Ideals/Goals:
A progressive secret society that have existed for thousands of years spanning human history, the Order of Assassins has been founded upon a distinct set of ideals in rationalism and epistemology, with the unique viewpoint that before one devises a specific code of ethics or belief system, one must first approach the world from varying standpoints, un-tempered by biases or subjective morality or faith. To the Assassins, all knowledge should be obtained through non-subjective and con-contradictory viewpoints for an individual to establish sound based decisions.
From this skepticism arises the Assassins' maxim that "nothing is true, everything is permitted," a relativistic assertion stating there is no such concept of absolutes, or a singular universal rule that defines all human society. Thus, the second component of the creed, "everything is permitted" extends upon the principle of uncertainty, as everything in this world remains ever constantly changing under different circumstances. Moderation is therefore an inherent principle of the Assassins, who shun extremism as destructive to society. To treat one belief as absolute is to not only submit oneself to the irrationality of blind faith, but also to cloud oneself from the perspectives of inevitable dissenters.
The Assassins throughout history have fought under the banner of freewill and liberty for the oppressed. In spite this, freedom was not their only goal, but promoting self-responsibility. The Assassins aspire for all human beings to accept truth and responsibility within themselves, accepting the consequences of their decisions whether be glorious or tragic. The genesis of what essentially amounts to the betterment of one-self and progression of human civilization. It is important to note they do not seek to establish a universal utopia, but instead preserve a foundation where all human beings can, at the very least, be willing to better themselves under a slow arduous journey and move forward.
However, their ideals on rationalism, self-betterment, and progression have earned extreme disapproval from many Youkai as many saw humanity as cattle to be exploited or eaten. While there are Youkai who wished to co-exist, only at the expense humans have no incentive to take responsibility into their own hands, and live out their lives in complacency and disregard any possible advancements.
Relations:
The Templar Order: Sworn enemies to the Brotherhood, the Templars seek to create a perfect world that directly contradicts the Assassins. Whereas the Assassins sought for humanity to achieve a gradual progress of learning tolerance and responsibility. The Templars insinuate mankind is in-capable of such a thing and irremediable beyond all measure. Key to their dream is the imposition of a New World Order, and they envision that responsibility must be forced on all human beings, even without their consent. Because of this conflict in ideology, the Templars became involved in a covert war against the Assassins, spanning millennia and continuing into the modern era.
Sages of Gensokyo: Antagonistic to the Assassins and Templars, the Youkai sages never saw eye-to-eye on both factions as they are a constant threat to the balance of Gensokyo. Like many Youkai who seek "co-existence," they sought to have all mankind be complacent and run away from notions of responsibility. For them, ignorance is a blissful thing to uphold as it helps maintain the status-quo of their land. Rumors has gone about that their most enigmatic sage, Yukari Yakumo, was responsible for hindering the Shikaku's foothold on Japan during the Bakumatsu period, and possibly even insinuated a major purge two-hundred years ago during the early Edo period.
Hakurei Clan: A family of Japanese shinto-preists, shrine maidens, and Youkai exterminators. Several branches of the family served as advisors to the Imperial Court during the Edo period. The Shikaku were viewed under disfavor as they were seen as outsiders from far-away lands and should be removed from Nippon under the isolationist policy of Sonno-Joi.
Hakurei Chimnoku: Family-borne member of the Hakurei Clan, and Assassin of the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins, active in Japan during the Bakumatsu and Meiji era. Sympathetic to the Assassin cause, Chimnoku broke all familial ties to his clan to join their ranks. With knowledge of the land and all it's provinces, Chimnoku helped to establish the Brotherhood's influence as the Shikaku's Guild. Although affiliation to his own clan has been severed, his sister, Hakurei Azumi still maintains a close relation as brother and sister.
