Tears
Kelley K. Wilson
June 29, 2006
In her
heart she knew
This was their last goodbye.
When all of this
was over
He would surely die.
He used to always say
He
had no other choice,
That he was only here
To fight but not
rejoice.
At first nobody knew
Exactly what he meant
But
soon it grew more clear,
This was his last event.
But then
he came to see
That there was something more,
Something that he
never
Thought he could have before.
She came into his
life
And hid her love from him.
It took him many years
To
see what could have been.
They started out as friends
But
soon became much more,
And then it grew to love
Despite the
coming war.
But it was not to be
For evil was at hand
And
it would not leave them
His life was its demand.
So now it
was his time,
He had a job to do.
He knew that he must
fight,
He had to see it through.
She fought right by his
side
And watched him walk away.
The tears ran down her
face,
She knew she'd hate this day.
Just an hour later,
The
fight was almost done.
Though they had less people
She knew
that they had won.
It didn't take her long
To find out
where he lay.
His body was at peace
His life was lost that
day.
But he fulfilled his task
Before he left them all.
He
rid them of the dark,
He made the evil fall.
Of all his
former friends,
His death hit her the worst,
For they had been
in love
And he had been her first.
She ran away from
home
Just weeks after the war.
Her parents heard no news,
They
thought she lived no more.
Now it's ten years later.
A
child is by her side.
She's standing at his grave,
No longer
must she hide.
She gives the boy a rose.
He lays it on the
grave,
Then looks at her and asks,
"Was daddy very
brave?"
The woman nods her head
As tears roll down her
cheek.
She's held them back to long
Feared she'd be judged as
weak.
She lets out all the grief
She's felt for ten long
years,
And cleansed her soul of pain
With those forbidden
tears.
At last they turn to leave,
The woman's face now
dry,
For now she knows that this
Is not their last goodbye.
Author's Note: Though I had a character in mind while I was writing it, I purposely left the female lead of this poem ambiguous. I figured it might ruin it if I named her. This way everyone can imagine whichever character they want. I hope you enjoyed it. Please tell me what you think.
