"I thought for sure you two would be out at the cabin with Luke," Donovan says as he stands by the grill. "It seems like most long weekends you are up there."
"Can't get every weekend off as you know," Kathleen says as she sits on the patio with Fay sleeping closer. "You of all people know how the city gets during a long weekend. Plus, it is wedding season."
"Everyone comes out of the woodwork," Donovan says as he looks over at them. "How's Gail handling it all?"
"She's being the ice queen," Kathleen says as she watches him. "Not trying to connect with her teammates. She always remarks about what someone else has done especially when it's not her. Then there's Sam."
"Ah, what about Luke?" Donovan asks as he turns his attention back to the grill. "He has to have some take on them."
"You have the kid that plays by the rules—the one who gets himself into trouble. The squeamish one," Kathleen starts as she hears her phone buzz. "Then you have the legacies. Gail has the instinct but lacks any true drive. McNally isn't sure of her place. I've heard she has a lionheart, but hasn't learned how to use it regarding the job."
"The first three need to learn to adjust to the job," Donovan says as he puts items on the plate. "The latter two need to stop trying to be their legacy and be their own cop."
"Are you going to tell Sam that?" Kathleen asks as she checks her phone messages. "You know the message will not help Gail at all. She thinks she has to live up to the Peck name."
"I hope Oliver, Noelle, Frank, Sam and Jerry can teach them that," Donovan says. He walks over and places the plate on the table. "All okay?"
"Yeah. A crappy day for rookies and training officers," she says as she texts away. "Though they did catch part of the robbery crew. Uncle Jason is wondering why you are not answering your phone, as he needs to unwind."
"That bad," he asks as he sits down across from her.
"Home invasion turned into a hostage situation," she rattles off. "Including rookies abandoning each other in an unsafe situation and no training officers."
"Oh man, I'd hate the write-up on that one," he says as he fixes himself a burger. "Anything else from lovely fifteen?"
"Sammy got bit by a dog. He is on his way to the clinic, and Luke still has a mountain of paperwork. Jerry and Oliver took off for the night," she says as she puts together a veggie burger. "I told him the three of us were in the backyard, enjoying burgers and to join us."
"Which one?" he asks as he takes a bite.
"All three of them," she returns as she takes a bite of her burger. "Uncle Jason said he'd be here in under twenty minutes."
"That works for me," he says as he takes another burger. "What about you? How are you coping with everything?"
"I'm good," she says as she pauses. "Things have been working out as they are supposed to. Luke and I may be looking at a couple of houses next week. Then I have to speak to the daycare center about that process."
"Busy beaver," he says as he finishes his burger. "Plus, you have that work interview?"
"Yes, there is that as well, but you know me," she says as she finishes her burger. "I've never sat idle for long periods."
"True," he says before pausing and then smiling. "What do you say I take Fay for a couple of hours next weekend? You and Luke go check out the Taste of the Danforth Festival."
She looks at him, pauses and then answers, "are you sure? I know you have a lot of big cases to prepare for."
He gives her a look. "I can handle my granddaughter for a few hours while you two have fun."
"You're going to let him babysit," Jason says as he enters the side yard. "Are you insane?"
"Are you being serious, Jason?" Donovan says as the other man walks over to the table.
"You and newborns do not get along at all," Jason says as he sits between Donovan and Kathleen. "Aileen rarely left you alone with your own daughter."
"I was only offering to babysit, so she and Luke could go to the Danforth festival," Donovan says as he looks over. "It would only be for a few hours."
"Try your aunt and uncle or cousins," Jason says as he makes himself a burger. "They would be the best bet."
"Come on," Donovan asks as he looks at him. "I didn't poison or kill her."
Kathleen shakes her head as she stands up and walks through the screen door. She walks through the kitchen to the fridge and pulls out a couple of bottles of beer and places them on the counter. As she hears the side gate open again and grabs the bottle opener from the door. She then reaches into the fridge and pulls out a couple of more bottles.
She gathers the items before walking out. Not surprised to see Sam join the other two men. Though the sight of the three grown men cooing over Faylinn as she had only woken up from an evening nap. She places the bottles on the table before taking her seat across from her dad. "How was the clinic?" she asks as she notices the bandage on Sam's arm.
"Don't want to discuss it," he says as he opens a beer and takes a sip. "No dogs ever."
"Come on, Sam, this little one will need a puppy of her own one day," Jason says as he opens his beer. "You got the paperwork filled out."
"Of course," Sam says as he sips on his beer. "At least there were no stitches. I need a new undercover assignment. Too much drama."
"Not till mid-September, mister," Kathleen says as she shoots him and the other two men with a glare. "I mean it, you ruin her christening."
"We won't," the three of them say as Faylinn looks at them, confused.
"Good, I have a crazy aunt and I am not afraid to use her," she says as she smiles at Faylinn. "I should have the dates by the end of next week."
"Sam, what do you say about Donovan babysitting?" Jason asks as he looks at him.
"No comment," he says as he grabs a burger. "I refuse to answer that question on the grounds of either of you using me to make a point. Though I have limited newborn and infant experience, I am always willing to call in Oliver if I need him."
"Good to know," Kathleen says as she watches the three of them.
"This is all you," Jason says as he grabs a burger and shoots a look at Sam. "You trained him this way."
"Never said it was a bad thing till now," Donovan retorts as he smiles.
Kathleen smiles as she laughs at the perplexed face of both Sam and Jason.
