AN: Glad to see that someone is interested in the villain!Doppo idea, I'll be working on it from now on, so when I finish this one I'll have a couple chapters ready at least.
Chapter 16:
During the night, all of us saw All Might's battle with All for One through the television in the hospital. It was a small tv with terrible quality, but we were crowded around it like it was Jesus himself who descended from the heavens.
We cheered for him throughout, not believing even for a second that the Symbol of Peace would lose the battle, and he didn't, standing tall and proud by the end of it, even without his muscle form. At that point, the cheering was so loud that we were kicked out of the hospital, and Fumiko told us to go home.
"Time to go home everyone, don't do anything illegal." she announced, as we left through the doors. She herself started walking in another direction, always being vigilant not to show others her quirk unless necessary. I ran after her however, since she still had my cat with her, and I needed to make sure that it was at least still alive, and it was still a cat. Some things that I saw in Fumiko's laboratory would have made even villains puke and swear that even they have morals.
"You didn't follow protocol." she started without greeting me, after we were out of the view of others.
"I know, I didn't want to get the spotlight on myself. You know, they weren't supposed to know who gave the intel, I don't want to ruin my popularity."
"Like you have any."
"More than you at least."
"It means you're an even worse hero, the best ones are always unknown." and to that I couldn't think of a good answer. Theoretically, she was right, being a known hero allowed villains to prepare ahead of time, they could have prepared ahead of time if they were smart enough, but Corrosive always told me to never count on the enemy's stupidity. It was good to account for it certainly, but never take it for granted.
"So, can I get my cat back?" I changed the subject to my original intentions. We were already in a pretty empty place, no people around us, it was perfect to teleport away.
She turned and faced me, and she put her head into an overly visible thinking pose, then replied with the most cheerful tone I ever heard from her "No.", after which she quickly left. I hoped that my cat was still alright, or next time I would make sure that Fumiko was the one on whom I practiced to get the correct muscles.
I went home, thinking on the way: Who has One for All now? I'm sure he had a successor, but who? Definitely not Midoriya, and if they have any brains they'll make sure that it won't get out, so there's fat chance that I'll learn it in the school itself.
From the internet, I knew that he had a sidekick, Sir Nighteye, who opened his own hero agency, so maybe he used that for scouting potential successors. That would be a good starting point to check, if I learned who went there from UA as interns then they could all be added as potential One for All holders. Or maybe Sir Nighteye himself? He can't be discarded, being someone's sidekick for years would make him an ideal candidate, even if he was only meant to hold onto it temporarily while they find a suitable host.
So on the list was Sir Nighteye. Who else?
Research was hard, that much I already knew. This experience just reinforced it.
So, right away, it wasn't public who went to a specific agency, from the agency's end. However, there was a system in UA where the students could make their portfolios public, for others to see, as a form of encouraging them, but mostly it was used for bragging. I scorched through it, writing down everyone who went to the same agency Sir Nighteye was part of, and let me tell you: that's a lot of people, it's a popular agency.
Sadly, personality wasn't a big part of these portfolios, so I couldn't exclude based on that, even though for All Might that was probably the most important factor when he decided on his successor.
I was lost in my thoughts, so I didn't hear the doorbell until the third time.
"I'm coming!" I shouted back, and quickly looked at myself in the mirror: My hair was fine, actually, it always tended to end up in good styles, maybe the anime logic again? My clothes, still fine, there was no blood anywhere, and so I went to the door.
When I opened it, I didn't expect to see Aizawa there, and I expected him to be in a business suit with proper hair even less.
"Sensei, come in then." I invited him in, to be able to get away for a minute and gather my thoughts. Did I do something again? I was fairly sure that I had not made any large mistake in the past couple weeks, but maybe somewhere along the line I lost control, and killed someone, and I didn't remember it, and that would be just terrible. Suffice to say, I was on the edge of having a mental breakdown.
"I see your parents aren't home." Parents? Right, honestly, a bit embarrasing to admit, but I almost forgot about them. Really, it's quite easy to settle into the isolation and forget the world beyond it.
They were both working on a long-running series in Europe, all year long. I haven't seen them in a while.
"They're not even in the country."
"I know, I needed to start the conversation. I'm only here to deliver the news on UA's new dorm system, which you're parents already accepted over a video call."
"Well, what more is there to say then?"
"I am required by law to inform everyone, plus I wanted to thank you for stopping the others from doing something stupid."
"I don't want any more deaths."
"Neither do I. The dorms are opening in a few days, you get to choose your place when you arrive, if you want to get a good one you should hurry and be there first."
"Thanks for the info Sensei, I'll see you there." This actually went way better than expected, spending that much time in front of a computer must not have been healthy. How long I was there actually? I came here sometime around 8 AM, and now it's like 2 PM. Yes, I did spend too much time in front of the screen, I should go out, at least to just clean my head.
It was two days later that I entered UA again, heading towards the newly built dorms, having already made a couple of lists as to who I want to be in a room in with, and with who I don't. So on the ideal list was Iida, Shoto, Tokoyami, Koda and Mezo. They were chosen because they knew how to keep quiet, and wouldn't waste time with such shit like being loud and things like that, which I'm sure Kirishma and Kaminari will do frequently.
Honestly, I didn't like this new dorm idea at all, I always hated sleeping in a room with other people. First off, just falling asleep is hard, with everyone fucking breathing right there, thanks to my enhanced hearing, it's really annoying. Plus if someone wakes up before me, then they either just sit there, or get up and start walking, which is like breathing but worse, and then I'll have to get up, since once I woke up I can't get back to sleep. (Damn, I'm a really whiny person, aren't I?)
In front of the dorms, we were greeted by Aizawa, who was back to his usual "I don't get enough money for this shit" look, with his hair being messy and his eyes looking tired.
"For now, I'm just glad that we got Class 1-A together again. Now, I'll explain briefly about the dorms, but first, we need to focus on getting a provisional hero license for you that you were supposed to get during the camp.
Kirishma, Kaminari, both of you wanted to go along with Class B to the villains hideout, and the rest knew about it. If it wasn't for All Might's retirement, I would have expelled everyone but Kamiyama." All eyes were set on me. Thanks sensei for throwing me under the bus, you lazy bastard "He called us beforehand, and we sent a sidekick from one of the heroes who took part in the raid. He was the only one who didn't betray our trust that we had in them." Great sensei, keep those compliments coming, because group psychology is totally not working against me. "Next time, follow the protocol like he did. " And without missing a beat, like he didn't just destroy everyone's trust in me, he continued: "That's all, we're going inside." And instead of staying back with everyone else, I went inside first, though the others quickly followed.
When he entered, he told us about the interior of our class building, since each class had one. Girls were on the right, and boys were on the left, with the first floor being the common area, containing such things as food, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Laundry rooms, they were interesting things. I rarely used on in this life of mine, since thanks to my new body I didn't sweat at all, so the only times I needed them was when I got my clothes dirty, which happened rarely.
On the second floor were the rooms, and oh god everyone had their own, I bring back everything bad I ever said about UA, this is the best boarding school ever!
AN: As some already saw, I got a bit sidetracked, and started writing an alternate version of this fic called "A Broken World", in which Doppo is a full-on villain. It doesn't mean I abandoned this one, on the contrary, it allows me to focus more here since my mind isn't filled with contradictory inspiration.
Small retcon: The MC only has a white mask when he loses control.
Also, it's probably not the best, but I think it's useful, so here's some writing advice that I use: When I'm writing a character's dialogue and I'm not sure about their personality, it always helps to search in my mental database for a character who's similar enough that I could swap them in the situation, use them and write the dialogue like I was writing it for them, without any verbal tics or special words they use.
This is again one of those intermission chapters, which I feel are always nice as cooling down after long periods of action.
