Chapter 60: The Descent
About three months have passed since God Gin's defeat in Skypiea. In that time the Misfits have studied and trained themselves diligently before continuing their adventure. Shuhei celebrated his fifteenth birthday and Mugen celebrated his eighteenth birthday in the passing months.
It is now December twenty-third, the Misfits prepare for their departure from the Sky Island. The seven of them walked through the Namekian town and entered the bronze tower.
"What did Kami want with us this early?" Asuka yawned.
"He didn't say." Bulma answered.
"Maybe he just wants to say goodbye." Renji suggested.
They entered the elevator and ascended the bronze tower. After a few moments, the elevator stopped and the doors slowly opened. The Misfits stepped out into the large room at the top of the tower to see Kami, Dende, Calgara and God Farin sitting on large cushions.
"Oh, you guys are here!" Dende smiled.
"Good morning." Calgara and God Farin said in unison.
"What's the occasion?" Zika asked.
"We're just discussing the future of Skypiea." God Farin as he looked around. "Where's Hama?"
"He's still sleeping." Zika chuckled.
"We have you to thank for helping us save our lands." Kami said and smiled, "We wanted to thank you one last time before you left."
Asuka smiled, "You helped us as well. So there's no need for thanks."
"When are you leaving?" Dende asked.
"Pretty soon." Mugen said with a nod.
"Buelle and Connie are gonna help us return to the Blue Sea." Bulma stated.
"Oh, I see. I hope to see you all again." God Farin said with a nod.
"Indeed. Good luck on your journey." Calgara said with a smile.
Kami stood up and bowed his head at Farin and Calgara, "Please, excuse me." He walked toward the Misfits and waved for Dende to follow. "Come with me."
Kami and Dende led the group of them back to the elevator and they all descended the tower. Instead of the ground floor, kami led them into a basement level of the structure.
"Whoa. I feel kinda sick down here." Renji muttered as the doors opened.
"What is this place?" Shuhei asked.
The group of them stepped out into the dark basement as Dende ran around lighting torches hanging on the walls. "This is our vault."
Dim light filled the room around them and Kami used a Lamp Dial to illuminate a large dark blue cube with strange writing on its face.
"A Poneglyph?!" Shuhei and Bulma exclaimed.
"Oh, wow. For real?" Asuka asked and smiled.
"This was left here with me for safe keeping." Kami smiled and said, "The only other person I've revealed this to was Avery…"
Renji grabbed his head and stumbled back, "What the hell is going on?"
"Are you alright?" Zika asked and helped steadied Renji.
"I-I don't know." Renji gripped both sides of his head and breathed heavily, "I feel so sad and so weak. As if my heart has been severed by a painful goodbye."
"That's what the Poneglyph says..!" Bulma pointed at the Poneglyph and did her best to read the tablet, "This is an apology letter from someone named Sun Wukong. He bids his final farewell and talks about a weapon called 'Poseidon'."
"Holy shit, you really can read that now." Shuhei chuckled.
"Renji… You can feel the emotions written into this Poneglyph." Kami stared at him for a few moments, "The same as Avery…"
"What does that mean?" Yasui asked.
"Instead of reading them, Renji is able to share the feelings of whomever wrote the messages into the Poneglyphs. It is an extremely rare form of Observation Haki…" Kami thought for a few moments.
"Is it my third eye?!" Renji gaped and breathed steadier.
"It could be that…"
"I've finished copying the Poneglyph into my notebook." Bulma said and tucked her notebook into her bag.
"That was fast." Mugen muttered.
"Let's get out of this vault." Renji said and moved back toward the elevator.
"What is it, Kami?" Dende whispered.
Kami shook his head and muttered, "It's still unclear."
The group of them stepped back into the elevator and ascended up to the ground floor.
A few hours later, the Misfits walked through the streets of Angel Island with Connie and Buelle. Hama barked and wagged his tail as surrounding Skypieans clapped and cheered around them.
"Thanks for showing us how to get home, Connie." Asuka smiled.
"It's no problem! I'm a little sad that you're leaving…" Connie responded.
"Thank all you kids!" Buelle grinned, "You saved the island."
"We just seem to run into trouble, that's all." Shuhei said and nodded.
"I like to think that trouble finds us." Mugen added.
"I think so too." Renji smiled softly.
The group of them walked through the city and down to Angel Beach. Buelle and Connie hopped onto a Waver and watched as Bulma grabbed the large DynoCap and released the Whore onto the White White Sea.
"It's good to see the Whore again!" Yasui exclaimed as they all climbed onboard of their vessel.
The Misfits got the ship prepared and followed after Bulle and Connie as they sped forward on their Waver.
"Hey, Connie! How does this all work again?" Zika called out.
"We'll take you to Cloud End and you can ride the White Road off the island!" Connie called back.
They sailed across the White White Sea for nearly thirty minutes before coming to a large white marble building with a sign that read Cloud End. Buelle stopped the Waver and Connie shouted, "I'll never forget you guys! Be careful of the drop!"
The Whore's Pocket Watch descended down a milky white ramp and the Misfits looked around at each other, "Drop?"
The ship flew off of the white ramp and began to plummet through the air! The Misfits screamed and grabbed hold of each other as the Whore fell dramatically fast. A large dark shadow moved through the clouds of White Sea and grabbed hold of the ship as it descended down through the sky.
The Misfits watched as the Balloon Octopus that grabbed hold of the Whore inflated its massive head and greatly slowed the descent of the ship.
"Holy shit!" Yasui and Zika exclaimed.
"I thought we were goners for a second…" Shuhei muttered.
"This thing is awesome!" Asuka laughed and looked up at the octopus, "Thanks for the assist!"
Mugen grinned, "Well, looks like we're gonna make it."
"Yeah." Renji said.
"Captain, we have the course for the next island set in the Log Pose." Bulma said and looked around at the others as she smiled.
Asuka grinned, "We're heading back to the Blue Sea!"
"Thinking of the past?" Grand Elder Guru asked from his enormous chair.
Kami nodded his head, "How could I not?"
"The time is coming, Kami. The ones whom you waited for and that I saw in my visions have come and gone…"
"Yes, I know." Kami looked up at Guru, "The times are changing. The Dawn is finally approaching."
Guru nodded his head slowly and said, "Though the night will hold this world for a little longer."
"It's a big world. There are many pieces in this game. I can sense them on the move. My range is fading but I can still feel the Grand Line." Kami smiled, "And I'll have to suffer the consequences of my actions."
Guru nodded again, "I have seen him. I know not when he'll return but return he shall…"
"I have hope for the coming times. That these kids will be able to fight off the darkness and reshape the world."
"We need a musician." Asuka groaned, "We've been floating for hours and we still have a ways to go."
"A musician?" Mugen raised an eyebrow.
"Of course! Pirates sing." Asuka said matter-of-factly.
Shuhei laughed, "We're strange pirates."
"All done!" Yasui stood up and lifted the completed Misfit Jolly Roger. It was a simple design but fit the crew nicely. It depicted a skull that was split into three portions; the top of the skull, the eyes and nose of the skull and the lower jaw section with two bones in the background.
Asuka grinned, "I love it!"
"Wow, Yasui, it looks really nice!" Bulma smiled.
Zika looked over the railing of the Whore and stared down at the expansive sea far far below them. "Yeah, a musician would be nice." Hama barked.
They attached and raised their new Jolly Roger and Yasui smiled up at it. He looked at the others and said, "We need a cook."
"Definitely." Bulma nodded.
"Do we really need a cook?" Renji asked.
"Yeah, I mean, we all take turns cooking anyway." Shuhei added.
"Yeah…" Yasui muttered.
"...Some of us aren't too good at it though." Zika finished and laughed.
"Hm, who?" Mugen and Shuhei asked.
"Well, I mean. Asuka and Mugen just roast meat." Zika laughed.
"What's wrong with that?" Mugen asked.
"Yeah, meat is great." Asuka nodded.
"It's nice to have sides and seasoning and anything that would turn it into a meal." Yasui said and rubbed the back of his head.
"Bulma, Yasui and myself are alright at cooking but we aren't master chefs or anything like that." Zika offered.
"What about me?" Shuhei asked.
"You're awful." Yasui said quickly.
Asuka laughed.
"What?!" Shuhei exclaimed.
"You really are bad at cooking." Bulma said and smiled nervously.
"What about Renji?" Mugen asked.
"Hm." Yasui thought for a few moments.
"He's actually never cooked before." Zika stated.
"Yeah, why is that?" Bulma asked.
Renji shrugged, "I'm blind."
"Bullshit!" The others exclaimed.
Renji chuckled, "I'm mostly blind."
"Anyways… We need a cook." Yasui said and smiled.
"Yeah, yeah. First a musician and then a cook." Asuka nodded.
"I think a musician is less important than a cook." Bulma muttered.
"Then we'll never have anyone to play music for our parties or journeys! That sounds boring and I'd rather die than be bored!" Asuka exclaimed.
"What?!"
"Alright, we'll find a cook and a musician." Yasui chuckled.
"What about a Doctor? Isn't that important?" Bulma questioned.
Renji chuckled, "Yeah that's a good point."
"And a shipwright." Shuhei said.
"Whoa whoa whoa! I'm not too bad as a shipwright." Yasui waved his arms around.
"Oh yeah, Yasui has been patching up the Whore." Asuka stated.
"Yeah but, that doesn't exactly make him a shipwright." Zika said.
"C'mon, I'm getting there!" Yasui exclaimed.
They all laughed and Mugen said, "Well, now's as good a time as any to drink."
"Hey! How about a drinking game?" Zika offered.
"Hm?"
"I'm in."
"Me too."
"What are the rules?" Shuhei asked.
"Uh, well. Let's call it Truth or Drink. Or, more like Share or Drink." Zika explained.
"Alright."
They all sat in a circle on the deck of the Whore as the Balloon Octopus kept them hidden in the shade as the sun shone brightly at them. Many containers of alcohol and cups were set up between them all as they looked around at each other.
"Uh, guess I'll go first." Zika said.
"Do we ask you something?" Bulma asked.
Zika nodded.
"Do you know why you were left on Shrubbin?" Mugen asked.
"Hm. There was a war brewing in my homeland and my dad wanted me away from it." Zika said and nodded.
"Then moving to the left, I'm next." Yasui said and smiled.
"Do you plan on returning to your island?" Bulma asked.
"Of course!" Yasui nodded, "I don't know when but I'll go back there for sure. I'm gonna have so many stories to tell them and I just want to see my mom again."
"Asuka, what are you gonna do when you find your dad?" Shuhei asked.
Asuka thought for a second and said, "I'm really not sure. I'm not in a hurry to find him, you know? I'd rather have fun with you guys than look for him."
"But you're gonna run into him eventually, yeah?" Mugen raised an eyebrow.
Asuka nodded, "Most definitely. I'm sure that I'll have a bunch of questions that he may or may not answer."
"Hm."
"Shuhei, what's up with your family?" Yasui asked.
"Hm? Well, I was raised in a family of assassins. My parents want me to give my all into the business but I wanted to live my own life. I seek adventure and some of them want me to come back home…"
"And they're after you?" Bulma asked.
"My sister, Tatsuki, is trying to capture me and bring me back home. My grandpa and dad are indifferent about what I do but my mom is fuckin crazy. It's whatever." Shuhei nodded.
"Bulma, your dad is a Government Scientist, right?" Shuhei asked.
Bulma nodded.
"What does he do? What does he work on?"
"My father primarily works on gadgets and vehicles for the Navy and World Government. He works with a man named Dr. Urahara on a special project creating cyborgs and military robots." Bulma explained.
"Robots?!" Asuka and Yasui exclaimed.
"Military cyborgs aren't a good thing guys." Renji sighed, "That's unfortunate."
"Renji, what's your plan for taking down the Akatsuki?" Bulma asked.
"Pass." Renji took a hefty drink from his cup of wine.
"Alright… Mugen, what were you doing with those bandits?" Bulma asked.
"Hm?"
"In Qarlaq Kingdom. It's bugged me for a long time now. How did you know both Princess Rukia and the bandits?" Bulma questioned.
"I was rescued by the royal family and they took me in for a while. The dickhead King kicked me out of the castle and I decided to wander about the forest. I met Twinblade and joined his gang for the hell of it."
"Eh, just for fun?" Yasui asked.
"And to keep an eye on them. Just to make sure they didn't get too close to the city." Mugen nodded.
"Aw, you big softy." Bulma chuckled.
Mugen grabbed the hilt of his sword and Bulma covered her mouth as the others laughed.
The group of them continued playing the drinking game for a few more hours, though more conversation was had than drinking. Eventually, the Whore landed on the Blue Sea and the octopus deflated rapidly as it flew away quickly and landed in the water.
"Thank you, octopus!" Asuka shouted out as he waved.
"Go give those other octopi hell!" Zika called out.
"Where to now?" Shuhei asked.
"The Pose is pointing north." Bulma said and pointed in the direction of the next island.
Asuka chuckled, "Let's go!"
