Mary is looking for herbs. She's a long way from Camelot and doesn't know her way around here. Nevertheless, Gaius has told her that they absolutely need cherry laurel, and that it grows particularly well here. In fact, Mary has already collected quite a bit.
Arthur and Merlin accompanied her for safety. This was important to Gaius because the woods here are not safe. As if Gaius had known, the three are attacked by a whole horde of bandits. Arthur quickly realizes that they have no chance and orders them to run as fast as they can.
They have been running through the forest for a few minutes now and Mary, who is running behind Arthur, notices how her strength is slowly fading. Merlin is right behind her and the bandits are getting dangerously close.
Arthur seems to know his way around a bit. Suddenly he breaks away to the left and they enter a hollow in the forest. It's like a small ravine. To the left and right it has moss overgrown rocks that rise higher and higher. Arthur stops and tries to look over the edge to see if the pursuers are still there. Mary leans against one of the rocks, breathing heavily. Merlin asks, "Are they still after us?"
Arthur laughs, "I told you we were faster. The three of us are young and healthy..."
"Are you sure?"
"Why don't you ever trust me, Merlin?"
At that moment, the bandits come screaming through the trees.
Merlin takes Mary by the hand and they run on.
Suddenly, Arthur seems unsure of where to go. He seems to be considering whether to go left or right. But only for a few short seconds. He looks at Mary and Merlin and leads them to the left, down a narrow path. It is getting narrower and darker around them.
Merlin asks, "Where are we going?"
"Trust me!"
Merlin rolls his eyes. Mary looks back, and there are no more bandits to be seen. Maybe they've made it this time!
Suddenly Merlin stops and Mary bounces into him. He shouts, "Arthur!"
The prince looks around: "What are you doing?" He comes back and takes Mary by the hand, "Come on!"
They pass two huge statues, which are overgrown with moss and ivy. Now Mary knows where they are! Arthur pulls her further and deeper into the gorge. Merlin follows at some distance, looking around. Finally he catches up as Arthur slows down a bit.
Merlin asks, "What is this place?"
"The Valley of the Fallen Kings!" answer Arthur and Mary at the same time.
"Is it cursed?"
Arthur rolls his eyes, "No, if you're not superstitious."
"Is it?"
"It's a myth. They'll never follow us in here. They won't dare. Trust me!"
Merlin whispers, "If you say that one more time!"
Arthur lets go of Mary, since they don't have to run anymore. She looks around. She has never been here before, but has heard many stories about it. The forest seems to whisper here and Mary feels like she is being watched. Merlin will feel all this much more intensely.
Behind them, the screams of the bandits can suddenly be heard again. Arthur doesn't think twice, grabs Mary's hand tightly and runs off again. Merlin follows them. Mary is abruptly pulled to the ground by Arthur and she hits her head on a stone. Slightly dazed, she realizes that the prince has an arrow in his back between his shoulder blades. Merlin rushes to them and Arthur asks, "What was that?"
"An arrow!"
"An arrow? Oh good. For a moment I thought it was something bad."
Arthur faints. Mary and Merlin pull Arthur behind a large rock and camouflage themselves with leaves. The bandits hurry past them. They wait another moment until there is nothing to hear anymore.
Mary's head hurts and her vision is clouded. Nevertheless, she helps Merlin get the prince as comfortable as possible and build a fire. Merlin removes the arrow from Arthur's back and Mary tries to look at the wound. "This is deep, Merlin. He needs to get to Gaius. There's nothing I can do!" exhausted, she slumps against a stone.
Merlin looks at her with concern: "You hurt yourself, too."
Mary shakes her head, "It's not that bad."
"No, you're bleeding!"
Merlin moves next to her and runs his finger along her temple. She sees blood on his finger. "Oh, it'll just be a scratch. We have to take care of Arthur first."
Merlin nods and now uses magic to try to heal the wound in Arthur's back. Mary can still feel where he touched her. Her heart is beating up to her throat and is only slowly calming down.
Merlin now tries for the fourth time to heal the wound in Arthur's back. But nothing happens. The prince is pale and breathing shallowly. Mary has fallen asleep. The young sorcerer desperately washes Arthur's blood from his hands in a puddle of water and his tears mix with it. He feels hopeless.
"Tell me, why are you so sad?" Says a kind voice.
Merlin looks up in surprise and notices through his tears, an older man in front of him. "My friend, he's dying. I can't help him."
"Then don't waste your tears. For I can tell you that it is not yet his time to die. Do not be afraid. My name is Taliesin. Show me your friend!"
"My name is Merlin."
"I know who you are. The moment of our meeting has been written for many years. You are Emrys."
The old man kneels down in front of Arthur and turns him to see the wound. He says a magic word and his eyes light up. When he puts the prince back on his back, he already has more color in his face and breathes relaxed. "In a few hours he will be fully recovered."
"Are you sure?"
"If memory does not deceive me."
"What do you mean by that?"
"I want to show you something, Merlin."
Merlin's gaze falls on Mary, who is asleep, leaning against a stone. The old man follows his gaze, walking over to her and holding his hand over her wound. "You care a lot about that girl. I can sense that. She's not badly hurt. The rest will do her good. Come with me."
"Where?"
"You'll see!" Merlin follows the man.
Outside a cave entrance, Merlin asks again, "Where are we going? Why did you bring me here?" Merlin senses a power here and it buzzes in his ears.
"In due time, you will know."
Taliesin clears a path for Merlin to enter the cave and lets him lead the way. As Merlin enters the cave, the air shimmers. The walls shake and Merlin can feel the power of magic with every fiber of his body. There are thousands of crystals in the cave.
Merlin can barely breathe, "What is this place?"
"This is where magic began! It is the crystal cave."
Merlin is drawn to the crystals. As he looks directly at one, images start to show. The young warlock turns abruptly and closes his eyes.
"What do you see?" the man asks.
"Images, moments. I have seen something like this before. In the crystal of Neahtid."
"What you see here is exactly the same, for the Crystal of Neahtid was hewn from this cave. Look into them, Emrys. Look right at it. Much will be revealed."
Merlin turns back to the crystals. After a few seconds, he looks at the man, agitated, "No! Get me out of here. How do I get back to Arthur and Mary?"
"The future is hidden from almost everyone, Emrys. Not from you, though."
"No, I've been through this before."
"Maybe there's a reason you came here right now."
"What reason?"
"Only the crystals can tell you that. They show a diverse future that is yet to come. The secrets they reveal, Emrys are for you. For you alone. Look into them, Emrys! Look right into them! Do good with what you see."
Merlin turns slowly and goes a little deeper into the cave. He needs all the strength he has. His heart is beating up to his throat and the buzzing and whirring in the air is becoming almost unbearable. His eyes linger on a crystal that shows him images of the near future. A horse, dagger, Morgana...Merlin can't stand it. He closes his eyes and falls to his knees in exhaustion. When he opens his eyes again, he looks directly into another crystal. Morgana draws the dagger, a sleeping Uther...and then! Merlin puts his face in his shaking hands. "What was that?" he shouts into the cave. But the old man has disappeared.
When Mary awakens, she sees Merlin sitting by the extinguished fire. His eyes are wide open and he seems tense, frightened. Slowly she gets up and goes to him. When she puts her hand on his shoulder, he flinches and slips away. Mary pulls her hand back.
"He's been like that since I woke up." Happy, Mary sees that Arthur is well. He doesn't seem to notice anything more about his serious injury. So this can only mean, that Merlin managed to help with magic. But why was he so startled? He should be happy. Arthur takes Merlin's jacket and throws it in his face. "You look like a startled weasel."
"Oh yeah, well at least I don't look like a lazy toad. Let's go."
"You mean I look like a toad?"
"Yes. Maybe one day you'll turn into a handsome prince. But magic is forbidden, so probably not. Come on, let's go!" Merlin gets up and walks toward Camelot.
Arthur says, "Merlin! I'm giving the orders! Remember?"
"Sure. Are you two ready? Let's go."
Mary and Arthur look after him in amazement. He is acting extremely strange. Merlin walks unerringly ahead. He never speaks a word, never laughs, and never turns to look at them. Mary and Arthur follow him, at some distance. After a while Arthur can't stand it anymore and says: "What I don't understand, you said I had an arrow in my back. Then why do I only have a bruise from it?"
"I don't know!"
"Merlin. Did something happen that you're not telling me about?"
"No."
"Come on. I'm missing your usual prattle."
"Certainly making up for it."
"You still haven't answered my question."
"The arrow did not penetrate the armor. The fall caused you to lose consciousness."
"I see. I don't usually say things like that, but you did a good job." Merlin makes no reply and continues walking straight ahead. Arthur asks, "Did you hear what I just said? All right, maybe I should reward you for that. What do you want?"
"A little peace and quiet."
Mary shakes her head. The rest of the way home passes in absolute silence. None of the three speak.
Arthur later explains to the king why they have not come home for so long and he sends a patrol to hunt down the bandits. Arthur even mentions that his servant deserves praise for responding so well. Gaius looks at Merlin, who stands quietly. There is something different about him.
Later, as Gaius, Mary and Merlin sit together, Merlin tells of his experience in the crystal cave. He rubs his eyes tiredly: "Gaius, I can't get these images out of my head".
Gaius replies, "You were very lucky to see the Crystal Cave. Even before the Great Purge, sorcerers spoke of that place with reverence."
"The man who led me there, who is he?"
"You mean, who was he! He died about 300 years ago. Taliesin was a prophet of the ancient king. They say the crystal cave was the source of his prophecies."
"He told me...he said there was a reason why I was there at that moment. Why? It must mean that the events I saw are about to happen. Morgana is going to kill Uther."
"Merlin, you must be careful. The crystals are treacherous. The images may not have been what they seemed."
"So I do nothing?"
"Nothing suggests that your visions are about to become reality, does it?"
"No."
"Well, then, don't let that get to you."
"You're right."
Together, the three of them eat their dinner and don't say another word about what Merlin has seen.
The next morning, Arthur is up early. Merlin is surprised to see the prince already dressed, when he comes into the chambers. "You're up early!"
"It's Morgana's birthday. I still have to organize a present."
"What are you getting for her?"
"It's a secret."
"Come on, tell me!"
"A dagger!"
Merlin feels a chill run down his spine. In his mind's eye, he sees the diamond-studded dagger from the crystal. And as he walks across the castle courtyard a little later, he sees another vision from the crystal. He feels sick and his heart beats like crazy.
As quickly as he can, he goes to Gaius. Mary sits at a table and reads. Gaius is sorting herbs. They both look up as Merlin rushes in. "It is happening! The future I saw, it's beginning."
"Calm down, Merlin!" says Gaius calmly.
"I saw just now, Morgana wrestling with her horse, just as the crystals showed."
"Are you sure?"
"It was the same image."
"She rides all the time. It's not unusual to see her like that."
"It's not the only one. Arthur's gift for Morgana. He said it was a dagger."
"A dagger? Merlin, I think you're taking this too seriously. It could be any dagger."
Merlin doesn't feel understood. Mary feels sorry for him, but she too thinks that everything can't be as bad as Merlin thinks.
In the afternoon, Merlin comes to Arthur again. Arthur asks, "Are my clothes for the feast ready?"
"No..."
"No? Then what have you been doing? Very well, then, smooth my robes. Clean my shirts and polish my shoes."
He tosses clothes and shoes in Merlin's direction, who catches them with difficulty. His gaze falls on an oblong casket in front of Arthur on the table. Arthur follows his gaze: "Ah! Morgana's gift. What do you think of it?"
Arthur holds a plain, small dagger in front of Merlin's face. It looks nothing like the one from the crystal. Merlin is relieved. But it's still a dagger.
He says, "Yes, that's just what every woman wants, isn't it?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I'm no expert, but women do tend to like pretty things. Jewelry, for example." He takes the laundry and leaves Arthur.
Mary comes into Gaius's room that evening. She is wearing a pink dress and Gwen has put her hair up with flowers. Gaius looks at her with a smile. "Well, you've made yourself pretty."
At that moment Merlin comes out of the room, looks at her and stops. "You look beautiful, Mary! How am I doing?" He turns in a circle laughing.
Gaius says, "Your mood seems better than it did this morning."
"I saw Morgana's gift."
"The dagger?"
"It's very simple, a bit boring."
"So not like the one you saw?"
"No, it was ornate, diamond-studded. If I were Morgana, I think I'd be a little disappointed."
"Then you have nothing more to worry about."
"Right, I'll pretend I never met Taliesin from now on. I'm going to enjoy the party like everyone else."
"Even if it's for Morgana?"
Merlin's smile disappears for a moment. But then he says, "Come on Mary, let's go." Mary puts her hand in his Arm. She's glad he's back to being the upbeat, cheerful Merlin she knows.
Gaius calls after them, "Don't stay too long."
The party is boisterous and everyone is drinking and toasting. Mary and Merlin, with other servants, make sure the cups are never empty. But they are also laughing and enjoying the happy atmosphere.
Uther gives Morgana her gift. A beautiful necklace, which he immediately puts on her. Then Arthur hands her his gift: "Happy birthday!"
Morgana accepts the casket with a smile and opens it. Merlin leans toward Mary, who is standing next to him, "I wonder if he did organize jewelry. I told the prince that girls like jewelry more than a dagger."
Mary smiles, "You say that as an expert, on what girls want?"
Merlin laughs sheepishly. Morgana, however, pulls a dagger out of the casket and marvels at it. "It's beautiful! Thank you, Arthur!"
Mary notices how Merlin has gone all pale and is no longer smiling. "Merlin?" she asks softly. He doesn't seem to hear her, though, and looks incredulously at the dagger in Morgana's hands. Richly decorated and set with diamonds.
Arthur stands up and says to Merlin, "You are rarely right, Merlin, but this is one of those times. Women like beautiful things!"
Merlin doesn't seem to really notice the prince either. Before anyone notices, Mary takes Merlin by the arm and pulls him toward the door. "Merlin, please! Talk to me!"
After a while he looks at her and says, "That's the dagger I saw in the crystal. It has begun! It's coming true."
"We can't be sure."
"We have to stop it."
"How? We don't know, when it will happen or if it even will happen!"
"We have to watch her."
"Day and night?"
"I've been shown these visions for a reason."
Mary takes Merlin's face in her hands, "Merlin, this is crazy!"
"We'll take turns. She can't be left unobserved."
Merlin frees himself from Mary's hands and goes back into the hall.
When the feast is over, everyone has gone home or to their chambers, and the servants have finished cleaning up, Mary and Merlin slowly walk back to their rooms. Merlin stops under the stairs leading to Morgana's chambers. "I'll stay here and hide behind this canvas. That way I can see if she leaves her room. Promise me you will replace me at dawn."
Mary nods, "I will come. Please be careful!"
Merlin crawls behind the heavy fabric and Mary goes on alone. She doubts that she can sleep.
At midnight Merlin hears a noise. It is a door that has been opened. Morgana comes down the stairs and puts the dagger in her belt. She looks around, puts on her hood and walks down the hall. Merlin quickly picks himself up and follows her slowly and quietly.
Just as Morgana is about to go through a door, Merlin locks it with his magic. Morgana recoils and an iron fire torch falls over. Morgana takes a step backwards, loses her balance and falls down a narrow stone staircase. Motionless, she remains at the bottom.
"No!" Merlin runs down the stairs. He sees a bleeding wound on Morgana's forehead and she is breathing strained. Quickly, he turns and goes for help.
Mary has just fallen asleep tiredly when she is rudely shaken awake by her shoulder. When she looks up sleepily, Merlin is standing beside her bed, distraught. "Merlin!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't know who else to get. Please come with me quickly, something's happened."
He is already heading for the door again. Mary puts a blanket over her shoulders and follows Merlin into the cold hallway. Morgana is still unchanged at the bottom of the stairs. Mary rushes to her and takes a closer look at her injury. Merlin remains nervously standing next to her.
Mary looks at him with her blue eyes seriously and says, "Merlin, she has a head injury. I suspect a fracture of the skull. We need Gaius and men to carry her gently to him. I'll stay with her."
A short time later, Morgana is carried to Gaius' chambers. Gaius says, "I need water and bandages and yarrow. We need to stop the bleeding."
Mary nods, and gets what he asks for. Arthur carries Morgana in his arms and lays her on the bed Gaius has made ready.
Gaius looks at Morgana, "She's having trouble getting air!"
Merlin asks, "Dianthus?"
"Yes, and a preparation of pulmonaria."
Merlin looks confused. Mary has put down the water and the bandages. Now she takes Merlin by the hand and leads him to the table where the tinctures are made.
"Here, let me show you! Merlin, look at me! We need lungwort. Seven grams, finely ground, mixed with violets."
Merlin takes the mortar Mary holds out to him and begins to work. Arthur stands next to Gaius and asks, "How did this happen?"
"I need room, Arthur!"
"Yes, of course. Whatever you need. Just say it."
Arthur rushes out of the room to inform his father.
Gaius is stitching up the head wound and Gwen, who has also joined him, asks, "Is she going to be okay?"
"We're doing our best." replies Gaius, "I can heal her skin, Gwen, but her skull, it's broken. She's bleeding internally."
Gwen begins to cry. Mary looks around for Merlin, but he is no longer behind her. Quietly, she walks to his bedroom door, which is only ajar. She pushes it open and sees Merlin sitting on the edge of the bed with his head hanging down. Quietly she walks up to him and he looks at her. She sees so much pain in his eyes. Gently she sits down next to him and puts her hand on his, comfortingly.
He begins to speak, "I had to stop the future. I had to stop Morgana from killing Uther. This isn't how I wanted to do it!"
"It wasn't your fault, Merlin!"
"I stopped something much worse from happening. It's just...I wish it had gone differently." Mary's heart grows heavy. Seeing him so sad is unbearable. She puts her arm around his shoulders and pulls him close. He leans his head against her.
The next day, as Merlin walks through the castle, he encounters people's sadness everywhere. Gwen cries in Arthur's arms and when the prince comes to his chambers a little later, he can no longer think clearly because of his thoughts and worries about Morgana. Things fall out of his hand or he can't unbuckle his sword belt because his hands are shaking so much. Merlin takes the belt from him and Arthur drops into a chair. He sighs heavily.
Merlin says, "I'm sorry about Morgana. If Gaius could do anything, he would." "After all we did to save her. All that she survived. Losing her now, like this. I grew up with her. She's like a sister to me. I'd sacrifice my place on the throne for her so she could see another sunrise."
Affected, Merlin leaves the prince a little later and goes back to Gaius with his head hanging.
It is already dark again when the king comes over and sits by Morgana's bedside. Gaius has explained to him how she is. Merlin and Mary have retreated to Merlin's room. Mary is trying to read a book. She keeps looking anxiously at Merlin, who is sitting on the edge of the bed, resting his head in his hands. He is very quiet and she notices how he suffers.
The door to the physician's room is only ajar. So they can hear Uther and Gaius talking to each other.
Uther says, "I can't watch her die, Gaius."
"I wish there was something I could do."
"No. You don't understand. I can't lose her. No matter what, she can't die." Merlin slowly gets up and sits down next to Mary, close to the door.
Gaius says, "I will do what I can, sire."
"No, Gaius. Whatever it takes. Whatever. I don't care. You have to save her."
Mary and Merlin look at each other in amazement. The king says again, "Heal her. I don't care by what means. There must be something in all those books you have. Anything from the Old Religion?"
"Do you mean..."
"Magic, yes..."
"I know how dear she is to you, sire, but surely you don't want to risk everything for her?"
"Gaius, you don't understand! There's something you need to know. Something I haven't told anyone. Morgana is my daughter."
Mary gasps softly. Uther continues, "It happened when Gorlois was fighting in the northern plains. Her mother Vivian was lonely."
"I understand, sire," Gaius replies quietly.
"I have said enough. The people must never know who Morgana really is, for Arthur's sake."
"I assure you, sire, her secret is safe with me." The king leaves.
After a short time, Gaius comes into Merlin's room and looks at his wards sitting on the floor. Merlin says, "That explains everything. No wonder he searched for her for a year."
"Now we know why she can do no wrong!"
Merlin leaves the physician's chambers. Mary gets up from the floor and looks at Gaius, "He can't stand everyone grieving."
"No, I know. Let's leave him. He'll need some fresh air and then he'll be back. Will you help me watch Morgana for a bit."
"Of course!"
It is already dark when Merlin returns. Gwen is sitting with Morgana and Gaius is talking to her. Mary sits by the fire and listens in on the conversation. Gaius says, "Her breathing is getting weaker. She will be gone by morning."
Gwen begins to cry. Merlin walks past everyone, into his room. Mary notices that he is completely soaked from the rain. After some time, she takes a blanket and knocks on his door. "Merlin? May I come in?"
Slowly, she opens the door. He is still sitting in the chair in his wet clothes, shivering from the cold. His head rests in his hands. Mary walks over to him and puts the blanket over his shoulders. He does not react. Quietly, she leaves the room again and goes to comfort Gwen.
It is the middle of the night when Merlin comes out of his room and looks around. Mary is asleep in front of the fire and Gaius is dozing in the chair next to Morgana's bed. Quietly, so as not to wake them both, he takes his jacket and goes out. He saddles a horse and rides to a plain, outside Camelot. There he calls the dragon. It doesn't take long and Kilgharrah appears and lands in front of the warlock: "You called me, young warlock? And for what reason do I have the pleasure this time?"
"I was in the crystal cave. I saw Morgana threatening Uther's life."
"That doesn't surprise me."
"I stopped her."
"Changing the future is no small thing, Merlin. Doing so is very dangerous."
"Yes, and the result is that Morgana is dying."
"Then you should be glad!"
Merlin pauses. Then he looks directly at the dragon and says, "I want you to help me save her!"
"Merlin, haven't you learned anything?"
"I didn't want to kill her. I wanted to prevent the future that would have happened otherwise. To prevent Uther's death so that Camelot would not perish."
"I will not cure her!"
"She is Uther's daughter."
"Yes."
"You knew. Why didn't you tell me?"
"It doesn't change anything."
"What she was going to do, I stopped her. There is no need for others to suffer."
"The witch must die, as she should have long ago. I will not save her."
Merlin raises his voice, "I am a Dragonlord, you cannot refuse me."
"You dare to treat me this way? And abuse your power like this?"
"I command it."
"Very well! But I warn you, the evil that follows is your doing, and your doing alone."
The dragon lowers his magic in a blast of air at Merlin, as he has done before. Merlin can feel the power coming to him. The dragon spreads its wings and disappears into the night sky.
When Merlin returns, Gwen is sitting next to Morgana and Mary is making her some tea. Merlin walks right up to Gwen and says, "I'll stay with her. Go, and lie down for a bit. Sleep. Come on, you must be exhausted!"
"But if she wakes up..."
"Then I'll call you."
Merlin escorts Gwen to the door and closes it behind her. As he turns, Mary looks at him questioningly. "What?" He asks.
"Merlin, I know you! What are you going to do?"
"I have a way to heal her, Mary!"
"Heal?"
"Yes!"
"With magic, perhaps?"
"I can't stand the sadness of people any longer!"
"I know."
Mary lowers her eyes. Merlin says no more and instead sits down in the chair next to Morgana's bed. He concentrates and holds his hand over the injury on her skull. He begins to cast a spell and Mary sees the bones of the skull straighten and the wound disappear.
She looks at Merlin in disbelief, "Where did you get this power?" Morgana breathes a liberated sigh and gets color in her face. Merlin gives no answer to Mary's question, gets up and goes to his room.
When Gaius returns the next morning from gathering herbs at night, he is surprised to see the king in his chambers. He is even more surprised to find Morgana awake and well and sitting up in bed.
Happy, Uther looks at Gaius and says, "I would never have believed...truly a miracle."
Gaius nods in surprise and thinks to himself, that only Merlin can be behind this. The king takes Gaius aside and whispers, "Thank you, Gaius. I knew you wouldn't let me down."
"I assure you, Sire, I have done nothing."
"Of course you didn't. I understand. I won't ask any questions. But I will not forget this, Gaius."
Gaius searches for Merlin and finds the young man perched on a stone wall. Resting his head in his hands, he looks distraught and deep in thought. The physician sits down next to him. Merlin looks up and says, "I couldn't bear all that suffering."
"I know. But you're playing with things that are too powerful for you."
Merlin puts his head back in his hands.
Mary accompanies Lady Morgana to her chambers. The king follows them. She beds Morgana comfortably and leaves them alone. In the antechamber she prepares some more water and some cloths. She can hear the conversation between Morgana and the king.
Uther says: "I could never let you die. I think my will saved you."
"You have always been so good to me. I am grateful."
"You and Arthur mean everything to me."
"I couldn't ask for a better guardian. Being so close to death has made me realize how important you and Arthur are to me!"
Mary frowns and takes a step closer to the door, which is open a crack. Morgana continues talking, "How close we are."
"Yes."
"You're like a father to me."
Uther kisses Morgana's hands. "Yes."
"I wish people knew that!"
"They do."
"Not really."
"Of course they do!"
"In people's eyes, I'm nothing but your ward, a guest."
"What's important is what we feel. That's more important than what people think. I must let you rest."
Mary hurries out of the room before the king comes out. Morgana must have heard the conversation between Gaius and the king, despite her injury. She knows she is the king's daughter, Mary is sure of it. And that makes her even more dangerous than previously believed. She wants to share this with Merlin and Gaius, but can't find either of them.
As it dims, she goes to her room. When the warning bells sound, she is frightened and rushes out of the room. At the same time as Gaius and Merlin, she arrives at the prince's chamber, who is crouching in front of a guard lying dead on the ground. Arthur says to a guard, "We must raise the drawbridge and search the castle. I'll tell the king."
Gaius kneels to the dead man. He had been carrying a tray with a jug of wine, which is now spread on the floor like a pool of red blood. Gaius lifts one of the dead man's hands and the wine drips down it onto the floor. Mary sees Merlin take a step back and lean ashen against the wall. There is a roaring in his ears and his heart is beating up to his throat. He knows the image of the dripping wine from the crystal.
Mary approaches Merlin with concern and asks, "Merlin? What's wrong?"
"That was the next image I saw in the crystal. I didn't stop anything. I just let it get this far."
Gaius and Mary exchange a look. Merlin suspects something bad and makes his way to Morgana's room.
Mary wants to follow him, but Gaius holds her back, "Leave him. Help me move the dead man here."
Merlin rushes into Morgana's room without knocking and just sees her put the dagger in her belt. She turns around: "What are you doing here?"
"Arthur sent me to watch over you. He's worried about the intruder."
"I don't need you!"
Merlin gets in her way, "He was pretty insistent."
Morgana wants to push Merlin aside, but he takes her hand and won't let go. Her eyes suddenly light up and she shouts, "Get out of my way!"
Merlin is thrown against the wall and remains unconscious on the floor. A candle also falls over and a wall curtain catches fire. Morgana smiles wickedly and leaves her room.
Mary is just returning to check on Merlin when Morgana walks past her. She does not dignify Mary with a glance. She looks hostile and determined. Mary's concern for Merlin increases. She quickly walks in the direction Morgana came from.
She sees smoke coming from Morgana's room and rushes in. She finds Merlin on the floor. Beside him, the fire is ablaze. She quickly pulls him away from the fire and bends over him. Suddenly he opens his eyes. Startled, he looks at her. "Morgana, where is she?"
"I just saw her. She was walking toward the king's chambers."
Merlin stands up determinedly. Mary holds him back by the arm and looks at him pleadingly, "Merlin, she left you here to die. Don't go after her!"
"I have to, Mary! She'll kill the king!"
Merlin tears himself away and runs after Morgana.
As Merlin enters the king's chambers, Morgana stands over the sleeping king and raises her dagger for a killing thrust. Merlin hides behind a pillar and explodes the windows with his magic. Morgana drops her dagger out of fright, which is hurled under the bed. The king also startles and sees Morgana standing in front of his bed. "What is happening?"
Morgana quickly falls into character and says in fright, "There was a fire. I was afraid. I wanted to be with you. You're the only one I feel safe with."
Uther takes Morgana in his arms. Merlin quietly sneaks out of the room.
Later, Merlin sits at the table with Gaius. Mary warms herself in front of the fire. Gaius sits down across from Merlin, "You saved the king's life."
"Just about. I thought I could change the future, instead I caused it. I made it happen."
"What you did was dangerous, even for someone as gifted as you. But what's done is done. There are more important things to worry about."
Merlin looks at Gaius questioningly. "Mary told me that Morgana knows the truth."
Merlin looks at Mary, "About what?"
She replies, "She knows that the king is her father. That explains why she acted so quickly."
Gaius says, "Arthur must be careful."
"Why?"
"Morgana is of royal blood. If Uther were to die, only Arthur would stand between her and the crown of Camelot."
