Chapter 50: Old World Blues
"We should go check things out. Those explosions were close." Shuhei said as he peered through a window.
"I agree." Zika said and nodded.
"They said they'd come back here when they shook off the soldiers." Connie said quickly.
"They've obviously run into trouble." Renji said.
"Could they have run into that God guy?" Yasui questioned.
Buelle shook his head and said, "God Gin wouldn't bother coming down here himself. At least God Farin would interact with us across Angel Island." He sighed.
"Did Gin kill Farin?" Shuhei asked.
"We aren't allowed to talk about him in public." Connie said quietly.
"God Gin believes him to be dead but we think otherwise." Buelle said and grinned.
"He's alive, then?"
"I believe he and the last of his followers are alive somewhere below in the White Sea." Buelle explained.
"Let's give them some time and then we'll move out on our own." Renji said slowly.
"Sounds good."
God Farin, Asuka and Mugen flew through the sky on Barnum, the mock Pegasus. Farin guided the steed up through the upper levels of the White Sea and shifted through the White White Sea. Barnum flew and landed in the northwest of Upper Yard.
The three of them dismounted the Pegasus and looked around at the surrounding jungle. Asuka grinned and exclaimed, "This place is awesome!"
"This is Upper Yard." God Farin stated.
Ten figures emerged from hiding places and aimed bows and spears at the group of them.
"Hm?" Mugen reached over his shoulder and grabbed the hilt of his sword.
"God Farin, who are these people?" One of the figures, a man with dark blue hair asked.
"These two are from the Blue Sea. I think they can help us reclaim our home from Gin." God Farin said and smiled.
"Who are these guys?" Asuka asked.
"The last of my royal guard. They've remained loyal all this time." God Farin said with a nod.
"We've been held up in a small part of Upper Yard for the last month or so." The blue haired man said firmly.
"Gin has taken a chunk of southeast Upper Yard and is slowly invading." A woman said slowly.
"Asuka, I left my snail on the ship. You should call Bulma." Mugen suggested.
Asuka scratched the back of his head and chuckled, "I left mine on the ship too. Ha ha."
"I'm sure we'll run into them." Mugen said and shrugged.
God Farin's loyal troop approached the three of them and smiled lightly. They all had the upturned small wings and ragged looking clothes.
"I'm Puck." The blue haired man said.
"Leslie." A woman with dark green hair said and nodded.
"Asuka."
"Mugen."
Puck looked to God Farin and asked, "What's the plan, then?"
"Gin's forces and the Shandians will stand against us, both see us as the enemy." God Farin sighed and said, "We'll have to fight our way to Gin and take him out before he can conquer Upper Yard."
"The Shandians? They lived in Upper Yard before it arrived here, yeah?" Mugen questioned.
God Farin nodded and said, "Upper Yard is a piece of an island that was carried up by the Knock Up Stream."
"Holy shit, that's how we got here!" Asuka laughed.
"I'm happy that we were hit by a smaller stream. An island sized one would have destroyed the Whore." Mugen muttered and smiled.
"Indeed, you are lucky. The Knock Up Stream is a fifty-fifty shot at success." God Farin said and nodded.
"Shit." Asuka chuckled.
"And why don't the Shandians like you? I can understand rebelling against that Gin bastard but, why you?" Mugen questioned.
"Ever since Upper Yard arrived next to Angel Island, God has wanted to claim the land as his own. Every now and then, God will come to peace with the Shandians only for the next one to screw it all up." God Farin explained sadly.
"I see. So, we march south to Gin's chunk of Upper Yard?" Mugen asked with a smile.
"Seems like the plan." Puck said.
"Is everyone ready?" God Farin asked his followers.
"Yeah."
"Let's go."
Asuka grinned and said, "Let's go kick God's ass."
"Alright, I'm gonna go look for the others." Shuhei said and stood up.
"Are you sure?" Connie asked nervously.
"It's been one hour." Zika said and Hama barked quietly.
"Should we all go?" Yasui asked.
"You're easily spotted as Blue Sea dwellers." Buelle said and coughed. "If the others got into trouble then trouble may find you.
Bulma was working on her Climate Baton and deconstructing one of Buelle's Dials. She looked at the others and said, "Knowing them, they'll end up in Upper Yard."
"You think so?" Connie gaped.
"Asuka was ready to march to God Gin and fight him the moment you explained the situation to us." Shuhei said and smiled.
"Then, what do we do?" Yasui asked.
"How about Shuhei and I head to Upper Yard now. And then you guys can follow after us, just in case someone comes back here." Zika suggested.
"Honestly, I'd like to work on these a little longer." Bulma said as she continued tinkering with her baton and Dials.
"We can ride the Flying Nimbus later, anyway." Yasui said and smiled.
"Yeah, true." Shuhei thought for a second and said, "Let's go Zika, Hama."
"Right." Zika said Hama barked.
"Wait. If you head through the industrial part of town and cross Angel Bridge then, you'll be faced with Gin's soldiers." Buelle said quickly.
"We can beat through them and ask if they've seen the others." Zika said and chuckled.
Shuhei nodded and said, "Sounds good to me."
"You can take the Waver." Connie said suddenly. "You can drive to Upper Yard with it."
"Waver?" Zika and Shuhei asked.
Buelle nodded and said, "I'll show you."
Calgara and the Shandians took Renji up through southwest Upper Yard as they sped through the jungle, weaving between the trees on their hoverboards.
"We've been traveling for some time." Renji said.
Calgara nodded and said, "We're almost there."
"You said you were taking me to the 'true God', what did you mean?" Renji asked.
"My ancestors helped preserve the knowledge of ancient times. They met the Creator and built cities on this island." Calgara explained.
"The Creator?"
"Yes, the one who created the Dragon Balls." Calgara said and nodded.
"What?!" Renji exclaimed.
"You've heard of the legendary Dragon Balls? Well, I suppose they'd land in the Blue Sea more often than up here." Calgara said as they zoomed across the treeline and a large town came into view.
"My friends gathered them several months ago." Renji explained and smiled.
"Ah, yes. The sky went black nearly half a year ago when the Eternal Dragon answered the call. Those were your friends?" Calgara asked, amazed.
Renji nodded, "That's what they told me and I have no reason not to believe them." He laughed.
"We're here, the Namekian village." Calgara said as they sped into the town.
"Namekian? Are they another kind of sky people?" Renji asked.
Calgara shook his head, "Further beyond the sky."
"They do feel different." Renji said as he sensed around.
The Namekians were humanoid figures with green skin, pointy ears and antennae. They had patches of yellowish pink on their arms, legs and abdomen. They watched as the Shandians flew through the streets, heading for a large bronze tower in the middle of town.
Renji and Calgara hopped off the hoverboard and walked up a set of wide stairs as they ascended the tower. Calgara led him up the stairs and across a large room to an elevator. Renji sensed around the tower as he entered the elevator and Calgara pulled a lever.
The elevator rumbled and began to rise up through the tower as it swayed and shifted in the frame. Renji steadied himself and shook his head as the elevator continued upward. After some time, the elevator stopped and Calgara opened the doors.
Calgara and Renji stepped out into a large room at the top of the tower and slowly approached two Namekians by the window. One of them was three feet tall and wore a thick beige robe. The other had dark green wrinkled skin and the patches around his body were orange; he wore a blue and white robe and held a staff in his left hand.
"Kami, I ran into a dweller of the Blue Sea." Calgara explained happily.
The two Namekians turned to look at them, the older one smiled. "Hello, there."
"Hello." Renji said slowly, "I'm Renji."
"Is he one of them?" The short Namekian asked.
"My name is Kami." The older Namekian nodded and said, "Creator of the Earth Dragon Balls."
"And I'm Dende." The short one said firmly.
"It's good to meet you." Renji said awkwardly.
"He was in combat with the soldiers in the city. He was outnumbered so I brought him back here with us." Calgara explained.
Kami nodded and said, "A great battle is coming, Renji. God Gin and his forces from Birka are invading Upper Yard. They've killed countless Shandians and Namekians without conscience. An all out attack is coming within the next day or two."
"I've heard about Gin and have encountered his cronies." Renji stated.
"He's a strong fighter." Calgara said and smiled.
"A couple of your friends are here in Upper Yard as we speak. They're planning on making a move against Gin." Kami explained slowly.
"What? Where are they?" Renji asked quickly.
"Across Upper Yard, to the east. They're with God Farin." Kami said.
"Hm, that bastard is here?" Calgara asked angrily.
"Calgara, we need to be forgiving to some people." Kami said and sighed. "God Farin is our best shot at coming to peace with the Angel Islanders. In a weird way, we have Gin to thank for potential peace."
"How do you know where they are and what they're doing?" Renji asked.
"My Color of Observation is keener than yours, Renji. I can sense the same way that you can, only I can feel the entire planet." Kami said and smiled softly.
"What?! The entire planet?!" Renji gaped.
"Namekians are truly amazing." Calgara said and nodded.
"I am an ancient being. I've been here on Earth for nearly a thousand years. I've been across the planet numerous times and have enough stories to overfill libraries." Kami said slowly.
"I've heard stories about the Dragon Balls. That Shenron can't exceed his creator's power when granting wishes. I imagine you'd have to be crazy powerful." Renji said and smiled.
Kami smiled, "The great battle is approaching fast. Will you help us defeat Gin and bring peace to Skypiea?"
"My Captain is already on his way to fight Gin, of course I'll help you." Renji said and nodded.
Dende smiled and asked, "Are you able to contact your friends?"
Renji dug through his pockets and pulled out his Baby Transponder Snail, "I think we're close enough to reach them."
"We'll need all the help we can get when the battle starts." Calgara stated.
"Give me a little bit and I'll make some calls."
"Very well." Dende said.
Shuhei drove the Waver as Zika and Hama sat in the back. They sped across Angel Island, people leaping away from the Waver as it approached.
"You're not bad at steering this thing." Zika said.
"Yeah, I've driven something similar." Shuhei said and smiled.
"Buelle said that God Gin controls the chunk of Upper Yard that the bridge will take us to. Be prepared to fight." Zika said and Hama barked.
"We've got this." Shuhei laughed as he steered the Waver through the industrial part of the city.
They saw groups of White Berets as they sped through the streets and reached Angel Bridge. A platoon of soldiers shouted at them to stop as Shuhei zoomed across the bridge. They sped off the bridge and passed recently built structures and an army of soldiers.
"Stop that Waver!"
"Stop them!"
Shuhei floored it down the milky white road that the White Berets had created and sped through the camp. White Berets propelled down the milky road after them and a bolt of lightning suddenly struck the Waver!
Smoke erupted from the Waver and Shuhei, Zika and Hama leapt out of it as another bolt of lightning struck the Waver and it exploded wildly. A large golden bird swooped down at Shuhei, Zika and Hama as they sprawled into the surrounding jungle.
A small man with long black hair sat atop the large bird. He aimed a gold scepter at the three of them and a bolt of lightning shot at them, igniting the surrounding trees as it missed them.
Zika and Hama leapt up and struck down approaching soldiers with their Fang Over Fang as Shuhei dodged another lightning bolt. While the Zoldyk family tortured themselves with electricity to gain resistances to its effects, it was always smarter to avoid being struck by it. It still hurts and could cause momentary muscle lock which could leave you wide open.
Shuhei dodged another lightning bolt and struck down a soldier with a swift kick. Zika and Hama beat through more soldiers and the three of them dashed further into the jungle. The large bird flapped its wings and sped after them as they ran off.
"Get back here!" The man on the bird shouted as he shot a few more bolts of lightning down at them.
"Who the hell is this guy?" Zika asked as they ran.
"Some guy who's gonna get his ass kicked!" Shuhei called out.
