kendra was lost for words and so was Shawn.

"She's with me" Triple H said coming out of literally nowhere and wrapping his arms around her waist. "Her car got stuck on the road and I insisted that we stopped and gave her a ride. Shawn was a little hesitant as he didn't want anyone around to think otherwise but I persisted." Hunter said lying smoothly.

"Yeah, that's true" Shawn said his eyes focused on Triple H's arm around Kendra's waist.

"Oh" Sunny said with a laugh as everyone else sighed a breath of relief. "My bad. I'm sorry dear it's just, uh... Shawn and I are really close and..."

"It's fine. I get it." Kendra said with a forced smile. "I'll just head to the hotel now if you guys don't mind. Wouldn't wanna get in the way" The last thing she wanted right now was to be on the bad side of anyone. Especially Sunny who was at the top of the company and could easily mar her career at the snap of a finger.

"Oh that's good. You should." Sunny said faking a grin. Even if she was 'with' Hunter, she didn't like to see any girl around Shawn for too long. "I'm Sunny by the way"

"Kendra. Um, I'll go call a taxi"

"Oh don't worry, I'll drop you off" Triple H said rubbing her back. She gave a small smile at him as they went back upstairs to get her things.

"They'll look nice together" Sunny said throwing her arms over Shawn's shoulder.

"Yeah, the poor thing is probably still spooked out after what you pulled" Shawn said with a frown. "A real classless thing to do Sunny"

"I was angry okay. I was angry you didn't call and I was worried. Forgive me Shawn?" Sunny said making a pouty face. Shawn was unfazed.

"Not today Sunny. You need to go. Go back to Chris. We'll sort this out later" Shawn said as Sunny got an evil gleam in her eye. "I mean it"

"But Chris went out to the gym and he probably won't be back for three hours at the least. You know how much he loves working out. I'll be so lonely. Do you want me to be lonely Shawn?" She said with puppy dog eyes as she started kissing his neck. It took all of Shawn's inner resistance not succumb to her charms but he stood his ground.

"I mean it Sunny. I'm not in the mood. Sunny!"

"I will get you back into the mood Shawn" Sunny whispered as she went lower to his chest and began taking his shirt off.

"Sunny!" Shawn yelled noticing the figures in the doorway.

"Whoa" Triple H said while Kendra's mouth was wide open. "Sorry, we didn't mean to interrupt anything or..."

"Kendra I can explain" Shawn said with a horrified look on his face.

"I get it. MY lips are sealed. I was never here. Let's get outta here Hunter" Kendra said to Hunter as they scurried off.

"Dammit" Shawn cursed as he ran his a hand through his hair.

"She better not be a blabber" Sunny said.

End Of Flashback

Shawn groaned at the thought of that memory. Damn Sunny. She had set him at least three weeks back with the act she pulled off. It looked like Shawn replaced the oil filter in Kendra's rental with a rusty one for no reason. All that time...

His mind went back to what Davey was saying once he saw Curt Hennig and usual craziness walking up to Kendra.

"So, that's exactly what I think Shawn, any additions?" Davey asked. 'Had he really been talking this whole time?' Shawn asked himself.

"Uhh, sure. Actually I need to go get some water but after that I'll make some additions" Davey nodded. Shawn took one last glance at Kendra who was laughing at something Curt had said before walking away from the scene.

Kendra picked her food as the rest of her family chatted on about only God knows what. Her sister Diana and her husband who was Davey Boy Smith had invited Owen, Bret and herself for dinner and quite frankly she didn't even wanna be there. Not that she had anything against Diana or Davey no, it was quite the opposite. She adored Diana and vice versa and she could tolerate Davey on most occasions. But as you might have assumed the reason for her discomfort was her so called brother Bret.

Besides the fact that Owen had explained the whole situation to Bret and that it was all a misunderstanding on Bret's part, he never apologized to her. Hell, he hadn't even said any word to her since that day. Kendra knowing her brother knew he was still convinced that she'd slept with Shawn.

What an idiot.

"...Kendra, anyone home?!" Diana said snapping Kendra out of her thoughts.

"Yes. Yes. Sorry. I... I just got lost for a second" Kendra said which made Diana raise an eyebrow with a worried expression on her face.

"Are you sure? You've been quite out of it for a while now. Is everything alright?"

"Yeah, I'm fine" She said with a small smile.

"Oh you know Diana, I think she's just tired. After all she does so much work backstage compared to the rest of us, don't you think Davey?" Bret said laughing along with Davey as Kendra gave him a look that could kill.

"How mature boys" Diana said slapping Davey upside the head.

"Yeah, apologize to her you idiots" Owen said.

"No Owen, it's fine it's fine. And they're right. After all, I work harder than the rest of them which must explain why they haven't been able to convince Vince to make them world champions this year. I guess he prefers younger, more handsome people, with a better in-ring skills" Kendra shot directly at Bret with the last one as she knew, in fact they all knew that he didn't appreciate anyone comparing his wrestling skills to anyone especially not Shawn. His smile was long gone and replace with a glare. Kendra smirked at him.

The tension was so thick, you could cut it. And that's exactly what Davey attempted to do.

"Good one Kendra" Davey said with a laugh.

"Thank you dearest brother in law." Kendra said taking a glass of water. Bret still remained stone faced.

"Oh lighten up Bret, you know better than to throw shots at your sister. She will throw one back at you, harder. I learnt the hard way" Diana said as everyone on the table laughed, including Bret.

"It's all in good fun" Davey said.

"Yeah, I guess it is" Bret said. Kendra didn't fail to notice the glare he sent her way and rolled her eyes. Bret will always be Bret.

"Speaking of Shawn, I noticed something today..." She paused as everyone looked over to her. She remained silent with a smirk on her face.

"Well, are you gonna talk?" Owen Hart.

"Yeah, you don't just start saying something and stop midway honey" Davey added.

"Oh yes she will, if it's about Shawn it should end right there and then" Bret said as Diana gave out a laugh.

"Oh but this is good news, from my perspective anyways." Diana said the smirk still plastered on her face.

"Well, talk" Kendra said.

"That's what I've been saying." Owen said.

"Davey honey, remember when we were talking to Shawn before the match?" Diana asked.

"Yeah, when we went through the spots. Guy couldn't really remember most of them during the match though, we had to improvise mostly" Davey said.

"It was a hell of a match though" Kendra commented genuinely.

"I agree. Shawn's a jackass but he does know how to put on a good match" Bret said. Everyone looked at him weirdly. "What?"

"That's the nicest thing I've ever heard you say about Michaels, honestly I'm scared" Owen said.

"Me too" Kendra added as everyone laughed.

"Anyways, back to what I was saying. Davey didn't you seem to notice that Shawn wasn't really paying attention to you?" Diana asked.

"Nope, though that could explain alot. But I seriously didn't notice anything" Kendra shook her head. Davey had his airhead moments.

"You never really do when you're talking about wrestling. Well, I did. His eyes were focused on something else, or should I say someone" Diana said wiggling her eyebrows at Kendra who slightly blushed though she looked confused. "He was staring at you dumbass. I think he's into you"

"Uh..." Kendra started before being cut off.

"So, why isn't Jim here tonight?" Owen said seemingly out of the blue. Kendra looked over to him and mouthed a 'thank you'. Owen nodded and continued talking. "In the fifteen years I've known him, that man has never once skipped dinner" That made everyone else laugh so hard that Diana soon forgot what she was fussing about and the main topic shifted to Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart.

But even with all that, deep down Kendra knew shit was brewing and it was bound to go down...

"Well, that was what you call a meal." Davey said patting his stomach. "I'll need to workout extra hard tomorrow to burn all that down"

"I could help you with that, just give me three hours and you won't need that workout tomorrow after all" Diana said giving him a kiss.

"Eww, can you please not say that in front of me sis?" Owen said disgusted.

"Oh my God, now I can't get that image outta my head" Kendra said rubbing her temples.

"Oh hush children." Diana said as she and Davey shared a laugh. "We should all be on our way though, it's getting late"

"That's right, tomorrow's another busy day and it's almost midnight" Bret said taking a look at his watch.

"Well, you all go on. I'll meet up with you guys. I need to visit the ladies room"

"Alright Kends, take care of yourself" Diana said as the rest of them walked out of the restaurant. Kendra made her way to the ladies room which was surprisingly empty but understandable as it was late at night.

She was in the middle of washing her hands when she heard the door open. She assumed it was one of her fellow ladies and didn't give much thought to it. But as she turned around, you guessed it, her oh so wonderful brother Bret Hart stood at the door frame, leaning on it.

"Wow, so you're transgender now or what?" She joked. He gave out a slight chuckle.

"I'm sorry for calling you a slut and for insinuating that you slept with Shawn. I obviously know you better than that and I know you wouldn't do such" Bret said calmly. Kendra was shocked. Yes, she wanted Bret to apologize but this was scary. Who was this and what had they done with her brother.

"Uh, thanks." She said drying off her hands and grabbing her purse.

"However..." Bret started as he moved closer to her. "...I'm not through with you"

"W...what do you mean?" She stammered which was a sign of fear. She didn't like where this was going.

"You know exactly what I mean" Bret said finally getting to the point where their faces were inches apart. "I saw you blushing earlier. You thinking about Shawn?" He whispered.

"Uh..."

"That was a rhetorical question sweetheart" Bret said.

"Actually it didn't seem like..."

"I'm not done talking." He said his tone raised a bit which made her shut up. She noticed how dark his eyes were and how much they were filled with anger though he seemed calm. "Now listen to me just this once because if I ever have to repeat myself again, you're gonna suffer and I'd really hate to see that happen" He said brushing some hair out of her face. The little contact made her flinch adding to the the already existing fright that pulsed within her.

"Bret, please..." She pleaded slightly above a whisper but surely, he cut her off.

"Stay away from Shawn Michaels. I don't want you talking to him, I don't want you looking at him and hell, I don't even want you thinking about him. And trust me, I'll know" He said his hands trailing along her face stopping at her cheek. She shivered. "I'd really hate to do something I'd regret. If you catch my drift" His hand traced a line along her right cheek which made her gasp. There was a faded scar in that exact line he traced which could only be seen when a person got really close to her. "Remember who you're dealing with Kendra." He said finally stepping away from her.

She let out a breath she didn't even realize she was holding as she watched him walk away.

"Oh and by the way, you better hurry up in here. I told Owen that I'll be the one driving you home so I'm giving you five minutes" Bret said before finally stepping out of bathroom. Tears formed in Kendra's eyes as she slid to the floor and buried her head between her knees.

"Why me?" She thought to herself as the tears and memories came rolling in.
