Chapter 9: Ember Island
The Misfits sailed onward, now very close to their goal. The cluster of Dragon Balls was dead ahead and Bulma spied an island in the distance. As they approached they could see large buildings and rock formations littered around the island.
"What's the plan?" Zika asked.
"The Dragon Radar claims that the three Dragon Balls are in that tall tower." Bulma said as she pointed up to a massive black tower.
"So we just gotta get there and beat up whoever has the balls." Asuka said, cracking his knuckles.
"The soldiers that attacked us in Oakfield had some impressive weaponry, we should expect a heavy battle." Mugen stated as he stared at the island.
The ship bobbed closer and closer to the shore and Yasui dropped the anchor. Mugen and Zika furled the sails and the Misfits stared around at the island from the deck. Asuka leapt off the ship and down to the shore, the others following close behind him.
"Asuka." Mugen said, drawing his sword.
"Yeah." Asuka looked up at the cliff that ran parallel to the shoreline where more than a dozen soldiers stood on the edge, aiming their rifles down at the Misfits.
One of the soldiers fired a rocket down and Bulma knocked it aside with a gust of wind. The Misfits dashed down the shore as the soldiers opened fire at them. Mugen called for the Flying Nimbus and jumped on it, flying up the cliff and attacking the soldiers.
"Mugen!" Bulma called after him.
"He'll be fine." Asuka assured her, "He'll catch up with us."
The Misfits continued down the shore as Mugen ripped into the soldiers. The soldiers were cramped together and struggled to use their guns as Mugen skipped around while swinging wicked arcs through them. Arms, legs and heads were removed from bodies and Mugen wiped them out. He heard a Transponder Snail ringing and he snatched it up.
He answered, "Yo."
"Did you take them down?" A voice spoke from the snail.
"Just about. They're fighting back but not well enough." Mugen said with a grin as he dropped the snail on a corpse. He jumped back on the Flying Nimbus and took off.
Asuka smashed a gate open and they ran into a compound where soldiers stood waiting. The soldiers seemed to be surprised as the Misfits charged at them. Asuka, Yasui, Zika and Hama struck down soldiers as Bulma shocked others with her baton. More soldiers piled out of a building and Bulma lobbed a grenade that exploded and took them out. The Misfits moved on and dashed up slippery stone steps as they made their way toward the tower.
They came to another gate and Asuka smashed it open. Zika and Hama leapt forward and tore into a group of soldiers as Yasui dashed to back them up. Asuka hurled a Chop-Chop Rocket that struck a sniper that was crouched up on a roof. The man fell from the roof and struck the ground hard as Asuka yanked his arm back. The Flying Nimbus zoomed down toward them and Mugen leapt from it, ripping through four soldiers with a horizontal slash. The Misfits crushed through more soldiers and charged onward.
Pilaf nervously twiddled his thumbs on his throne. He looked at Fortune Teller Linh and said, "The reports said they were dead but they're charging up my stairs!"
Linh giggled softly, "No need to fret, Pilaf, you still have an ace up your sleeve."
He laughed nervously, "And what about the Dragon Balls?"
"The fools brought the other four straight to us." She pointed at the three balls on a short altar, "Give me two and take the other in the suit with you."
Pilaf launched himself from his throne and grabbed the Dragon Balls off the altar. He placed one in his pocket and handed the other two to Fortune Teller Linh.
The Misfits barged through the front door of the tower and clashed into a group of soldiers. Yasui and Mugen leapt toward the stairs and ripped through soldiers descending the steps. Zika and Hama launched their Fang Over Fang and bounced around the room as the nailed down soldiers.
Bulma checked the Dragon Radar, "The balls are splitting up! One is still in the tower but two are moving away from here!" She turned and quickly dashed back through the door.
"Yasui!" Asuka called out and Yasui sped after her.
Mugen dashed up the steps and Zika and Hama bounded after him. Asuka watched Bulma and Yasui zoom off on the nimbus and he followed the others up the stairs. They raced up the steps and came to the second floor. Five soldiers wielding swords dashed at them and attacked them as they reached the floor. Asuka let the swords cut through him and reattached his pieces as he dashed onward. Mugen clashed blades with two of the swordsmen and ferociously ripped into them, snapping through their swords and cleaving into their bodies.
One of the swordsmen slashed Hama in the side and Zika struck him back with his Wolf Fang Fist. He ducked under a slash and dropped a smoke pellet, smoke erupting and filling the corridor. Zika and Hama bounded together and slammed into the swordsmen with their Fang Over Fang, ricocheting between them with vicious strikes.
"Mugen, go on. I need to take care of Hama." Zika said as the smoke cleared and he tended to Hama's injury. Mugen dashed down the corridor and followed after Asuka.
Bulma and Yasui zoomed through the sky after a hovercraft carrying two Dragon Balls. They pulled up next to the hovercraft and looked through the glass at Fortune Teller Linh. She looked alarmed and swerved the hovercraft to smash into them. Bulma moved the nimbus up and above the hovercraft, Yasui hopped down and slammed a kick through the domed glass window and Linh swerved dramatically and dive bombed at the ground. Yasui slipped from the hovercraft and latched onto the nimbus as Bulma flew after Linh. Bulma blasted a gale of wind that rocked the hovercraft and it smashed against a rock on the shore, a fiery explosion erupting.
The duo dropped down and jumped onto the shore and stared at the burning wreckage. "Holy shit, you totally killed that lady." Yasui said.
Bulma shrugged and popped a fire extinguisher from a DynoCap and sprayed the wreckage down, "She had the Dragon Balls." She rummaged through the hovercraft and grabbed the two Dragon Balls, the Two and Three Star. Bulma wiped them down and put them in her bag, "Let's go get the last ball, Yasui."
Asuka and Mugen arrived on the fourth floor and stopped in their tracks. Standing in the large open room was Pilaf in a large mech suit!
"That's so cool!" Asuka shouted and Pilaf aimed the mech's left arm forward, a large cylinder spinning rapidly.
Mugen and Asuka skipped different directions as Pilaf fired his machine gun from the arm, bullets ripping into the floor and walls. Asuka used Iron Body and hurled a Chop-Chop Rocket that struck the mech in the chest, he yanked his arm back and Shaved around as Pilaf blasted a rocket from the mech's right arm at him. The rocket exploded and blew a hole in the wall as Mugen skipped behind the mech, slashing into the exposed area behind its left knee. Pilaf spun around quickly and struck Mugen back with a solid punch.
Asuka Shaved at the mech and barraged heavy blows into its chest. He separated his upper body and flew upward to evade a punch from the mech and a cannon popped out of its shoulder. The cannon blasted Asuka's upper body and sent him flying backward, launching him through the hole in the wall! Asuka's legs stumbled and fell to the ground as his upper body fell out of his range.
Pilaf blasted rockets at Mugen, they exploded wickedly as he skipped around the room. Mugen dashed forward and leapt into the air, spinning between bullets as he plunged his sword down into the left shoulder joint of the mech. A second cannon popped out of the mech's other shoulder and fired at Mugen. He skipped off the mech and dodged the blast, leaving his sword stuck in the mech. Pilaf tried to aim the machine gun left arm but couldn't move it properly! Mugen dashed to his right and kept on Pilaf's left as he moved quickly to dodge more rockets.
Zika and Hama dashed into the room and slammed into the mech with their Fang Over Fang and Hama bit the hilt of Mugen's sword, yanking it out of the mech and tossed it to Mugen. He caught his sword and dashed forward as Pilaf blasted more rockets that exploded all around. The floor groaned and shattered after taking so much damage, dropping them down to the third floor. Zika and Hama landed on their feet and charged the mech as it stumbled down the corridor. The cannons on the mech's shoulders fired and blasted Zika down! Hama bit the collar of Zika's jacket and pulled him away from the fight as Mugen stood up and coughed.
"Thanks for bringing me the Dragon Balls, I appreciate it." Pilaf squeaked through a speaker in the mech.
Mugen gripped his sword tightly and dashed straight at the mech. Pilaf aimed the right arm and fired rockets but nothing happened. Pilaf panicked and saw that he had used all of the rockets already! Mugen leapt in the air and struck the mech in the chest with his blade, denting but cutting through its armor. Pilaf slammed a heavy kick into Mugen and he crashed hard against the ground. Mugen laid on his back and smiled as he looked up.
Bulma and Yasui flew through the hole in the fourth floor with Asuka hanging from the bottom of the nimbus! Rubble shifted as Asuka's legs jumped up and Asuka let go of the nimbus. He plummeted down and slammed a heavy punch into the top of the mech's head, it stumbled forward as Asuka reassembled himself and helped Mugen up off the ground. The nimbus flew down to the third floor, Yasui pounced at the mech and slammed a savage kick into the dent on its chest. The mech stumbled back with a larger dent on its chest and Bulma zapped it with her baton. Sparks flew from the mech's left shoulder and Bulma tossed a grenade at it, it exploded and rocked the mech hard. The mech stumbled into a corner and Asuka Shaved at it and barraged a storm of crushing blows at the mech's chest, ripping it open like a can of sardines.
Asuka reached inside the mech's chest and ripped Pilaf out! He dropped him and the little man landed on his ass as he fell. Pilaf jumped up and turned to run but Yasui slammed a kick into his face to stop him.
Pilaf hit the ground and began crying, "How dare you do this to me! I'm Pilaf, I'm gonna be the King of the entire world!"
Yasui lifted his left foot up and stomped down hard on Pilaf's head. Pilaf stopped moving and Yasui searched his pockets, finding the One Star Ball in his coat. Yasui tossed the Dragon Ball to Bulma, she put it in her bag and the Misfits walked slowly toward the stairs to the second floor.
Zika sat against the wall by the stairs with Hama, both a little banged up. "Did we win?" Zika asked with a smile.
"Duh." Asuka said and smiled widely.
Zika and Hama got up and walked with the rest of the Misfits down the stairs of the tower. They didn't see or hear any more soldiers and hoped the rest of them had run away. They walked out of the front door and Bulma sat down. The others sat down beside her as she dug six Dragon Balls from her bag. Asuka pulled the Six Star Ball from his bag and handed it to her.
"What now?" Mugen asked.
Yasui looked at Bulma, "Yeah, how does this work?"
Bulma piled the seven balls on the ground and called out, "Eternal Shenron, by your name I summon you forth!" The Dragon Balls glowed a powerful and magnificent yellow and a large beam of light shot up to the sky, causing day to become night. The beam of light crackled and turned wildly as it slowly morphed into a long green dragon, twisting around in the black sky and moving its head down to look upon the Misfits.
"I am Shenron." The eternal dragon spoke with a powerful voice, "I shall grant you a wish, now speak!"
The Misfits stared up at Shenron in awe, all smiling. Bulma turned to Yasui and nodded her head. Yasui shouted at Shenron, "Please, will you restore the lives of everyone who was killed in Oakfield?"
"Your wish is granted." Shenron spoke simply as he glowed brightly and erupted into wisps of light.
The Dragon Balls began floating up in the air as they turned to stone. The Misfits watched as the balls spun high into the sky and scattered in seven different directions! The sunlight returned to the world and the Misfits cheered and jumped around in excitement, Yasui crying tears of joy.
"What now, Yasui?" Asuka asked.
"What do you mean?" Yasui responded slowly.
"Your village and loved ones are back. Are you gonna go back home now?"
Yasui smiled and wiped his eyes, "No way, let's go to the Grand Line!"
