A/N:
This is a coffee shop AU based on a few of the omake chapters and takes place in modern times. Some of the ages have been changed to better suit the story. Everything will slowly get explained, but please comment with any questions!
As she walked through the town, Yona could feel the heat of someone staring her down just out of her view. She could feel the stranger's stare like lasers burning into her back. It was awkward, and uncomfortable, and it was making her especially anxious. Why wouldn't it? 'Please leave me alone.' Her silent pleas were ignored as the harrowing feeling continued.
The mid-afternoon rush was, unfortunately, not a rush at all. Even though it was the weekend, there weren't many people out shopping and those who were, were sparsely dispersed throughout the stores and across the sidewalks. Yona was one of those lone shoppers, making her way through the relaxed scattering of shoppers with their own distractions and focus.
What only made Yona feel worse was that this wasn't the first time she'd felt like someone was watching her. It had been ongoing for weeks before this, noticing a similar presence or figure skulking around her from a distance. At first she thought that whoever was doing this would have lost interest by now, but their persistence proved otherwise.
Yona looked around as she walked, scanning her surroundings, watching in case she could spot the person who was following her without being suspicious and them catching on. Though on second thought, maybe constantly looking around made her more suspicious. None the less, nothing and no one else looked out of place.
'I'm almost there.'
She could feel her heart pound in her chest as she swiftly made her way to a familiar spot. Her only saving grace was that she was familiar with the area.
Nearby was the only place Yona knew that she would be safe at. Jae-ha's cafe was only a five minute walk away normally, and at this pace, she might even make record time. Yona knew she would be safe at his cafe. There was no way he, or Yoon for that matter, would let any harm come to her if they had any say in it. Afterall, they had all been friends for some time now. Jae-ha's experience in mixed martial arts put any person with ill-intent at a loss, but on the other hand, Yoon was simply a very protective person by nature, even though he had no fighting skills.
As what felt like the longest few minutes of her life came to a close, the crimson haired girl looked around for the person watching her one last time before she stepped through the door, the chime announcing her entrance. She into the cool air conditioned cafe, and into safety. The cafe was a calm space with light jazz playing with dark grey walls and mix of tables and lounge chairs which gave it a cozy feeling, already beginning to put the girl at ease.
"Yona! It's a pleasure to see you, how are you doing today?" A carefree and beaming Jae-ha asked as he was already wiping down the already clean bar counter and readied a menu for her. Was he always this happy? Or was she just so on edge that everything seemed suspicious right now?
Yona took a seat at the bar - away from the windows where anyone could easily peer in and spot her. "I was just out shopping and thought I'd stop by." She told them, anxiety still laced through her tone, on top of still trying to calm herself down from the rush she'd felt and the brisk walk that took her here. Jae-ha passed her a menu, to which she waved her hand and refused it, lightly pressing the menus back into his hand. She'd been here enough to know what she wanted already. "Can I have a chamomile tea, please?" She asked with a sweet smile and a glance over to Yoon who stood near their tea station to her left.
"Absolutely!" Jae-ha answered with pleasure and nodded toward Yoon who had already begun preparing the drink.
Yona thought about all the times over the years she'd come to visit her friends at the cafe, when she came to take a break during a shopping spree, or after a long study session to try and curb her anxieties and stress. She couldn't be sure exactly when she started visiting the cafe, but she'd become friends with both Jae-ha and Yoon through it, even Shin-ah and Zeno quickly became familiar faces. She even used the space as a meetup location where she could spend time with Lily, when her friend wasn't busy. Of course Kija and Hak often visited too. This cafe was like a safe haven or a headquarters of sorts where they could all easily meet up and spend time together.
The chime of the door rang as it opened as Lili appeared from the other side. "Sorry I'm late! My father almost didn't let me leave at all."
The rest of the group sat around two tables pushed together, and a circle of chairs taken from across the cafe. Kija, Shin-ah, Zeno, Hak, and Yona were sitting around the tables with their drinks and snacks, while Jae-ha and Yoon stayed back behind the counter until any customers who weren't their friends came through.
Yona waved Lili over and Hak cleared the remaining seat free their school bags. Lili sat down to join the group as they continued their conversation, revelling in the fact that the whole group was all finally in the same place after so long.
As Yona began to calm down, Jae-ha set down a teacup in front of her paired with a slice of a delicate looking white cake topped with strawberries and whipped cream.
"What's this?" She could only ask with a confused expression, looking at the delicious cake she hadn't ordered.
Jae-ha sat down in the seat beside her on the customer's side of the counter. "You looked scared when you came in. There's nothing like a slice of cake to cheer a pretty girl up." He told her with his signature smile as he passed her a small fork to go with her dessert.
Yona let out a little giggle, coupled with a soft smile that brought her one step closer to comfort, and away from the frightening experience and ominous stranger outside. "Thanks." She said in a gentle tone as she set the fork on the plate and took a sip of the chamomile tea that immediately began to warm her from the inside out.
"So, what's worrying you?" Jae-ha prompted her without hesitation, intending to get to the bottom of her concerning expression and sudden entrance earlier. Sure, she'd come in before full of stress, or overwhelmed by something that was happening like Hak relentlessly teasing her, but today was different. The way she'd come into the cafe earlier was unlike any other time he'd seen her.
Yona was taken back at how forward he was. Usually, Jae-ha would sugar coat a tough question, making sure the person he was asking was okay, and leaving them an out if they weren't comfortable telling him. Perhaps he understood how anxious she was when she came into the cafe.
She drew in a deep breath and slowly let it out as she took a moment to carefully prepare her answer, debating if she should even tell him at all so not to worry either him or Yoon. She bit her lip before making the decision to tell him the truth. "It just feels…" She paused, seeing Jae-ha waiting for her answer with bated breath. "It's like someone has been watching me lately, following me even." Her explanation was hushed, and she started to mumble toward the end, embarrassed that she could be the victim in such a case. Even if she couldn't control other people's actions and it wasn't her fault, she still felt guilty as if something she did had directly caused this to happen.
"That's a serious claim, are you certain?" Jae-ha followed up her explanation, worry already furrowing his brow, hand at the ready to bring out his phone to call for the authorities.
The young girl nodded, "I don't know who it is, or what they look like, but I'm confident someone's been following me." She told the pair as they listened intently.
Yoon's brown now furrowed, and disgust spread across his face at the person who was doing this to his beloved friend. Both Yoon and Jae-ha's concerns had raised, the atmosphere growing tense.
"How long has this person been following you?" Yoon's anger started to grow and show through his voice and body language. Though the boy could hardly fight to save his own life, yet he looked like he was ready to jump the counter and take on the unknown foe right then and there.
Yona shrugged, she wasn't completely sure when it started, only when she noticed it was happening. A similar situation had happened just over a year ago with Tae-Jun when he had been watching her from a distance. Though that was more of a misunderstanding and much more harmless. Luckily her class president and childhood friend, Soo-won, had noticed and was able to straighten things out for her. It turned out that Tae-Jun had been wanting to confess to Yona, but didn't know how to approach her and ended up watching her every moment he could, waiting for the right opportunity. Her current situation, however, was different. It had gone on far longer, and she was being followed everywhere she went, and not just at school like Tae-Jun had done.
Yona scurried into the half-empty classroom to her seat. She looked back at the door suddenly to see a head duck just out of sight. 'Who was that?' She brought a hand up to her head to block whoever was in the hall from seeing her face.
Of the few people still in the classroom at lunch was Soo-won, the class representative. He was responsible for organizing the students around events, introducing any new students, helping with school work where he could, and generally supporting his fellow classmates.
Soo-won approached Yona at her desk, obligated as the class leader to make sure all his classmates were okay during school hours. "Yona is everything alright?"
Yona looked up to him as he stood over her, her brows turned up with worry and unable to hide her panic. Normally she would have already gone to Hak for help, but she was trying to be independent! ...And Hak had already graduated. "I think someone's following me. I see him everywhere around school just looking at me."
"Is he in the hall now?"
Yona nodded.
That was all it took for Soo-won to leave the classroom to find the person intimidating Yona.
When he came back, Soo-won was accompanied by another boy, Tae-Jun, who was one year their senior.
Soo-won gestured for Tae-Jun to talk to Yona. "Tell her what you told me."
Tae-Jun looked around the room, eyes darting from corner to corner, looking anywhere but at Yona herself. "I, uh…" He stumbled over his words, trying to gather his courage to tell her. "I'm sorry Yona, I was just looking for the right time to tell you that I.." His voice trailed off again and into a mumble. "That I… I like… you…" He let the confession sit for a minute before continuing, hoping she would respond. "I didn't mean to scare you, I'm sorry." He bowed deeply, and quickly turned to leave without Yona having responded to him at all.
"I think it's been about three weeks?" She grimaced as she told the friends who eagerly awaited her answer.
Suddenly alarm bells began to ring in both Yoon and Jae-ha's heads as Yona explained her situation.
"Yona my dear, this is very serious! Have you told the police, or even your teachers?" Jae-ha's face spelled worry, knowing the person that Yona had become over the last two years. He knew that she wouldn't want to bother anyone at the risk of causing an inconvenience, even if it might be a bigger inconvenience - or in this case a danger - to herself.
Yona shook her head. "I was hoping that eventually they would just loose interest and stop." She mumbled, wishing that she could melt away and this would all come to an end with all of her problems would fading away. She'd grown to hate causing problems or making people take care of her, she experienced enough of that as a child. Ever since she started high school she'd been trying her best to be independent. Though she was limited and her school's rules forbade her from working a part-time job, Yona had learned a lot about what life really is from all her friends after having been a sheltered child for so long.
