"It's ok, Baby. Just hold on a little longer; we're almost there." Trunks told Miyuki, flying across the skies of West City.
Flying was faster than trying to drive: ten minutes vs. twenty or so.
It would've only taken a second to teleport, but Trunks has never teleported with anyone before; he wasn't very confident with trying that. Not to mention: he didn't know how Miyuki would react to instant transmission.
"Mmmm…" Miyuki moaned, holding onto Trunks for dear life, scared.
"I've got you. We're going to land in just a few minutes. I'm not going to let you fall; I promise." Trunks calmly told Miyuki, holding her close.
"Da." Miyuki softly spoke, still clinging to Trunks.
Trunks just smiled before lightly kissing the top of Miyuki's head.
"Here we are." Trunks told Miyuki, landing in front of the ER.
"Mmmm…" Miyuki cried, burying her face in Trunks's shoulder.
"It's ok, Miyuki." Trunks calmly repeated, walking into the hospital.
There were a good amount of people, but still, it was quiet for a Sunday morning.
"May I help you, Sir?" The receptionist calmly asked.
"I hope so. Though, it's not me who needs attention; it's my two and a half year old daughter." Trunks answered once he was over there.
"Oh, you're Miyuki's father. Sorry. I recognize Miyuki by her ears. Although, it seems her tail is gone." The receptionist spoke, shocking Trunks for a moment until she explained how she knew what she knew.
"Yes. She's half Saiyan on my side: her having her Saiyan tail would be disastrous, so they're removed as soon as possible. Trust me when I say it's for the best." Trunks explained, insisting.
"Of course. She was just here a few days ago: she was just fine—aside from the obvious issues. Can you tell me what you're bringing her in for?" The receptionist politely asked
"Seeing as you Miyuki and all that; you know I just got custody of her yesterday. The physical therapist who had been working with her bought and sent her a specialized bouncer thing—along with a long list of her allergies. Well—and I don't know if this is classified as a severe reaction, but I know it's an allergic reaction to a peanut shell—which was excluded from her allergy list." Trunks explained, lifting Miyuki's shirt a little so the receptionist could see her back.
"Oh, my… Sign for permission to treat her. Now, she has been here before, so we do have all her allergies on file. However, that was when she was under the care of Child Services, so you'll need to fill this all out and hand it into me before I can admit her. It doesn't seem like there's anyone coming in, so you can sit right here and fill everything out. However, if someone does walk through the doors, you'll have to go to the waiting room." The receptionist calmly explained, handing Trunks a clipboard with two two-sided sheets of paper.
"Ok." Trunks replied, taking the clipboard. He filled everything out with ease: it wasn't anything he didn't know:
· Name
· Birthday
· Address
· Phone number
· Email Address (optional)
· etc.
The only thing Trunks wasn't sure of was if he could put Miyuki on the family's insurance plan. He called Bulma to ask and make sure it was ok until he got on his own or whatever; she gave him all the information he needed.
"All done?" The receptionist asked when Trunks walked back over. Someone walked in with severe stomach pains, so Trunks had to take Miyuki and the paperwork into the waiting room.
"Yes, Ma'am." Trunks replied, handing her the paperwork.
"Ok. Just give me one—minute. Now, you said she was having an allergic reaction to a peanut shell: a severe rash. However, it seems like new symptoms are starting to show up. I just need her wrist for the band, and she'll be checked in." The receptionist calmly told Trunks after typing some things down as Miyuki started lightly wheezing.
"It's ok, Baby; she's just going to give you a special hospital bracelet." Trunks gently told Miyuki when met with resistance.
"There we go. She's all checked in; you can go have a seat. A nurse will be out shortly. But before you go: you needed worry about her not liking you. I can see it in your eyes: the fear you have that you're not doing a good job or she's afraid of you. Just by watching her, I can tell she trusts and most likely loves you; she's just shy and probably doesn't know how to say or show it. Oh, and the way she's clinging to you is a big indication she trusts you. But I should let you go. I hope she feels better." The receptionist explained with a gentle smile.
"Thank you." Trunks replied before turning to go to the waiting area.
However:
"Miyuki?" A nurse called from the large doors.
'That was fast.' Trunks thought to himself before turning around.
"Hi. I'm Nina and I'll be Miyuki's nurse. You're Dad, yes?" The nurse, Nina, introduced herself before asking.
"Yes. Trunks Briefs." Trunks replied, following Nina.
"I hope we like ducks and bunnies. This will be her room while she's here." Nina informed, bringing them into a room where the walls were covered in duck and bunny wall stickers.
"Honestly—I don't know what she likes. I don't think she knows what she likes. I literally just found out about and got full custody of Miyuki from her severely abusive, now deceased mother, yesterday. I have all the paperwork and Social Service business cards on hand if needed because I just don't know enough offhand." Trunks explained.
"Ah. Her mother is deceased, and Miyuki doesn't seem have your last name. Actually, I see there's no last name listed for her, period. Could I please have her last name?" Nina asked, looking through some files.
"She doesn't have a last name. Miss Kurumi Pom informed me that Miyuki's mother, Daisy, didn't give Miyuki a last name. That's something I have to figure out." Trunks replied.
"What was her mother's full name: first and last?" Nina asked, looking at Trunks.
"Daisy Cota. Umm… C-O-T-A." Trunks answered.
"Let's see if we can figure out where she gave birth. If you can figure out where Miyuki was born, you can get her birth certificate: that's where you'll want to start with that. Hmm… Oh. When is Miyuki's birthday?" Nina asked, looking at a computer.
"December 24th, 2005." Trunks answered without skipping a beat: that one he knew.
"Perfect. Well, I'll check her temperature, her vitals, and look at her back really quick before sending her doctor in. I'm also going to get a hold of Dr. Bayanettea; he was the doctor who took care of Miyuki and Daisy the day of Miyuki's birth. He will explain to you more of what I'm horribly trying to explain to you." Nina explained, getting a thermometer.
"Can you open your mouth for me? I need to put this under your tongue so I can check your temp." Nina asked, holding the thermometer in front of Miyuki.
"Mmmm…" Miyuki made a noise and hid her face in Trunks's shoulder.
"May I? Miyuki, watch. This is all she wants with this." Trunks asked Nina, taking the thermometer; he then showed Miyuki that it wouldn't hurt her by sticking it under his tongue.
"Would you look at that? Dad's not sick." Nina calmly told Miyuki, putting a new cover over the thermometer.
Slowly and hesitantly, Miyuki opened her mouth a little.
After a minute, the thermometer beeped.
"She has a small fever. 99.7. Now, this is going to around your arm; it's going to get tight, but it'll help me see how you're doing. But first, I wanna take your pulse. Could you turn your arm over like this?" Nine explained, wrapping a cuff around Miyuki's upper arm. She then asked, showing Miyuki what she wanted with her arm.
"That's not bad—her pulse is only two points higher than it should be. Oh, and I need to put this on your finger to make sure your oxygen levels are ok. It may feel weird, but it shouldn't hurt." Nina explained, placing a clip on Miyuki's finger. She then started pumping to check Miyuki's blood pressure.
"Mmm!" Miyuki started fussing as soon as the cuff tightened around her arm.
But after a few seconds, there were just tears as Nina removed the cuff.
"Ok… Right now, her blood pressure is fine. Her oxygen levels, on the other hand, are low. You said she's in for a peanut allergy: you found a shell on her?" Nina explained and then asked, watching Trunks.
"Yeah. We were out talking to a family friend; he had delivered peanuts to someone earlier in the day. He offered her a peanut because those and hazelnuts were the only two nuts on her list of allergies not on it. Someone who had watched her previously was walking by with her grandmother; she said Miyuki was indeed allergic to peanuts. But anyway: I set her in her highchair so we could sit down for brunch with the family. She started fussing, repeatedly saying "owie" until she started crying. So, I picked her up and a peanut shell fell out of the bottom of her shirt. And this is what I discovered after that. I'm thinking she is indeed allergic to peanuts. This is just from a shell. I immediately got her out of her outfit, washed the peanut dust off, changed her diaper, and put her back in her pajamas. She only has a pair of pajamas and outfit that fit properly." Trunks explained, lifting the pajama shirt up.
"That's just from a peanut shell, huh? I'm sorry." Nina asked before apologizing to Miyuki when she jerked a little; her back was just a little tender.
"Ok. Please remove all of Miyuki's clothes except her diaper and put this gown on her instead. Dr. Taiya will be in in just a few minutes; she will look at Miyuki's back and come up with a plan. You may turn on the television if you'd like. Depending on how long you're here, you may have a different nurse; my shift ends in half an hour. So, if I don't see you again, try to have a good rest of your day and I hope you feel better." Nina instructed before bidding farewell.
"Ok… Well, this is certainly a great start to the day, isn't it? Lift your arms please." Trunks sighed before going to remove Miyuki's pajamas.
"Mmmm…" Miyuki started fussing as soon as Trunks tried removing her shorts.
"I know, Princess. But we have to do what the nice nurse tells us. Here. Why don't we put this on first and then we can take your shorts off. Ok?" Trunks suggested, holding up a hospital gown. As soon as he got it on her, Miyuki allowed him to take her shorts off.
"Do you wanna see what's on TV? Let's see what we can find." Trunks suggested, turning the TV on after getting Miyuki situated in her bed.
Half an Hour Later:
After a few minutes of channel surfing and nothing seeming to interest Miyuki, something finally did: Pokémon: The Movie.
Knock. Knock.
"Hi. I'm Dr. Taiya; sorry I'm late. Nina told me what was going on. Dad, right?" Dr. Taiya asked after walking in.
Dr. Taiya was a thinner, older woman with shoulder-length graying-brown hair and green eyes.
"Trunks Briefs." Trunks answered, reaching to shake Dr. Taiya's hand.
"So, that must make you, Miyuki. I would like to look at your back. Would you allow me to do that? If you'd like, your daddy can hold you." Dr. Taiya explained to Miyuki with a gentle smile.
"Do you want me to hold you?" Trunks asked, watching Miyuki; she responded by lifting her arms.
"Let's see… Oh, yeah; that's no good. It seems to me that it was a cracked or broken shell because I can see where it first dug in. The shirt she was wearing at the time, must've been just enough to keep the shell moving at a slow, steady pace. Do you know if her back was bleeding any?" Dr. Taiya explained before asking.
"When I looked, I didn't see any blood; I just saw the rash and puss. But that doesn't mean there wasn't any." Trunks answered.
"Ok. So, how long ago was it when you first noticed the rash? How long ago did she start complaining it hurt?" Dr. Taiya asked, looking at Trunks.
"Mmmm… About an hour and fifteen minutes ago." Trunks answered.
"And it was just the rash, correct?" Dr. Taiya asked, watching Miyuki.
"Yes, that's correct. She only started wheezing when we got here roughly forty-five minutes ago." Trunks answered.
"Ok. Your family friend who was delivering peanuts to someone: when did he last have contact with Miyuki?" Dr. Taiya asked, watching Miyuki.
"Almost two hours ago. No. That was the first time. Umm… A little over an hour and a half ago." Trunks answered.
"Ok. You would say from the time your friend left to the time she started complaining was ten to fifteen minutes?" Taiya seriously asked.
"Roughly, yeah." Trunks answered.
"How long did it take you to get ready and get here—as when you first walked through the front doors?" Dr. Taiya asked, clarifying what she meant.
"Ten minutes to get ready to leave. And then another ten minutes to get here." Trunks honestly answered.
"Her case worker was Kurumi Pom, and her physical therapist was Brook Bell. Brook had a special bouncer made for Miyuki. That's part of the reason I took so long getting here: I was talking to them and Dr. Bayanettea. The list of allergies you received with that bouncer was incomplete. It fell into the box with the bouncer and other goodies. Brook didn't realize it until after she sent it out. They faxed over that list: after I get done entering everything into our system, I will give you the papers. You may also get a copy from Kurumi when you see her again." Dr. Taiya explained to Trunks.
"Ok." Trunks sighed, looking at the ceiling.
"Ok. So, all that's settled. Now, we get to the here and now. And I forgot to ask: was it just a shell or an entire peanut?" Dr. Taiya asked, watching Trunks.
"Hold on." Trunks replied, pulling out a plastic baggy with the peanut that fell out of Miyuki's shirt.
"Oh, you have it on you. That's even better. I wish more parents were like you in this aspect. You wouldn't believe how many I've delt with who just dropped the thing their child was allergic to and not even look at it. I mean, yes, I understand that you're more concerned about your child, but it'd be nice to know what we're dealing with. Ok…" Dr. Taiya calmly explained, taking the peanut before examining it.
"So, here's the deal: I'm probably going to be the meanest person ever, but she's going to have to stay here for a few hours. Of course, you're welcome to stay—and if you have family; they can always come visit. This peanut showed me that, yes, she leaned back on it, and it cracked a little down the side. However, this chipped part here; this is the reason for her reaction. A simple peanut shell should not have this kind of reaction. Yes, a simply nasty rash, but not one of this severity—unless, of course, she's sticking it in her mouth and sucking on it. But that would most likely be much worse than it is now. With that said, this sharp put cut into her skin—and it was deep enough to draw some blood, allowing access to the peanut's proteins into her bloodstream."
"Thank you for bringing her in despite her symptoms not being terrible at first. I've had people bring their children in at Death's door because their child's symptoms just started as a rash. They figured they'd just give them some lotion or children's allergy pills. If you child is allergic to something, and you know it, bring them in if they've come in contact with whatever that something is—even if they just have rash. Because nine times out of ten, the symptoms worsen over time."
"So, I know Nina took her temperature and vitals, but I'm going to take them again. And then, after that, because I can tell she's slightly dehydrated, I would like to hook her up to an IV to get her rehydrated. Then also, through that IV, I will administer two or three small doses of epinephrine to combat the peanut allergy. She's much too little and young to have a regular dose. I also want to get a blood and urine sample from her because that will tell me how much epinephrine she needs—which will give us a better estimated time for how long you'll be here. Right now, we're looking at about two hours. But I won't know for sure until I get her blood and urine test. I'm also going to order a chest X-ray because sometime, very rarely, some people who suffer from anaphylaxis can develop bronchial infections or pneumonia. It's procedure here. Also, Kurumi asked me to run a chest X-ray and some other simple tests: she wants to confirm or deny whether or not Miyuki has asthma. And finally, according to her file and Dr. Bayanettea, Miyuki has not had any of her vaccines. Ultimately, you can deny any of this treatment and walk out this door right now. But I wouldn't recommend it. Just as you can deny treatment, you can deny the vaccines. But again, it's something I would recommend against." Dr. Taiya calmly and slowly explained to Trunks, taking breaths here and there.
Meanwhile, Trunks looked as if he was about to fall over with all this information piling up and up.
"Just what does she need for vaccinations?" Trunks asked, rubbing his brow.
"All of them." Dr. Taiya answered, causing Trunks to sigh and shake his head.
"Da?" Miyuki asked, confused, tilting her head back, trying to look at him.
"Everything's going to be ok, Baby." Trunks gently told Miyuki.
"I know she's still in diapers, but could you get her to use the bathroom? I need her to pee in this cup. I will get her a water bottle in case she can't go. I got her history from Kurumi: if you need help, you can ask any female nurse—or if you know someone you think she'll trust." Dr. Taiya explained after asking, standing up.
"I'll see if my mom can make it over. Can she have stuffed animals here?" Trunks replied before asking.
"Whatever helps her feel comfortable. I'll be back in a few minutes with a water bottle." Dr. Taiya replied with a smile before heading out.
"Now, I have to call Grandma." Trunks sighed, pulling out his communicator after unmuting the TV for Miyuki.
"What's going on? How is Miyuki?" Bulma asked as soon as she picked up—after not even a full ring.
"Have you just been sitting by your communicator?" Trunks asked, watching his mother.
"No. I just happened to be walking by." Bulma lied.
"Yes. She's been sitting at the kitchen table, tapping her fingers and foot, waiting for you to hopefully call or walk through the door." Vegeta ratted Bulma out.
"Traitor. You're just as bad; you've been doing nothing but pacing back and forth. There is now a trench in the backyard." Bulma argued.
"What's going on with Miyuki?" Vegeta asked, using Miyuki's name instead of "girl" or "child."
"About that. We're going to be here awhile." Trunks slowly started.
"What? Why?" Bulma asked, concerned.
"How long?" Vegeta asked, watching Trunks and Miyuki—who was zoned into Pokémon.
"We got here, and she started wheezing—and it's only slowly getting worse. She's seeing a Dr. Taiya; she's pretty nice. She explained that the peanut had a sharp piece that cut into her skin just deep enough to draw some blood and get peanut into her bloodstream. That's why her reactions aren't currently severe but are slowly moving that way. We get to do all sorts of "fun" things, so we don't know how long we'll be here. All Dr. Taiya told me was that we'd for sure be here for two hours. After that—it all depends on medication and how Miyuki's doing then." Trunks explained.
"What's all going to be done? What is she doing?" Bulma asked, concerned.
"Ok. I got her a nice, cold water bottle. Hello. Grandma and Grandpa?" Dr. Taiya started before asking, setting the water bottle on the side table.
"Yes. I'm Bulma Briefs and this is my husband, Vegeta." Bulma answered.
"Nice to meet you. Don't mind me. I don't mean to interrupt; I just need to get another temperature and vitals. Can we pause your show for a few minutes?" Dr. Taiya explained before asking Miyuki.
Miyuki looked from the TV to Dr. Taiya while Trunks muted the TV.
"Now, I hear you're not a fan of this thermometer, so I brought my special one. This one I just swipe over your forehead—just like this. And we're now at 99.9. Now, I check your pulse, oxygen, blood pressure, and breathing. I know you don't like the cuff, but we need to put it on." Dr. Taiya calmly told Miyuki, carefully wrapping the cuff around her arm.
"Hey, Mom; can you do me a favor?" Trunks asked, moving to a chair where Miyuki could see him.
"What is it?" Bulma asked right away.
"Among other things, Dr. Taiya wants a urine sample; she needs Miyuki to pee into a cup. I was wondering if you could come here and help with that because I don't think Miyuki will be willing to have someone she doesn't know help her with that." Trunks explained, watching Miyuki.
"Yeah, I can do that. I should see you within half an hour." Bulma replied with a soft smile.
"Screw that; I'll get us there within seconds." Vegeta determinedly declared.
"Ok. We're in room 12A. And Mom; could you bring Miyuki's teddy bear thing?" Trunks asked, looking at Bulma.
"Yeah, I can grab it quickly. Where is it?" Bulma asked after agreeing.
"It should be on my bed yet." Trunks answered.
"Ok. We'll see you in just a little bit." Bulma told Trunks before hanging up.
"Grandma and Grandpa are coming." Trunks told Miyuki as Dr. Taiya removed the cuff.
"Ok. Her pulse and blood pressure are the same as they were before. Her oxygen levels have dropped three points. She's started coughing up a storm, so I don't think I'll be able to check her lungs. So, I'm going to start getting her IV ready—and a lab technician will be in in just a little bit for blood work. I'm also adding an oxygen mask for her." Dr. Taiya explained, walking to a locked cabinet; she then pulled out several differing things—including a decent-sized needle.
"Excuse me, but there is a Mr. and Mrs. Briefs in the waiting room; they say they're here for Miyuki." The receptionist from earlier informed Trunks and Dr. Taiya after knocking on the door.
"You can let them in; they're Miyuki's grandparents." Dr. Taiya replied, getting everything set up.
With that, the receptionist left the room.
"Ok, Miyuki—it's time for the not-so-fun part." Dr. Taiya spoke, setting things on her desk.
Knock. Knock.
"You called for bloodwork and vaccines?" A lady with a cart calmly asked, walking in.
"Perfect timing. This is Gina; she's one of our best: gets everything with one poke." Dr. Taiya introduced a heavier set woman with long, dark brown nape-length hair and brown eyes.
"Hello." Gina greeted with a smile.
"I will be taking care of her IV, vaccines, and Gina will be doing bloodwork. Mr. Briefs: because of her history, I understand this is a lot to ask because it's a difficult task. But could you please firmly hold Miyuki so she doesn't move or struggle too much. That would be much appreciated." Dr. Taiya calmly told Trunks, getting everything around.
"Mmm!" Miyuki cried as soon as she saw the needles.
"It's ok, Baby. I know they're scary, but those are going to help you." Trunks tried soothing Miyuki, lifting her into his arms.
"No, Ma!" Miyuki cried, trying to turn so she could hide in Trunks's shoulders.
"No, Ma?" Gina asked, confused as Trunks helped Miyuki turn over so she could face him.
"I just found out about and got full custody of Miyuki yesterday from Kurumi Pom of Child Services. My family, friends, and I were informed that Miyuki's mother, Daisy, was severely abusive in every way imaginable; she was also heavily on drugs." Trunks explained, rubbing Miyuki's back.
"And with her reaction; it's quite possible that her mother stuck Miyuki with needles and drugged her. That just made this ten times harder." Dr. Taiya added, watching Miyuki shake like a leaf.
"What's going on?" Bulma asked while Vegeta demanded after the receptionist let them in.
"Mom, Dad: this is Dr. Taiya and that's Gina. Dr. Taiya, Gina: these are my parents, Bulma and Vegeta. Gina is here for bloodwork and Dr. Taiya needs to place an IV in Miyuki to rehydrate her. However, as soon as she saw the needles, Miyuki—well, this is what we have. She also has to have all her shots. So, it's probably not going to be a good day." Trunks introduced everyone before explaining.
"Miyuki, can you turn around and let us help you? I know you're scared, but I promise you; this will help you. I also promise that it won't hurt forever." Dr. Taiya gently explained, pulling her chair over.
Miyuki only clung to Trunks even more.
"Oh. Sweetheart, no; we only want to help you. We're not going to take you away from your daddy: you're going to stay right where you are—in your daddy's lap. He's going to hold you in his arms; he's going to make sure you're safe." Dr. Taiya gently but firmly explained once she realized Miyuki wasn't just afraid of the needles. She was afraid of being taken away from the one person she trusts and feels safe with.
"Miyuki—Grandma and Grandpa are here as well. Remember? They won't let anyone hurt you—in ways you shouldn't be hurt anymore." Trunks explained, having to add the end because he knew she would scream and cry once the needles pierced her skin.
She did not let go, but Miyuki pulled away a little.
"I'm going to be right here; I'm not leaving you." Trunks promised, looking Miyuki in the eyes; he noticed something with her left eye.
Slowly, Miyuki released her grip and let Trunks turn her around.
"Let's see if we can find some good veins so that we only have to poke once—well, two pokes for now." Dr. Taiya told Miyuki, carefully taking her left arm and felt around; she did the same with the right arm.
"Ok… I have one good vein for the IV in her left arm. There are none in her right arm. Sorry. She does have veins in both arms, but I am unable to see them right now. There are tools we can use to help find better veins deeper in but may require a few different pokes to just get one. I need the vein in her left arm. Gina, you're going to have to get bloodwork from her right hand; that has a few good veins for that. So, if you could use a smaller needle; that'd be perfect." Dr. Taiya instructed.
"How many vials do I need?" Gina asked.
"Three." Dr. Taiya answered.
"Before you start—before I forget: I have a question." Trunks spoke up.
"What is it?" Dr. Taiya calmly asked, watching Trunks, looking for the perfect-sized needle.
"When I got her pulled away—before I turned her around, I noticed there was something up with her left eye. Maybe it's just me, but it seems duller than the other. I was just wondering if you could tell me what it was—or if I'm just paranoid." Trunks explained his question.
"I'm not an optometrist, but I can take a look. I'll have to do it later though because I can't afford to lose this vein. So, we'll get this done and over with, let her eyes dry naturally, and I'll take a look. Yes, you can wipe tears away, but you can't very well wipe her eyeballs. She's pretty tiny—but that doesn't mean she's not a strong struggler. The vein I need, is here. Trunks, I need you to firmly hold her close with one arm across her upper arms—a few inches below her shoulders. Your other arm, I need to be around her lower waist/hips. Miyuki, can you move your arounds around?" Dr. Taiya explained before instructing and then asking Miyuki.
"Yeah—that's what I thought. I'm not trying to offend anyone by asking this, but Trunks: do you and Miyuki trust your parents to help hold her still? The last thing we need is for a needle to break and get stuck in her skin somewhere." Dr. Taiya explained.
"Can this bed hold three fully-grown adults?" Gina asked, watching Dr. Taiya.
"Yes. And yes, I'm sure. It's an adult bed for heavier people. We use these beds for small children as well for situations like this." Dr. Taiya explained.
"So, Trunks?" Dr. Taiya asked, watching Trunks.
"I know I trust them. And as far as I know, Miyuki trusts them; she's let both of them hold her just fine." Trunks replied.
"Perfect. I need you to scoot all way over to this bar. You may need to switch how you have your arms around Miyuki, but you still need to hold her still. Mom/Grandma: I need you to sit next to Trunks with Miyuki on one of your knees and one of Trunks's knees. Your job is to hold her wrists still. Dad/Grandpa: I know it may not be the comfiest, but I need you at the end of the bed, to hold her ankles down so she can't kick around. Is something wrong?" Dr. Taiya instructed and then asked, noticing Miyuki staring past Bulma.
"Oh, that's Miyuki's teddy bear; she came with and is very attached to it." Trunks answered, noticing the teddy bear.
"Ah, I see." Dr. Taiya replied, wiping Miyuki's arm with an alcohol swab while Gina got her hand. Miyuki didn't notice until, without any warning, Gina stuck the needle in to draw blood. She instantly started screaming and crying, pushing back against Trunks and Bulma to try to escape.
"I'm sorry, Miyuki, but here comes another poke." Dr. Taiya warned before slowly sticking the IV in.
Trunks, Bulma, and Vegeta just held on, making sure Miyuki couldn't move.
"It's ok; it's almost over." Trunks promised Miyuki, kissing the top of her head.
"I'm sorry, Sweetie." Bulma apologized, feeling awful; she desperately wanted Miyuki to trust and feel safe with them.
Neither of them noticed Vegeta—who looked furious. He didn't know this child, but he hated this—hated hearing her scream like this. He felt that Miyuki was important and that he needed to protect her more than he's ever needed to protect anyone before.
"Ok. All done." Dr. Taiya and Gina announced.
"Now, we just tape this down so it doesn't move—and you're all set up. You did so good." Dr. Taiya told Miyuki with a small smile as Trunks loosened his grip. At the same time, Bulma and Vegeta released their grips completely and got out of bed.
"Are we doing vaccines now as well?" Gina asked, labeling the vials.
"No, I will be doing those later." Dr. Taiya answered with animosity laced in her tone.
"Is something wrong?" Gina asked, confused.
"Yes, there's something wrong, Gina. You're supposed to warn a child patient before you going to poke them." Dr. Taiya answered, putting the needles in a sharps container.
"She wasn't paying attention. I was always taught it best not to bother with warning a child if they were distracted." Gina defended her actions.
"Gina—that may have been how you did it in East City, but here we warn a child under the age of nine first. Children nine and older you can kind of get away with that because they understand better." Dr. Taiya sternly explained.
"It worked with all the other children I worked with. And hey, I got the blood." Gina replied, annoyed.
"Gina… What? Other children? I'm going to have to talk to your supervisors. That's one of the first things we learn here. And clearly, she's not other children. Gina—please just take the blood to the lab to have it checked. Please just go before Grandpa loses it.
"Mmm." Miyuki made an undetermined noise.
"What's wrong?" Trunks asked, concerned.
"I potty." Miyuki softly spoke, wiggling around.
"Did you already go—or do you have to go?" Trunks asked, gently patting her back when she started coughing.
"Has go." Miyuki answered.
"Thank God because I only have one more diaper. Just hold on." Trunks breathed before calmly telling Miyuki.
"Perfect timing." Dr. Taiya stated, grabbing a sample cup.
"Right. Mom, can you please help me with this? Someone has to hold Miyuki up while the other holds a cup under her." Trunks asked, standing up with Miyuki.
"I'd love to." Bulma happily obliged.
"Ok…" Trunks sighed once they were in the bathroom with the door closed.
"How do you want to do this?" Bulma asked, opening the cup before grabbing a wet wipe.
"How do you want to do this Miyuki? Do you want me to hold you while Grandma cleans you and collects your potty? Or do you want her to hold you while I clean you?" Trunks asked, watching Miyuki.
"Booba." Miyuki answered, pointing to Bulma.
"Well—she knows who you are." Trunks told Bulma with a smile, removing Miyuki's diaper.
"Mmmm!" Miyuki whined, bouncing around; she really, really had to go.
"Yeah. I know, Sweetie. Just hold on a little longer: I need to clean you before you can potty." Bulma gently told Miyuki, cleaning her area.
"Ok. All ready." Bulma announced, grabbing the cup.
As soon as Trunks placed Miyuki over the toilet, she started peeing; Bulma just got enough (a little less than half) by the time Miyuki was done.
"Hopefully this will be enough." Bulma spoke, sealing the cup.
"Nooo! Poo-Poo!" Miyuki cried.
"Ok. Ok." Trunks replied, holding Miyuki over the toilet so she could poop.
"I'll take this to Dr. Taiya and then I'll be right back—if you need me." Bulma told Trunks.
"Ok. That would probably be best; she may receive you better to wipe her than me. Thank you." Trunks replied, concentrating on Miyuki.
Bulma just walked out; she was back within half a minute.
"All done?" Trunks asked, noticing Miyuki wasn't moving; she was just sitting, hovering over the toilet, looking around.
"…Yeah." Miyuki slowly and softly answered, scared.
"Ok. Grandma is going to get you all cleaned up. Then I'll put you in a new diaper. Ok?" Trunks explained, watching Miyuki.
"Yeah." Miyuki softly replied.
"Good girl." Trunks told Miyuki with a smile, flushing the toilet.
Trunks set Miyuki down and held her still so that Bulma could clean her.
"Ok. Come on." Trunks told Miyuki, lifting her into his arms.
"What about her diaper?" Bulma asked, watching Trunks.
"I don't want her lying on the bathroom floor—no matter how clean it is. It'll be easier to put it on her in bed." Trunks replied before walking into the main room.
"The doctor lady said she'd be back in a few minutes; she was going to take the pee to the lab or whatever." Vegeta gruffly told Trunks as soon as he and Bulma came out with Miyuki.
"Ok. Are you ready for your diaper?" Trunks replied before asking Miyuki, laying her in the bed.
"Yeah." Miyuki replied, trying to lift her lower half. She got maybe two inches up—and only for a few seconds before falling back down.
"Ohhh." Miyuki kind of cried, disappointed.
"It's ok, Baby; you'll get there some day. We'll work on it together: you and me, Grandma and Grandpa. And besides: you just did fantastic." Trunks sincerely told Miyuki, setting the diaper on the bed before putting it on her.
"Now, we wait." Trunks sighed, placing Miyuki, so she was laying with her head on the pillow.
That was when he noticed something: Miyuki was struggling to swallow; he immediately pressed the call button.
"Sorry about that. What's going on?" Dr. Taiya asked, rushing in.
"She's having troubles swallowing—like her extra spit." Trunks quickly explained.
"Yes, I see this. Can you open your mouth and stick your tongue out, like this, please?" Dr. Taiya asked, walking over with a medical flashlight and a tongue depressor. She also showed Miyuki what she wanted by opening her mouth and sticking her tongue out.
"Again. It's so good you brought her in when you did. Miyuki, I'm going to put a special mask on you for a little bit, ok? It's going to help you breathe. Then I'm going to give you some very important medication. I actually have the medication with me now. It is a needle, but you won't be able to feel it because I'm going to get the medicine in you a different way. Ok?" Dr. Taiya asked, setting an epinephrine injection on the bedside table.
There was no fuss when Dr. Taiya put the mask on, but Miyuki panicked when she saw the needle.
"Baby, it's ok. The needles going into your tube. It's going to get into your body faster." Trunks calmly told Miyuki, rubbing her hand.
"You're really good with her." Dr. Taiya sincerely told Trunks, injecting the epinephrine into the IV.
"Oh. Umm… Thanks." Trunks replied, unsure of what to say.
"You will get used to everything. Just with what I've seen within the last hour, she trusts you and you're a great father to her. I understand you've only known her a day—maybe not even yet, but you have a connection with her. You will do just fine. And with your parents helping you, you're going to be a fantastic father. I'm sure there will be times you'll feel like you screwed up or something. But in reality, you won't. Mistakes, yes. But you won't screw up. Sorry. I see and work with a lot of new teen or single parents." Dr. Taiya sincerely told Trunks before apologizing.
"But not like me—where the parent didn't know about the child until they were older." Trunks assumed.
"No, I have. It happens more than you think. I've had mothers run off with babies. I've had fathers who kidnapped the baby at birth and the mother was reunited years later. I've had children who grew up with only a mother because the father wanted nothing to do with the child, and then later wanted a relationship—and vice versa. All sorts of reasons. I think Miyuki is the only two-year-old I've had this situation with. I've had plenty of cases where a parent gets the child later in life, but the child is usually between a few months to a year and a half. Or four through sixteen. I've also had a few different orphans. Including me, there are three others who have seen or worked with cases like you and Miyuki; we usually get alphabetical by last name. One gets A-F. Another gets G-O. And I get P-Z. When we get cases like Miyuki's, where a child is brought in with no last name, we usually use go by the guardian's last name. And if a child doesn't have a last name because the guardian doesn't have one—or they have nobody, they're given to whoever's free. Like I said before, I've never delt with a two-year-old, but I do believe one of my colleagues did a few years back. It was a similar case—but that's all I know. Now, can I ask you a question." Dr. Taiya honestly explained before asking.
"Go ahead." Trunks replied.
"I know you've only had her roughly a day, but is it normal for her to pull at her ears—so violently?" Dr. Taiya asked, watching Miyuki pulling at her ears.
"Miyuki, no; don't do that." Trunks told Miyuki as calmly as he could, gently pulling her hands away from her ears.
"Umm… She has pulled on her ears a few times, but not to that severity. But Kurumi told us that her mother, Daisy, had butchered her own ears so that she could look almost human. Miyuki has never seen anyone like her—with ears like what she has. To me, it doesn't matter; I love her ears—and her just the way she is." Trunks answered, patting Miyuki's head.
"We all do." Bulma immediately piped up, making sure everyone knew how she and Vegeta felt.
"Oh. Well—it's been a few years now, but I've seen two boys, a few years older than herself, with cat ears. In fact, they had the same tan ears and Miyuki. But that's all I can tell you: I didn't work with them or anything, but I did see two boys with ears like hers here before." Dr. Taiya replied, stunned; she wasn't aware that Miyuki hadn't seen people like her. Trunks and his parents, sure. But Miyuki?
"Hmm… That's very interesting. Guess I'll have some research to do." Bulma determinedly declared.
"But anyway: onto the next steps for the day. I will come back within an hour to give her her second dose of epinephrine, and we'll go from there with that. Because of her age and size, we have to go slow; we don't want to give her an overdose. So, after about an hour or so of the second dose, we'll see if she's good to go, or if she'll need more. I will check her eyes before I head out to check on my other patients. And then I was thinking—you most likely have to schedule an appointment with a regular pediatrician. Kurumi mentioned that when she came to make sure you had everything you needed for Miyuki, she was going to talk to you about that. However, seeing as you're here, now; she asked me to talk to you about that. Do you have a regular clinic you like to go to? Or does it matter?" Dr. Taiya started explaining before asking.
"Uhhh…" Trunks started, drawing a complete blank.
"We used to take Trunks and his sister to West City Clinic on the north-west side." Bulma spoke up.
"Ok. I'm assuming that's closer to your home." Dr. Taiya spoke to Bulma.
"Yes." Bulma answered.
"Ok. Does anyone have any questions before I move on?" Dr. Taiya asked, looking at Trunks and Bulma and Vegeta.
"We can ask you whatever questions we want?" Bulma asked, shocked.
"Hahaha. Sorry. I'm not laughing at you. I keep forgetting about that confidentiality stuff. I mean, we have it here as well, but I'm assuming since Trunks allowed and wanted you in here for help, I can talk to you. It's if you call or bring her in without Trunks that I'll need written permission. You can ask me anything so long as Trunks is in the room." Dr. Taiya answered with a smile.
"Will we get to know the name of the pediatrician Trunks picks out? I'm assuming Trunks is the one who makes the choice. Or is that your and Miss Kurumi's decision?" Bulma asked, watching Dr. Taiya.
"You knowing the pediatrician's name will be up to Trunks. So, yes; Trunks is the one making the choice. I will look into who is all at the clinic, print out a little of their information and give it to Trunks to make a choice. In saying that: if Trunks wants; you can look through the files and help determine who's best for Miyuki—and Trunks. Speaking of which: Trunks, while I'm here, do you have or want to add any Emergency Contacts for Miyuki?" Dr. Taiya answered before asking.
"How many am I allowed to have?" Trunks asked, watching Dr. Taiya.
"As many as you'd like. Do you need time to think about any of that? You can add or remove Emergency Contacts whenever you want or need. However, they must be at least eighteen years of age." Dr. Taiya answered.
"Well, for now the only people I know of for sure are my mom and dad. I'll have to ask the others if they'd be willing." Trunks answered, thinking about it.
"Ok. How many others do you have in mind?" Dr. Taiya asked, watching Trunks.
"What do Emergency Contacts get to know about our granddaughter?" Vegeta asked, narrowing his eyes.
"Vegeta behave." Bulma scolded.
"It's ok; I've delt with scary guardians or family members like him before. Emergency Contacts, unless Trunks signs the papers allowing others to have that information, don't get any information about her. Say if one the other people Trunks is thinking about making an Emergency Contact were watching her, and she needs medical attention; they would give us why she was there and any information they have on her. In return, they would get what they and the doctor discussed in order to give Trunks the information. The Emergency Contact will also be able to go to the drugstore of Trunks's choosing and pick up Miyuki's prescriptions. Now, in the case of ER visits, an Emergency Contact can bring her in, get in checked in, but cannot go back with her; she will have to go back on her own. However, they're welcome to wait in the waiting room and get updates to give to Trunks. Now, in that case: if we are unable to reach Trunks, we do have forms he can sign in order to give anyone in his and Miyuki's family permission to go back and have all information. As for non-family members, you are only allowed two people for those forms." Dr. Taiya calmly explained.
"Along with Mom and Dad, I have five others. And for the other forms—I don't know. Mom and Dad for sure: I trust them more than anyone with Miyuki. I mean I trust all my family friends and family, but Mom and Dad for family are the only ones who even know about Miyuki. Well, my sister, but she's twelve. Can I have the two other forms as well?" Trunks replied and then asked.
"Of course. So, seven Emergency Contact forms and four permission forms. But if you want me to check Miyuki's eyes, that's all the time I have for questions. I also want to check her vitals again." Dr. Taiya replied, standing up.
She walked over to Miyuki, gently felt her throat before removing the mask.
"Ok. Can you look up, please? Turn your head a little towards me. … Hmm… That is peculiar. I will see if there's any eye doctors available—or when, and Dr. Bayanettea will be in whenever he can. The swelling her throat has already gone down, so unless she sounds like she's struggling to breathe; she shouldn't need the oxygen mask. But if she does, just put the mask on her and push this button. Her fever went down to 98.7. Her oxygen levels and pulse are where we want them as well. Her BP, on the other hand: that's still a little low. But she looks like she's headed in the right direction. I'll be back within forty minutes or so." Dr. Taiya hurriedly informed Trunks after looking at Miyuki's eyes.
"So, now what?" Vegeta asked, annoyed.
"We wait; that's all we can do." Trunks answered, rubbing Miyuki's forehead.
"Izzy, pease?" Miyuki softly asked, watching Bulma.
"Izzy?" Vegeta asked, confused.
"Izzy—is that your stuffed animal's name?" Bulma asked, holding the bear up.
"Izzy, pease?" Miyuki softly repeated, this time, holding her arms up as best as she could.
"Here you go, Sweetie." Bulma told Miyuki, handing her "Izzy."
"Tank you, Booba." Miyuki softly spoke.
"You're welcome. What? What are you smirking at?" Bulma replied with a smile—until she saw her husband. Vegeta was standing, leaning against a wall, smirking—trying not to laugh out loud.
"Nothing." Vegeta answered, looking down, still smirking.
"Miyuki, do you know who he is?" Trunks asked, pointing to Vegeta.
It took a few seconds, but Miyuki spoke up: "Geeta?" It was more of a nervous question—afraid of being wrong and getting hit.
"Yes. However, you can't be calling them "Booba" or "Geeta." You have to call them "Grandma" and "Grandma—"or something like that. Ok?" Trunks gently told Miyuki—who just stared back at him, confusion shining in her eyes.
"It's ok. We'll figure something out." Trunks told Miyuki with a smile.
Knock. Knock.
Bulma was going to say something when someone knocked on the door.
"Come in." Trunks called.
"Hello." An older male and female doctor greeted, walking in.
The male doctor had silver nape-length hair and blue eyes.
The female doctor had graying dark purple hair and blue eyes.
"Hi." Trunks replied, watching the doctors while Vegeta and Bulma stood there.
"Well—I certainly didn't think I'd ever see you again. You must be Dad—Trunks Briefs, right? I'm Dr. Bayanettea; I was the one who delivered Miyuki. Dr. Taiya tells me she was recently taken in by Child Services and given to you yesterday—and that Kurumi was her case worker. Well, technically, she still is until she makes sure everything is all set up and everything. Kurumi was my assistant here many, many years ago. This is Dr. Kimi; she's a children's optometrist. She works with a lot of my patients or children I've delivered; she's here for that and because Dr. Taiya mentioned there was something odd with her eyes." Dr. Bayanettea introduced and explained who he and Dr. Kimi were.
"Nice to meet you. Yes, my name is Trunks Briefs. I was told they tested my DNA, and it came back as a one hundred percent match to Miyuki." Trunks replied.
"Yes, I know. Kurumi let me know what was going on—let me know they were trying to locate her father. Your DNA matched Miyuki's all four tests. They're very thorough people. Who are your friends?" Dr. Bayanettea explained before asking.
"These are my parents, Bulma and Vegeta Briefs." Trunks answered.
"Ah. I'm guessing you took your wife's last name. Sorry. I knew your father; I worked with him once or twice when the hospital needed his assistance." Dr. Bayanettea spoke, watching Bulma.
"Now, I know why your name sounded familiar: I think Dad mentioned something. Yes, Vegeta took my last name: he had no choice, seeing as he didn't have a last name of his own. I guess it's a Saiyan thing." Bulma replied.
"Ah. Saiyan: them I've heard of. Until I met Daisy, I had never heard of Nekodian. I'm guessing the Saiyan DNA is where the ape tail came from. What happened with that?" Dr. Bayanettea announced before asking.
"Yesterday, when we first met, half of her tail had been cut off or something along those lines. Last night, before I went to bed, I pulled the rest of it off. It's for everyone's safety. Saiyans are born with ape tails, and if there's a full moon, we change into giant monstrous apes with no control if we look at the moon. Without our tails, that doesn't happen. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but we were informed that Daisy gave birth in a car." Trunks explained before letting Dr. Bayanettea.
"I see. I wish I would've known that then; I would've the tail then. But anyway: yes, she gave birth in the front of a car—which was mistake one. Well—all the other things before and during her pregnancy were mistakes one-six. I'll give her credit for trying to get to the hospital. However, she should've been in the back—especially given the speed the driver was going. They passed me about five minutes before they ran a red light and were hit by a truck—on Daisy's side. The next mistake was getting out of the vehicle and jumping up and down to try to force Miyuki out. I was on my way to work when I caught up to them. An officer made her wait in the car for an ambulance. However, I knew an ambulance wouldn't make it in time. I showed the officer my credentials and to Daisy I went. Miyuki was out—five minutes after I got there. I went to get my clamp and medical scissors to cut the umbilical cord. But before I could even turn, Daisy had let her drunk-driving friend cut it with a broken piece of mirror. The ambulance came and they everyone involved was taken to the hospital. Miyuki is a little fighter; she shouldn't have survived that day. But against all odds; she made it. Though, I guess she's not human. I watched over them and made sure all was good until Daisy left with Miyuki—and I never saw them again." Dr. Bayanettea explained, shocking Trunks, Bulma, and pissing Vegeta off.
"What happened to Daisy's friends?" Trunks managed to ask.
"Well… If memory serves me; I believe there were five in the car. Two of the passengers in the back died from injuries they sustained. The other was paralyzed and is in an institution. The driver was sentenced to life in prison for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, manslaughter of four people, and messing with a medical procedure. Daisy was supposed to be taken to jail for a month or two, then rehab so that she could get Miyuki back. However, she escaped with the help of a rogue doctor who has been arrested." Dr. Bayanettea explained.
"I wonder how long Daisy had been labor with Miyuki for her to be born that quickly." Bulma wondered out loud.
"From the place they were zip-lining until that crash, Daisy told me about half an hour." Dr. Bayanettea answered.
"What? Really? I remember when I gave birth to Trunks; I was in labor for eighteen hours. I was in labor with Bulla for eight hours." Bulma declared, stunned.
"You just have the two children?" Dr. Bayanettea asked, watching Bulma.
"That's correct." Bulma replied.
"It gets easier and goes faster with each birth." Dr. Bayanettea calmly stated.
"What are you saying? Trunks has more kids out there?" Vegeta demanded.
"No, he doesn't. But Miyuki has three older brothers. Daisy never mentioned that to you when you were dating? She said she dated you—Miyuki's father for a short time." Dr. Bayanettea explained before asking.
"Yes—we dated for a little bit, but no; she never mentioned having kids. And I never saw any with her or her place." Trunks replied, shocked.
"Ah, I see. Yes, she has three boys. I first met Daisy when she was thirteen and a half when police had found her—after searching for her for four and a half years; she had been kidnapped when she was nine. Her parents never gave up looking for her. She was roughly four months pregnant with Taiyo. She had and kept him when she was fourteen; her parents were all on board for helping take care of him. The guy who kidnapped and impregnated her was never found—and she won't tell anyone who he was or is. I continued to see and deliver her children as the years went by. Up until she had her third child, she was always a good girl. Whatever that man did to her, she became what he wanted her to be. She was sixteen when she had Hinata. Both Taiyo and Hinata are half Nekodian and half human. As far as I know, Taiyo doesn't know his biological father, but Hinata's biological father—when he got custody of Hinata; he adopted Taiyo. They were four and six. She then had her third son, Kazuyuki when she was eighteen. His father got custody of him when he was about five months old because he's a Juptarian—the lead Juptarian tracker. He also got because during her pregnancy, Daisy was claiming he raped her. A few months after Kazuyuki was born, she unknowingly admitted to the police that she was lying because she wanted his money. She was going to then move onto someone new. She was twenty-two when she had Miyuki. I didn't know what, but I didn't have a good feeling about any of this—and she refused to tell me who you were. So, I called Social Services: they were supposed to take Miyuki into their care once she was well enough. That night, when I delivered Miyuki, I knew she was on drugs and whatever, but I never would've thought she'd ever abuse Miyuki." Dr. Bayanettea explained, sighing in frustration.
"The boys were never beaten? Why didn't she keep them then? Why did their fathers get them?" Trunks asked, becoming agitated.
"Da." Miyuki softly spoke, touching his hand.
"Hmm… Despite what's happened to her, she's a sweet little girl. No, there was no records of abuse towards any of the boys. Clearly, she never had a chance to abuse Kazuyuki because his dad got him right away. Taiyo and Hinata's dad got them because he had found out she was pregnant with Hinata. It took him a long while to figure out where she was, but he found her and fought for custody rights—at least fifty/fifty custody. He got full custody of Hinata and adopted Taiyo because they were neglected. Taiyo—who was only six, was taking care of not only himself, but also Hinata—and had been since he was three or four. He'd make them food, changed his diapers, somehow gave them both baths, and so on, and so forth. He is an incredibly bright kid. Honestly, if I were their mother—and even remotely like her, I'd abuse Taiyo just because of how smart he is. Daisy was smart, but not like Taiyo. He told their dad, me, and the police all the things his mother had done and planned on doing—all the men she was planning on using to get pregnant and then blackmail for child support. Well, that was the claim; she was going to use the money for whatever. All the men on the list had been contacted and warned about what she was planning. There were four men who didn't listen because they were smart and weren't going to fall for her bullshit. I honestly thought one of them was Miyuki's father because your name never popped up anywhere. So, I'm guessing you weren't planned: you were just—at the right place at the right time for her. Bad time and place for you, but… You get the point." Dr. Bayanettea explained.
"So, the older two don't know about the younger two?" Bulma asked, watching Dr. Bayanettea.
"They know about Kazuyuki; their fathers get together for their birthdays, a week or two in the summer, and I think they figure something out for holidays. I'm not sure any of them know about Miyuki." Dr. Bayanettea answered.
"So—ten, eight, six, and two-and-a-half?" Trunks asked, watching Dr. Bayanettea.
"Taiyo just turned eleven in April. Hinata will be nine in August. And Kazuyuki will be seven in November. You know: I was rather surprised when I found out Daisy was zip-lining when she went into labor with Miyuki. It was Christmas Eve, and the snow was awful that day. But then, I found out there was an indoor place. But anyway: as much as I'd love to stay and chat, I have other patients I have to get to. I just came to check on Miyuki, meet you, her eyes and more thing. But I'll get to that in a few minutes. With her eyes: one is fine while the other is kind of dulled, yes? Is it the left eye that's concerning?" Dr. Bayanettea explained before asking.
"Yes." Trunks answered.
"How the hell could you know that?" Vegeta demanded, standing up straight.
"Her brothers all had the same problem; it's genetic from their mother's side. However, it skipped Daisy and went to the kids. We still don't know who on their side had it. This is where Dr. Kimi comes in. Oh, and the boys' fathers try to contact each other to make appointments for around the same time and have lunch or something together for the kids. Hinata and Kazuyuki are still in glasses, but Taiyo no longer needs them; he does, however, wear contacts. We found with the right type of glasses; the eye fixes itself. I don't know much about the issue, but I know there is a surgery that can take care of it. But I'm gonna head out in just a minute and let Dr. Kimi do what she does best. But first things first. Trunks: you were told that Miyuki doesn't have a last name because Daisy didn't give her one, yes?" Dr. Bayanettea explained before getting down to business.
"Yes, that's correct. I'm hoping because of that, it won't take forever to get it changed to our last name." Trunks answered.
"Actually, it won't take long at all. That first week, Daisy was completely out of it because of the drugs and medications we were giving her. When the nurse finally asked what she wanted to name her, Daisy snapped, but said Miyuki and that was it; she would finish all that later. However, before we could get to all that, she left. A different nurse suggested we just put "Cota" as her last name because of Daisy. However, because she's so sporadic, we couldn't do that. Taiyo had her first name because she refused to give us his father's name. Hinata was given his father's last name because, his father showed up and demanded that—and Daisy gave him what he wanted. Taiyo and Hinata legally have the same last name now. And Kazuyuki has both parents' last names: they're hyphened. Now, we come to Miyuki. Her birth certificate and social security card were never finished. And because Daisy has passed; it's up to you to finish it. That's why I'm here. This is her original, unfished birth certificate. I added your name already, but I need your signature, saying you want her last name to be the same as yours." Dr. Bayanettea thoroughly explained.
"That's it? That's all I have to do? I don't have to go to court or anything? Does Kurumi know?" Trunks asked, looking at the forms Dr. Bayanettea handed him.
"That's it. You don't have to do anything except sign the papers. Yes, Kurumi knows; I contacted her as soon as I found out Miyuki was here." Dr. Bayanettea explained.
Trunks didn't hesitate; he signed his name—and he was allowed to finish naming Miyuki. The form said he could even legally change her first name.
Legally, Trunks's daughter is now Miyuki Chaya Briefs.
"Ok. I have to make a copy of this, and then I will try to get it and the social security card to you before you leave. If I don't, I will send it to you in the mail. Also, so their fathers know, I will let Taiyo and Hinata's and Kazuyuki's fathers know about Miyuki. However, I will not give them any of your information. I will contact you with whatever they may want with that information." Dr. Bayanettea firmly told Trunks.
"Ok. Thank you—for everything." Trunks replied.
"Of course. It was nice to meet all of you. Hope your day gets better. Until next time." Dr. Bayanettea replied before bidding farewell.
"Ok. You said she was two-and-a-half?" Dr. Kimi asked, sliding a stool over to Miyuki's bed.
"Yes—two and five months." Trunks answered, watching Miyuki.
As crappy a situation as it was, Trunks was thrilled because Miyuki was now legally a "Briefs." She was officially a "Briefs" when she arrived, but now it was on paper and legal.
"Ok, Sweetie; I'm going to look at your eyes. First: I'm just going to look at them with my eyes alone. Then: I'm going to look using a small flashlight. We'll go from there after all that. Can you look up at me?" Dr. Kimi calmly told Miyuki before asking.
Dr. Kimi looked at Miyuki's right eye for maybe half a minute. However, she studied her left eye for about a good minute and a half or two before getting a light.
"Ok. This is going to be bright, but I'm going to need you to follow my finger with only your eyes; do not move your head. Follow my finger with this eye." Dr. Kimi instructed, pointing to Miyuki's left eye, turning on the light.
The light hit Miyuki's right eye, and she immediately started blinking before rubbing her eye. She tried following Dr. Kimi's finger but had a hard time and started getting frustrated.
"Ok. Now, I want you follow my finger with this eye." Dr. Kimi instructed, pointing to Miyuki's right eye.
The light hit Miyuki's left eye, and she flinched a little, but nothing near as bad as the right. This time, she was able to follow Dr. Kimi's finger just fine.
Dr. Kimi did a few more tests:
She covered each eye and had Miyuki point to what she could see: close up and further away.
She then did the same test but allowed both eyes to be uncovered.
"Ok… Without the proper equipment and eyedrops, there's not a lot I can do right now. What I can tell you is that yes, she's going to need glasses. Yes, I've seen her brothers. And yes, Taiyo no longer has glasses, but contacts for school and reading instead; in a few years, he may not even need contacts anymore. The last time I saw Hinata, we discussed him getting contacts. Kazuyuki still needs glasses, but I think in a few years, he won't need them—or contacts. His eye seems to be fixing itself faster than the others. Now, with Miyuki: I don't know if it's from the abuse or if hers is just more advanced, but I think she'll have to wear glasses for the entirety of her life. I can tell she has some sight, but I think she's mostly blind in her left eye. But again, I won't know one hundred percent until I see her in my office. But the way she reacted to the light being shined in that eye vs. her brothers: they jumped and fussed more. She just flinched a little—and even then: it was barely a flinch. We can discuss contacts for her when she's in double digits, but I don't think she'll be a good candidate for them. I'm not trying to offend anyone." Dr. Kimi explained before becoming apprehensive with Vegeta glaring at her.
"Don't mind him; he's just very proud of being Saiyan—and having no abnormalities because of it. But what he has to remember: Miyuki's only half Saiyan. We really don't know much about Nekodians." Bulma calmly told Dr. Kimi, narrowing her eyes at Vegeta.
"She could be completely blind, and I'd still love her. Blind, deaf, never able to walk, super smart or not—or whatever: I'll still love her no matter what. It's not the greatest news, but it's better than her allergic reaction to peanuts. I just want her to be healthy and happy—and to know and understand that she's loved." Trunks sincerely spoke up, causing Bulma to become emotional again.
"You have a lovely family. If you want, while I'm here, I can get you an appointment set up—with me or Dr. Rachel; she's the other doctor who specializes in Miyuki's condition—here." Dr. Kimi suggested, watching Trunks.
"Umm… Yeah. That'd be great; thanks." Trunks replied.
"My next available spot is in two weeks, on a Wednesday at 11:45 AM. Or three weeks on a Friday at 9:20 AM." Dr. Kimi informed Trunks after looking at her tablet.
"Why did you add an extra week the way you did?" Vegeta demanded, becoming suspicious.
"Vegeta, behave." Bulma scolded.
"But he does have a point. I understand options—but the way you said it. To me it seems like that Wednesday isn't available—which would be fine. I can take that Friday." Trunks added, watching Dr. Kimi.
"No; it's available. I don't know if Dr. Bayanettea knew or not, but Taiyo, Hinata, and Kazuyuki all have appointments at 8:20, 9:55, and 10:20 AM. I wasn't sure if you were ready to meet them or not." Dr. Kimi explained, causing everyone to calm down.
"I know that glasses take a week or so to get in, so the sooner the better; we'll take the Wednesday at 11:45. No, I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet, but whatever happens, happens. Clearly, everything happens for a reason: that's what I believe with Miyuki. No, I didn't want to be a teen father—especially with Daisy. But that's what happened—and I got a miracle." Trunks firmly told Dr. Kimi, repeating what he's told others so many times now.
"Good for you, Trunks. What are the odds you'll even run into them?" Bulma asked, proud of her son.
"Pretty good now that you asked that." Vegeta answered, staring at the ceiling.
"He's right, Mom. Every time someone says something that, something happens." Trunks agreed with his father.
"Ok. You're all set. I look forward to our first, official visit. See you then." Dr. Kimi told Trunks before heading out.
"Dr. Taiya." Dr. Kimi greeted with animosity.
"Dr. Kimi." Dr. Taiya greeted with just as much animosity.
"Is everything ok?" Bulma asked, concerned.
"It's nothing to do with Miyuki or anything. Dr. Kimi is my sister-in-law—and we just don't get along. She's a great doctor, but I think she's a gold digger. But that's personal family business. Dr. Bayanettea wanted me to give you these." Dr. Taiya explained before handing Trunks a yellow folder card and a small bag.
The folder contained Miyuki's birth certificate and social security card.
The bag contained Miyuki's:
· Wrist and ankle bracelet
· First hat
· First blanket
· Another folder containing Miyuki's first baby pictures.
"Dr. Bayanettea thought you may like her first pictures. He takes pictures of every baby he delivers; he likes the memories. They stay in his office. But I think you got right after she was cleaned off and wrapped in a blanket, in the NICU, and the day before she was supposed to be released." Dr. Taiya explained, watching Trunks.
"Thank you." Trunks thanked Dr. Taiya, looking through everything.
"It's not a problem. But it's time to change Miyuki's saline bag and give her next dose of epinephrine. It's also time for her vaccines. I want to get through the flu, pneumonia, meningitis, and tetanus shots. She's been through a lot today. Just when you schedule her appointment with a pediatrician, make sure to get the rest of her shots. I mean, if she does well enough, we may be able to get the others today, but I don't know." Dr. Taiya explained, removing the old saline bag to replace it.
Five Minutes Later:
As soon as Miyuki saw the needles for her injections, she started panicking.
"Miyuki, Baby; this needs to be done. It's going to be ok; I'm right here. Grandma and Grandpa are right there. We're not going to let anything bad happen to you. Ok? You're going to be ok. I promise you." Trunks told Miyuki, rubbing her fingers. He understood that she was scared—that the needles reminded her of her mother. But he also knew this had to be done.
"Where are you going?" Bulma asked, watching Vegeta walk away.
"Can she have food from a fast food place?" Vegeta asked Dr. Taiya.
"Just make sure she's not allergic to anything in the food." Dr. Taiya replied, getting a list of food allergies.
"Yeah." Vegeta replied, taking the list before walking to the door.
Vegeta had to get out there. It took all his strength not to freak out on these people when they put an IV in and took blood out. Now, she was getting four more shots.
"Ok, Miyuki; it's time." Dr. Taiya told Miyuki, rubbing an alcohol swab on Miyuki's thigh.
Miyuki just started wailing as soon as the needle pierced her skin. Although, she stopped and stared at where Vegeta stood. Something had her attention.
"Is everything ok?" Dr. Taiya asked, turning to Vegeta after setting the empty vaccine down.
"Yeah. Someone was behind the door. I'm… Oh, it's just Kakarot." Vegeta answered before going to apologize. However, he stopped when he saw that Goku was standing there, holding his head.
"Goku—what are you doing here?" Bulma asked as Goku walked in.
"Chi-Chi's dad called and canceled—something about a date. Chi-Chi wanted to stop and Miyuki, but you weren't there. Bulla said Miyuki was in the hospital because her back got burned by something." Goku answered, rubbing his head.
"Of course. Her back's not burned; she had an allergic reaction to a peanut." Vegeta told Goku, annoyed.
Dr. Taiya would've asked who he was but decided against it because Miyuki was so distracted. She used that to her advantage to get her pneumonia, meningitis, and tetanus shots done without her noticing.
"Do you think we can get through her chicken pox and measles/mumps shots? Or would you prefer to wait? Dr. Bayanettea found some files from a different clinic that stated that Miyuki had her hep shots." Dr. Taiya asked and then informed, watching Trunks.
"Might as well get them done and over with." Trunks replied just as Vegeta and Goku left.
"Miyuki, look here." Bulma gently called Miyuki, getting her attention. However, she was only able to distract her from the chickenpox shot. Once Dr. Taiya gave Miyuki the final shot for measles/mumps, she started screaming.
"I'm sorry, Sweetie. But it's all done. Now you don't have to get shots for a long time. Do you want to pick your bandaids?" Dr. Taiya asked after apologizing and explaining to Miyuki. She then held the bandaids in front of Miyuki's good eye.
Miyuki showed interest in the sparkly rainbow, blue, and neon purple bandaids.
"You did so good, Baby." Trunks told Miyuki before gently kissing the top of her head.
"You did fantastic—so fantastic, that you should get some rewards. I've got stickers; you can have one per shot. That's six stickers. I'll even throw in a special gold star sticker." Dr. Taiya told Miyuki with a gentle smile, pulling out a small container of stickers.
"Da." Miyuki reached for Trunks.
"You can sit in the bed with her if you'd like. We want children to be comfortable and feel safe. And just knowing her history; she needs all the comfort she can get." Dr. Taiya explained, watching Miyuki sitting there, reaching for Trunks.
Trunks didn't reply; he set the folder and bag on the chair he had been sitting on before giving Miyuki what she wanted.
"Do you wanna pick out some stickers now?" Trunks asked once Miyuki was situated.
"Yeah." Miyuki softly replied, rubbing her eyes.
"Her back is starting to look better now, as well." Dr. Taiya noted, having Trunks turn Miyuki a little.
"Does it still hurt or itch?" Dr. Taiya asked, watching Miyuki; she slowly shook her head, watching the container.
In the end, Miyuki picked her stickers—plus the gold star. She picked:
· Two different stickers with cats
· A sticker with a fairy
· A sticker with a butterfly
· A sticker with a unicorn
· A sparkly rainbow sticker
"Ok. I will be back in an hour to check on her again and see what the next step needs to be." Dr. Taiya informed before walking out to check on other patients.
"I'm sorry, but I think the Pokémon movie is over. Do you wanna see if we can find something else?" Trunks asked, watching Miyuki.
Miyuki didn't answer; she just pointed to the screen: Pokémon the series was on now.
"Pokémon, huh? I didn't expect that." Bulma spoke, watching Miyuki.
"A lot of kids like Pokémon; it's insanely popular. I'm surprised to see the original series on; this played when I was a kid." Trunks stated, watching the television.
Fifteen Minutes Later:
"Can someone open this door?" Trunks, Bulma, and Miyuki, heard Vegeta call from the other side of the door.
"I'm coming." Bulma replied, walking over.
"Jesus… Did you get enough food? Hi, Goku, Gohan." Bulma asked once the door was open; she then greeted, noticing Goku and Gohan.
"It's not all for us. That doctor lady said Miyuki could have outside food." Vegeta answered, walking in.
"Hi, Little Miyuki." Goku enthusiastically greeted with a big smile.
"How are we doing?" Gohan calmly asked.
"Miyuki—do you remember Goku and Gohan? They were at our home yesterday when you moved in, and earlier today. They and their family brought you a lot of stuff that you need. We'll get it all set up when we get home, but you have your very own crib to sleep in. You have your very own highchair to sit in at the table, silverware, bottles and little cups, and so much more." Bulma gently told Miyuki as Vegeta, Goku, and Gohan set things on the counter.
"They're friends, remember." Trunks told Miyuki as she watched Goku and Gohan as best as she could.
"Here. Your WacChicken salad and a tea." Vegeta handed Bulma what she usually ordered from WacDonalds.
"Thanks." Bulma replied, taking what she was given.
"Trunks: two triple pounder burger with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and special sauce, large fries, and a large chocolate shake." Vegeta handed Trunks his food.
"Thank you." Trunks replied, setting his food on the table he pulled in front of him and Miyuki.
"I have no clue what she likes, so I got her a WacChicken sandwich, WacNuggets, a double WacBurger with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and ketchup and a medium fry. I also got her two small shakes: chocolate and vanilla." Vegeta explained, setting food for Miyuki in front of them on the table.
"Can you tell Grandpa thank you?" Trunks asked Miyuki, lifting her into a better sitting position.
"Tank you." Miyuki softly thanked.
"You're welcome." Vegeta replied, looking away.
"So, how are we doing?" Gohan asked as he and Goku stood there, eating their food: Goku got an entire meal while Gohan only got some fries.
"Umm… Well, she had a severe allergic reaction to a peanut shell that Yamcha dropped down the back of her shirt. It's unclear whether or not if it was intentional or accidental. It's a long story. Simply put: because it wasn't on the list of allergies, he didn't believe she was allergic like we were told by a previous babysitter or whoever. We found out the list was incomplete. But anyway: the peanut shell cut into her skin a little, causing the severity of the reaction. Otherwise, it should've just been a rash. But we had the severe rash that was red, itchy, painful, and had sores. We got here, and she started wheezing and then her throat started swelling up. But we got epinephrine in her system, and everything's starting to go away. She had bloodwork and all her shots, and we found out she's basically blind in her left eye, but she'll get a special pair of glasses to fix that. Oh, and we found out that she has three older brothers." Trunks explained, watching Miyuki slowly reach for a fry, but stop and pull her hand back.
"No, it's ok; those are for you. This is all for you. Except for these: these are mine." Trunks calmly told Miyuki, separating his food from hers before handing her squishy fry.
"You have three sons out there somewhere?" Goku asked, shocked.
"No, he doesn't!" Bulma exclaimed, having a panic attack.
"Mom, relax. Breathe. No, I don't have three sons out there. Miyuki has three older brothers from the same mother, but different fathers. None of the boys have the same fathers either, but the second son's father adopted the oldest one because his father is unknown. And that's a different story for a different day." Trunks explained, making sure Goku and Gohan knew he didn't want Miyuki hearing any of that conversation.
"Jeez. Well, at least she's safe and well. Is she going to have to spend the night?" Gohan asked, watching Trunks and Miyuki.
"We're not sure. I hope not, but whatever helps; I won't argue what doctors say. Dr. Taiya just gave Miyuki her second dose of epinephrine a little bit ago; she said we'll go from there." Trunks calmly answered.
"Ah. Is there anything else?" Gohan replied and then asked, noticing something in Trunks's eyes.
"I'm not sure. Umm… Would you two, Chi-Chi, and Videl be willing to be Emergency Contacts? I still have to ask Piccolo and Tian, but for now, I wanted to ask you as well." Trunks asked and explained." Watching Gohan and Goku.
"Well, Videl and I would be honored. I'm sure Mom would love that as well—but I'd still ask them. Yes, I can ask Videl and Mom." Gohan replied with a smile; he was honored Trunks would ask him to be an Emergency Contact.
"Thank you." Trunks replied.
"What's an Emergency Contact?" Goku asked, confused.
"It makes it so someone can call you in case something happens to Miyuki. For instance: if she's in the hospital or at school; you can pick her up." Bulma explained, watching Goku.
"Are you sure you want this idiot being an Emergency Contact?" Vegeta asked, annoyed.
"I trust Goku; he was always there for me when I was younger just as much as you, Mom, and everyone else." Trunks sincerely replied.
"I'm thrilled you'd choose me for something like that." Goku replied with a smile.
"Mmm…" Miyuki made a noise, trying to reach for her nuggets.
"Here you go." Trunks handed Miyuki a nugget.
Two & A Half Hours Later:
"Are you ready to go home?" Dr. Taiya asked, walking into the room, not realizing Miyuki had fallen asleep.
"I think we are—as long as it's ok." Trunks replied, holding to Miyuki.
"Ok. I've packed Miyuki's pajamas in a plastic baggy; please don't put these on her again until they're cleaned; they could still have peanut residue on them. I've sent a prescription of special lotion for her back; rub it in twice a day for ten days—even after the rash is gone. That's just to make sure it for sure stays away. Just squirt a small amount in the center of her back and rub up and down. You also asked for a diaper rash cream, so I sent that in as well. And I understand that she only has one outfit that fits. We have a donation center up on the second floor: people bring toys, books, shoes, clothes, whatever. It's usually for the less fortunate, but I found a few outfits that would fit Miyuki: Dr. Bayanettea said you may pick one for her. So, I will get her unhooked and then get her discharge papers while you get her changed and dressed. I also got her an extra diaper if needed." Dr. Taiya explained, setting the clothes on the end of the bed.
"Thank you." Trunks replied, carefully turning Miyuki around.
"Mmm…" Miyuki moaned, stretching a little.
"It's ok. I'm just going to remove your IV so you can go home." Dr. Taiya gently told Miyuki, removing the tape from her arm.
"Mmm! Wahhh ahhh hahaha! Miyuki started crying as soon as Dr. Taiya removed the IV.
"Oh, Baby; it's ok. It's all over." Trunks calmly told Miyuki, rocking her as Dr. Taiya placed a bandaid on her arm.
"I'll be back in a few minutes with her discharge papers." Dr. Taiya told Trunks before leaving.
"Let's see… We have a pretty pink dress, a pink and white shirt with a blue jean skirt, and a purple shirt with a blue jean skirt overalls decorated with butterflies." Bulma looked through the clothes.
"Flutterbys?" Miyuki almost inaudibly asked into Trunks's chest.
"Butterflies, it is." Trunks replied with a smile, lifting Miyuki.
"But first: I'm going to check your diaper." Trunks added, laying Miyuki on the bed.
Miyuki didn't reply; she just patiently laid there, looking at the ceiling and playing with her hands.
"No offense, but for Miyuki's sake, could you two turn around?" Trunks asked, looking from Miyuki to Goku and Gohan after noticing how uncomfortable Miyuki looked.
"We'll wait outside. Come on, Dad." Gohan calmly replied, dragging his dad out of the room.
"You too, Dad; please just turn around." Trunks told Vegeta, getting ready to remove Miyuki's diaper. Vegeta did what he was asked, turning around without a fuss—but only because he knew what Miyuki went through.
"Trunks?" Bulma asked as he changed Miyuki.
"Yeah?" Trunks asked in return.
"I'm not questioning your decision as to what you name your child, but why three names?" Bulma asked, watching Trunks.
"Not going to ask why I didn't change her name completely?" Trunks asked, slightly confused.
"No. Why would I? Why would you?" Bulma asked, concerned.
"Sorry. I just heard someone talking out in the hall earlier while you, Dad, Goku, and Gohan went out for half an hour. They wondered why, since I didn't get a choice, I didn't change her name—especially since her birth certificate was incomplete. It was too late—and I knew it, but I started thinking about you and Dad. Did either of you actually like the name because Daisy is the one who named her."
"Stop. Just stop right there. Your father and I love Miyuki and her name just the way they are. It's your choice—just as it would've been your choice to change her name. And we would've loved it no matter what. However, if you had changed her first name, I would've kicked your butt. Miyuki is such a pretty name—and I don't know if her mother knew or not, but "Miyuki" means "beautiful snow." She is an adorable little girl, who I'm sure will grow into a beautiful young girl, into a beautiful young woman. Trunks: you really did help make an adorable little girl—even if it's not the way you planned. But now that I got completely off track. If you changed her name I'd kick your butt because that's her name: that's what she knows." Trunks started explaining, only to be interrupted by Bulma sincerely but firmly telling him.
"Thanks. And yes, I agree; I don't want to confuse her more than she probably already is. She's already had several major changes—and there's going to be plenty more to come. She didn't need a complete name change. Nope, we've just added on. And to answer your question: a few years back, I learned that in some cultures, people have three names: first, middle, and last. It's something that I had been thinking about since I knew I wanted to at least get Briefs as her last name. But it became more real when I was told her birth certificate wasn't complete and that I could legally name her whatever. I keep her first name, and obviously add our last name. Her middle name, "Chaya," is to represent our Saiyan culture. I had to think of different names but came upon "Chaya" this morning after looking through something with names written in it. "Chaya" just stood out. Yes, it's for Saiyan culture, but I also did it because of Dad: I know how much our culture means to him—and how much he wanted a child with a Saiyan name. I know she's not your daughter, but she is your granddaughter—so, I hope you'll accept this." Trunks explained, causing Bulma to start crying.
"I'll be outside." Vegeta gruffly informed, walking out.
Bulma just chuckled once he was out of the room.
"As hard as he tries; your father is really a big softy. I don't think you realize just how happy you've made him. I really am so proud of you." Bulma told Trunks as he finished dressing Miyuki.
"Thank you." Trunks happily replied, lifting Miyuki into his arms…
Notes:
Chaya is also known as "Tree Spinach."
