POV of Miriam
June 23rd was the first day of summer. A month has passed since I was diagnosed with Type-one diabetes. I had an outing with Mei at the skate park at 12:30. Mrs. Lee was picking me up and taking Mei and me there. When it was time I grabbed my diabetes bag, skateboard, and quickly lanced my finger, threw the lancet in the sharps container, and put my lancing device back in my bag. My blood sugar was perfect and I was ready to go right as Mei pulled in. I put my bag over my shoulder, grabbed my skateboard, and headed over to Mei's car.
"Hey, Mir!" Mei said. "Hi Mei", I replied. "How is your summer so far?" Mei asked. "It's going great, Mei"."How about yours"? I asked in return. "It's great so far," She said. Mei and I continued to talk until we got to the skate park.
Once Mrs. Lee parked I hopped out of the car and grabbed my skateboard and Mei Grabbed her roller-blades and we started to walk over to the park. Mrs. Lee was staying at the park so then she could supervise us. "Mei, why is your mother staying with us"? I asked. "Mir Please don't ask that in front of my mother" Mei replied. I nodded and apologized knowing my question was hurtful and rude. I set my diabetes bag down with Mrs. Lee. I walked over to the half-pipe and started riding. I saw a boy who was also skateboarding and noticed me. He then walks over to me and introduces himself. "Hi I'm Landon," he said. "Oh, I'm Miriam nice to meet you" I responded. " I saw you heading to the half pipe. Do you care to show me some of your slick tricks? he asked. "Oh sure of course" I answered. I showed him a few tricks. He was amazed by my ability. "WOW, Miriam You're amazing!" He exclaimed. "Can you do anything on the 20-foot ramp"? He asked. "Yes, I can", I replied. "Can you show me"? He petitioned. "Yeah, I can", I said.
When we got up to the ramp he asked me "Hey Miriam I'm not even allowed to be up here would you mind giving me a quick tutorial on how to do one of your tricks"? "Oh, I'm sorry but if you can't be up here then I can't show you. I don't want you to get hurt. I would still love to show you though". I replied. "Fine Whatever," He said, irritated. When was I getting ready to show him the hardest trick I know. I feel my skateboard flip causing me to fall 20ft onto the ground. I then felt a sharp pain in my upper back and felt short of breath. Landon walked up to me. "OMG Miriam I am so sorry" He stated. His tone of voice sounded like he was not sorry. That's when I knew he did it on purpose. I start to cry. '"Awww you're crying aren't you little baby" He tormented. "STOP"! I exclaimed. Mei then noticed me and ran over to me right away. "Mir are you ok?" She asked. I was not fine, it was getting more difficult for me to breathe and my hands started to feel Tingley. Then I lost all feeling in my legs to my upper back.
