Luz POV
Time was strange, when petrified in stone. Luz was certain of that. At first, she tried to keep track of how long she was petrified for, but eventually, gave up. It felt like an eternity. All she could do was think. She had access to none of her senses. She felt absolutely nothing. The only thing she had was her own thoughts.
She was uncertain of how long she had been like this. Unsure of how many hours, days, or even weeks passed. Without any sort of physical connection to the world, it was very hard to tell time. Kind of like when you go to sleep, Luz had once concluded when speaking to herself in her mind. How when you fall unconscious, when you wake, it feels like only a moment passed. Like you had blinked and 8 hours had gone by.
Being petrified was kind of like that. Only, she was aware that she was unconscious. And, she couldn't sleep now. No matter how hard she tried to just sleep, it wouldn't work. Whatever the petrification spell did, her mind was stuck active. She didn't feel any exhaustion, didn't feel any fatigue. She felt nothing.
She was trapped in her own mind, left to deal with her intrusive thoughts, and inner demons. At first, it wasn't that bad. But over time, that mean voice in her head had started talking. Reminding her of all the reasons she was going through with this. Of why she did it in the first place.
As a way to fix what she did wrong.
Ever since Luz had come to the Boiling Isles, she had caused nothing but trouble for everyone. And over time, that only got worse. At first, she was just a bother, a nuisance, but by the time the Day of Unity rolled around, people had lost their homes because of her, their families, their loved ones. Everyone in her life had their lives turned upside down because of her.
So, this was the best way for her to fix it all.
All going back to her very first mistake, stepping into Eda's life, and ruining everything. Luz had spent a lot of time recently going over all the mistakes she had made since coming to the isles, and knew for a fact, that if she had never come here, everyone would be better off. From the small things, to the big problems, Luz made everyone's life harder, particularly, Eda.
For starters, at the very very least, Luz made Eda's financial troubles harder. Luz couldn't eat lots of the foods in the Demon Realm, due to her biological differences to witches and demons. And the foods that she could eat were much more expensive than typical boiling isles cuisine. Eda already struggled to afford anything, and Luz knew that she more than tripled Eda's expenses. Sure, Eda might say it was nothing, or claim that she could just steal more of the things she needed. But Luz knew it stressed her out.
After all, when Eda lost her magic, she overheard Eda and Lillith talking about finances. Luz knew that Eda struggled with money.
And speaking of losing magic, that was Luz's fault too. Two of the most powerful witches in the isles were reduced to nothing because of her. In her desperation to prove to Eda that she was useful by stealing from the emperor, Luz had caused Eda to use up the last of her magic, be trapped in OwlBeast form, and nearly be turned to stone. All because of Luz. If she had just stopped trying to act heroic, it would never have happened.
And, because of Luz messing everything up, Lilith was forced to share the curse Eda was under, to revert her to her humanoid form. Resulting in both of them being unable to use magic at all. Now, they struggled to do even the most simple of spells. Sure, they claimed to enjoy the challenge, but Luz could hear them back at The Owl House. When they thought she couldn't hear. How they would grumble and complain about how much harder nearly everything in their lives was.
Even the simplest of tasks for them were now difficult. Witches relied on magic for even the simplest of things, like pouring a glass of water, grabbing a change of clothes, or even opening a door. They did it all with magic. It was how they expressed themselves. And now, the two most flashy and flamboyant witches in the isles were unable to do any of that, and were reduced to using their hands, all because of Luz.
She sighed inwardly, cursing herself for making their lives so hard. If she had just listened to Eda, if she had just not tried to be a hero, nothing would have gone wrong.
And, it was her fault that Eda started losing control of her curse as well. Eda knew her limits, and would go to sleep when her magic ran low. She knew how to manage it. But Luz, in her ever eager pursuit of magic, made Eda drain the last of her magic holding the curse at bay, and as a result, she trashed her house, and nearly killed both Luz and King.
Additionally, because of that, her curse started getting stronger. It would have stayed dormant had Luz not given it that edge it needed to grow and attack her more and more. Yet another way that Luz caused Eda to lose her magic.
Eda and Lilith weren't the only ones she hurt though. She went through all the names in her head, and decided to start with Willow.
Willow might seem like she was doing better off with Luz's help. After all, she switched to a track at school that she not only now enjoyed, but was good at, and powerful at. But, just because Luz did one good thing for her, didn't mean that her life wasn't also ruined by the human. When taking a class on memories, Luz had tried some mischief, and turned willows pictures back out, intentionally trying to be mischievous.
And that caused Amity to panic and try to hide the picture. Scared of her parents believing that she and Willow were still friends, and then getting Willow expelled because of it, Amity tried to destroy the picture, and it got out of hand. Sure, one could say that lighting paper on fire wasn't the best idea for Amity. However, had Luz not turned the memory around, and put it on display, Amity never would have seen it, never would have tried to destroy it, and Willow would never have been in danger.
She nearly died, all because Luz wanted to interfere in her friend's life.
And that wasn't the only friend she hurt.
Augustus lost friends, and his place in the HAS because of her. He snuck her into the school, and she just couldn't listen to what he said, couldn't follow his rules, and as a result, got them both thrown into detention, and got them in a lot of trouble. If she had just listened to Gus, it never would have happened.
Additionally, any time the two of them talked about the human realm, Luz was always correcting him, and telling him he was wrong. She wasn't blind, she saw how upset he got to realize that he knew almost nothing about humans. Yet in her excitement and eagerness to be included and seem interesting, she ignored how she hurt her friends feelings. If she wasn't always correcting him, he would have still been considered an expert on humans. She would never have ruined his confidence.
And how could she forget her Mami. Luz left her alone, abandoned her. She stayed in the Demon Realm, and her Mami has no idea where she really is. Sure, she made that broken portal door to talk to her, but her Mami was so scared. Luz knew she broke her heart, that she hurt her. All in the pursuit of her childish dreams, and in the hopes of being a witch, she left her Mami without a word.
And now, that she was trapped maybe forever, her Mami would never know what happened to her. She would think Luz was kidnapped, or killed, or something else. If Luz could cry, she would. The thought of causing her Mami so much trouble made her feel awful.
And Amity. Christ, Amity. Her whole life was flipped around because of Luz. Before Luz came along, Amity was top of her class. Had her whole life planned out, and was still part of her family. Sure, she was glad that Amity broke away from her mother, but that didn't change the fact that because of Luz, her whole life plan was ruined.
And, to top it off, in her efforts to help Luz, Amity had nearly died several times. Or been very hurt. She broke her leg saving Luz from Boscha. She fought Hunter at Eclipse Lake, an elite guard, all by herself. She stood up to her parents, and got put under house arrest for it. She tried fighting Belos to save Luz. And nearly died for it.
Luz was so happy to have Amity in her life. But no matter how she looked at everything, all she could see was that Amity was 10 times better off without Luz there. Luz was a human, so that brought Amity lots of problems. She wouldn't be in danger all the time. Her life wouldn't be extra hectic trying to manage Luz and her impulsiveness on top of her own life and safety. Everything about Amity's life changed when Luz entered the picture. And as far as Luz could tell, the negatives far outweighed the positives.
And it broke her heart to acknowledge it. But it was true.
She mentally took a deep breath, and continued reflecting on all those that she had hurt, or endangered. When she really focused on it, her dread only increased. Her classmates at school that were attacked by the snakes she brought. King and Eda who she lives with. Her friends at school and outside of school, constantly endangered by her crazy actions. Hunter, who was now being hunted by Belos for turning against the emperor. Lilith whose whole life was turned upside down. Her friends who actually fought the Emperor with her. All of them were put in danger, and might have even been killed all because of Luz.
All because she went back in time to meet Philip, and taught him the light glyph that let him meet The Collector.. Why did she go back in time to meet Philip? To learn how to make a new portal door. Because she destroyed it. Why did she destroy the portal door? Because she couldn't let Belos have it. Why was he going to take it? Because Luz got Eda Captured. Why was Eda captured? Because Luz decided to try and play hero and cure her curse. Why was Luz trying to cure her curse? Because she made it worse trying to learn magic.
Luz's mind kept spiraling like this. Linking all of the problems she had seen her friends encounter back to herself. All of it coming together. Like the Butterfly Effect or Ripple Effect. One action can change everything. Each action she took had a ripple that kept snowballing. If she had never come to the boiling Isles, then she wouldn't have made Eda's curse worse. If she didn't make her curse worse, she wouldn't have tried to cure it. If she didn't try to cure her curse, then Luz would never have had to destroy the portal door to keep it from Belos. If she didn't destroy the portal door, then she would never have gone back in time to meet Philip to make a new one. If she never went back in time, she never would have taught him the light glyph and helped him meet The Collector. If she hadn't helped him meet The Collector, he never would have started the Day of Unity spell. If he never started that spell, all of the isles would be safe and she and her friends wouldn't have had to fight Belos at the Titans Skull.
Everything she did just made things worse. Every action she took left everyone around her worse off than before.
And the worst part about it?
Even though Luz knew this was all her fault. Even though she knew she kept making mistakes, and ruining peoples lives, she didn't know how to stop. She never wanted her actions to snowball like this, but she didn't know how to stop it. She kept trying to fix her mistakes, and just kept making it worse.
All she could do was anguish in her cold dark mind. Trapped in stone, left alone with her thoughts. Her only solace was knowing that for once, she probably did do the right thing and save everyone.
Now she wasn't even there to make new problems. Locked away in a dungeon cell, left to Belos's schemes and will, her friends and family were safe. And, because of her, they had many years to prepare for the Day of Unity. To stop Belos. She gave them a chance, and fixed everything. For once, she finally did the right thing.
That thought was the only thing that kept her even remotely sane. She finally did it. She did the right thing. She saved everyone, she stopped causing more problems.
Luz had finally fixed all her mistakes.
