Chapter 40: What Really Happened

Narrator's POV

Years ago, the Sakamaki Manor

Adorned in a pink dress, the five-year-old girl skipped past the gates of the mansion, being slightly intimidated by the aura of the Sakamaki manor, but busy being a cheerful little girl nonetheless. Her father led her inside, having her tiny hand wrapped around his index finger, and that's when a certain sophisticated lady noticed them walking inside from her spot in the garden beside the entrance.

"Oh, Mister Wilson!" the lady greeted him, walking up to the man that little girl was with. That lady, with her long, purple hair, leaned in to hug him, her eyes still mischievous and cunning.

"Cordelia," Mister Wilson spoke, embracing her back, and as they parted, Cordelia ran a hand up and down Wilson's chest, on his shirt, and said some sweet nothings, obviously beyond the little girl's understanding. As she got bored of her father and Cordelia downright flirting with each other, she spoke up, "Dad! I'm bored!"

"Oh, so you brought Madison along?" Cordelia questioned, appearing sickly sweet.

"Yes, that's me!" Maddie chirped, "And I'm foive!"

"That's… nice," Cordelia nervously laughed, and that's when a young, red-haired boy of around Maddie's age came running towards them, "Mother! I caught a butterfly!"

It didn't take another moment for Cordelia to slap him and thunder, "I told you to go and study, didn't I? Who told you to come here, Ayato?!"

"I'm… s-sorry," Ayato sobbed, tears swelling up his eyes. He spared a glance towards Maddie, and she cheerfully waved at him. He looked at her for a crisp second before running away from there.

"I apologize for that," Cordelia chuckled.

"Ah, that's alright! Where's Karlheinz?" Wilson asked, and as she began to lead him inside, he instructed his daughter, "Maddie, don't move from this spot, alright? I don't want you lost here."

"Okay!" she showed a thumbs-up, and as the two adults walked off, Maddie sighed and sat down on the ground of the entrance, close enough to the garden.

"You'll ruin your dress if you sit there," came another boyish voice, and Maddie turned around to find a boy with a lighter shade of red hair, sitting on the grass not-so far away. Hearing that, Maddie immediately stood up, dusting her bottom.

"No no no! My mommy gave it to me before she became a star! I love this dress!" Maddie panicked, looking at her dress hastily to see if she really ruined it.

"Became a star?" that boy asked.

"Yes. Dad said that she went there," Maddie pointed at the sky, and the boy, understanding what she was saying, said, "Oh."

"I'm Maddie! And I'm foive!"

"And I'm Laito…" the boy spoke, "Is this your favorite dress because your mom gave it to you?"

"Yes! And it has pockets!"

"What else did your mother give you?" Laito questioned, and Maddie fished her hand down her pocket to retrieve a picture.

"What's that?" Laito asked, walking towards her to take a look at the photograph. It had a young boy, with his hair a shade of metallic purple, standing next to a woman – Maddie's mother – and the two looked happy. Maybe a little too happy, because their smiles never wore off.

"This is my mommy, and she said that he," she pointed at the boy, "Is Ruki. He's my brother, and I want to find him and keep him with me! My sister and I want new friends, and he would play with us, right?"

"…Yeah," Laito spoke, his memory going back to the things his mother did to him. He felt melancholic as he pictured a good life with his mother and his brothers. Unfortunately, life doesn't give you all that you desire.

"I'm bored! Let's play something!" Maddie jumped up and down, and Laito giggled, seeing someone so enthusiastic after a while. That charged him up as well, and he exclaimed, "Let's play hide and seek!"

"Okay!" she agreed, completely forgetting the instructions from her dad, and as Laito closed his eyes and counted, she scurried off further into the manor, running down the pathway with flowers by the sides, leading to a tower at the end of it; the picture still in her hands.

Intrigued by the mysterious looking tower, she cautiously tread her way into it, fascinated by everything that there was. She climbed a couple of floors, still reminded of the game of hide and seek going on. She was going to win, and she knew it.

However, she heard the sound of a woman screaming, and curious, she walked towards the source, hearing some comments from that same voice, "You're a monster, Subaru! Why have I been cursed to have you?!"

"But mothe-" came a boy's voice – perhaps Subaru – but the lady's voice intervened yet again, "Shut up! You'll become a vampire like him! You're becoming one!"

"I-I-I'm sorry-"

"Go away!"

With that, Subaru walked off in despair, tears streaming down his face, and as soon as he saw Maddie, his eyes widened.

"Who are you?! What are you doing here?!" he screamed, and Maddie flinched.

However, she didn't lose her happy expression, "Are you sad?"

"That's none of your business!" Subaru spoke, still in a phase of transforming into a vampire. Seeing a human girl in front of him tempted his vampire senses – he wanted to taste her blood – and being a young boy, still growing into a vampire, he didn't waste a second on pouncing on her and puncturing her neck.

Maddie screamed for help, and it wasn't late before she found herself losing consciousness. As she almost blacked out, the last thing she heard were footsteps rushing towards them.

She collapsed, and that was when Wilson and Karlheinz rushed to the venue. The vampire king tossed Subaru to the side, and the boy was already ashamed of himself and traumatized by what he had done. Wilson picked up Maddie, and seeing that she was bleeding from her neck, he sighed.

"It's not easy being a vampire," Karlheinz chuckled, "You know it too, Wilson. She could've been a full-bred vampire too if you had married a vampire woman. After all, you are one too."

"She's a h-half-bred?" Subaru mumbled to himself. Knowing how he had injured someone without them being at fault, he began hating himself. Why couldn't he have more self-control? Why?

"What do I do now?" Wilson spoke, and Karlheinz borrowed the little girl, saying, "Worry not, friend. I'll erase the memories of all who met her today, and hers too. This day never happened."

And as he carried her, the picture of her brother slipped from her hand, flying away.

O~O~O

Maddie's POV

Present day

"…And that is what I did for the well-being of all of you!" Heinz uttered crap. I so wanted to punch him right then, and so I spoke,

"Bitch, did you just erase our memories?"
