A/N: I had accidentally wrote Bart as Kid Flash in the last chapter. I went back and fixed it. He is Impulse. (This all takes place during season 2 but with slight changes. The leaguers are not off world. Kaldur is not undercover. And Mount Justice is not destroyed.)

There was a sharp knock on the door. Hailey started and took a breath. She told whoever was knocking to come inside. She let out a small gasp of surprise when she saw Wonder Girl walk in. Hailey only knew her from the articles in the newspaper and footage she'd seen of her in the news. The Wonder Girl she was familiarized with was probably closer to twenty years old. And this girl was close to her age.

She had to get used to that. This wasn't her world. And she had to be careful about letting in how much she knew. She felt like she'd already fucked up with Tim and Dick. How had she not known that he'd been Nightwing all along?

She'd only figured out Tim's secret when she heard his voice. That's how she realized who this Nightwing was. She'd recognized Dick's voice before she saw him in the suit. She had never interacted with Nightwing. And she'd seen Dick fight Nightwing. Had that Nightwing been an alternate-world person too? Was her brother Dick even Nightwing at all? How many secrets did her brother keep from her? How much had she purposely overlooked?

Hailey started to feel very stupid. She hadn't realized she'd looked away from the person in the room until she remembered she wasn't alone. She looked back at Wonder Girl, who was staring at her like she wanted to kill her. What the hell was that about? Did she think Hailey was a threat too?

"What is it?"

Wonder Girl's glare intensified. She tossed what was in her hands at Hailey's feet and crossed her arms over her chest.

Hailey looked at the bundle and realized it was a change of clothes. She bent down to grab the items. It was a red crop top and a pair of gray yoga pants with the Wonder Woman emblem.

"Uh, thanks?" Hailey said awkwardly. She wasn't given any underwear with the clothes. And Wonder Girl was still staring at her. "No privacy?"

Wonder Girl scoffed and took a couple of steps to the door. When she reached for the doorknob she turned her head slightly. Not enough to look at Hailey, only enough that her voice would carry.

"Robin has a lot of friends that are willing to protect him. Fair warning. If you're saying you're his sister to get close to him to stab him in the back, it will end badly for you."

Wonder Girl slammed the door shut with a resounding thud. Hailey noticed the door splintered around the doorknob. The cracks stretch out in every direction a few inches.

"What the hell do these people think I can do to them?" Hailey said and choked back a sob.

She was completely and utterly alone. Dick wasn't her brother. Tim was exactly the same but still not the Tim who knew her. She didn't even know why or how she'd found herself in the situation she was in. The last thing she remembered before waking up was…

Hailey dropped to her knees when the weight of her body became too heavy for her legs to hold up. She bowed her back and hugged herself. All her emotions bubbled up, and she began to sob. She couldn't hold back everything she was feeling.

Hailey felt a whoosh of air before a pair of arms wrapped around her shoulders. She tried to swallow down her sobs but all that did was make her choke on them.

"Hey, it's okay," Impulse told her. "You're safe here. And I'm pretty sure Nightwing will figure out the ins and outs of the portal."

His words were a comfort to Hailey because they were true. Dick had always gone all in no matter what he did. She didn't think it mattered that he didn't know her. He would help her regardless because he was Nightwing. She calmed down enough to feel completely embarrassed. "I'm sorry."

"Hey, it's no problem, amigo," Impulse said with a bright smile and released her. He flitted back to a door Hailey had assumed to be a closet. He opened it and gestured inside. "In case you didn't know, there's a bathroom here. I'm just going to head back and make sure dinner is ready. I'll send Rob over to get you in a few."

He whooshed to the door and stopped. "What happened here?"

"Wonder Girl," Hailey said with a shrug.

"Okay, that's worrisome. But not to worry, I'll find someone to fix it."

Impulse left her alone. Hailey decided she could use a shower. She went into the bathroom with the clothes Wonder Girl provided and noticed it was well stocked. There was even a new toothbrush still in its packaging. Hailey opened it up. It was a tiny Captain Marvel. At his feet was the toothbrush head. There was a button on the back. When Hailey pressed it, the lightning emblem on its chest lit up. It made Hailey chuckle before she set it back down on the counter.

She looked at herself in the mirror and realized she was a mess. It wasn't just her blotchy face. Her hair was tangled. And her complexion was so pale she looked otherworldly.

No wonder they think I'm here to kill someone.

She rubbed her face and turned to the shower. When she stepped back into the room, Tim was there waiting for her. He'd taken off his mask and smiled at her. She smiled back and ran a hand through her wet hair. She hoped she didn't give off serial killer vibes anymore.

"Are you hungry? Dinner is ready," he told her in a gentle tone. Hailey nodded. "Let's go." He gestured for her to follow after he put his domino mask back on. "So what should I call you? You never told me your name."

"Hailey," she said as she followed him down the hall. "Do the others not know your name? Is that why you're wearing the mask? Do they only call you Robin?"

"Yeah, basically. But there are a few who do know my civilian ID. Like Impulse and the original team members."

"There's not a lot of trust between everyone, is there? It makes sense why you don't trust a random girl who fell into your base through a portal. But why not just send me away? Why keep me here prisoner?"

"Uh," Tim said and stopped her by holding onto her arm. "You're not a prisoner."

"Great. Show me the exit."

"We can't just let you leave."

"Because?"

"You're not even from this dimension. We want to help you get back where you belong."

"By holding me against my will in a bunker with people who think I'm here to hurt you and aren't afraid to threaten me?"

"Who threatened you?"

Hailey pointedly looked down at her shirt and back at Tim.

"I'll take care of it."

"Yeah? How do you plan to do that? By saying please be nice to the prisoner? People who aren't inherently kind are never nice to prisoners."

"You're not a prisoner, Hailey."

"Tim. I'm literally in a bunker. There are no windows. I'm wearing issued clothes. I'm barefoot. And I need a guard wherever I go," Hailey said in a low, harsh tone. "Just because I'm not in cuffs or behind bars doesn't mean I'm free. I'm. A. Fucking. Prisoner."

Tim sighed heavily. "I'm sorry. We're doing what we can to make you comfortable. We'll get everything sorted soon. I promise."

"Until then, I'm your captive."

"Fine. Yes. But that doesn't mean we won't help you."

"Unless I prove to be a threat."

"Are you a threat?"

"Oh my god," Hailey said and pinched the bridge of her nose. She was not going to cry again. Nope. "I'm telling Janet you're being an asshole."

"Good luck with that."

Hailey looked at him. Was Janet dead here too? He was looking away from her. She could still see the side of his face. He was frowning. Upset, not sad. "Shit. Sorry."

"It's fine. Let's get going before the food gets cold."

"Yeah, sure." How do you ask if someone is dead without asking if they're dead? "Is she gone?"

"Cairo."

"Never been."

"Me neither."

"What's so great about it?"

"I'm not there, apparently."

They were both quiet for a beat. Then Hailey took his hand in hers and squeezed. He squeezed hers back.

"Don't say anything to Wonder Girl. It doesn't matter. I can deal."

Tim nodded but didn't say anything.

When they emerged from the hallway, Hailey took a step back. They were walking towards a large room full of youths dressed in costume. She felt uncomfortable and severely underdressed. What did they know about her? What were they told? Would they all hate her instantly? She couldn't face a room full of scorn from heroes.

Tim noticed her hesitation and turned to ask what was wrong. But before he could say anything, Impulse ran up to them, grabbed Hailey, and took her into the common room with all the others.

"Attention, everyone!" Impulse said with a flourish.

Superboy, Blue Beetle, Wonder Girl, Miss Martian, and Bumblebee turned to stare at Bart and Hailey. Most of them were seeing her for the first. They were curious about who the girl was. Superboy and Miss Martian had witnessed her arrival but kept their distance; so as not to overwhelm their visitor.

Tim sighed and walked into the room to save Hailey from the exuberant Bart.

"This is a new friend—!"

Tim cleared his throat and stood in front of Bart. "Read the mood."

"What?"

Tim looked over at Hailey, who'd reached a new level of paleness. She was looking down and away. Bart looked at her and then grimaced.

"Aw man, she's totally feeling the mode."

"Take her to get some food. It might help. I'll clear this up with everyone."

"Noted," Impulse said and rushed Hailey to the dining table.

"Yo, Impulse," Beast Boy said with a wave. He was sitting alone at the table while eating some fruit. "And friend. Hello, I'm—"

"Beast Boy," Hailey said in surprise. Why is he so young?

"No, that's my name, silly," he said and giggled. "Should I guess yours?"

Hailey smiled and shrugged. She sat down after Impulse happily gestured to the chair in front of Beast Boy.

"Okay. Hmm. It starts with the letter S." Hailey shook her head. "Uh, what about L?"

"No, but you're getting warmer."

"Alright! Okay, let's see. F?"

"Not quite. But you're very hot."

"G?"

"Blazing hot now."

"H!"

"Scorching! Now you need to guess my name."

"Wait, I thought it was Ginny Weasel," Impulse said from the kitchen, where he was plating some dishes.

Beast Boy started to laugh. "You told him you were Ron's sister? That's gold! Up high!"

"Uh, who's Ron and this Ginny person?"

"Characters from the Harry Potter series!" Beast Boy said, chuckling.

Impulse rushed out of the room with a whoosh of air.

"I thought he'd catch the reference."

Impulse returned and left Hailey windblown. She ran a hand through her dry hair to get it out of her face.

"A girl from a magical world who slips into the real world through portkeys. Fitting," Impulse said and dropped all four books on the table. "So, amigo, your name starts with the letter H, hmm?" He pointed at Beast Boy and then at himself. "Lightning round, go!"

After a few rounds of back and forth, Beast Boy guessed Hailey.

"Woo-hoo! I won! What did I win?!"

"A lifetime of servitude!" Impulse announced.

"How about something as simple as friendship?" Hailey said, playfully shoving Impulse.

"Deal!" Beast Boy said and cheered.

"Dinner is served!" Impulse said. He placed a plate in front of Hailey and sat beside her.

"Aren't you going to eat?" Hailey asked.

"Already did!"

"He eats all the time!"

"Hey! I have a fast metabolism! I need the calories. It helps me keep my speed!"

"Yeah, I get it. I get pretty hungry after I morph. Especially if I keep the shape too long."

Hailey pushed the food around on her plate. She knew she was hungry but couldn't eat the food Impulse had given her. It was a pork chop with a side of green beans with bacon and some fried cabbage made with bacon. Were they trying to poison her?

"What's the matter? Not hungry?"

"Maybe she's a vegetarian!" Beast Boy said.

"Not exactly. But I don't eat pork."

"Ah, a kosher diet."

"I have food allergies. Lots of food allergies."

"Alright, what can't you eat?" Impulse said with a tilt of his head.

"Maybe we should stick with what I can."

"I can get you whatever you like from anywhere in the world."

"Anything?"

Impulse nodded. "Just name it."

"I could go for a Cobb salad. No bacon. No onion. No protein. With ranch dressing and added cucumbers?"

"Be back in a flash!"

"Sounds vegetarian to me," Beast Boy said with a grin.

Tim walked into the dining hall after Hailey finished eating. "Batman is here."

Hailey let out a soft sigh and stood up. "Wish me luck," she said to Beast Boy.

Gar stared at her looking confused. But Impulse stood up and clapped her on the shoulder. "Luck. Who needs luck? Batman is totally crash! Right, Robin?"

Tim grimaced and turned away. He didn't say a word. Hailey followed just as quietly.

"Why do they look like they're heading to a firing squad?" Beast Boy said and scratched his head.

"Don't know. But I'll find out!"

Hailey stopped when Tim did. She looked at Batman, who was staring right at her. He looked smaller than the Batman she knew. Was it even the same person? Unless she was remembering the Batman she saw through the eyes of a little girl that was scared out of her mind. Was Batman always this…what? Small wasn't the right word because he was tall and had a lot of brawn. Intimidating. But not inhuman like she remembered.

Hailey crossed her arms over her chest. Did this Batman see what the others saw? Or did he see what she was, alone and vulnerable?

"Uh, Batman, Hailey. Hailey, Batman," Tim said, looking from one to the other.

Neither responded.

"Batman?" Nightwing said, feeling impatient.

"I'm waiting for the others," Batman said, looking at Nightwing. "They should be here soon."

"Others?" Tim said.

Batman gave a terse nod before returning his attention to Hailey.

Right then, the Zeta Tube lit up. "Recognized, Black Canary 1-3. Green Arrow 0-8. Superman 0-1."

When Hailey saw Superman, she let out a rush of air and mouthed the word 'mom'. Since Batman was looking at her, he noticed. He frowned slightly and followed her line of sight right to Superman. He turned to look at her again when he saw her move. She was about to run to Superman. Batman moved to block her. But she wasn't going to stop. He reached out to grab her hand and said in a non-threatening tone, "Stop."

Hailey jerked to look at Batman and said, "Dad?"

That had been her dad's voice. Not the grave, deep voice she knew to be Batman. It was Bruce. The way he sounded when he was barking orders trying to be strict.

Her mind processed the information quickly. Her dad was Batman. Had been Batman before he took her in. When he left her alone in the mansion. When he fired Robin. When he beat criminals to a pulp after Jason died. When she saw him covered in bruises. When Tim became Robin. When he went overseas with a broken back. When the earthquake hit Gotham. When he left her to live with Dick and went to No-Man's-Land. He abandoned her to be Batman. He abandoned her.

She was suddenly filled with rage. A lot of what she had been feeling and had experienced could have been avoided if he had told her he was Batman. She focused on Bruce while keeping her forward momentum. She took advantage of his shock from hearing her call him Dad. She jumped, placing her hands on his shoulders to help her go higher. As soon as she was in the right position, she kneed him in the chin. Just like Jason had taught her. They both fell back. Hailey rolled away from Batman before he could retaliate. She was caught by strong arms before she could stand up. Then her entire world went back.
