It was three in the afternoon that Dr. Paylor found himself reading over the report Soma had given him from the day before. Pouring over the contents again still left him perplexed and worried. The Aragami had targeted the young woman, seeing her as a much bigger threat. One had managed to hit her and instead of having large lacerations across her body she had been sent flying several yards away, with nothing more than a broken arm.
The fact she survived indicated her odd nature well enough, but it was what she did afterwards that worried him. Soma had decided to carry her because she was unfit to move, but then he dropped her to the ground as he described the searing pain he felt coming from his arms. Soma had described the pain like that to when he is being overwhelmed by the Oracle Cells within his body. The fact that he felt much weaker after those burns meant that whomever the young woman was, she could absorb the Aragami cells. It could explain the strange mist Soma had described, though he himself was too unsure if what he saw could have been his imagination from everything that had been going on.
Placing the tablet upon the table, he rubbed the bridge of his nose before adjusting his glasses. He took a breath before continuing his speculation on the strange woman that had been brought in.
After Soma had returned with her, he had decided to earn her trust by escorting the young woman by himself to give her a feeling of safety. It was clear from her eyes how intelligent she was, and yet there was the feeling someone normally gets when staring at a predator judging if another animal was worth making a meal out of. Dr. Paylor hoped it was the thing he had been searching for, but instead it was something else entirely. She was clearly human, yet there was something about her that made him feel on edge. It had been one of the reasons he had dismissed the men that had gone with him to see whomever Soma had been bringing in. Normally they would have remained but after he nodded to them to reassure them that nothing bad would occur, he ended up taking this mysterious person to a safe location.
Dr. Paylor did make sure that his friend Johannes did not learn about what he was doing. To ensure nothing got to him, he kept much of the information on the mission classified and made sure Soma would write two separate reports so one could be given to him, and the other ended up being the officially scrubbed version. Still, when he walked through Fenrir, escorting her to one of the rooms located within his office, he noticed how she was constantly lost in thought. She would bump into him clearly suffering from fatigue, but her body seemed capable of moving even though she was clearly tired. When he looked more closely, he noticed that her body was covered by a lot of dust and her clothes looked to be torn. That was not the strangest thing though, as there appeared to be scars layered across her body that were pink and fading but still pronounced upon her arms.
Even though he managed to take her to his office where he had two bedrooms for someone to rest, the strangest thing ended up being the weapon she carried. She refused to let it leave her side, and after she entered her room he saw how she dropped it before going to the bed and immediately going into a deep slumber. The thud that had followed indicated how heavy it truly was.
After pouring over all the information given and what he had observed, Dr. Paylor realized he needed a break from all of this contemplating. If he continued thinking over where she might be from or who she could be, then he would not be able to get anywhere. Even after he poured over a third of Fenrir's files looking for a possible physical match, he was more likely to find nothing. At this point he would need to ask her who she might be. While at first he did assume she may have been a god eater, her abilities did not match and thus he had been left with only theories that tended to lead him nowhere. With time as limited as it was these days, he needed to focus on what he could do instead of what he could not.
Standing from his desk, he stretched his back realizing how stiff it had gotten. It was a reminder how old he was. Even though he must appear young to the people around him, he was already getting old in age. His nickname while a bit scathing did always lift his spirits at times. Getting back on track, he looked towards the room where the young woman slept, contemplating over what he should do. The first thought that came to mind would be how hungry she might be. Running around alone would mean she didn't have anything to eat and if she had not eaten for so long, then something light and easy to digest would be best. The next thing she might want is to be clean. A new set of clothes would help as well, which means he would need to ask for Tsubaki to help him once again.
Food is something he can easily acquire on his own, and seeing as to the fact he did not eat anything past breakfast, it would be a good excuse to bring food for the person sleeping in the room to the left of his office. Now came the need to ask Tsubaki if she could find clothes that would fit the young woman. Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves from all the thinking he had done that day, he put his hand to the earpiece that linked to Tsubaki's line.
It took a few minutes before she picked up.
"I apologize for the late reply, Dr. Sakaki. Director Johannes had requested me to tell him if Soma had found anything interesting during his mission. Is this about the person you wanted to be brought in?" Tsubaki responded in a hushed tone so no one could hear her.
Dr. Paylor lowered his voice before responding, "The person brought in is a young woman who is in need of a new set of clothes. I require you to find clothes suitable for her after I escort her to the showers. I need you to be discreet about this."
"Understood, I will bring the items required to measure her once you have sent me the signal. I will send the technicians to work on some faulty equipment in the rec room once everything is ready."
"Thank you Tsubaki. The signal phrase is going to be, 'It's a great day for rain,"
After being given confirmation, Dr. Paylor left towards the mess hall, making sure to avoid any off duty personnel whenever given the chance. Once he had arrived, he found it empty. Looking towards a clock on the wall indicated it was three in the afternoon. He had missed two meals. Dr. Paylor walked towards the kitchen to see who might be inside. The kitchen staff seemed to be busy cleaning the dishes from lunch.
Dr. Paylor asked one of the staff if he could have some help locating oatmeal and other ingredients for a light meal. After explaining that he did not have a large appetite that day. After being asked to clean up after he was done, the staff left to take a break before they had to begin preparing dinner. It took around a half hour to cook the meal properly, alongside another ten to clean the pot and spoon.
Dr. Paylor walked back to his office with two medium sized bowls of oats sitting on a tray alongside two cups filled with water towards his office. He hoped that Johannes would not find anything suspicious about what he was doing that day. Being cooped up in his office was normal but skipping meals usually meant he was doing something secretive, which he knew his old friend might realize so, hopefully the excuse of not having much of an appetite that day would suffice.
Once he had made it inside, he set the tray down upon his desk before walking towards the door where the young woman resided. Right when he was about to knock he heard the sound of metal clanging to the ground. Then he heard the young woman let out a small yelp of surprise.
Author's Notes:
Sorry for the late update. I was trying to figure out how to write this chapter and I still hate it but this is the best I could do. I wanna make it longer but then I will take more time and I want at least one more chapter out this year.
Also thank you for being patient with me, since I have bouts of laziness, and I did delete this loads of times. I will try to release chapter five between December of this year to January. Wish me luck. Warm regards - Quin
