Myiand'r of Earth
Summary: Mandy's lived around superheroes her whole life. Which isn't easy when you don't have powers, your house is regularly attacked by supervillains, and Damian Wayne's your best friend. Now a villain's claiming he's her father...?
Mandy is OOC.
Chapter 1
Notes: I normally write in second tense, but I wanted to write it as if it was a comic/visual novel. So... Imagine underlined sentences in textbox/speech bubbles.
I'm Mandy, a half human, half Tamaranean.
A chubby twelve girl, who looks like she raids the back of Raven's closet civilian clothes that's been left at the Tower since her Titan days. Looks, because there's no way she'd fit into those stick figure even though they were baggy on Raven. They were good inspiration.
She wasn't ugly. Not really. But the weight wasn't insignificant, and even thin she wouldn't be a supermodel.
Barely even look like Starfire.
A girl who couldn't even live her life.
"Tt. Must you settle for something so common?" Damian asked, eyeing the coloring dish with a disdainful tut.
"I'm goth." Mandy repeated, exasperated. Sitting down in the chair.
"Tt. So? You still have half the rainbow to try." Damian countered, even as he mixed the color. "Or you could be an actual person, and not a caricature."
Ever had a friend that was so honest it makes everyone uncomfortable? Yeah, that was Damian. Never spares anyone's feelings that one. Or conversational nukes, but that was a story for another day.
But I wouldn't have it any other way.
Damian Wayne: Aka Robin.
Nickname: Dami
My best friend.
He can be a little prickly but... he's the best.
"Just do it."
"Tt. When you have enough, tell me and I'll order Stone to repair the damage to your roots."
That wasn't to say I was his best friend, Dami had had alot of friends. Superboy, Nobody, Abuse, Suren, Mara Al Ghul. He wasn't friendly towards a lot of people, even to the rest of the Titans. But those who got past Dami being Dami...
"I don't care about my roots!" Mandy exclaimed, shaking her head. "Color it already!"

[Intruder Alert.]
"Intruders again." Mandy said with a sigh.
"Unfortunately, you'll have to do it yourself." Damian stated, passing the coloring. "Try not to stuff yourself the entire time."
"Die in a fire."
With that, he ran out.
[Intruder Alert.]
[Intruder Alert.]

Mandy followed him out of the bathroom over to the door of her room. Right by the lightswitch was a panic button. She slammed it.
Another layer of metal fell over the door and windows. The room going dark for a second, only lit by emergency lights.
[Intruder Alert.]
[Intruder Alert.]
"So annoying." Mandy said with a groan, covering her ears.
[Intruder Alert.]
[Intruder Alert.]
[Intruder Alert.]
Sadly, she couldn't read with her ears covered for the next hour or so until the intruders were gone. Nope. She had hair to color.
She looked at the brush dripping dye with a sigh.

I hate my life.
I live in Titans Tower. Glamorous, right?
The Titans Tower. Everyone's seen that a million times before now. Once a year, a lucky news reporter gets an interview inside. Usually some Titan's crush. Tons of pictures all over the internet. So... yeah, not much a secret. Not worth a week villain attack every week.
What they don't tell you, is that this is a place for two types of heroes.
"Oh, hey Mandy." Beast Boy greeted through a mouthful of cereal.
"Hello Mandy! I hope you weren't disturbed by the alarm." Starfire greeted, placing a plate of eggs and bacon on the table where Mandy sat down. "Dick made the eggs and bacon."
Most heroes were the types that come and go; Robin, Kid Flash(currently Irey), Nightwing, Aqualad.
And there was the type that doesn't leave. Ever.
If you don't have a secret identity, this is pretty much your home. Forever.
Beast Boy will tell you. Blue Beetle will tell you in a few years and he realizes the Scarab wouldn't pass as a backpack long enough for a secret identity. I'd tell them, if anyone asked.
"Is Mandy always like that?" One of the new titan whispered to Beast Boy.
I really needed to learn their name. Maybe next month, if they were still around?
"Yeah. Mandy's pretty shy." Beast Boy commented, only to get slapped in the back of the head by Raven.
"What?!"
"You promised you wouldn't talk about Mandy." Raven explained, in a deadpan voice. "Ever."
"I don't have to listen to you!"
"Well, if you don't mind defending yourself to Starfire."
I've been around heroes my whole life.
Sometimes, its just like talking to any other person. Others...
"Wow! Your Starfire's daughter?!"
Mandy grimaced. Not again.
Why is it that every time a new hero joined the Titans they latched onto that part. Not her name, or that she was a civilian. Starfire's daughter. At least he said Starfire not Koriand'r.
No. That was petty.
"Can you fly?! Do you have superstrength?! Energy blasts?! Do you have TTK like Superboy?!"
"No!" She screamed, before walking out.
"Your Starfire's daughter?!"
The first thing people think when they look at me is my Mom.
I was four, and wanted new toys.
The store was surrounded by reporters and fans. 'I love Starfire' signs being waved around, and screams of "Starfire!"
"Starfire! What would you like to tell the world about being a Mother?!" A reported who managed to get close to the door, yelled.
Starfire looked at Mandy with a smile. "Motherhood is the best thing in the world. I wouldn't trade my Myiand'r for all the galaxy."
I was loved. Always.
"What about the rumors that your giving up being a hero to raise your daughter?"
"No, I have had to make some changes, my daughter will always be my priority." Starfire told them, as she led Mandy inside. "This is my home, and now my daughters place of birth. I will always protect it."
Claps and screams.
"Whose the lucky father?"
But that doesn't mean it didn't... feel.
Mandy looked down. Trying to ignore all the attention. From heroes and civilians alike.
Mandy was horrified to realize her disguise fell as she walked down the road. The supermodel body she had programed in the computer was replaced by her normal, overweight self.
"Is that Starfire's daughter?" A stranger asked, while his friend waved.
Who are they?
"Not going to say anything?" The new hero/sidekick asked, disappointedly.
"Tt. Leave the cow alone, stooge." Damian told, pushing the new Titan out of the way. "This wouldn't happen if you took Nightwing's Apprenticeship."
Mandy ignored it.
"Or put some work into your attire."
"Now Damian, stop teasing Mandy." Starfire told Damian with a quaky smile. There was practically a speech bubble asking 'What is with this kid?'
Mom never knew what to think of Dami. To be fair, no one knew what to think of Damian.
"Why are you so big? Doesn't Starfire have a big metabolism?"
Another reason to hate Mom's groupies.
"Be nice." Starfire scolded, with a sharp look at the sidekick.
"Tt. Like you can cast stones Mr. Blubber." Damian told the sidekick, distastefully. "Come Anders, let's have our meal away from the rift raft."
Mandy smiled at her best friend. "Sure."
Damian always choses the roof.
I don't mind. It's our spot.
They were eating on a wood bench. In the middle of the rooftop garden. A butterfly landed on Mandy's shoulder, before flying off.
"The amateur's are insufferable." Damian confided, pausing in eating.
"You always say that about new heroes."
"Tt. A child has more skill then the new crop."
"Not many people can keep up with assassin kids, Damian."
"Tt. They could at least make the attempt. Instead, they continue parading around like imbecile's." Damian stated, wearing a prideful look. "One should always strive for excellence not mediocrity."
"Yeah. New Titans are usually pretty terrible."
"Not worth either of our attention." Damian dismissed, throwing her a smile that might have been empathy.
"Right." Mandy agreed, with a laugh. "Hey, Damian. Have you ever though of running away?"
"To where exactly? Space? My mother would send a platoon of assassins' every week." Damian asked, with a raised eyebrow. "That's if the contemptable idiots who I am forced to call my siblings don't track me down first."
I had forgot about Talia. Somehow.
Hard to believe, I know.
Days spent freaking out as ninja attack the tower. Only to be barely saved by one of the older Titans (all the founding members at this point), or Robin. Just before a really sharp sword, or a really sharp throw star hit somewhere fetal.
Eating chips, only to be saved just before Mandy got her throat cut.
Villainous monologues.
"The League of Assassins is an ancient organization. The League is the very best the world has to offer. Under the leadership of Ra's AL Ghul, we shall lead humanity to greatness."
"Damian should be here soon. And then he will join me in taking our rightful place as rulers of this evil world!"
"Beloved turned my son against me!"
"If my son refuses to take my side. Then he will learn the wrath of the Al Ghul!"
Being held above a literal shark tank. Screaming.
Being sealed into an authentic medieval torture room. Spending a night beside sharp blades, an iron maiden, and everything else.
Being thrown out a plane. Kicked off Titans Tower.
The terror of knowing you could die at any moment, and no amount of Tamaran training was going to make a difference with literal ninja's.
But Damian tries to ignore... that.
I'd also rather forget. But ninja's.
Mandy gave an awkward laugh. "I was thinking Paris."
"Paris? I didn't take you for the City of Harlots."
"I just want to get away." Mandy admitted. "There aren't any superheroes in France."
There was silence, as Damian seemed to think it over. If anyone understood being smothered like this, it was Damian.
Sure enough, Damian relaxed. Looking at her with new eyes. "Tt. At least do your research. The Justice League has multiple Embassies across the world, including Paris."
"I... didn't know that."
"And how would you leave? I am willing to offer security."
"I... running away?"
"Impractical. Starfire has access to alien technology, and Grayson. We would be found before we even reached the airport." At Mandy's despondent look, Damian responded. "I may not be that familiar with Starfire, however, I do not think the alien would be opposed to a vacation in Paris."
"So a Mom-approved vacation. That's your idea."
"It is not ideal. But if you think the Titans cannot find a lone civilian before nightfall, your sorely mistaken."
"I could wait until I'm an adult. Then they'll have to listen to me!"
"If you think overbearing parenting does not reach past adulthood, just look at Grayson."
"Batman's not the typical parent."
"Do you think Starfire would not follow my father's example?"
Maybe? Maybe not? Mandy didn't know, and judging by Damian's look, the Robin didn't have any idea either. "Maybe not?"
"However, there is a third option."
"Really? What?"
"Grayson's offer of an Apprenticeship is still open."
"Why do you want me to join Nightwing?" Mandy exclaimed, wringing her hands in frustration. "I though you'd be glad! I'm not taking up Grayson's attention!"
"Allies should aim for their fellow's success." Damian stated, turning away from Mandy. "It would be advantageous for you. You would no longer be stuck in Starfire's shadow."
"Your worried about me?" Mandy guessed, looking at Damian in surprise.
"No. You have taken care of yourself for this long."
Then why? Damian wasn't just pushy for no reason. Not unless...
"Your worried about Nightwing." Mandy realized, softly.
"Nightwing is more than capable as a solo hero. However, he does not operate at full capacity as a single unit. Even as a civilian guest, you could provide companionship." Damian reasoned, crossing his arms with a scowl. "The self defense lessons are only necessary if you want Starfire to let you leave the Tower before your thirty."
"I... Is that the only reason?"
"Tt. I confess I am... consolidating my allies. Using Kent as a taxi is a deplorable misuse of resources. However, it is necessary since I no longer have access to Father's jet. I can no longer meet with Ducan and within a reasonable time as Wilks or Grayson. I am attempting to induct Kent and Wilkins with my group. You and Grayson are a reasonable choice, that would benefit both parties."
So Damian wants to see me more often? How sweet.
"I'll think about it."
"Any choice you make on the subject will be highly subjective. You could change your mind at any time."
"I know."
I've lived my entire life around heroes.
It can be... terrifying.
I don't want to be a hero. I don't want to fight anyone. I don't want to live my entire life on lockdown, ignoring home intruders on a regular basis.
I want to complain about my life to my best friend. I want to be a normal, human girl. And what's wrong with that? It's not like I got powers, or some higher purpose. I was just born to an alien Mom, and lost the genetic lottery like a typical hybrid. Horribly.
I want to be Mandy Anders.
Notes: Even though this was inspired by 'I Am Not Starfire', I haven't exactly finished the comics. I kind of lost interest once I realized it was High School drama in a superhero setting. This is how I would've approached the story.
Mandy does have resentment towards her Mom; for making a normal life pretty much impossible, the problems because of her hybrid status, being compared to her mother on a regular basis. She recognizes that her mom is trying her best, and tries to keep that in mind when problems come up. Also, Damian's best friend remains Jon Kent. Mandy just doesn't have many friends. To Damian Wayne, Mandy's right up there with Maya and Mara.
Hopefully, Starfire isn't too out of character.
There's no pairing within this story, but Mandy may or may not have a crush. Damian doesn't get crushes (he's only thirteen, and being an Al Ghul, doesn't understand emotions).
