Chapter Three: In Which Crouches Are Caught
"You have now come very close to accusing the two people in this clearing who are least likely to conjure that Mark!" barked Mr Crouch. "Harry Potter — and myself! I suppose you are familiar with the boy's story, Amos?"
"Mr Crouch, weren't you the first one to accuse us of conjuring the Dark Mark? Didn't you ask 'which of you did it? Which of you conjured the Dark Mark?' Even though I'm least likely to conjure it according to you?" said Harry logically.
The Ministry wizards were nodding at this. The Potter boy was right, they all thought, but didn't have the guts to say out loud. Except for Arthur Weasley, of course.
"Harry is right. You are, no offense, being a hypocrite!"
"Er — that is — I mean —" fumbled Crouch.
Everyone in the clearing was now staring at him in disbelief.
He promptly Disapparated.
There was a silence.
"Hey, Ministry officials! Attention please!" said Harry loudly. "Do you guys have some sort of spell to detect invisible or hidden people? Because if someone was Stunned by you lot while invisible, we wouldn't find them easily, now would we? The Crouch guy acted rather suspicious, so he might have tried to cover up someone when he went into the woods to recheck."
"Er — yeah there is one," said Amos Diggory, pointing his wand in the general direction he had found Winky in. "Homenum Revelio!"
Bartemius Crouch Jr. was marked by the spell. His Stunned form was taken to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, where he was tried, interrogated and sentenced to life in Azkaban. Anti-Polyjuice protections were put in place on important magical locations. . . . Crouch Sr. was caught while on the run and given life in Azkaban for using the Imperius Curse.
All was well. Mostly.
AN: I really can't think of a reason why Amos would not use the Human-revealing spell instead of fumbling around in the woods. . . . Sure, he would have missed Winky at first, but he would have found her when he would go to check out the human presence marked by the spell.
Also, Crouch was the first one to accuse Harry and his mates of conjuring the Mark. Then he is lecturing Amos Diggory for doing the same thing?
