Chapter 6: Tangerine
Basilisk
The sun was beginning to dip down behind the large mountains that plagued the Skywing Kingdom by the time I was done completely trashing the coastline. I hadn't seen her in a week, and I totally wasn't just here to see if she was back home yet.
With nothing to direct my anger towards and it just bounced around in an angry ball of helplessness, it seemed much more fun. I had spent the better part of the rest of the day beating everything that moved.
It didn't help.
The small growing sapling was bearing the full brunt of my force right now, and within moments it gave way with a sickening crack reminiscent of the sound of a dragon's spine snapping.
Okay maybe it did help, and I looked around wondering if there was something else I could destroy.
All the ferns had been trampled on, the rest of the trees used for target practice which I didn't care to touch until the venom dried up.
Didn't Shell tell me something about breathing? It calms you down. I never did understand that, I breathed all the time and it certainly didn't keep me calm.
Maybe I should question her on that.
Maybe it was a Seawing thing, you probably just needed gills. Yeah that was it. Gills.
Maybe I should apologize, I don't want her to leave me afterall.
Maybe I could've handled the situation better.
"Maybe you should do this, maybe you should do that, blah blah blah, you're so weak and pathetic, Basilisk! Maybe this, maybe that, whatever!" chastised his inner voice that sounded like my older sister.
I really disliked thinking about her. Or anyone prior to that night.
Caught up in my thoughts I failed to hear the Skywing wing beats until they had almost landed. I spun around staring at the loud orange colored Skywing who had appeared.
We stare at each other unflinching but wary, no other Skywings came flocking down, this Skywing scout seemed to be on patrol alone which explained their nervousness, I could easily take them-
"Hello?" said the orange Skywing, uncertainly dropping onto the sand, still in a battle ready position they attempted to extend an olive branch, "I'm Tangerine." Before more quietly adding, "Of the Skywings." And muttering something incoherent.
I gave her a flat disinterested look, wasn't she supposed to attack me?
They blinked at me, "Yeah so I don't wanna fight, I was just uh wondering if you could give me back my ball?"
Glancing towards the shoreline I saw a tightly woven pile of sticks and leaves with the waves lapping at it.
Tangerine continued to stare. I stared back. There was no sound except for the waves and the loud seagulls hopping around in the trees. This felt terribly awkward, maybe I should say something.
"So you, don't want to fight?"
"Um yeah."
"You don't want to fight?"
"Yeah."
"You don't want to fight?"
"What happens if I say no I want to fight." asked the Skywing curiously, I shrugged grabbing the ball out of the wet yellow sand and giving it back, hoping she would go away. What was her name again? Tang-er-mean?
"My name is not Tangermean!" huffed Tangermean turning their gaze back towards me, with a comically offended expression on.
Oops did I say that out loud?
Tangermean, I was just going to keep rolling with that, was now the annoyed offended one between the two of us, at least I thought so until she burst out laughing with a loud snort.
Okay what was going on? Wasn't she upset? Because I certainly was!
"Tangermean! No no no! Tan-ger-ine."
"That's what I said, Tangermean. Are we saying different things?" I replied, purposely trying to tick her off.
"TAN-GER-INE." sounded out Tangerine again, louder this time.
"Tangermean." I repeated as well with the expression of angelic innocence all over my face.
"Okay say Tan" instructed Tangerine, like a tanning shop or something.
"Tan."
"Ger"
"Ger"
"Rine"
"Rine"
"Now say it together. Tangerine!"
"TANG-ER-MEAN!" I shouted instead, why didn't I mess with dragons more often? This was so much fun, especially the miffed expression he would get afterwards.
Tangerine spoke up first this time, catching what I was doing, "You're messing with me aren't you?"
"Never." I replied trying to hide the smile
"That isn't nice!" huffed Tangerine but her tone was in the fake offended teasing way that Shell would use whenever he found something new.
"Hey Sheeellllly!" I'd tease when I was younger, much younger, around half my age, she was the only dragon I ever really decided to get close to. "Your back! Diddd you have to leave for sooo long!"
"It was only a few months." she replied distantly, staring at the sunset as I walked up to her. Did- Did I do something wrong?
"Shell?" I asked in confusion, taking a few steps closer.
"Shell?" the repeated distantly, I narrowed my eyes, were they mocking me!?
"I found this really cool shell." I said trying to ignore that, it was fine, right? "It kind of looks like a tiger's eye, and it's sparkly!"
"Oh it's A shell."
I nodded my head, "Mhm! Do you like it?"
What I really meant, do you still like me?
"It's very cool!" said Shell, getting a bit of energy back into her voice, "Sorry Basilisk, I haven't been feeling like myself."
"Oh okay." I said feeling immensely relieved, "Are you JEALOUS, I have a much cooler Shell than you!"
"I'm incredibly jealous! Rawr, I wish that was my shell!" said Shell in the same tone of voice Tangerine was using now, "Your not my friend anymore!"
"Well you still can't have it!"
"Hmph! Well guess what, I have a much better shell, me!" smirked Shell teasingly, "You can't compete with the best!"
A small part of my mind, a traitorous one, dared to think of a solution. That I missed Shell.
That wasn't it. Definitely not.
You can tell I maybe had a little too much fun writing that scene lol
