Chapter Five
The next day…
9:30 AM...
CalSci…
Don got out of the car with Megan as they followed Charlie and Larry to their meeting with the Dean before their afternoon classes and he was feeling uneasy, something wasn't right, but he couldn't pinpoint what it was and he can't do anything for the moment, except make sure his brother and Larry make it through the day okay, which he was determined to do. While he didn't do any protection detail since his promotion, he convinced Merrick to let him follow his brother around for the day to put his mind at ease that nothing would happen today and Colby had to go through some paperwork from another case to go through, since it would soon be going to trial and they needed some things in order and they were short-handed at the moment.
'Still better than nothing.' Don thought ruefully.
Megan was feeling almost the same as Don was, as Don wanted to be with his brother and Larry at the meeting before going back to the FBI offices to meet with Merrick about the possible threats and if it is related to any cases they have on file. She was particularly worried about Larry, as he couldn't sleep the night before due to a combination of fear and guilt, fear for his and everyone's safety and guilt for not realizing that his former friend would go back to gambling and then try to get himself out of trouble.
After Charlie and Larry went into the Dean's office, Megan felt a strange uneasiness, as if they were being watched but as she looked around, she didn't see anything or anyone, making her wonder if she was being paranoid and Don noticed her uneasiness.
"Are you okay, Megan?" Don asked, concerned about his friend
"I'm okay, I just have this feeling that we are being watched." Megan said honestly, not sure what else to say at the moment.
"We just need to keep vigilant." Don said, as he started to feel uneasy too, as he wasn't sure if someone was going to try something or not but he knew that they needed to focus and make sure things turned out okay.
Meanwhile...
Dean's office…
Charlie was feeling uneasy, as was Larry, but he was also irritated by Dean Marther's attitude, as he seemed to not realize how serious the situation was, as he has been so far dismissive of the professor's concerns and more worried about the inconvenience that rescheduling classes would cause.
"Professor Eppes, I hope you and your colleague realize the problems of getting new teachers to cover for you two will cause chaos for everyone else." Marther sneered, clearly unimpressed with what the two teachers had told him and they were finding it infuriating, to say the least.
"Marther, I am sorry, I really am, the problems this will cause but you have to understand, there are dangerous people after us and us being here for too long would endanger the students, do you want that?" Charlie finally said angrily, as the Dean had been ranting for several minutes and he didn't want to waste anymore time.
The man stared at them for a few moments, clearly unhappy but thinking about what Charlie had said before he spoke again.
"Fine, I will see what I can do but you two owe me when this nightmare is over." The man snorted, indicating that the meeting was just about over.
"Thank you." An exasperated Charlie said, with Larry nodding in agreement, as he was distracted, as he thought he saw someone following them but he thought he was being paranoid.
He was about to find out how wrong he was.
Outside CalSci…
The two men were in the car, getting their guns ready, preparing for a possible fight with the agents, as they were running out of time and their bosses needed the older man to be with them, alive and there were to be no living witnesses.
"Ready, Jacks?" The first man asked
"As ready as I can be, Rick." Jacks confirmed, "Let's make this as quick as possible."
