Chapter 29 - Recipe For Disaster

"...anyways, I made a huge discovery and I don't know how you guys are gonna take this."

"Whatever it is we'll handle it together. We're a family aren't we?" Kendra asked.

"Well alright then. This is about Davey" Owen said. The Harts were quiet for a while before Kendra decided to speak up.

"Well, what happened? Let's hear the deets" Kendra said. Bret remained quiet but looked curious as to what Owen was trying to tell them. "It better not be what I'm thinking" Kendra said narrowing her eyes at Owen. Bret shot her a look.

"What are you thinking?" Bret asked. She ignored him and kept her attention focused on Owen. "Kendra" Bret called out in a warning tone which Owen picked up on.

"Easy Bret and Kendra I think I have to say this whole story from the beginning." Owen said. Kendra furrowed her brows.

"Is it that bad?" She asked. "If it is I'm killing that motherfucker!" She yelled though she knew she wouldn't be able to do much and judging from the look Bret gave her.

"It's bad" Owen confessed with a sigh.

"What's exactly going on?" Bret asked as he narrowed his eyes at both of them. "You honestly lost me at you making a huge discovery Owen" Bret said.

"I know, and I'll explain. Remember yesterday when we went to that diner?" Owen asked. Bret noticed Kendra wince once Owen said the word 'yesterday' and felt a pang of guilt rush through him. "Well, the reason I was there in the first place was because Kendra was suspecting Davey of cheating on Diana with Sunny and I 'accidentally' read some of their text messages about meeting up that day so I decided to trail them both and get to the bottom of the mystery" Owen explained.

"Wow. Good work Sherlock Holmes." Bret said though sounding sarcastic, was impressed. "So what's the story?"

Flashback, The Night Before (a part of Chapter 25)

"Oh come on bro, aren't you the least bit curious?" Owen asked. Bret gave him a stone-faced look which made the younger man roll his eyes. "Alright. I guess I can easily do this alone" Owen decided. Plus, Bret was a bit of a liability in this plan because of his anger issues.

"That's the spirit bro! Goodluck with whatever the hell it is you're doing. I'm gonna join Neidhart at the bar. Don't miss me too much" Bret said. Owen gave him a blank look. "Wow. That didn't hurt me in the slightest. See you later" Bret said as he headed out of the diner. He still wondered what possessed him to join Owen with whatever he was up to.

Seeing that his brother and brother in-law had left the premises, Owen shook his head in disappointed. Okay granted, he was a hundred percent sure that they would have stayed put if he actually told them what they were there for from the get go. Granted.

But where's the fun in that really?

still with the newspaper conveniently kept up to conceal his identity, he noticed Sunny enter the diner about ten minutes after the departure of Bret. And ten minutes later, Davey followed suit sitting at the same table which Sunny sat. Three tables away from Owen, who conveniently and discreetly moved over to a booth closer to where Sunny sat once she came in. With that, Owen got to work, eavesdropping.

"How are you Smith? You look horrible by the way" Sunny commented. Davey huffed.

"Thanks for the compliment." He said with an eyeroll. "I guess I'm just stressed out" He said. Sunny gave him a once over.

"I can see that. How's Diana and the kids?" Sunny asked. Davey sighed.

"I'm fucking up big time. But I'm still trying my best. I opened up to her about my... problem" Davey said. That made Owen's ears perk up. What problem? He hoped it wasn't what he was thinking.

"How did she react?" Sunny asked.

"I don't think she knew how to react. We both thought I was done with all this but recently I've just been in a lot of pain. I'm stressed out, I can't concentrate on anything, I know I'm being distant and... yet she still loves me." Davey sighed. "I'm a terrible person"

"Yeah you are" She affirmed making him chuckle a little.

"Coming from you. Or need I remind you of what happened with..." Sunny cringed.

"Yeah that... I feel awful" Sunny said her smile drooping a bit. "But less about me, let's talk about you. How are you gonna get through this?" Sunny asked. Davey shrugged.

"I dunno how to stop Sunny. Diana's giving me a lot of re-affirmation though and she said she loves me no matter what and we'll get through this together" Davey said. Sunny smiled. "Yeah I know, I got a good one there"

"That family is really good" Sunny said. "I'll advice you to call Diana more, then maybe you should also take some off from the federation. It's no good if you're in pain all the ti,e. Take some time off, go spend time with your family, get some rest and if all else fails... go to rehab" Sunny advised.

"Same thing Diana said." Davey said with a sigh. "Did you bring them?" Davey asked. Sunny gave him a reluctant look but nodded.

"They're all here. The extra strong ones. Are you sure you still want them?" Sunny asked, crossing her fingers and hoping that he'd say no. She didn't wanna be the reason for this man's further slide downhill. But he was in such pain so she kept on supplying him more pills.

"You know what? No. I'll carry my broken, battered, bruised body back to my hotel room, give McMahon a call and ask for a few weeks off. I've been doing this nonstop for almost two decades. I need a break" Sunny smiled. "Getting through this night would be tough though.. everything hurts"

"I get it. But you're strong. You're the British bulldog and you can get through this." Sunny affired. Davey sighed.

"I wish I had enough faith in myself like you guys do but I'll try" He said with a groan as he pushed himself up. "Well this was nice, see you when I see you. But I'll keep in touch to let you know how it's all going" Davey said.

"Sure. And say hi to Diana and the kids for me when you get back to Canada"

"Of course and you, well goodluck with all the Chris stuff. Maybe you just shouldn't date. You thought of that?" Davey said attacking her on what she did.

"I know. It sucks and I have no justification for that. I'm a horrible person" She said with a sigh.

"In that sense yeah, but don't worry, you''ll find your footing one day. You just need to set your head right" Davey said. She nodded.

"I'll try my best" Sunny said. Davey nodded as he exited the premises.

End of Flashback

"Wow." Bret said not sure of what else to say. Kendra on the other hand just sat in silence.

"Are you alright sis?" Owen asked going over to sit down next to her.

"I feel so sorry for Davey, getting over an addiction is never easy. I just hope he gets through it and I'll try to give him some moral support when we go to Canada" Kendra said.

"And it's good he stayed loyal to Diana. Else he would not have made it to Canada" Bret said balling up his fist. "But he didn't and that's cool"

"Is your mind at rest now Kends?" Owen asked.

"Yeah I'm fine. Hell I'm relieved. This whole thing really stressed me out. I didn't wanna imagine that my sister's marriage would break up so bad. I'm glad at least Davey knows he's wrong and is trying his best to fix it. That's a step in the right direction" Kendra commented.

"You said it sis..." Owen cut himself off mid sentence when he released that something in Kendra's right arm looked off. "...hey, what's that?" He asked pointing to her upper arm. She looked down and her eyes widened. Her arm had swelled up a bit and it while it wasn't noticeable to Owen when he sat far away from her, it became noticeable to him when he got closer.

"Um... it must be an allergic reaction to..."

"Kendra, do me a favor and fold still" Owen asked. Kendra really wanted to protest but she had one good arm anyways so there wasn't much she could do physically to even stop him so she agreed... reluctantly. She nodded. With that, Owen slowly pulled up her sleeve until he got to where the swelling was and his eyes nearly fell out of his socket.

"What gives Kendra? Who did this to you?!" Owen asked anger suddenly seething through him. "Bret come take a look" Owen called out. Bret came closer and even his eyes widened. He didn't expect to cause that. She had a big red swelling on her arm which looked painful as fuck.

"No one did. I told you I had an allergic reaction!' She assured.

"Don't give me that crap Kendra, I can literally see a palm print there. Please talk to me. Is anyone hurting you?" Owen asked.

"Why would you even think that?" Kendra asked in a whisper though in her head, but she knew that was as a dumb question as anyone without a brain could have drawn patterns from her eye to her sprained elbow to her swollen arm. "See it's nothing. And besides I have to meet the McMahon's soon." She said looking at the time on her phone.

"Kendra..." Owen said softly. "...this conversation isn't over"

"I know but trust me, it's just an allergic reaction. I'll be fine in a few days. Goodnight, love you" She said giving him a hug, or as much as she could hug him with both arms being injured to an extent. "Bye Bret" She said coolly as she exited Owen's locker room.

"Fuck!" Owen swore as he kicked the chair and started pacing.

"Easy brother, calm down" Bret said.

"How can you say that?! Bret someone's hurting our sister!" Owen said.

"We don't know that for sure"

"How the hell can you say that? I hesitated with the black eye and even the broken arm seemed off..."

"Sprained elbow" Bret corrected. Owen rolled his eyes.

"That's besides my point. Someone's hurting her Bret. And I doubt she'll talk. Remember how she didn't even tell us about Elijah being..."

"Don't remind me, please" Bret said cringing at that memory. He wanted nothing to do with Elijah or all that happened that period. He just needed to get it out of his head. He had to.

"Sorry but..."

"She's fine. That's all there is to it!" Bret snapped before storming out of Owen's locker room.

"Was it something I said?" Owen asked himself.

Meanwhile, Bret once outside, picked up his pace in an attempt to catch up with his sister. It didn't take too long as he found her in the parking lot hunched over her rental.

That was strange. But nonetheless, he went over to her.

"Kendra" He called out and immediately she jumped in fear.

"Stay back Bret. Please. Don't hurt me" She cried. "Please. I didn't show Owen anything on purpose, you were there with me!" She said as the tears flowed freely down her face. That was what got Bret's attention.

She was crying.

"Relax Kendra, I didn't come to hurt you" He said. "Please wipe away the tears." Bret said. He noticed she was also shaking. She was really scared of him.

And he knew this, yet he kept hurting her. What the fuck was wrong with him?

"Bret please" She begged as she cleaned her tears off. "Owen knows this isn't a coincidence"

"I know." He said. "Aren't you supposed to be with Shane and Vince right now?"

"I told Shane I wasn't feeling well and I'd probably get air sick." She said.

"You're his PA now, you've gotta travel with him"

"Yeah but... no. I'm not good, mentally" Kendra said. "I'll just drive"

"You wanna drive all the way from Philadelphia to Providence at night? Alone? Quite frankly you shouldn't be driving at all" Bret said motioning to her arms. She cast him a look.

"Oh if only there was someone I could blame" She said sarcastically.

"Don't start" He warned. She didn't say another word. "Sorry, force of habit. The point is I'll drive you to Providence. Owen can go with Jim and Brian" Bret said. Alarm bells rang inside Kendra's head.

"Bret, that's a recipe for disaster (roll the credits)" Kendra said.

"No, it's the least I can do." Bret said.

"I don't feel safe alone with you Bret" She whispered.

"I know. I'll be back in a few minutes" He said walking out of the parking lot. Kendra stomped one foot on the ground in frustration. What the hell did he want with her? Hadn't he done enough already?

Agitated enough, she decided to ring up someone she could trust. Shawn. She knew trust was a big word to use this early but everything that had happened this past couple of weeks, especially after opening up to him she could say that she trusted Shawn.

She called him twice but unfortunately he didn't pick up. Dammit.

She guessed she was disturbing him anyways, he had his own life and wouldn't always be at her beck and call whenever she needed him. Sigh.

Hey Kendy, I'm at a club with the guys so I can't pick your call. What's up - Shawn. Huh. The fact that he was at a club unsettled her a bit for some reason but she decided to brush it off.

Sorry if I'm bothering you but Bret messed up my other arm and it's kinda swollen. Owen noticed and now for some reason Bret wants to drive me to Providence - Kendra. That was a long waited a few minutes but got no reply. At that moment Bret appeared with his luggage and put it in the trunk. Suddenly her phone vibrated.

You could never bother me - Shawn.

She smiled.

And please tell me you're not going with him. - Shawn.

He won't take no for an answer and I don't wanna argue more. - Kendra.

"Hey, get in the car okay. What are you still doing on your phone?" Bret asked.

"Yeah, I'll get in" She said as she got into the car. "God have mercy on me this night"

"What do you mean by that?" Bret asked. She shook her head no and surprisingly enough, Bret didn't push it and got to driving. "So... how are you?"

"We're not gonna get through whatever this is by awkward small talk Bret"

"I'm just trying to talk to you" He said. She rolled her eyes.

"Right just like how you 'talked' to me in that Shawn situation or Billy or Shane, you just love talking to me and hearing me out don't ya?" She shot. "And I'm fine"

"Kendra deep down you know I'm sorry" Bret said.

"Deeper down I know that's a lie." She shot back. "Can we drive in quiet please? It's bad enough you're here" She said. She noticed him clench his fist on the steering wheel and rolled her eyes. "And there it is, you wanna shut me up right? Do it"

"Kendra I'm trying my best not to..."

"Not to what? You're trying your best not to do what Bret?" She egged on. She knew something was coming and while she didn't want to get hurt, she wanted to prove a point. It was complicated.

"Don't make me..."

"Do it, I dare you. C'mon, do it. Hit me"

"I'm not gonna"

"Hit me Bret, c'mon"

"Kendra for the last time..."

"C'mon what are you so afraid of? You've never hesitated before. Be a man. Be a man and prove you can physically assault me freely because I'm not as strong as you. I hope it makes you feel more like that pathetic excuse of a man that you are"

"For the love of God, shut up!" He yelled. "This silly guilt trip is not gonna work and you know it. I just wanna drive you safely to Providence that's all. I'm not gonna lay a finger on you because I only act out when you go against my rules so for the love of God just shut the fuck up before you give me a reason to do anything!"

"Well, well, here you are proving my point" She said sarcastically. "This is gonna be a long ride"

Meanwhile, in Minnesota...

"...and checkmate. There you go Amy, once again I've proven to you and to the world that I am indeed, absolutely perfect" Curt bragged on to his fourteen year old daughter Amy who in turn groaned. "Oh come on sweetie, you'll do better next time"

"You said that six years ago when you taught me how to play chess!" She said.

"And well what do you know? Six years later and you're incredibly good. Try playing against other people and you'll beat them with no trouble. But play against me, I'll win obviously as I am, absolutely perfect" he assured. "But that's for another day." He said. "Up for a game of Scrabble?" He asked. She nodded but yawned midway. "Awwn someone's tired"

"Never! Okay maybe a little..." Amy said. Curt smiled.

"Go get some sleep, we'll play some more tomorrow okay" He assured. Amy pouted but ultimately nodded.

"Goodnight Dad" She said giving him a small hug.

"Goodnight Ames" He said. She got up, left the living room and made her way to her room. Curt smiled as he watched her go. The divorce didn't affect the way he related with his kids and he sure as hell was proud of it. Him and Leonice remained good friends and could still co-parent effectively. And he spent most of his time at their house rather than at his and tonight was no different.

Seeing that everyone else had slept off, he put on the TV and decided to watch some wrestling, playbacks on WCW Nitro. A bit of a betrayal to Vince but he knew Vince would understand.

The nWo were out in the ring doing a promo when his phone rang. Pausing the replay, he picked up his phone to see none other than...

"Owen. What's up? Did anything happen to Kendra?" Curt asked instinctively. After all, Kendra was the only possible reason Owen would suddenly call him out of the blue wasn't it?

"I'm doing very well, thank you" Owen replied sarcastically. Curt laughed, same old Owen Hart.

"Sorry but why else would you call me at this hour if it wasn't relating to Kendra? We both know I have a point" Curt could have sworn Owen was rolling his eyes on the other side, which he was by the way.

"Yes you do. And something did happen to her. Throughout the past week did she tell you she walked into a door, tripped and fell and/or had an allergic reaction of some sorts?" Owen asked. Curt was confused.

"Uh... no. All we talked about this week was the Vince Russo thing. Is there something I should know?" Curt asked.

"There are a lot of things you should know. First off she got a black eye last week, secondly she broke her arm yesterday and came with a cast to work today, then this evening, her arm swelled up" Owen said. Curt raised an eyebrow. This was news to him certainly.

"Well, she didn't tell anything about tripping, walking into a door and all that and I'm guessing it's because she didn't want me to worry. But in the space of a week, how does someone get three separate glaring injuries?"

"Exactly my question! Thank you! It makes no sense. I think someone's hurting her but she just doesn't wanna say anything" Owen theorized.

"Whoa, you don't think she has a secret boyfriend of some sorts who's hurting her again? I mean Elijah was..."

"Nah, at least we knew about Elijah we just didn't know he was like... that." Owen gritted his teeth at the thought of Elijah. "And while I wanna believe it, I don't think Vince Russo did any of it."

"Well whether he did it or not, I hope she's alright and I hope your theory isn't true. I know it's quite coincidental that she got hurt so many times in a short period but please don't try to make a big deal about it. Whenever she gets hurt her mind subconsciously takes her back to Elijah. She may not show it but it affects her. Take it from me"

"Huh?" Owen asked. "Did you ever hurt her Hennig?"

"Nah, but just take my word." Curt assured. Owen was silent for about a minute but accepted it.

"Fine but this is far from over" Owen said.

"You sound like a little detective. I'll talk to Kendra tomorrow and see if there's any weird quirk. In the meantime just try to take your mind off it okay."

"I'll try my best but she is my sister after all"

"I understand. Speaking of which, what does Bret think?" Curt asked inquisitively. Quite frankly he didn't think Bret liked Kendra all that much but he was curious to hear what Bret thought about it.

"Bret seems... troubled. He offered to drive her to Providence so he's with her now"

"Hmm, define 'troubled'" Curt asked curiously.

"I can't explain it. He seems to be in denial but at the same time... well I'm in over my head but I'm telling you I know someone is hurting her. I saw faint handprints on her arm" Owen said.

"What?! Owen are you sure?"

"I'm a wrestler Hennig" Owen stated matter-of-factly.

"Tell you what, I'll call Kends tomorrow and try to see what I can get from all this. In the meantime, try to calm down and hope for the best" Curt sighed.

"I'll try, but my sibling intuition tells me something is afoot and for some reason she just doesn't wanna tell us" Owen declared.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Kendra and Bret had driven in absolute silence for about thirty minutes. Kendra dozed off while Bret kept his eyes on the road trying himself not to fall asleep. He rolled his eyes a bit when he saw how she'd already slept off less than two hours into the ride.

"I can drive all by myself to Providence, yeah right" Bret muttered.

"Just because I dozed off a bit doesn't mean I can't hear you" Kendra said still with her eyes closed. Bret chuckled. That was new, she couldn't remember the last time her laughed at something she said.

"That's a really nice discovery." Bret said sarcastically. "Now c'mon stay awake, I'm bored"

"I don't wanna talk to you Bret, you know that" She said. "Listen to the radio"

"But the music is terrible. I wanna talk to my baby sister, is that too much too ask?" Bret whined.

Kendra was scared.

"Look, I forgive you Bret. We don't need to talk more than that. You're my brother, not my friend. Let that sink in" She said. The atmosphere was a bit tense and quiet after she said that. Until Bret spoke up again.

"Alright gotcha. But that still doesn't stop us from talking." Bret said.

"Bret no, please" She said in a quieter voice.

"Do you really hate me?" He asked. Kendra sighed. Oh for crying out loud! Where was all this coming from? What in the hell had gotten into the head of Bret Hart?!

"You know what yes I do. I hate you Bret." She said and you know what it actually felt good. She hated Bret and she knew this. It felt good to say it out loud.

"Do you hate me more than you hate Elijah?" He asked. She didn't understand what he was gunning at but she decided to answer as truthfully as she could.

"No I don't" She said. Bret nodded.

"Good to know. Listen, what I just found out today made me realize a lot of things. First off, I've been wrong to put my hands on you these past few days..."

"You've always been wrong to do that" Kendra said. "See Bret, I know guilt is a foreign emotion to you maybe that's why you're reacting like this but it's cool. It's fine. The injuries, they'll heal. We can move past from all this. But I mean what I said when I said you should stay away from me. For the sake of my mental health Bret please stay away from me." She said.

"Kendra I wanna make things right..."

'And you can do this well and good by staying away from me." She said. "You haven't made life easy for me Bret"

"I know. But my final question, do you honestly believe that I hate you?" He asked. Without hesitation she replied.

"Yes, Yes I do" She said. "Anything else?" Bret shook his head no. "Great, so I can go back to sleep" She said and soon enough she had drifted off into sleep.

Once Bret was sure that she'd slept off, he stopped the car and got out his phone. He started to record a voice note (Was this a thing in the mid 90's? If not please suspend your disbelief and read on lol).

"I asked her all the questions and she replied honestly. I know what to do now. I'll bring her over when we get to Canada. Be sure of that. Things are gonna be just fine" He said as he ended the recording. With that, he started the car and continued the journey.

Unbeknownst to Bret, Kendra was still a bit conscious and she heard every word. She trembled.

"It all makes sense now. Bret is plotting with Elijah to do something to me once we get back to Canada." She thought to herself. Oh no. What was she gonna do?

That's a wrap up. We'll soon be at thirty chapters wow.

Owen is getting suspicious, Davey is not cheating on Diana (I'd never write two cheating plots in the same story, and regardless of the rumors with Sunny, this is my story and I write what I want) and Bret and kendra's unending drama. I'm sorry if this chapter was mostly filler, there's more to come in later chapters. More of Shawn too, more of Bret, more of Curt coming too (I missed writing about him so much), stay tuned and remember to follow, favorite and review. Love y'all.

And remember to stay safe.
