I woke up in cold sweats. I was laying on a cot. The first thing I heard was a concerned voice.
"Hey, you're back." His serene smile hid how he really felt but I could see it. He was scared.
"Paul?" I tried to sit up but it hurt.
"I'm here cupcake. How are you feeling?"
"What happened?"
"You fainted. Do you remember what happened?" I nodded my head. Of course, I remembered. He and Embry fought in the cafeteria. I still felt weird about it. I wanted answers but before I could ask Paul what really happened the door banged open. Embry's eyes were filled with hurt and regret for what I didn't know. I just knew that I didn't want him near me. I sit up, staring at Embry.
"Whoa cupcake, be careful. You should rest." Paul grabbed my arm. I hissed in pain when he touched my stomach for a second.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, looking straight at Embry.
"I wanted to apologize cupcake," said Paul. I turned to look at Embry. He looked shaken, and his eyes searched mine. Why would he apologize to me? He didn't do anything wrong. He was just a guy with a bad temper.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know that this would happen." He came towards me and, when he reached out his hand to me, I pushed him away.
"Don't touch me." Paul shook his head, watching us with a sad expression. Embry bowed his head before whispering again.
"I'm sorry." He then left the room, leaving me alone with Paul. I didn't meet his eyes and before I knew what was happening Paul sighed loudly.
"Listen, I will be back soon. I have this thing I kinda have to do. See ya later cupcake." I didn't move when he too left the sticky room. It didn't take long to make a decision. I stood up to catch up with Paul. I found him in the school hallway with Embry and hid in the darkest corner.
"Hey Call, wait up."
"What Paul? Don't you see that I'm busy?"
"Busy with what? Nicole?"
"Don't talk about her like that, okay." Embry's face fell after he said that.
"Bullshit, Call. Don't lie to me, okay. You hit me."
"I'm not lying. I don't even know what you want from me, Lahote."
"I want a lot of things, Call. But right now I want you to stay away from Rileigh." Embry's eyes shifted towards Paul.
"What?"
"You heard me, Call. I don't think you should talk to her right now. You behave like a madman. Even Nicole noticed that something's wrong with you." Paul placed a hand on Embry's shoulder.
"I'm not, okay. "
"You should talk to Sam about it. He could help you."
"I won't talk to Sam about it. I can't."
"Then stay away. If you see her, walk away and don't say another bad word about her."
"I can't just walk away, you know I can't do that. It's this thing."
"You're so full of shit, Call. You want Nicole, right? Then walk away and don't look at Rileigh ever again."
"I don't want her."
"I already know that."
"No, what I mean is that I don't love her, Paul."
"You're not making sense right now, Call."
"I don't love Ni..." Embry stopped in the middle of the sentence. His eyes were wide as if he could sense that I was eavesdropping on their conversation.
Let's just go. We're not alone," said Embry. Paul nodded even though he was eager to find out what Embry meant. Even I was a bit curious about what he was talking about.
"Hey, what are you doing here?"
"Nothing."
"Liar, I know everything about you." I gulped hard. He knew nothing about me and as far as I could say Jacob Black was mystery to me. Jacob sighed, staring into my big eyes when I didn't move.
"Come on, I will drive you home. Your lover boy already left. Charlie is worried about you." When he grabbed my arm I let out a low scream.
"No, let me go. Don't touch me!"
"Whoa, calm down. I wasn't even touching you. I was just kidding. What's wrong with you? Are you sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine."
"Okay, come on now. Charlie asked me to drive you home. I don't want to let him down." I didn't asked questions, instead I just followed Jacob outside. This day was full of surprises.
I stared out the window when the car slowly pulled into the driveway 30 minutes later. Jacob hadn't said a word to me the whole drive home, but every time I wasn't looking he gazed at me. I felt his eyes on me again and then he finally said something.
"We're here, finally." I kept my mouth shut, still looking out the car window. My head still hurt and I was tired of getting no answers from anyone.
"Listen, I really don't want it to be like this. I just want to let you know that I'm okay with you. I mean you're Bella's cousin and Charlie would kill me if something were to happen to you. So are we cool?" My jaw dropped a bit. Did Jacob just apologize to me? And why the sudden change in his behavior?
"Don't take this too serious, okay? I won't bother you again. Just be careful. There are a lot of things you don't know about and I would hate to see Charlie getting hurt again." I couldn't move for a while. He really apologized to me. What a weird day. I tried to find the right words, anything to assure Jacob Black that I will forgive every mean word he said to me, but I couldn't do it.
"Don't look, but Charlie's looking out the kitchen window. He's really worried about you. You should go to him and let him know that you're fine for now." I nodded, even though it was still hard to grasp what was happening. One minute Jacob was the biggest jerk and now he was my frenemy?
I let out a sigh of relief when I finally opened the passenger door. I needed some fresh air. Right now. It was all too much. Just as I was about to leave, Jacob stopped me. His palms were hot and sweaty.
"Are you sure you're good? You still do look pale?" His deep voice gave away his concern. Everything was changing, fast. Too fast for my liking.
"I'm fine. You should leave now before Charlie comes outside." Jacob let out a low laugh, but nodded anyway. He sure as hell didn't want to be invited over for dinner. He knew that Edward was coming over to see Bella. Like every night.
"Alright, see you at school then." I nodded, leaving his truck. My legs were shaking, but I moved forwards. I had to. I didn't need any help. Not anymore. I slammed the door shut, not daring to look at Jacob again. I still had to figure out what he meant and if I could really trust him?
