Chapter 39: Scarlet Eye
Raizen appeared beside Renji and swung a swift left hook that Renji evaded and jumped back. Renji spun his Power Pole around and smacked it into Raizen's chest. They exchanged a mad flurry of blows and Renji slammed one of the ends of his Power Pole up into Raizen's chin. Raizen stumbled back and shot three Flying Finger Pistols that Renji easily dodged.
A blood red moon shone down on the desert landscape as Raizen steadied himself and Renji spun his Power Pole around. Raizen grinned and Shaved around quickly and leapt at Renji from behind, he swung and Renju used Paper Act to bend away from Raizen's blow.
Renji elongated his Power Pole and slammed it into the side of Raizen's head. Raizen spun around and Renji Moon Walked up into the air, he hurled serrated diamond chains down that Raizen evaded. The chains slammed into the ground and sent dust and chunks of rock flying.
Raizen leapt into the air and exchanged swift blows with Renji as they fell down to the ground. They leapt away from each other and Renji swung a heavy diamond chain that Raizen ducked beneath. Raizen punched the ground and a smokescreen of dust and dirt swallowed the surrounding area.
Renji's scarlet eye looked around quickly and noticed a slight shift in the smoke to his left. Renji used Iron Body the moment before Raizen appeared and struck a savage punch into Renji's left side. Renji was sent flying and skipping across the ground as Raizen laughed heartily.
"That one must have ruptured one of your lungs!" Raizen barked.
Renji stood up and swatted the dirt off of his shoulders. He Moon Walked up into the air and sent a hail of Tempest Kicks flying down at Raizen. Raizen dashed around quickly and leapt up into the air. Renji spun his Power Pole around and slammed it down onto the top of Raizen's head.
Raizen landed on the ground and stumbled around as Renji remained in the air, slowly bouncing in place. Renji hurled bladed chains from his arms, they rained down and stabbed into the ground as Raizen danced around them. Renji yanked on the chains and propelled himself down at Raizen.
They exchanged savage blows and Raizen wrapped his left arm in thick muscle and slammed a wicked punch into Renji's chest. Renji stumbled back and ducked under a wide swing from Raizen. Renji jabbed Raizen twice in the gut with Finger Pistols and Shaved away. Raizen Shaved after Renji and they dashed around the desert quickly.
Raizen swung his left arm at Renji who deflected the blow with his Power Pole. Renji felt his aura flowing as he clenched his left fist and slammed a powerful punch into Raizen's chest. Raizen coughed and stumbled back as a wide grin appeared on his face.
Raizen stared at Renji's eye and laughed wickedly, "This is my favorite thing about fighting, Denying people like you the satisfaction of revenge!"
Renji lifted his left arm slightly and the chains buried in the ground erupted from the dirt and stabbed into Raizen's chest and back! Raizen struggled to rip the chains out of himself as Renji Shaved forward and slammed another powerful punch into Raizen's chin. Raizen stumbled back and sent a kick into Renji's right side.
Raizen wrapped his chest, arms and legs in thick muscle and leapt at Renji. They exchanged rapid blows and Raizen jabbed a thick Finger Pistol into Renji's left arm. Renji skipped back and elongated his Power Pole as he swung it into Raizen's left knee.
Renji flexed the fingers on his left hand to make sure they all still worked and smiled. Raizen popped his left knee and cracked his knuckles.
"Ya' know, I'm starting to remember your people!" Raizen laughed and said, "Some of them with red eyes like yours were pretty strong! Most of them were pathetic and weak but a few really made an impression on me."
"All of you made an impression on me as well." Renji said and clenched his jaw.
Raizen Shaved at Renji and swung a heavy right cross that Renji stopped with his bare palm! A sudden force redirected at Raizen and his attack blasted himself away from Renji as blood shot from his arm.
Renji skipped at Raizen and barraged five Finger Pistols into his chest and slammed a swift punch into his jaw. Raizen spat blood and kicked Renji square in the chest. Renji leapt up into the air and slammed his Power Pole down into Raizen's right shoulder. Raizen leapt up into the air and struck Renji in the chin with a powerful blow.
Renji flew through the air and struck the ground hard. His Power Pole skipped across the ground away from him as he gasped for breath and coughed roughly. His vision began to darken and he shook his head quickly.
He was eight years old again and ran over the corpses of his family. The peace and quiet of Scarlet Village came to a sudden and horrid end when ten phantoms arrived.
A large man with wild hair and dark skin struck down the Kurta with savage blows that shattered their bodies. A tall broad shouldered man with black hair and long earlobes fired his fingers like machine guns and mowed down the fleeing Kurta as the village burned. A woman with long pink hair in a matching fur coat swung her arms wildly and split members of the Kurta into small pieces as she laughed..!
The phantoms fell onto the clan and ripped their eyes from their corpses. The Kurta Clan fought back but were ultimately massacred. Renji watched as his family was slaughtered and a tall man in a kimono wielding a sword came to his house. He cut down his parents and siblings and Renji grabbed a knife and stabbed the man in the leg. The phantom swordsman struck Renji down and stomped on him until he stopped moving.
Renji awoke hours later, two of his eyes cut out and his village still burning. He stumbled through the burning village while crying blood and screaming for someone to help him. He wandered away from the village and collapsed on the beach. Renji screamed and wished for death as the tide slowly approached him.
"You survived that, eh lad?" A man suddenly spoke.
Renji turned to his left and stared up at the man with his third eye, tears streaming down his face. The man in front of him had pale white skin, long black hair and a purple robe. The man's sinister purple eyes stared down at Renji as he struggled to find words.
"Who are you?" Renji simply asked.
"I'm a sage that's been living in a nearby cave. I've been studying your clan for some time now." The man said and nodded his head slowly.
"A sage?"
The man smiled and said, "My name is Orochimaru, the Snake Sage."
"Orochimaru?"
"Listen, boy, you need to snap out of the shock. You can't bring your clan back to life, so what are you going to do?" Orochimaru asked and lifted an eyebrow.
"I-I don't know." Renji sobbed.
"What a pathetic specimen. Your clan was just massacred by the Akatsuki. They're a powerful band of pirates. A crybaby like you could never avenge your family." Orochimaru frowned.
"Shut up! My family is dead!" Renji snapped at Orochimaru.
The Snake Sage laughed and patted Renji on the head. "Come with me, boy. I'll lead you down the path of vengeance."
Renji took Orochimaru's hand and walked down the beach with him. They walked for nearly an hour until arriving at a large cave opening. They walked inside, lanterns and candles illuminated the inside of the cave as they walked deeper inside.
They came to Orochimaru's living area and Renji sat down on a cushion. Orochimaru dug through a chest and pulled out a long silver fruit with link-like swirl patterns on it.
"What is that?" Renji asked.
"This is a Devil Fruit. Eating one grants the user a specific ability in exchange for their ability to swim." Orochimaru explained.
"Huh? That's crazy…" Renji said and shook his head.
"It's true. Some of the Akatsuki utilized these fruits to kill your clan."
"So if I eat this fruit, I'll get powers?" Renji asked and stared at the silver fruit.
Orochimaru nodded and said, "This is the Chain-Chain Fruit, a Paramecia type Devil Fruit. Eating it will allow you to control and manipulate chains."
"Paramecia?" Renji asked, confused.
"We'll get to that later." Orochimaru smiled and said, "I've been keeping this Devil Fruit for a student, one that can accomplish great things."
"Why this one in particular?"
Orochimaru smiled.
Renji picked himself up off the ground and wiped blood from his mouth. Six chains emerged from both of his arms and moved around in the air, moving like slithering snakes. Renji Shaved at Raizen and his chains struck precisely at him, biting into Raizen's chest with jagged teeth.
Raizen swung a wide right hook that Renji ducked beneath and his left arm chains wrapped around Raizen's arm. Raizen swung his left arm at Renji and his blow was once again deflected with a strange force. Raizen was blasted away and Renji yanked him back with the attached chains. Raizen flew straight into Renji, he slammed the ultimate Six Powers technique into Raizen's chest, "Six King Pistol!"
An internal blow blasted Raizen back hard as he coughed blood and stumbled around sloppily. Renji panted hard as a wave of fatigue washed over him. The Six King Gun was a reckless attack that always drained Renji when he used it, the fight needed to end soon…
Raizen wiped blood from his mouth and grabbed his chest. He coughed and said, "Holy shit, kid, that was a good one."
Renji breathed heavily and clenched his fists. "You're a tough bastard but I'm gonna defeat you!" Renji declared.
They Shaved at each other and exchanged a mad flurry of blows as they leapt around quickly. Renji hurled serrated diamond chains that wrapped around Raizen's torso and shredded through his thick muscular armor. Raizen grabbed the chains and yanked Renji forward as the chains ripped into his hands.
Renji flew at Raizen and he slammed a heavy punch into Renji's forehead. Renji hit the ground hard and rolled away from Raizen as he stomped down at him. Chains erupted from the ground and wrapped around Raizen's leg.
Renji Shaved at Raizen as he struggled against the chains and slammed a powerful punch into Raizen's chest. Chains sprouted from Renji's arm and dug into Raizen's chest as he staggered back. Renji yanked on the chains and pulled Raizen into a barrage of Finger Pistols that stabbed into Raizen's chest and stomach.
Raizen ripped himself free from the chains and kicked Renji in his left side. Renji wrapped his right arm in chains and slammed a punch square in Raizen's face and broke his nose with a sickening crunch. They exchanged a sloppy flurry of blows and struck each other back as they clashed.
Renji shot a hail of blade-tipped chains that stabbed at Raizen as he leapt around and swatted at the chains. One of the chains twisted up and pierced Raizen's left eye, he roared and smacked the chains away.
Raizen laughed as blood dripped from his ruined eye. "Look at us! Two good eyes between us, ha ha ha!"
Raizen Shaved at Renji and slammed a fierce uppercut into Renji's chin that lifted him off the ground. Raizen grabbed Renji's ankle and slammed him into the ground. Chains erupted from Renji's leg and wrapped around Raizen's arm and stabbed into him.
Renji flipped up to his feet and yanked Raizen forward. They exchanged blows and Renji tightened the chains around Raizen's arm and split through muscle and fractured bones. Renji clenched his left fist tightly and a wicked black sheen covered his fist as it hardened. He slammed his fist into Raizen's chin and teeth shattered out of his mouth as he stumbled back.
Renji waved his arms and thick chains erupted from his body and wrapped around Raizen's body, trapping his arms against his chest. More chains burst from the ground and wrapped around Raizen's legs, rooting him in place.
"You've been captured." Renji said coolly.
Raizen struggled to break free from the chains as more and more wrapped around him, bladed tips piercing into his body and digging deep. He screamed and fought hard to break the chains around him.
"It's no use." Renji spat and said, "Too many battles one after the next has drained you. You're all mine."
"Go fuck yourself, you bastard!" Raizen shouted.
"Before you die, I have some questions." Renji said slowly.
Raizen stood still for a moment and said, "I have some demands."
"Oh? And why would I listen to you?"
"Only eight of the current Akatsuki members, myself included, were involved with the slaughter of your clan. I may not like one of them that much, but they weren't involved. The other one, she's the little sister of the Akatsuki." Raizen said slowly.
"He's like the big brother, overprotective of the ones he cares about." Hisoka's words rang through Renji's mind.
"That's all I have to say, I won't answer any questions or sell out my comrades." Raizen said coolly.
"Are those your final words?" Renji asked.
"I'll see you in hell, bastard." Raizen said and smiled widely as Renji forced the bladed chains further into his body and pierced both of Raizen's lungs and his heart…
Raizen coughed up a horrendous amount of blood and fell to the ground, dead before he hit the ground. Renji sighed and stumbled slowly toward the fresh corpse of the phantom, a strange sense of emptiness and sadness flooded through his mind as he stepped forward.
Renji bent down and removed the ring from Raizen's left middle finger. He tucked the ring into his pocket and placed his blindfold back on his head. He stumbled around slowly and hit the ground, exhausted and badly beaten.
He heard the crunching of approaching footsteps and tried to lift himself off the ground to no avail. He sensed out at the approaching people and smiled slightly, "You stuck around?" He asked weakly.
"We saw you and the big guy stay behind, of course we were gonna watch your fight." Mugen said and chuckled.
"Yeah, it was a hell of a show." Shuhei added.
"My Power Pole and my satchel, please grab them." Renji said and coughed roughly.
"No problem, let's get you back to the Bayloke."
Renji heard their footsteps grow fainter as he lost consciousness and slipped away into a pleasantly dreamless sleep.
"He was captured?" Jinpachi gaped.
"By who?" Volcier asked.
"A person who manipulated chains and his entourage." Machi answered.
"Machi, come look through these wanted posters. Let's see if we can identify these guys." Franklin said as he grabbed a stack of posters.
"I'm sure he'll be fine, the big man can take care of himself." Gabriel said slowly.
"Question the Shadow Beast when he wakes up, we'll sit tight for now. Raizen has until sunrise to return or we'll act without him." Volcier said.
