Chapter Twenty-Two: My Immortal

[B&T]

''She's spending too much time with you,'' Barney said while he looked at Gabrielle.

She was sitting in their new truck, waiting for them to finish preparing for what they hoped to be the final battle against the Sangs.

''Or just enough,'' Trench replied while thinking about Church's face when she spoke to him.

''At least I know now that she isn't defenceless,'' Barney sighed.

''You wanted to protect her. Nobody's gonna blame you for that,'' Trench said. ''And you know I'll be there. Oh, and don't make her wait, Maggie seems like a nice woman.''

''No idea what you're talking about.'' Barney smiled, and Trench lit up a cigar.

But he did. The timing was shit and the situation chaotic, but he wasn't one to ignore a woman such as Maggie. She was beautiful, and at first, he'd thought she'd be a handful, but she was a good person. He could tell from how much she'd helped when she didn't have to. And the way she'd support both him and his daughter.

''Yeah, no idea at all.'' Mocked Trench and Barney shook his head with an amused smiled before he went to Tool.

[G&Y]

''Gabrielle?'' Yang asked, and she smiled at him.

''Hey,'' She said with a small voice. ''How are you?''

''Fine. And you?'' he asked, and she sighed.

''Can't wait for this to be over. I want to go back home,'' she admitted.

''You will, I promise,'' Yang assured her, and she took his hand.

''Thank you, but don't kill yourself in the process,'' she replied, and he smiled.

[G&Toll]

It was almost time. The plans were done, and they were waiting for the green light by Church. He saw Gabrielle put a piece of paper in her pocket, and he went to her.

''You ok?'' he asked, and she sighed.

''You know everybody's been asking me that?'' she said, and he offered her a small smile.

''We just want to make sure you're safe,'' he said, and she looked at him with tears in her eyes. ''We can't let anything happen to you. You're too important to me, to us.''

''You're important to me too. All of you,'' she said. '' So please, protect yourself too. Promise me you won't put yourself in danger for me.''

''Gabrielle…'' he said.

''Promise me!'' she begged, and he nodded before he took her in his arms.

''Promise,'' he agreed, and she hugged him back.

''You really are my best friend,'' she said, and he smiled.

[G&L]

''Alright, so you got everything you need,'' Lee concluded while she finished putting on her combat attire.

There was a pregnant pause before she spoke.

''Lee, I...'' she began, and he looked at her straight in the eyes. ''I…''

''I know, it's okay darling,'' he whispered. ''At least you're still here with us.''

She felt the tears rolling down her cheeks, and he took her hand.

''I just want you to be happy,'' he said.

''I want you to be happy too. I love you,'' she replied.

''I know, love. I do,'' he said before he let go of her hand.

He kissed her on the cheek before he went to see Barney. Neither of them saw the other cry, whether it be by guilt or lost love.

[G&H]

''Gabes!'' Hale said when he saw her cry.

He then got in the truck and took her in his arms.

''I am sorry it's just…'' she tried to explain before she cried even more.

''It's ok. It'll all be over soon,'' he reassured her.

''Thank you,'' she said.

''Of course,'' he replied before Toll called him.

''Be careful,'' was all she told him before he went to join the others.

[G&B&T]

''You too?'' she joked, and Barney smiled.

''We'd never leave without saying goodbye,'' her father said before he hugged her.

''I love you, please come back,'' she said.

''I'll do my best,'' Barney offered, and she felt the tears coming back full force.

''We'll do more than that,'' Tool promised before he hugged her too. ''Don't worry, sweetheart. We'll be back before you can miss us.''

''Love you too,'' she said before she saw Gunnar running towards them.

[G&G]

He watched her father and Tool turn around and ran faster. There wasn't much time left before they would go back to work. He got in the truck and took her in his arms before he kissed her.

''I love you so much,'' he said.

''I love you too, more than you can even imagine,'' she said with a broken voice. ''Please be careful. It would kill me to lose you.''

''Don't say that,'' he said, dead serious before he added in a softer tone. ''I am sorry for my harsh words, but I don't like the fact that you're in danger or hurt. I hate it, älskling. So, if I have to die so you can live, or fight for you to live as you used to, I will. ''

''Fight all you want, but come back to me. It would break my soul to lose you. I can't live in a world without you,'' Gabrielle said through her tears.

''I can't either,'' he said against her lips. ''Marry me.''

She felt the world stop at his words. She couldn't believe he asked her to marry him. She loved him so much, she couldn't see her life without him, she…

She saw Lee looking at them from a distance.

''You're everything, and I never could've abandoned you. I never will, no matter how you want me in your life,'' he'd said.

She then looked at Gunnar.

''We aren't ourselves on drugs,'' she'd said. ''And he ought to understand that people can change. I think…. I know that you aren't perfect but I…I love you Gunnar, and you might just be perfect for me.''

She kissed him on the lips. He kissed her back like his life depended on it.

''So, should I take that as a yes?'' he asked with a smile.

She was about to answer him when they heard Church scream on the radio.

[Gabrielle]

I was shaking. The tears would simply not stop. I'd been so sure about me and Gunnar, so why this? Why Lee? Why now? Everyone was assuming that I was crying because I was scared, and I was. Only it wasn't just the mission anymore.

What on fucking earth had happened? I loved Gunnar so much it was like he was a part of my soul. It was powerful, intense, strong, and overwhelming. Why had it been so hard to try and say yes? Why the hesitation at all?

''He gave up on you.'' I thought as I broke into a sobbing mess on the floor. ''He may say he loves you, but he gave up on you. Ad he may do it again. What do you think he meant by living as you used to? He won't let you be one of them. Do you want to be one of them?''

''Shut up!'' I exclaimed while I held my knees to my chest.

''Lee didn't give up. He would never.'' My mind added.

''SHUT UP! I am not like that. I love Gunnar and Gunnar only!'' I screamed before I added in a whisper. ''He was there, wasn't he?''

But my mind wouldn't shut up, and my heart still felt echoes of the pain of when he had abandoned me. Worse, it reminded me of the fact that he didn't like what I was becoming even though I couldn't help it. Would I be good enough?

He did help me when I hurt myself…but he was gone as soon as I had a relapse. But he had apologized; he wanted me to marry him. That had to count, right? My brain was fucked up. I needed to breathe. I got up and went out of the truck.

I realized my mistake a second to late as I was thrown on the ground. Before I could try and do something, Igor put one of his hands on my throat to keep me in place while I tried to grab my knife.

''Lucky you, we still need you alive,'' he said before I felt a needle in my chest.

It was as if he'd set fire to my veins, and I screamed. He started laughing before he stopped moving altogether. Then he dropped dead, and I could see a man behind him.

His beard was as blond as his hairs, and he looked concerned. I tried to speak, but I couldn't.

''Don't move,'' he said before he took the syringe. ''What the fuck?''

I was about to try and ask him what was going on when we heard another truck coming. The bullets were going straight through the walls of the truck, and he dropped the syringe to take his rifle. I smelled gas and fought the pain to try and get away.

The man turned and told me to run if I could. I had no other choice but to try. The truck exploded seconds later, and I kept running. I simply hoped that there weren't any Sangs coming my way because I would die. Fuck I was dying.

I reached the airport and took a break from the running. My head was spinning, and my wounds had started bleeding again. I was breathless. I saw Hale and Toll and tried to scream for help, but I was too weak, and they didn't hear me. I turned and saw Church, Trench and Tool, still too far away. I could barely move at this point. Everything hurt way too much. Then I saw Gunnar coming my way. I sighed in relief before I saw a shadow behind him and took what little strength I had left to push him out the way.

It happened so fast. Too fast. The bullet went through me, and I finally was able to scream in pain before I fell into Gunnar's arms.

''HELP ME!'' he screamed too, and I could see the panic on his face.

'' Gunnar,'' I tried to say before I choked on my blood.

The pain was unbearable, but I didn't have much time left.

''Why did you do this?!'' he asked as he tried to stop the bleeding. ''HELP!''

''Yes,'' I simply said. ''I would have married you.''

The last thing I saw or heard was him breaking down in tears.

[Lee]

He'd heard Gunnar's screams before he'd killed Hector and ran to him. He could feel the panic rising; Gunnar Jensen never called for help. He turned the corner of a corridor before he dropped his gun at the sight before him. He got down on his knees beside Gabrielle and saw her unseeing eyes. She was not breathing. She was…No.

''Gabrielle don't do this to me! GABRIELLE!'' he screamed before he closed her eyes with a shaking hand. ''You promised. I love you, please don't go.''

Then he broke down too.

[Team]

The shooting had almost stopped when they heard Gunnar's first cry for help. The blood froze in their veins. Gunnar didn't call for help, not even when he was dying. Hale and Toll had just freed themselves when they heard Lee's begging.

''GABRIELLE!'' he had screamed, and they had run.

Toll was the first one to realize what was in front of them and accelerated before falling on the ground near them, Hale following right behind him.

''No!'' Toll screamed before he took her wrist and tried to find a pulse.

Hale felt the tears rolling down his cheeks as he looked at Toll.

''She's gone,'' he told him, and they both felt like the air had left their lungs.

Lee looked at them for a moment before he got up and threw a garbage can against the wall.

''FUCK!'' he screamed, and Toll got up to take him in his arms to try and calm him.

Gunnar was still caressing Gabrielle's hair while apologizing between his sobs.

Hale didn't dare say anything. He didn't even know what to say. It hurt too much.

''What the fuck is happening here…'' Barney started before he felt his heart stop.

The scream he made was not human, and he would have fallen to the ground had it not been for Trench's reflexes.

Not that he was any better himself. Not that any of them were. Trench was trying to catch his breath while Yang felt like he'd been slapped into shock. Tool got closer before he had to stop and throw up. It was like their hearts had been ripped from their chests.

Lee had let himself slid against the wall and held his knees to his chest. Gunnar was still talking to himself. Yang had sat on a bench with silent tears rolling down his cheeks. Hale was trying to not lose his shit by holding one of her hands. Toll had finally broken down in tears. Trench and Tool were trying to hold each other while Maggie, Booker and Church were making arrangements, and Barney…

Barney was holding his daughter like his life depended on it.

But it was too late.

Gabrielle was dead.
