Chapter IX. First Year

Adrasteia slowly came back to herself.
All the noises around her were echoing painfully in her head – from the light breathing and slow steady heartbeat not too far away, to the kettle two rooms away, passing by the birds and other creature in the garden and forest around them.
This was quite familiar, and the training exercise every young daiyoukai learned as a pup were quickly coming back – the creature becoming but a buzz in the distance, the kettle's scream a simple whisper, as she focus to the familiar heart-beat.

Mind catching up with her body, she jerked up, eyes wide, realizing that the familiar soul of her Storm really was there, heart as slow as any daiyoukai ever had…
His face wasn't the same she noted – the clearly Chinese man was now of mixed-blood, hair still as dark and straight, tied in his back like usual, but eyes now a dark lavender, startling in their own way, though they weren't the sparking jewels they'd been before.
"Ryu… How…" she stopped the question, having already realized the answer as her senses were coming back to her "You've ascended?"

"I did." the dragon agreed with a smile "I wasn't too far anyway…"
"And you'd gathered enough power to ascend as a Second Circle deity." she realized, eyes widening
"Indeed. Barely, but with a bit of Luck." he winked, making her laugh
Of course he was going to be a god of luck!

"Anyway, convincing her to send me here wasn't too hard," he explained "she rather like you, and this world needs all the help we can provide." a grand salutation "I am Jade Lung, son of the Honorable Fú Xing, god of Luck and Fortune, member of the Chinese Celestial Bureaucracy. Well met."
"Well met indeed, Jade." Adra smiled "I'm…"
"Adrasteia Potter-Black, Xiao Tian, of course I know!" the dragon teased "After all, my mother is an Irish witch, and who in the area hasn't heard of the famous Girl-Who-lived?"
"How come we did meet earlier?" Adra wondered, face crunching up at the annoying title the press had given her

"Well, I was given work in Asia to help with your task." Ryu – or rather, Adra corrected herself mentally, Jade "The Celestial Bureaucratie and the Shinto pantheon are quite insular."
"True I've only met… Well, you father, from the area."
"Truly? How did this happen?" the half-blood wondered
"Poker night."

"Ah, of course." he laughed "I can't believe he didn't tell me." waving the comment away he explained "I'm one of the very rare half-blood from Asia, since, like I said, they've become so insular they rarely head in the mortal world, so I've been working on encouraging more of them to head back out..."
"Like Pyxis had all but nearly achieved with the Celts by the time I was born." Adra understood easily, before smiling fondly at the daiyoukai that had ascended just to follow her "Thank you, Ryu."
"Always, Xiao Tian."
He became more serious "You really shouldn't have done something as dangerous as Atavism alone, stubborn child." he berated her softly "I've informed your brother that I was taking care of you, but you've been sleeping it off for nearly a week."
"A week? It only lasted a few hours for Yuusuke!"

"Back in Shangri La, not it this world where most preternatural creatures are so tightly tied to the Dream Worlds!"
"Oh."
Jade rolled his eyes at the dumb-founded realization, and sat on her bed "Anyway, like I said I've been doing some groundwork for you, and as such, I'm moving to Britain come September. Now that we've found each other, I'm only one call or message away with Chaos Game, so think before doing anything rash." he teased
"And what's a Chinese half-blood going to do in Britain?" she wondered, genuinely curious
"Business of course!"
"You hate business!"

"Of course I do," he easily agreed "which is why I'm only the figure head, since thanks to my mother I've got a well established identity in the mortal world… As for the business, it's mainly with the Norse, and their realms." he waved his hands "You know, bartering our local ingredients or delicacies against their own… Turns out, to make the Bureaucracy move, I only had to talk to their stomach."
He was playing it up a bit she'd realize as he talked more about the Lung House of Exotic Luxuries – but not that much. Most gods, higher or lower, in the Chinese pantheon, were more interested in the pleasures they could find in their eternal life, and battling boredom day by day – as such Jade just had to remind them that boredom could be aleviated by opening up their borders again, and new pleasures, from delicacies to strange items, could be found not only among other pantheons, but also in the mortal world.

The mortal world – they could easily access, and he already had two other stores opened in Asia – but when Asgard and the Celt had started to move a bit, the newest old One had known he must take advantage of the situation.
All in all, just like he'd said – the Bureaucracy was well on its way to remember its role all on its own, all thanks to a few store, and three new half-bloods had been born since Jade had opened his stores. Adrasteia was rather impressed with her Storm.

¤.¤.¤

They'd spent the day just talking about what they'd done in their new life with each other – and by the evening, it was with one more half-blood in tow that she arrived back home. Carter – had been growing more and more antsy by the day, just like her brother – but of course Pyxis hid it far better than her mate, whose six year old body easily betrayed his emotions.
Jade had taken a look at the boy – and had pounced, Carter struggling to get out of the older man's grasp.
"Fucking glue-pot, stalking, dragon! I should have known even changing world wasn't enough to get rid of you!"

The evening had been quite joyous – though all the gods did caught the chancg Adra had gone through – and Jade had enthusiastically invited them to the grand opening of his shop.
All had been rather curious about the Chinese pantheon, especially when they heard about how numerous the lesser god with a very specific domain was – which was why so many of them were bored to tears. This in turn… Meant that most of workers in Jade's shops were both lower gods and spirits that wanted to get back in touch with the mortal world.
Needless to say – they would all be going to Lung's House of Exotics Luxuries – and Thalia, Luke and Nico, when they'd heard about it, had been rather jealous… right until Remus carved under his daughter's still fearsome puppy eyes and promise to take them for a visit once them came back to camp.

Thus, the 31st of August was spent in the large new shop full of eclectic wares – going from Chinese enchanted delicacies to rare potion and enchanting ingredients, passing by an oriental inspired clothing line for the daring wixen, and so on…
The shop opening, without any surprise, was a resounding success.
And finally – September 1st had arrived, and Adra was once more in front of the familiar red train she'd never thought she'd board again.

¤.¤.¤

Passing through the already occupied compartment, Adra paused in front of a familiar scene.
A little girl, nose deep in heavy tome, yet glancing repetitively toward her compartment's door as if hoping someone was going to enter.
"Well, here should be good." she mused
Sirius raised an amused eyebrow "Already collecting more strays, sister dear?"
He didn't call her sister often – thought it did happen from time to time – but right now, the reference to his own 'collecting' as he put it was rather clear.

"Hush, little brother." she admonished him
"We've already established I'm older."
"Yes, but I'm more experienced."
A giggle broke the quibbling, and with a smile Adra broke into a reasonable curtsy – not to deep, as this wasn't a formal event, and as an heiress she didn't need to show respect to many people except the Head of Houses, but deep enough for a first greeting.

"I'm Adrasteia Potter, Heiress Potter, Child of the House Lovegood, and this is Sirius Black, Heir of the Black." she introduced, the god bowing in turn "Well met."
Brown eyes lit up in both excitation and hesitation, and with a hesitant curtsy back, the bushy haired girled answered "I'm Hermione Granger, well met…" there was a lilting tone at the end of her introduction, as she asked "This is how I'm supposed to do it, right? I mean, I wanted to look into it before coming to school, but the teacher for Introduction to the Wixen World didn't assign any book, and I didn't find anything in Flourish&Botts!"

"This is fine," Adra reassured her "there isn't much written knowledge about this outside of the families, this is why this course was reinstated." she explained
Sirius nodded "And what a crusade it was to get it reinstated! Took Remus what… six years?" he mused
"About." Adra nodded
"But why?" Hermione wondered, looking scandalized, making Adra smile mentally at how similar this Hermione was proving to her own "Why remove knowledge from a school?"
"Some people felt that it was too old-fashioned and didn't want to alienate the muggle-born." a shrug "Instead, the muggle-born were the one alienating themselves from the wixen world because they didn't know about regular, everyday practice and even ended accidentally insulting people sometimes."
"Yeah, imagine if you went to Egypt knowing how to speak Arab, but not knowing anything about the local culture?"

The bookish girl nodded, the comparison working as intended.
As they started to talk a bit more, it was soon quite clear that while she put a bit too much trust in books, and authority figures, Hermione was more than anything a lonely little witch that hoped she'd fit better in this world that the one she came from. A few minutes in – and Adra could see Sirius' eyes softening as he started to see a bit of himself in the girl…
She had to fight not to roll her eyes as she received a [Stray accepted] message from him via Chaos Game.

¤.¤.¤

It wasn't long before Neville joined them – Daphne dropped by, but had apparently made a new friend she want to travel with and so left after introducing herself and catching up a bit.
Finally, not surprising Adra much, Ron arrived at the last minute, blushing a bit as all eyes turned to him "Sorry, we ran a bit late, the twins enchanted Percy's Prefect badge to sing dirty ditties but somehow couldn't remember how to cancel their spell…" he rolled his eyes "Mum all but blew a casket, and finally we had to call the Lovegood for Pandora to help."
He shrugged in a 'what can you do' gesture, before realizing there was an unknown among the more familiar faces "Oh sorry, didn't see you there, I'm Ronald Weasley, well met." he said

It never failed to impress Adra to see how much well-mannered this Ron had become. Yet beyond it he was still the same chess and food loving, somewhat lazy but deeply caring boy she'd know life-times ago…
The group was soon chatting amicably, Ron rather amusingly fascinated by what Hermione told them about her life among muggle – a rather unexpected consequence from the interest his parents had taken in him over the past few years.

Leifr dropped by with the twins, announcing "So there's this blond ponce crowing around about how he's going to Slytherin, and complaining about how his position as Heir of Black was stolen…" a dramatic shudder "If he really ends up in the dungeons, I may have to resort to dramatic measures!"
Adra had laughed at that – somehow, no matter how lacking he was in cunning, she doubted Malfoy would end up anywhere but in Slytherin – he had ambition in spades to make of for it after all...

"Still no idea where you're going, Adra?" Gorge asked
A shrug "Nope, I'll let fate decide."
"Seems like we've got a little Ravenclaw in the making here." Fred mused, eyeing the large book Hermione still had on her knees
"I was hoping for Gryffindor." she informed them primly

A loud guffaw, they the twins warned her "Don't! The common room is always loud, and most don't care for the brainy type…"
"… I'm pretty sure Percy is still regretting not going with the ravens…."
"… and it"'s been five years!"
"You can choose?" Hermione asked, a bit surprise
"You have your word to say. Otherwise families wouldn't end up together all the time you know." Leifr explained – still keeping to the tradition of not telling how the sorting happened, Adra noted "But well, the choice-maker knows his job, so listening to him may be wise."

Fred winked "And I've heard there's a private library in the Ravenclaw tower…"
"You think Percy cried when he realized this?" Gorge wondered
Hermione eyed the back and worth with all the fascination one could have for a car wreck – but by the time the trio left, she had a contemplating glimmer in her eyes.
As for Ron, he seemed a bit stunned too "I hadn't realized Percy didn't like Gryffindor."
"Well I doubt he hates it, but if like the twins says, it's always loud… Well at home he can go to his room, but in a dormitory it's not so simple." Neville pointed shyly "I must admit I'm not that enthusiast with the idea of Gryffindor, not matter what my gran-ma said." a shrug "But my parents told me anything would be fine."

"Even Slytherin?" Ron challenged
"Bah, Leifr's a Slytherin!" the Longbottom Heir pointed with some amusement in his eyes "If this isn't the proof that not all Slytherin aren't bad, I don't know what is!"
"Uh, I guess we'll see soon enough…" mused Ron "Anyone up for a chess game or a round of mythomagic?"
"Oh, there's mythomagic in the wizard… no wixen world too?" Hermione realized, eyes shinning "I'm so glad I brought my cards!"
"Yeah, mythomagic can be fond among the wixen, the muggle, and the godly world." Anubis confirmed
"Godly world?" Hermione repeated with some confusion evident in her tone

"Well you know," Ron waved his hands toward Adra and Sirius "Demi-gods and legacies of the gods…"
The bushy-haired girl wasn't getting it – which wasn't surprising really, as she came from the mortal world.
"Muggles don't believe in the gods, Ron." she explained to the red-head – clearly, going by his wide eyes, he hadn't known "And gods from all the legends really do exist, Hermione."
"But since most people have forgotten them, they don't meddle much with the mortal world most of the time." Sirius took over "But some do come around from time to time, more often among wixen since we haven't forgotten about them…"

"And nine months later, a little half-blood is born." Neville laughed "Speaking about it, is it just me or has there been an upsurge of demi-gods in the recent years?"
Adra and Anubis shared a glance – it wasn't just Neville, and it really was a consequence of the reminding the gods of their duty to the mortal realm they hadn't expected.
"It's not you," Ron confirmed "There are only about two or three per year up usually… But in Alys' generation, there's like half a dozen a year!"

¤.¤.¤

The revelation had been rather mind-shattering for the lone muggle-born in their group, who'd commented "Well, I'm looking forward to the Introductory course more and more, there's lots to learn it seems!"
"Don't worry." Sirius was the one to reassure her "Wixen-born kids have the upper-hand when it comes to knowledge about this world, and some theoretical knowledge about basic school topics, but in the end no one is allowed to have a wand before eleven year old."

"And people are really serious about this," Ron added "trying to do magic too young is bad, it can even harm your magic!"
"Some children ends up crippled, or squibbed, because they had too big accidental magic… It usually happens in life-threatening situation but still, no one wants to harm their children's magic." Neville took over
"And apart some Heirs of big families like those," Ron said, gesturing to Neville, Adra and Sirius "us regular folk don't have a mad schedule, what's the point of getting to school already knowing everything after all?"

Hours went by quickly, and soon the children were all getting in their uniform – and with a loud screech, the train stopped in Hogsmeade's train station.
Following the familiar call – for Adra at least – of "First years this way!", the nearly fifty eleven year old were soon stumbling toward the Black Lake. Adra was rather surprised to note that his this life, the giant bore the rather unique feel of half-bloods… Apparently, the giantess that had given birth to him this time around may have been of the immortal kind – which really, wasn't that surprising, as there was another Titan-born half-blood in her own school year., even if Blaise had been lucky enough not to inherit the size...

Seeing Neville nearly slipping for the third-time, Adra rolled her eyes, finally remembering that not everyone could see in the dark like Sirius and her – with a thought she lit her wand, saying to her fellow heir, here why don't you try a Lumos? It's really basic."
Neville rolled his eyes good naturedly "For a genius like you maybe…"
"Bah, magic is quite a bit of will, and I'm pretty sure right now you really want some light of your own, right?"

The slightly chubby blond wizard rolled his eyes but took his wand out nonetheless – the very same cherry and unicorn hair he'd only bough far latter in his previous life, but then again even the children in Ron's family had their own wands, as like the two boys had unwittingly pointed out earlier, wand control was more stringent in this world that Adra's first.
"Lumos!"
The whisper was rather hesitant – but the wand dutifully lit up, making Neville smile.

Having observed intently Adra, then Neville, Hermione asked "Why does it works without the wand movement they talk about in the book?"
"That's because since the books are for beginners, they use method to help the learner cast easier. Wand movements helps your magic flow in the right way, spoken words helps focus on the spell intent…" Sirius explained
"For some spells, you'll need to rely on those to manage to cast at first." Adra took over "But like I said, Lumos really is among the simplest charm there is." a wink "Of course this is only so because it has been perfected by generations of wixen going over the arithmancy and rune form of the spell to make it what it is nowadays!"
There was a gleam in Hermione's eyes – and soon her wand too was lit.

Quite a few children were soon imitating them, making the small trip less daunting – and they were on the banks of the Black Lake.
"No more than four to a boat!"
Adra smiled happily as she felt the wards wash over her, and Hogwarts come into view.
The castle was as beautiful as ever, and it felt a bit like coming back to a beloved childhood home she hadn't seen in a long, long time…
"The students, professor McGonnall."
"Thank you, Hagrid."

¤.¤.¤

The children were waiting in the hall, some trying to put their uniform right according to McGonnall's instructions, some looking frazzled, others like Hermione looking stressed out of their mind. Among them, Sirius and Adra, contentedly whispering together, were rather standing out – not really surprising those that were used to them.
Then the ghost arrived, nitpicking between themselves about Peeve, the resident poltergeist, as if they could do anything about it – froze as they saw both gods, before hastily bowing.
"Uh, I'd always wondered, since it wasn't really evident, but your parents are gods of death, then?" Blaise realized

Sirius send him a dead-panned look, making the child of Thetis laugh – before wincing as a familiar, pug-faced, girl harshly pushed her with a "Out of my way, freak."
Adra frowned, making a note to tell Loki to keep an eye on the situation if Blaise did end up in Slytherin – which she didn't doubt, knowing the half-blood – then laughed as the annoying girl's feet seemed to hit something and she when sprawling on the ground.
Apparently, Neville hadn't like her comment anymore than her – and the gift for plants that the boy had in her world was even stronger in this one, where his family descended from druids and his mother was a half-blood child of Brigid.

She send a thumb up to the boy that was looking angelically at the girl on the ground, making Hermione raise an eyebrow – and McGonnall choose this moment to come back, sending a disapproving glance in the direction of the child that was getting up with a rather colorful vocabulary, she gestured for the first years to enter the great hall.
Adra nearly stumbled, as the Sorting Hat on his stool loudly called to her senses – and she was rather thankful to Pyxis' rather succinct warning before she boarded the train of "Don't be surprised when you arrived, this place was made on a bargain."

Because while it hadn't been quite clear on the ground – now was quite evident.
Hogwarts was sentient.
More importantly, Hogwarts was a minor god, merely more than a spirit, and not tied to one pantheon in particular – a protective deity dedicated to take care of the children in it's walls.
This hat didn't sing, Adra was surprised to note – but talk it did, in the rich voice of a storyteller, a dicta-quill not too far from it recording his words as he weaved the story of a day in the founder's life…
Ending by a small depiction of how each founders had once more that day embodied the traits of their house.
Then, Hannah Abbot was called, and the sorting began.

Hermione was the first change – not surprise really, as after the twin's performance Adra had rather expected it – but deviation, as taking far less time than in her world, the bookish girl was sent to Ravenclaw, where Sirius welcomed her on the benches with a smile.
As for Sirius – he'd taken quite some time under the hat, but she'd hear whispers from the table about 'demi-gods always taking more time', and while she hadn't particularly expected Ravenclaw for her fellow death god, she hadn't really expected anything truth be told, as choosing a single house for someone as old as him seemed a little restrictive.

Then Neville went to Gryffindor, seeming a bit surprised himself about it, and it was Adra's turn.
She caught a glance of Loki's eyes, shinning unnaturally in the soft light of the candle, and it was suddenly evident where she needed to be - because otherwise the ensuing chaos would'n't let the school stand…

"Oh, another Old One!" the deep voice mused, sounding rather intrigued "You'll have to allow me some acces to your mind if I'm to sent you anywhere."
"Will you be alright?" she wondered worriedly – a deity Hogwarts might be, it was still a minor one, a too deep of a glimpse in her mind could turn people mad
A laugh "I'm not going to look too deeply," the Hat reassured her "I'm rather attached to my life." she could feel his wink, which was rather strange "After all I'm a hat only in the mortal world."
And suddenly, she realized why Hogwarts felt so strange, in turn brash and sweet, boldy masculine and decisively feminine…
It was four minds, blended together in their goal to protect the school that made up the deity.
Four founders, that had struck a bargain, and given up their place in the reincarnation circle to stay behind and protect their life's work.

"Indeed, indeed: You've understood rather quickly!" Godric praised as she cautiously dropped part of her shileds "It took more time for the previous one to realize who we were…. Then again," he mused, as she felt him shift through her first life memories "You had an advantage!"
Soon, she could feel the founder of her house being joined by the three other, that quickly went bickering.
"She was a Gryffindor, she should still be one! It is quite a valorous mission to help young heroes!"
"Ah but she's so nurturing and caring, shouldn't she be a
Hufflepuff too?"
"
And though it was stunted by those pigs in her first life, she's long since discovered there's joy in learning!"
"
Why are you so uselessly bickering? We all know she's mine! The strength of will necessary to keep binding her soul again and again, it was only thanks to her ambition to save her mother that she had it! She's grown beyond since, but it's quite clear that she should have been in my House in her first life… And she still should be."

There were some grumble a pouting 'why must his silver-tongue always ends up right?' from Godric, and all four Founders finally were in agreement.
"Nonetheless," Rowena was the one to point out "We all agree that you'd have a place among our Houses too, so you'll be welcomed among them."

¤.¤.¤

As the Hat loudly bellowed "SLYTHERIN!" Adrasteia could feel the magic of the castle wrap around her, neutral uniform now adorned in the silver and green from her new house.
As she went to sit near Daphne and Tracy – Daphne's new friend – Loki was crowing gleefully about her sorting, pulling his tongue at the twins that were playfully booing while cuddling her as if she was a giant teddy bear.
"I knew you wouldn't leave me alone in the dungeons!"

Then his eyes glanced down, toward her chest "Oh, seal of approval from all four uh, that's impressive!"
Intrigued, she glanced toward the Slytherin emblem on the chest – only to note, rather surprised that indeed, albeit on a smaller scale, the other three coats of arms were present too.
"I only got Gryffindor's one!" Leifr said – making her note his own chest did indeed bear two crests rather than one "I'm pretty sure Pyxis had all four too…" he mused "I wonder what little Sirius got?" his eyes strayed toward the bronze and blue table, a bit of power letting him see far better than any human could "Oh, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin, we'll be able to drag him to our dormitory!"

There was a number of surprised faces among both the children and professors, Adra noted – not that she really cared, as those were all people that didn't know a thing about her yet had had expectations due to her parents.
"Wow, Snapey dear looks like he's bit in a lemon." Leifr mused, a glint of mirth dancing in his eyes "Is there something you forgot to tell me, Adra dear?"

It wasn't wrong, Adra had to admit – while she'd always respect the man's dedication in her own life, this wasn't her Snape, and quite honestly, after hearing from Pyxis that he'd all but repeated what her own Snape did despite having a Seer best friend trying to set him straight and non-bullies Marauders…
Well truth be told, she'd quickly pushed the man that had been darkly jealous enough of her own father to curse him with infertility out of her mind – there were countless people to help in this world, countless heroes to help prepare for the future.

She still thought that her Snape had been a hero – she also knew he'd been a bitter man, but he'd never let it go so far as to send such a dark spell at James Potter.
So yes, she may have all but forgotten about Dumbledore's spy during her years before Hogwarts…
"He had a crush on my mother." she answered her fellow god
"Oh, am I going to have to protect your purity?" Leifr teased

Adra rolled her eyes at the rather expected quip "Doubtful, he hated my father, whom I look rather similar to, so much he cursed him infertile."
"Infer… Oh is this why you're a half-blood?" Rune Selwyn wondered from his own place a bit further in the table, not even pretending not to have ear-dropped "But then, how to you look so much like James Potter? Blood adoption?"
"Nah, they did a fertility plea to the gods." Adra corrected
"Oh so you were born with both your mortals parents and a godly one!" the son of Gullveig nodded "I had been wondering…" he admitted shamelessly before being interrupted by a

"HUFFLEPUFF!"
Immediately followed by loud, fake tears "Why? Why do you forsake us so, little brother?"
The half-blood raised an eyebrow "A Weasley that didn't go to Gryffindor? Is the world ending?"
"I think he must have taken his brothers' talk to heart…" Adra mused, Leifr nodding along her
Because clearly, Ron didn't look put out nor anything like this, and instead answered easily "Precisely for this!" making his knew house laugh around him
Percy, Adra noted – did look a bit envious.

It was rather paradoxical – because not going to Gryffindor had been one of the most courageous thing the boy had done in his young life…
And Godric must have agreed – as now that she focused on him, she could see that just like Loki, the youngest Weasley son had the familiar red and gold crest under the Hufflepuff one.

¤.¤.¤

From the other side of the room, she sent a smile and a thumbs up at the red-head, that answered with a bright smile.
Blaise joined her at the Slytherin table a few moments later, the last one to be sorted in their year mates.

Soon, the feast was over, and the children herded toward their respective dormitories.
No words about avoiding a deadly corridor, Adrasteia noted.
But the family had kept an ear out, and while no stealing tentative had been made in Gringotts, it was well known in this world that the Flamel didn't trust the goblins with their stone – and there had been words, quickly hushed-down, about a violent intrusion tentative on a wix family in the Dorset.

And while she didn't know if the Philosopher really had made it's way to Hogwarts just yet, as she hadn't felt anything messing with life and death in the area just yet – now that as a student she'd been added to the wards, it was pretty clear to her that the castle was bristling in contained anger at one of it's teachers.
And Quirrell – felt more dead than alive, a malevolent shade that wasn't quite a soul clinging and leeching on his own.
Clearly, she already had some job lined up at school.

There were no passwords to enter the common rooms, Adrasteia was surprised to note – instead, the entry checked with the school wards which house the children belong too before letting them enter… or barring them the way.
Which explained Loki's musing about dragging Sirius along, she realized.
"So, apparently the twins are welcomed here…" she mused, having noted during the feast they both bore the Slytherin crest under the Gryffindor one "So why isn't Percy also able to go to Ravenclaw?"

"I'm not too sure," Loki admitted – the eldest Weasley at school was both too serious and didn't like to have fun enough for him to really care about "but I think it's a question of acceptance… The twins told me they didn't mind it either way when the Hat was sorting them, as the would either be with me or their family… I doubted Percy was open to any option other than Gryffindor."
"And since he didn't want anything else, he wasn't given access to anything else." Adra nodded – it made sense in a way, since the Hat did take the child's own opinion into account when making it's choice
The room fell into silence as Snape stalked inside.

¤.¤.¤

Adra focused her senses toward him, eyes swirling golden going nearly unremarked by the other children as they all turned their attention toward their head of house. She wondered – if this Snape was as bad as the way he'd cursed James Potter made him seem…
Turns out this Snape held on untold amounts of resentment – enough to make her own Snape seem content in life! Resentment toward his mother, for marrying his muggle father; resentment toward his grand-father for not acknowledging him during his First Rite, making him a dreamless wizard; resentment toward James Potter, for getting Lily Evans; even resentment toward Lily herself, for having had the chance of having a wixen family when he, who was a half-blood, didn't…
All in all, this was a profoundly bitter man, that was jealous of anyone who had more than him in life.

Or rather – that's what he had been until Lily's death.
Now, he was just a man still bitter, but filled with regrets as it had taken his best friend's death to realize all that she'd tried to tell him.
That while he'd had an unfair start in life, there were people worse off than him, that it didn't make it alright to listen to the drivel spouted by xenophobic bastards that were only using him for his talent… That changes had to be made in the wixen world, but it wasn't the one Voldemort wished for.
Her eyes widened as she realized that against all odds, this man wrecked with guilt, and world-weary – had watched over the changes wrought the years, as Pyxis and Remus changed the world.
And that he approved.

Yet – he'd chosen to stay by Dumbledore's side, because he knew Voldemort would be back – and that heading back into danger would be his penance.
Letting her eyes fade back to green, she listened to the double-reading speech this Snape was delivering, making all dark-aligned children lap up what was seemingly telling them that he'd stand up for them and looked down on all but pure-bloods just like them… While on the other hand telling those cunning enough to realize there was more to his words that he'd support them discreetly, but it was up to them to make people look past the Slytherin crest and judge them as individuals.
Then, proving that some really weren't sorted in Slytherin for their cunning, Pansy Parkinson was opening he mouth, complaining once more about the 'freak', wondering in which dormitory they were going to be put…

She didn't seem to realize she was gaining blank look from quite a few children of the old family – as it was rather well known that Blaise was a half-blood, and insulting a children based on a power inherited from their godly parent was plain stupid.
But Pansy had been raised among the proud 'dark' families that had followed Voldemort and bragged about their pure blood, acting as if they owned the wizarding world…. And ignoring themselves all the customs they didn't agree with.
Leifr rolled his eyes, pointing out that nobody had kicked such a fuss when he'd been sorted, but Malfoy was already echoing Pansy in that they didn't need such unnaturalness in their dormitory either.
Adrasteia sighed.

¤.¤.¤

"I'm claiming my right to an individual room as child in direct magical line of one of the founders." she said, not bothering to raise her voice as the magic of the castle was already answering the call, a new door appearing in one of the nooks of the room, Ravenclaw crest proudly displayed "And I'm giving Blaise Zabini house guest rights for the next seven years."
The androgynous child – it was rather difficult to say if they were boy or girl this day, so maybe it was both – inclined his head in thanks, while Leifr was making large puppy eyes at her. A sigh "And I'm giving Leifr Lokison house guests right too for as long as he's at Hogwarts." she relented in adding "There, problem settled." she added a bit louder, bitter irony in her words as she said to the girl "You won't have to suffer us half-bloods in your room."

It was rather amusing – to see those that understood that she was talking about godly blood – and those that didn't.
True to what he'd said but moments before – Snape's approval was rather discreet, a small nod of his head as he turned toward the next point on his start of the year speech – the compulsory medical visit that were scheduled for October.
"See," Leifr whispered in her ear "I told you I was going to have to protect you from him!" the god laughed "Clearly, he's gotten over whatever past he had with your father!"

"He has." Adrasteia nodded, not bothering to pretend she hadn't read his soul to her fellow god "Honestly, he's very ashamed of what he did, and quite curious about how I was even born, though he does have a few theories." a sigh "He's also so ridden with guilt he's setting himself up for a miserable life…"
And she was speaking future tense – because from what she'd heard this Snape was a harsh but rather good teacher, that really did enjoy his job, and had no aspiration toward the Defense Against the Dark Arts post...
The past ten years since the Potter's death had been hard – but tolerable for this Snape, though he did forgive himself for his past. The years to come, if he really did take up his work as a spy...Adra sighed, remembering all too well how weary her how Snape, how death had been a welcomed relief from the man.

"Don't tell me you're taking this one too as a stray?" Leifr teased, reading easily the worry in her eyes as they entered the door that had appeared in the Slytherin common room
She raised an eyebrow.
"A man with a sharp-tongue and dry wits, suffering after realizing the he'd engaged on a road that led nowhere but toward destruction, wanting to fix his mistakes, but not knowing how to forgive himself…"
"Alright, alright, you've made your point!" Loki raised his hand in surrender "But if that's the case, it's to me you should leave him."
She eyed the god of mischief – but right now, it was pretty clear he was serious, so she nodded. She'd let him work on the spy.

The family room were better than the regular dormitories, but no overly lavish.
The three beds were in one room, each with a wardrobe, bookshelf and desk, there was a large bathtub on top of the showers in the bathroom, and there was a small cupboard with an old-fashioned enchanted kettle and an assortment of tea.
Of course, everything was in the bronze and blue tones of Ravenclaw, but the large windows gave view directly to the lake's depth, reminding them they were indeed in the dungeons.

Their trunks were already at the foot of their bed, and some of their belongings put away – books in the shelves, clothes in the wardrobe – making Leifr raise an eyebrow "Seems we're allowed a bit more lee-way in those rooms," he noted, easily recognizing the way the Lovegood House Elves arranged their things "Family Elves aren't allowed in Hogwarts normally."
"As far as privilege goes, it's useful but not over the top." Adra agreed

"Thanks for what you did," Blaise reiterated, bowing formally "you spared me quite a few headaches."
"We've got to support each-others as fellow half-bloods." Adra winked "Besides, it gave me a good reason to claim the family room, I really couldn't stomach the idea of spending seven years sharing a dormitory with this girl."
"I know it never bothered you before but well… You really don't mind?" the gender-fluid child checked "I mean, seeing some at gatherings is one thing, living together…" he blushed

Adra smiled fondly.
She did understand that at eleven year old, Blaise could already see how spending their teen-aged years together could be embarrassing, with one girl and two gender-fluids people under the same room.
But truth be told, it was more for Blaise themselves that it was going to be embarrassing – Loki's true teenage years were long over, and Adrasteia, while her body would be going through the changes that came with this age, had gone though this period of life enough that mentally it didn't mean much to her.

Speaking of which…
"I grant house guests rights to Alys Lokison as long as she or Leifr are at Hogwarts." she said, making Loki nod his head in thanks before slipping in the in-between to fetch his daughter – something he'd done quite often during the previous two years, but was going to be easier with a member of the founding families confirming the authorization for the child to be in the school
"I don't mind." Adra reassured Blaise, just as Leifr and Alys arrived back "I've been living with Leifr for nearly ten years, and with Alys since birth."
Blaise smiled, finally relaxing, and soon the trio was milling about, and soon enough, the lights were dimmed, and four children asleep in the blue and bronze room under the lake.

It had been far too easy to settle in the familiar rhythm of life at Hogwarts.
She'd spend the first breakfast at the Slytherin table, but had jumped around, visiting her friends and of course her little brother on the other tables ever since.
This had raised a few eyebrows – but given that Loki and the twins were all but inseparable despite being in different houses, people had soon gotten used to the group of firsties table-hopping.

Adrasteia had been rather interested to see the first lesson of the Introductory course to the wixen world – but truth be told, it was rather easy to test out of it for her.
She'd been rather amused to hear the temper tantrum of Pansy and Malfoy when they'd failed, as their parents had only taught them the customs they liked rather than those that were in use by all.
The fact that Andromeda Tonks of the Black was the teacher was like adding spice on the wound for the Malfoy Heir that still claimed to all that wanted – or didn't want – to hear him that Sirius wasn't the true heir and that it should be him.

Sirius, was rather patient – was still a god, and getting harassed by a child wasn't quite his idea of fun.
So the green-eyed goddess was honestly rather impressed that it took him all of the week before snapping.
He calmly pointed that since he'd been adopted after his First Rite, he wasn't indeed the Magical Black Heir, Adrasteia was, but that him being the official heir was perfectly legal and that he was very welcome to send his complaints to Pyxis if he didn't fear insulting the Head of the House he was claiming he had a right to, nor the risk of bringing about a House feud.
Draco had turned even paler than usual – as brash as he was, even he wasn't stupid enough to potentially anger the Black House Head, and House feud were nearly taboo in the wixen world…

The last one had ended with two noble Houses going extinct, and all had been done ever since to avoid them, including prison time and desinheriting the offending party.
The boy had been having nightmares ever since – where he was pursued by ferocious, red-eyed jackals in a dark sand desert…
Sirius had reassured her that those would stop as soon as he learned his lesson.

It had taken but one lesson with Quirrell for Adrasteia to confirm that he was indeed possessed by Voldemort – albeit far more skillfully than in her own world, since he didn't need any grotesque turban – but that it wasn't the soul of the man, but the shade that had left his body when he'd tried to kill her as a baby.
Beyond his possessed state – this Quirrell was a surprisingly good teacher, making the subject interesting and giving both clear explanations for the theoretical work, and very easy to follow demonstrations for the practical parts.

It was also rather clear that he didn't even realize he was possessed, and wasn't particularly inclined to agree with Voldemort's view since he was a half-blood himself.
The shade was going to have to be exorcised – and doing this and keeping the host alive wasn't going to be easy.
The exorcising part, she could do, of course.
The keeping alive was going to be more difficult – while she could temporarily keep the wizard's soul in his body, she needed someone to heal him at the same time. She was going to need some help, preferably from a powerful healer or half-blood from a god of life or healing, and this help needed to be found before Halloween, which clearly would be the easiest day to perform the exorcism.

As it so happened – she did know a child of Apollo in the school.
"So let me get it stray…" the Hufflepuff Head Girl summarized as Adra cornered her in the library "Since your godly parent is tied to death… I'd wondered by the way… You can sense that Quirrell is possessed and while you can exorcise him you need my help to heal him?"
A nod.

¤.¤.¤

The blond girl's smile shone like the sun "Oh it's no more strange than all our adventures with the Cursed Vault." she mused
Adrasteia nodded – she knew she'd made the right choice, after all she'd heard about the adventures of the demi-goddess along her school years, as she and her friend dug into the mystery of sadi Cursed Vault. One of them – a legacy of Athena – had nearly died, and it was only Penny's talent with her father's gift for healing that had saved Rowan…

As days turned to weeks, Adra had felt Voldemort take over his host during the evening, searching through the castle – probably for the philosopher stone.
She'd noted that there indeed was a stone, hidden in Dumbledore's office behind strong wards.
A very large, but quite non-magical ruby.
This was a rather good trap – but she'd need her own for the exorcism she would perform at the end of October.

Thankfully, she had a powerful ally – as she'd soon realized she could communicate with Hogwarts. And the castle, being made of the mind of the four founders, clearly didn't like the presence of Voldemort leeching on one of their children… Because of course, for a castle as all – all were her children, as long as they'd one day studied in the castle!
And so, she'd been directed toward an old room, that hadn't been used in centuries – back when rituals were more commons, before wand magic had all but replaced most old magical disciplines.

Adra spent quite a bit of her days running through the arithmetic and runic calculations needed for her ritual – earning intrigued glances from Hermione at the incomprehensible jargon.
Ron and Neville were more than used to see her study things far above their level – hell, even Luna was far better than them in runes they pointed out without any shame This comment had of course risen the muggle-born curiosity, that had been rather fascinated to learn that quite a bit of wixen children had a basic knowledge of runes, that let them perform small magical acts and helped avoid accidental magic.
Loki had dropped an eye on the ritual preparations, rather impressed, but knew quite well that this wasn't something he could help with – and Sirius had been professionally interested, as he'd never seen a wixen exorcism, but was only going to be an observer as this wasn't something where his help would be needed...

Adrasteia had wondered about warning Dumbledore, but decided that if he wanted to be kept in the loop he should have told those concerned that he was laying a trap for Voldemort inside Hogwarts.
A school.
Full of children.
The man was a bit too caught up in the bigger picture…
September turned into October, and soon, Voldemort had caught on the fake hiding room Hogwarts had arranged, and the Halloween feast was underway.

¤.¤.¤

Thanks to the Introductory Course, quite a few muggle-born had found themselves curious about Samhain, and one thing leading to another, their comments had gotten back to Dumbledore, making him realize that the two celebration could be combined
As the feast drew to an end, and the desserts appeared to the table, wax, candle wick, but also multiple dried aromatic herbs and spices were brought too.
The loud feast slipped into a more comfortable atmosphere as the children were soon focusing on making candles between to bites of pie and cake, and at eleven, the students were sent back to the dormitories, where all would be able to light their candle when midnight came.

Adra and Penny discreetly slipped toward the warded room in the dungeon, and as midnight hit, bait taken Quirrell entered the ritual room.
Except right now, Adra's godly senses weren't needed to realize the man wasn't Quirrell, red eyes gleaming unnaturally in the dim light.

Penny shuddered as she felt the aura of black magic dripping from the man, and couldn't help but whisper "Of course it would be Voldemort…"
Which – was a rather unexpected comment for a witch that had believed the man dead for the past ten years -but given the daughter of Apollo's own entanglement with the Dark Lord's worshipers over the years she'd been looking for the Hidden Vaults, it maybe wasn't that surprising.

The man was clearly weary, multiple spells looking for hidden traps and so on as he moved slowly toward the pedestal where a large red stone, gleaming ethereally, floated in a bubble of protective magic.
This was a real spell of course, as the other would be understandably leery if his prize looked to easy to win – Loki and the twins had quite enjoyed the challenge of making the protective bubble, that was a rather unique wix transcription of a Norse runic spell.
And finally – finally, he took the last step toward the pedestal.

¤.¤.¤

Magic that had remained inactive until then flared to life as Sirius sealed the room around them, slipping himself in the shallowest layers of the Duat to keep a watch on the ritual without interfering with it.
Voldemort shouted in rage as the large ritual circle around him activated in a storm of power, runes and esoterical symbols springing to life into a dome that stuck him in the area.
Adrasteia eased her control on her aura, powering up the ritual in a true battle of will as the dark wizard unleashed his own magic against her, astoundingly powerful for a simple shade.
But this was Samhain, the night where the veil between realms was the thinnest…
The night of the year Adra could call on most of her powers without fearing for her mortal body.

Soon, Quirrell's body was dropping to the ground, Voldemort's shade way too busy struggling against Adra to even notice as Penny dropped by the wizard's side and started to weave her healing spells, magic glowing a sunny golden echoing the powers of her father.
Neither girl could say how long it lasted – until finally, with an unearthly screech that chilled Penny's blood in her veins, Voldemort's shade finally broke free from the large circle, disappearing in an explosion of dark magic that made even Hogwarts wards shudder – and Quirrell started to breath alone again.

The two girls fell to the ground, utterly spent.

"There's no way you're a regular half-blood." Penny laughed tiredly "But right now I'm rather happy about it… Because you're going to need it against this monster."
Sirius dropped out of the Duat "That was one impressive battle." he said, admiration clear I nhis voice – and Adra wasn't too surprised that the god, raised as he'd been by Osiris, compared the ritual to a battle
It had been just as nerve-wracking and exhausting as one after all, and Egyptians god, unlike the Norse, didn't look down on magic, so her truly understood how difficult and impressive what Penny and her had just accomplished.

That was why he hadn't interfered too – though she'd felt he wanted to help – as any outside interference, no matter how well-intended, could have well broken the fragile balance between the two girls' powers at work.
"I don't think we'll be able to move just yet." Adra admitted "Would you mind taking Penny back to her dormitory?" she asked
"Will you be alright?" the jackal god asked, one eyebrow rising in interrogation
"I'll manage one portal." she reassured him

A nod, and with a discreet swirl of godly power, he was back to his older looks, and picking up a blushing Penny easily.
"Thanks again for your help."
"Anytime." the Hufflepuff answered, before reitering "I mean it. I may leave Hogwarts at the end of the year… This is an evil I'll help you fight against if you need it."
Adra nodded seriously, thanking the half-blood once more – and Anubis dropped back in the Duat, the Head Girl in his arms.

¤.¤.¤

"You've got a great daughter."
There was a proud laugh "I really do." Apollo agreed as he materialized in the school
Adra did a double-take "Wow, coloring aside you really look like your sister." she blurted, a bit too tired to filter her words

"Oh! You met Artie!" the other crowed enthusiastically "Isn't my little sister great?"
"Isn't she older?"
"I'll call her big sis the day she looks older than me." Apollo dead-panned, before turning more serious "So, I guess you're the one I own my head-aches to?"

"I'm really sorry about that… I mean I knew I was giving quite a bit of work to the Moirai, but you know…"
"If it meant saving the world it was worth it." the golden blond agreed in a serious manner that clearly wasn't usual of him
"But I really didn't know what it would do to you… When I met your sister she told me your were cloistered up in your temple. And well… I couldn't well just walk up there to apologize."
"Yeah, no kidding, old dad would blow a gasket." the sun god had to agree

He eyed her with both curiosity, and the inherent, strange, wisdom all seers seemed to share.
"Just being around you, I can feel the cogs of destiny moving." he said "Even mortals Seers must feel it!"
"Uh. I didn't know that… Guess I'll stay away from the resident Divination teacher." she tilted her head "I wouldn't be vexed if you kept away because of this."
"No way!" he protested! It's a bit disturbing, but I can deal with it, and you're one of the more interesting things to happen to this world in centuries…"
The loud voice became a near whisper.
"After all… it's only since your birth, that my visions have ended in anything other than the end of the world."

Her eyes widened.
She had realized that the Fates of all pantheons were disturbed by her presence as it changed the world's fate – but he was the first to put so clearly in words.
That to them she had also brought back hope.
It was humbling – and she felt the already crushing weight of this world's fate on her shoulder deepen… Yet at the same time, it only confirmed further her resolution to see this through – and to save this world for the Abyss.
Because how could a place where's she met so many great heroes and people, be doomed to be Lost?

¤.¤.¤

Apollo was the one to drop her back in her room, under Leifr's rather amused dead-pan stare.
The god had winked "I'll drop by again when I check on Penny!"
Loki had laughed, then fussed over her as he realized, without much surprise, how tired she was. Blaise was woken up by the mother-henning, and rather than ask questions, isntead opted to help the older student get the girl to bed – where her three familiars had been waiting for her patiently, having felt that she was tired, but alright.

The next day, the rumor mill had worked overtime as word had gone around that Quirrell had already fallen to the Defense Against the Dark Arts Curse – which really was a shame, as was quite a good teacher.
Quirrell was weakened by his bout of possession – but alive, which really hadn't been easy to manage. Madam Pomfrey, the resident mediwitch, had quickly admitted that her expertise wasn't quite enough for such a case, and after a few days, the wizard had been sent to Saint Mungo.
The mystery had thickened when word had came back from the wixen hospital that Quirrell was miraculously recovering from a bad case of forced possession – but in the meanwhile Andromeda Tonks had been gracious enough to take up the slack, as she had the least hours to teach among the faculty.

While she was a much sterner teacher than Quirrell, she was also quite well versed in black magic given her birth family, and a rather good teacher – which was more than enough for the students, that were rather sadly used to substandard teachers in the post because of the curse laid on it.
Penny and Adra had been rather tired, but not so much as to raise suspicion from the teachers, in the following days, and the Head Girl had been brimming with happiness as she explained how she'd even received a visit from her father once Sirius had dropped her back in her room – as a Head Girl, she qualified for a single room.

Dumbledore had waited a few more days before dismantling the trap in his office, and after that, the winter vacation were soon upon the school.
