It seemed like a typically calm morning in the Owl House for Luz...until she was woken up by the sound of something crashing. Groaning, Luz sat up and rubbed her eyes as she climbed out of her bed and got changed. Suddenly, she was alerted by a knock at her window, turning around she saw a familiar owl face peering in, and opened the window.
"Morning, Luz!" Hooty exclaimed.
"Hey, Hooty" Luz replied, "So, uh, what's going on, downstairs?"
"Oh, that's just Eda, she's got a lot of energy right now, and I was coming here to give you a little warning."
Luz looked confused; Eda was always a little eccentric, but if even Hooty says she was acting up more so than usual...oh boy.
"Does she always do this?" Luz asked.
"Well, actually yes, she does this every year. You should probably go ask her yourself."
"Oookay, well, thanks Hooty!"
Hooty was about to reply but was immediately distracted by a passing bug and took off after it. Luz simply rolled her eyes in amusement before going down to see what the commotion was all about. No sooner did she get downstairs was she greeted by Eda's sister, Lilith, who seemed to be looking at something in the living room while having a discussion with King, who sat on her shoulders.
"So, you're telling me she still does this?" Lilith asked.
King nodded, "Every year that I can remember. Seriously, I think she's taking it a bit too far at this point."
"I heard that!" Eda's voice came from the room, "I told you guys, this is gonna be a good year, I can feel it!"
"Taking what too far?" Luz asked, getting Lilith and King's attention. The two turned to see her.
Lilith sighed. "It's a long story, but I guess you may as well know."
"Ok, here's the gist, you know Halloween, right?" King asked Luz.
"Yeah" Luz replied, "You guys celebrate it too?"
"Maybe not the same way you humans do, but yes."
Lilith nodded in agreement before continuing, "Well, every year on Halloween night, the Boiling Isles are visited by a group of rather strange people who claim to be from a place called Halloween Town, sadly, tried as I might, I never found where this place was."
Luz looked interested. "Really? Something not even you could find?"
Lilith seemed embarrassed for a moment. "A failure I will never forget..."
Just then, Eda appeared with a huge grin on her face. "You telling Luz about Halloween Town?"
Luz nodded "I'm guessing you're looking for this place?"
"Nope! Better!"
Before Luz could say anything else, Eda grabbed her by the arm and pulled her into the living room, where Luz could see a few scrolls and books stacked up on and around the couch. Eda picked up one of these books and handed it to Luz as she explained, "There have been stories of this place for a very long time, but there's one particular resident that I'm interested in. Flip to page 45, you'll see."
Surprised that Eda would remember a page number for something, much less open a book to begin with, Luz did so, and saw a section whose title she read aloud. "The Pumpkin King?"
Eda nodded excitedly, "Bingo! That's the guy I'm after."
King crawled up on the couch next to her. "Geez, and you've been at this for how long now exactly?"
"Since we were children, actually." Lilith answered.
"I told ya, sis, I'm not stopping till I find this guy" Eda said, "and I'm not letting a little ol' curse hold me back either."
As the Clawthorne sisters talked, Luz read the section on the Pumpkin King. It turns out this was the ruler of Halloween Town and is known as the scariest of its residents; the best at Halloween pranks and frights. Definitely sounded like this was someone Eda would idolize.
"So, what's your plan when you do find him?" Luz asked.
"Simple, really," Eda replied, "I'm gonna try and learn all his spooky little secrets; find out what exactly makes him so good at scares and every other Halloween thing you can imagine."
"She's just jealous because he does it better than her." King said.
"King!" Eda said.
King simply shrugged. "Am I wrong?"
Eda gave the little Titan a pointed glare before her expression softened and she sighed. "Okay, fine, I'll admit, he does have a knack for doing Halloween pranks a lot better than I do. I've seen people who've been scared by him, but for some reason, I can never seem to ssee him myself! You have any idea how ridiculous that is for me?!"
Lilith sighed. "Maybe if you didn't make such a big deal out of it..."
Eda interrupted. "Oh yeah? What, as if you haven't seen him."
Lilith said nothing but gave a smug grin that told Eda everything.
"Are you kidding me?!" she demanded.
"He's not that mysterious, besides," Lilith turned red in embarrassment, "I was on the receiving end of one of his scares once. I will say he's...very good."
"Well, did you see what he looked like?" Eda asked.
"A glimpse." Lilith admitted, "He's very tall and skinny with a flaming pumpkin head one moment, a skull the next." she hesitated "To be honest, I'm not sure what he really looks like now that I think about it."
"Well, that doesn't help anything" Eda groaned in frustration.
"Maybe we can help you this time." Luz offered, "I'm sure we can find some way for you to meet him."
Eda sounded a bit more hopeful. "You really mean that, kiddo?"
"Sure. Besides, it'll be nice to see how you guys celebrate Halloween here on the Boiling Isles."
Eda patted Luz on the head, "Alright, I'll take you up on that offer. How bout you, sis?"
Lilith looked rather unamused. "I'd rather not get into something so nonsensical."
"Oh, come on. I'm sure you've wanted to see him in person. Deep down in that little nerd head, you know I'm right."
Lilith seemed to strain a bit against Eda's clever nagging, but finally gave in. "Ugh, fine. I will admit, I have been a little curious."
Eda fist bumped the air. "Alright, we got a team!"
Lilith's face suddenly turned mischievous. "Actually, sister, I have a better idea. Let's make this a competition. Whoever finds him first get first pick of the Halloween treats."
Eda's eyes narrowed as she smirked. "You got yourself a deal, sis."
Luz lit up as well. "Maybe I can ask some of my friends from Hexside to join. We can have teams."
"Now you're talkin!" Eda seemed to become giddier by the second.
The only one who seemed uneasy was King. "Why do I have the feeling this isn't gonna end well?"
"Oh, come on, King, you worry too much!" Eda laughed, "Luz, call up your buddies, we've got a lot of planning to do."
Shortly afterwards, Luz sat in the living room alongside Willow, Gus, and Amity. Willow told them that Hunter was also on board when she brought it up to him, he just wasn't able to join the meeting, saying he'd meet them in town tomorrow night. King also watched from nearby. The kids all sat on the couch as Eda and Lilith both stood in front of them, choosing their team members, and it came down to Eda having Luz, Amity, and King, while Lilith's team had Willow, Gus, and Hunter.
Once teams were determined, Lilith pulled over a writing board. "Ok, so what do we know about the Pumpkin King?"
Gus was surprisingly the first to speak. "Us Illusion magic specialists are crazy about the guy."
Luz looked surprised. "He has magic?"
Gus continued, looking rather excited. "He can appear and disappear when he wants, can shapeshift into a few things, and is always notorious for scaring with his illusions. He's so cool!"
Eda smirked. "Amen, kiddo."
"That doesn't help us at all, though." Amity pointed out, "If he's a master of illusions, how are we supposed to catch him, much less even know it's really him?"
This question left the group stumped, and they all thought in silence.
"Maybe lure him in with a trap?" Willow suggested.
"A master of pranks and traps? He'd see it coming a mile away." Eda replied.
"Then we catch him in the act" Luz suggested, "Split up, get ourselves isolated, and try and become a target of his, so when he does scare one of us, we can try and talk to him afterwards, assuming he doesn't slip away afterwards."
Lilith stroked her chin. "You might actually be onto something there. While I personally would NOT like to be scared by him again, but I personally don't have any better ideas."
"Yeah, me neither." Eda admitted, "Alright then, so we'll all meet up here once the Hallowed Light begins and head into town together, and then we'll split up. Sound good?"
The other witches nodded their heads in agreement.
Luz, however, briefly looked confused. "Hallowed Light?"
"It's what we consider the start of the Halloween night celebrations, and it signals the arrival of Halloween Town's residents." Willow explained, "You'll know it when you see it."
"Ooookay then. Sounds like a plan then!"
Eda let out a hearty laugh. "This is gonna be a good night, I can feel it!"
King gave her a questioning look. "You really like tempting fate, don't ya?"
"Oh, come on, King. it's Halloween tomorrow! Aside from a few scares, what could possibly happen?"
Eda was right about one thing. It was Halloween tomorrow, and anything could happen on Halloween...
Ok, so I'm admittedly not sure when Willow and the others started calling Hunter by Hunter instead of Caleb, especially around the time they were all still on the Boiling Isles (It's been a while since I actually saw the show but I'm just gonna just keep calling him Hunter because I'm pretty sure he's more recognizable by that name.
Let me know what you think so far!
