Chapter 12:
The walk to the hospital wasn't long, and we got joined by another group of local pros, those who where fighting some Nomus earlier, or so they told, they also needed to go to the hospital, since it was a though fight. I could sympathize with them, that Nomu that I killed during the USJ incident looked like a strong opponent, it was a miracle that I was able to dispatch it like that.
In the hospital, Iida was put in a bed, and given some treatment, even though his injuries weren't very serious, they needed to be cleaned up. While me and Shoto were waiting for him, we ended up meeting Endeavor.
It was boring in the hospital, and Shoto still wasn't the most talkative, so we kind of just sat next to each other, waiting for Iida and our respective teachers that we were interning under. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting. I was never that good at it, a hole of boredom opening in my mind, and my thoughts would wander away in different directions.
I was broken out of my musings by a source of heat approaching, and none other than the one and only Endeavor entered the hallway.
"Ah Shoto. Come, our job is done here." Shoto looked at me, but I just waved him away, he had his problems and I could wait for Iida alone. "Also, Kamiyama, Corrosive is in room 245." Now that grabbed my attention, and after a quick "Thank you and have a good Mr. Endeavor!" I was running in the hallway, which was probably against the rules but I didn't care.
I frantically opened the door to the room, only to find that it was extraordinarily ordinary. He was sitting in a hospital bed, with Fumiko sitting in a chair next to him.
"Doppo, you've arrived. " she noted. It didn't look like she was concerned for Corrosive, but I hoped that it was just the mask she put on.
"Hello to you as well." I replied, then took a seat. It was surprisingly comfortable, much better than the ones outside.
"So, what happened?" I asked.
"He got stupid." she said, plain and simple, and that's basically what it was. "Stain got his blood and he didn't notice it, so when he tried to fake getting stopped he actually got stopped. The trap still worked however, and he killed Stain, with a body to prove it. The mist was visible from the air, so Endeavor who was searching for more Nomus saw him, and since they know each other" that was an interesting piece of information, I filed it away to ask about it later "he rescued him, and took him here. Just as I said, he got overconfident."
"What's going to happen with my training then?" I asked, since I knew that this was the important question, not the sentimental stuff, like "Is he going to be okay?" or something like that. He definitely was going to be okay sooner or later, it was a question of when, and we only had four days left.
"While he's incapacitated I'm going to take over the parts of your training that don't require him." I nodded, and we lapsed into silence.
It was a couple hours later that I remembered that Iida was still here, and I should at least check up on him, so with that I went back to his room.
He was alright, but just to be sure I reinforced that what he did was really stupid, and he should never forget that he always has us when he needs help.
After that, I went back to the room, where Fumiko told me that I had enough time to laze around aimlessly, and it was time to continue training.
It was two days later that Corrosive got back to the base.
I was in the living room, waiting for Fumiko to show up for morning training. She was late, but I didn't think much of it, and I was even thankful a little, since she could cut with a sword, whenever she demonstrated the weak points on me, telling me that it would help me remember them better.
I heard the sound of two people appearing. One thing I learnt during my apprenticeship, is that paranoia is not optional, it's necessary, and so I broke down my arm immediately, just in case it wasn't them.
Fumiko and Corrosive turned up in the door to the living room, but I aimed my arm of void at them, like a gun. I could actually shoot it like a harpoon gun now, so it wasn't just an empty threat.
"Identify yourselves!" I shouted, since they were almost surely Fumiko and Corrosive, and if they were, then the training would have been extra painful if I forgot proper safety procedures.
Fumiko muttered something that sounded suspiciously like "I swear this is the worst code phrase I've ever needed to use", but loudly she only said "I went to get choco-banana milk, but I could only buy one in strawberry flavour."
I rebuilt my arm, and with a smile I greeted them properly: "It's good to see you again sensei! How do you feel?"
"Like shit." Ah yes, he didn't like pain from stabbing, that's an interesting piece of info that I learned about Corrosive. He could take fire, ice or any condition on the outside of his skin without problem, thanks to his built up tolerance with his quirk, but the moment he was stabbed, his mood became much worse. It looked like he got acclimated to it however, but he still wouldn't sugarcoat it.
"That's a good motivator to not do it again." chipped in Fumiko.
"Yes, yes, you already told me at least one hundred times."
"So, you're going to continue working as a hero?"
"Eh, going to take a little break, pretty sure that the government won't miss me. Those fuckers just won't admit how much I've helped them by getting rid of villains that they couldn't just execute due to their own laws.
But enough chit-chat, let's continue training." And boy did we continue. I'm pretty sure my pain tolerance increased in that one week more than in my entire life combined.
The week ended almost too fast, and I was sad to go, but also happy since there was a reason, my pain tolerance increased like nothing else, and it wasn't magical gummy bears.
"Don't worry, we're not letting you go, once my apprentice always my apprentice, at least in spirit." And that was true. I learned so much in that one week that I spent there, how to make sure that there isn't any evidence against you being one of the most interesting subject that I've ever got thaught on. "Plus, if you need help, we're always here."
"I will count on that, since you know, every bit of help matters. See you later sensei!" I waved both at him and Fumiko as I left, since she was too lazy to teleport me "needlessly" as she put it.
I was back in the class, and everyone was talking about their experience. One thing nobody talked about however, was the Hero Killer. He got swept under the rug, same as all the other villains that got permanently dissolved by Corrosive. There was no big speech for him to give, since dead men tell no tales.
It didn't take long for the first class to start, signaled by a loud All Might who shouted at us through an open door to get our clothes on and meet him outside.
"Long time no see everyone!" he greeted us, in front of an urban simulation area. "For this time, it's hero basic training, but since you've all just gotten back from your internships we'll have some fun with a rescue training race!" Iida just had to cut in, as always "Shouldn't we do that at USJ?!", but he was shot down, "That's for disasters! Now, where was I? Yes, a race! It's Training Field Gamma. A dense factory-like area, built like a labyrinth. You'll break up into 4 five-person groups, and go through it one at a time.
When I send out a distress signal from a random location inside, you'll start the same time from the outskirts of the city. It's a race to see who'll rescue me first!
Of coure, you'll have to keep collateral damage to a minimum, since this is a rescue operation."
I was part of the first group, along with Iida, Ojiro, tape-guy and Mina. Even before start, I already took on a full transformation, and I was waiting like that. I created a frog like body, with two strong legs in the back, and I've modified the first two to be more optimal for climbing and clinging to surfaces. I also added two wings to the back, to be able to give an extra push in the air.
When I heard All Might's unmistakeable "Start!" I immediately jumped up to the top of one of the containers, and from then on I jumped forward, using my wings to give me pushes in the air.
Sero was not far behind however, so I angled myself in a way that the wind generated by my wings got blown back at him, slowing him down, and allowing me to get first place.
It was one week left 'till the exams, and Aizawa reminded us of the date of the exams, and told us that it's imperative that we study. I just nodded same as everyone else, but inside I knew that I should really start by now, since it never came out good when I left studying until the last possible minute.
On the way home, I had a brilliant idea. I immediately took out my phone from my backpack, and called a number that I didn't think I would use this soon.
"Hey, Corrosive?"
"Yes, why have you called?"
"Well, you know, it's one week until the UA exams, and I wanted to know if you had anything that I should know about. I'm sure you know that they just love to use non-standard practices, so I'm sure they got something planned for it."
"You were right to call me, since they do have a practical exam that isn't what you were expecting. I know that whenever villains got really brave, and do tricks like this, they would make the practical exams harder, so you'll probably have it in a similar vein.
I'm sure that you thought that it's either like the quirk apprehension test, or a combat test against another student, usually you would be right, but as I said before, your year is a hard one, so it's probably combat against the teachers in some way, sometimes in teams. As for the written part, nobody really cares about that, I'm sure you can find a way to cheat if you're too lazy to study."
"Hey! I'm not lazy! I'm just horrible at memorization, you know it!"
"I sure do! I remember when you had to study biology and Fumiko motivated you through showing it on your own body parts, can't forget those screams of pain."
"Laugh all you want you bastard, Doppo out." I hanged up.
Now that I got an idea for the practical exam, I needed to find a way to cheat in the written one, since I sure as hell wasn't going to waste time memorizing information.
I thought long and hard about what I should do. I thought about getting a lot of paper inside myself, and then crack the inside of my hand, and read it from there, but that would have been way too visible. I needed something more covert. Something that wasn't visible from the outside at all.
But how could I read it if it was inside? I couldn't roll my eye all the way in 180 degrees. Or could I? This question was followed by a lot of experimentation, and after a couple of attempts I instead transitioned into rebuilding my body without pain receptors. After that little trick was gotten down, I got back to eye-rolling, and surprisingly, I could roll it all the way to the inside, which was all black.
So, I basically cracked my face, broke it in, put in a small light, and tried again. This time, I still didn't see anything, since my head was like a bowl filled with void. I spent 30 minutes trying to get internal manipulation down, and after a while I was able to do it while I was watching it. Not instinctively, but it was acceptable for now. I did the same thing from earlier, literally broke in my face, put in a lot of papers, and it worked! I could read them, however I had to be careful, since in order to see properly with my inside-eye, I had to close my other one, so my brain could focus on one picture. As long as I didn't make it obvious, it was good to go.
On the day with the first written test, I've styled my hair in a way that it covered my eyes a bit, obscuring my vision but making it less visible if they were closed, or if there was no pupil at all in my right one. During school I was stressed, but once I got into it the cheating went swimmingly, and I did the same both the second and third days, after which I took special joy in burning the papers that had the lectures written on them, same with destroying the light that I used. While they worked, it was not pleasant at all to have something literally in my head.
It was day for the practical exams however, and last night I refreshed my biology knowledge that I got from Fumiko, and prepared to use it, since against teachers I couldn't afford to play nice. And when I arrived, I saw all the teachers there, and I mentally congratulated myself on thinking forward and asking Corrosive about it.
We were told that we would fight the teachers in two on one combat matches, but guess what, nineteen is an odd number, and who's the lucky one who doesn't need to work in a team?! Me of course! I was put against Aizawa, pretty sure he wants to erase my quirk so I need to fight without it, which was my greatest weakness until the internship. It still is, but I've learned a couple of tricks there that will come in handy.
The objective was to either put the handcuffs on the teacher, or to escape from the stage. It was an easy choice on which to do, so I settled on making an escape plan. First off, I knew that Aizawa needed to look at the user to use his quirk, so if I could either block his vision, or hide from him then I would be able to win.
To encourage us even further, the teachers even put a handicap on themselves, weights, so they'll be slower and weaker. Very considerate indeed.
I watched the first couple of matches in the viewer room, and there was nothing interesting about them.
Kirishma and sugar-boy lost easily to Cementoss, just trying to brute force their way to the solution.
Fumikage and Tsuyu managed to legcuff the teacher, which was not specified as accepted beforehand.
Iida managed to throw out Ojiro from the area, it was a solid strategy.
And now it was time for my fight. It was in an area filled with houses, and roads and alleys, there were a lot of good places to hide from Eraser Head. I could also hide on the top of the houses, he wouldn't be able to see me up there either.
"Ready, go!" I heard the voice of the announcer, probably Present Mic again, and I did the first thing that needed to be done: I searched for the tallest building in the vicinity, and after finding it I fought off the instinct to go full on spider-man, and instead took the much less visible route that the stairs offered. Up there, I lay low like a sniper, and surveyed the area, searching for Aizawa. It appeared that I was right, he was on top of a building, just like how Uchiha Itachi did it in his iconic pose, the only thing that he was missing was a sword.
He was also looking around, so I knew I had to be careful, since if he spotted me then I'll lose the advantage that I now have. He was up there, surveying the area, waiting for me to get close, and then he would ambush me from above. Solid plan, but he didn't account for me being one step further in the planning game.
I went down the starts, went into an alley that lead towards him, but instead of transforming, I merely let my skin fall off, and just lay there as a sentient puddle. Moving in this form was slow, but I was able to blend in the shadows much better, plus I didn't make any sounds that he could hear. I got pretty close, and I hid under a rock that was closer to the exit than to the way from where I came. The next section didn't have any good alleys, and I would have had to exit into the sunlight, from where Aizawa could have easily got me.
Under the rock, I materialized a tiny body, so that was the form of the "user" that he had to look at, for which he would have had to come down to the street, which would have been suicide. But the plan still wasn't done, if he was in this state he would just jump away because of his instincts, as I said, people just feel off when it's about the void, so I needed to distract him.
I used one of my arms to create a vine-like tendril of void, and that one began to creep up the lamp that he was sitting on. The other, went around a house, and started coming back through the alley, but before that, I increased the size of the end of it into something remotely resembling a transformation, it looked like it was made from plasticine by a four year old, however for a distraction it was acceptable. I started the vine and the puppet at the same time, and I could see how Aizawa stiffened when he saw it, and prepared to jump down at it just as it came out of the alley. When his mind was occupied with this new development, I pushed the vine further, and made it split into two symmetric tentacles, both of which had sharp ends.
He sensed them only a second too late, but that second was the only one I needed to impale them through both of his legs. He tried to fell forward, to get out of the binding of the void, but I wouldn't let him, and connected the two tentacles into one, which I then dragged towards me, and he fell in front of me. Well, I made sure that he wouldn't be able to stop nor follow me, as I cut into him multiple times, both on his legs and his arms. They were small cuts, I made sure that they wouldn't be bloody and extreme, but thanks to the biology lessons I now knew where I needed to hit to get the muscles that caused the most pain and stopped movement the most easily.
Before I crawled out from under the rock, I made sure to hold his head down, so he couldn't look at me. I made sure to keep up the concentration even while I rebuilt my body, and after that was done I put the handcuffs onto him.
After my match, my fighting mood completely evaporated, and I moved from "Yeah let's watch them!" to "I couldn't care less." about the other matches.
AN: Not much to say here actually, someone pointed out that I spelled Ochaco's name wrong so I'll write it the correct way from now on.
Also, with this chapter, I went past the 30k barrier, which is just a great feeling. Also, I'm at the end of season 2 which is crazy, I didn't think I would watch MHA this fast. And summer vacation still hasn't started (there is still this week of school left in my country) so imagine how fast my writing is going to go when that happens!
Anyways, I hope you liked this chapter, please leave a review!
