The beginning of a curse
Alexia was running, the stones were falling like shower, she quickly ducked them and looked around. Arthur was lying unconscious. She ran to him. Patting his face. No response. Suddenly she was now in deep forests. She looked around. The surroundings were dark. Her heart was pumping loudly. And then, a scream was heard.Alexia woke up, gasping loudly.
Merlin quickly jerked up hearing the noise. He saw Alexia panting and sweating.
"Are you fine?" He asked.
Alexia looked at him and shrugged.
"Let's get to the prat. He would throwing his royal tantrums due to these drilling noises." Alexia said getting up.
Merlin followed her suit.
"Well, don't you think the past days have been a bit peaceful. No assassin, no danger, no magical beast. It looks like it's finally normal." Merlin mused, munching his bread.
"I won't believe that even for a second. This is calm before a huge storm I can assure you that." Alexia scoffed.
"So what is going to happen next?" Merlin asked.
"I don't remember particularly. Maybe after some hints I will remember. It's like more than two years I saw the episode." Alexia told the warlock while she took a bite from her bread.
Merlin nodded alongside.
"So.. ready?" He asked.
Alexia nodded.
"Let's move then." And they exited the room to go on their duties for the prat prince.
Greeting everyone they met or saw, Alexia and Merlin reached the kitchens.
"Looks like here we part our ways." Alexia said.
Merlin nodded.
"I will go and bring Arthur's washed clothes, while you serve him breakfast." Alexia said.
Merlin shook his head.
"Why is it that you always go to get his laundry while I have to wake the prat?" Merlin asked.
"He likes when you do so." Alexia shrugged with a smirk.
"Your 'rise and shine' quote just makes his day!" Alexia said cheerfully, air quoting 'rise and shine' with her fingers.
Merlin laughed.
"Okay!" He said and entered the kitchen.
Alexia smiled at his retreating figure and left.
It was afternoon when Alexia bumped into sir Edward.
"Sir Edward!" Alexia said and courtisied.
"You don't need to do this Alexia, after all we are friends!" The knight said with a huge smile.
Alexia gave a smile in return.
"So are you having any plans for tonight?" He asked.
"Uh..." Alexia stammered.
"Hmm?" Sir Edward encouraged.
"Actually you know, Arthur had some work with me, I mean us, I mean me and Merlin. So... I don't think so I will be able to..." Alexia said with a sad smile.
"I can talk with the prince!" Sir Edward said.
"Umm.. I am sorry sir, but there will be no need." Alexia denied politely.
"Ok. So today evening?" He asked hopefully.
Alexia groaned internally.
"We can go on a walk?" She suggested.
"Excellent!" Sir Edward said cheerfully and left.
Alexia looked at the retreating knight sadly.
As the evening arrived, Alexia and Merlin were in Arthur's chambers who was sitting on his desk drifting into sleep.
Alexia saw him and cleared her throat loudly, jerking him awake. Merlin chuckled while Arthur groaned.
"I think you need something for your throat Alexia." Arthur said irritated.
"And I think you need something for your sleep." Alexia retorted. A huge thump was heard.
Arthur rolled his eyes.
"And you expect me to sleep in these noises. Honestly how you two sleep in such loud noises." Arthur asked.
"We were not given these royal treatment since childhood, like some prat here, we have slept in worse of conditions." Merlin said joking.
Arthur picked up a nearby goblet and threw it at Merlin who ducked and laughed.
"You need some target practice." Merlin teased. Arthur mumbled something incoherent and Alexia laughed at the pair. The knock on the door disturbed the banter.
Alexia turned to open the door and was surprised to see sir Edward.
"Alexia!" He said cheerfully.
"Sir Edward!" Alexia said and glanced back in room to see Merlin and Arthur looking at her in confusion.
"Let's go." He said.
Alexia nodded with a fake smile.
"Just allow me to excuse myself from the prince." Alexia said and closed the door.
She looked at the two men.
"If it would be all sire?" Alexia asked.
Arthur nodded still confused.
Alexia left the room.
Merlin and Arthur looked at each other.
"Do you think...?" He asked.
"I am not sure from sir Edward, but from Alexia it's a no. Maybe sir Edward is so high in his head he is not able to see." Merlin said. But Arthur found a bit of anger in his voice.
He simply smirked.
While the walk, Alexia just listened to the knight's bragging, humming in between.
"So Alexia, what are your plans for marriage?" Sir Edward asked.
Alexia stopped in her tracks and her eyes widened.
"Sorry?" She asked.
"You are becoming of age. Surely you have to get marry soon." Sir Edward said.
"I didn't think about marrying." She said honestly.
"Ahh." Sir Edward mused.
"Well then you must do soon." He said.
Alexia just nodded her head dumbly and bid her goodbye to the knight. The referred knight cheered as Alexia left.
It was night. Alexia and Merlin were doing some of their last work for the day. The drilling noises were growing. At the workplace, the workers were mining the walls when one of them hit a wall which broke. The worker looked at other who all covered their noses at the horrible smell. The earlier man took a torch and glanced inside and saw something. He took his tool and quickly digging the wall, he made a tunnel.
Meanwhile, after completing the work Merlin and Alexia finally left the room.
Arthur groaned as he was not able to sleep.
"Merlin." Arthur called getting up. "Merlin!" Arthur called again annoyed.
"Yes, Sire?" Merlin asked. Entering the room.
"Are you deaf?" Arthur asked.
"I wish." Merlin replied thinking of the upcoming tantrum.
"I want you to go down there and tell them to stop." Arthur ordered.
"But they're working under the King's orders." Merlin said.
"Yes, and you're working under mine." Arthur yelled and slumped back.
Merlin just shook his head and exited the room.
"What happened?" Alexia asked.
"He wants us to stop the noises." Merlin said.
In the mines, few men entered the tomb and looked around. The place was filled with jewels and gold. In centre was tomb, at whose centre, was a glowing blue jewel. One of the workers moved towards the jewel and by mistake, stepped on a trap and was killed by an arrow. The others looked horrified and ran from there.
Alexia and Merlin went down and entered the working place. Merlin took a torch from its handle and they moved inside.
But they stopped as they saw the workers running out yelling and afraid.
Alexia and Merlin looked at each other.
They moved a bit forward. As they saw the entrance to the tomb, they entered.
Alexia looked shocked. This was the curse of Cornelius Sigan. Merlin moved forward to the tomb but Alexia quickly grabbed his arm. He looked at her while she shook her head pointing at the man.
Merlin called, "Hello!" But when no reply came, he touched his shoulder and the man fell backwards. Alexia gasped loudly, clapping her hands at her mouth, looking at the dead man while Merlin took a step back.
They looked at each other and went out.
After sometime, Alexia, Merlin and Gaius were in the tomb. Merlin was bent down on the dead body.
"How do you think he died? Gaius?" Merlin asked.
"Hmm?" He asked. Merlin got up.
"Do you know whose tomb it is?" He asked. Alexia opened her mouth to say but Gaius beat her.
"Not sure." He said. She opened her mouth to tell them she knew before Merlin asked, "Do you think it might be cursed?"
Gaius looked around and moved forward. He stepped on a trap. A stone bird shot a dart at Gaius. Alexia moved forward, while Merlin's eyes flashed gold and a plate moved between the dart and Gaius.
"You just saved my life. Thank you." Gaius said.
"Will you two listen to me please?" Alexia all but yelled.
Both turned to her.
"I know everything. I know who he is, if this place is cursed and what would happen. So if you will give me a chance to speak, may I?" Alexia asked.
But before anyone could say anything, Uther and Arthur entered.
Alexia rolled her eyes, while Merlin dropped the plate. It rolled towards Uther's feet. Merlin quickly ran behind the plate and picked it up.
"Idiot." Uther said, passing him.
"Were you born clumsy or do you work at it?" Arthur asked.
"It's just one of my many gifts." Merlin said with a smile.
"Well this is quite a find. You see, Gaius, I was right. There is treasure to be found under Camelot. Which of my predecessors do I have to thank for all this? Gaius?" Uther asked moving from here to there.
"Uh, I'd have to look into it, Sire." Gaius said glancing at Alexia and then pretending to look at one of the box.
Uther's eyes fell on the dead worker.
"How did he die?" He asked.
"He seems to have unwittingly triggered a trap here." Gaius said.
"To deter grave robbers" Arthur mused.
"Well there's plenty in here people would want to steal. Have them secure the tomb. Guarding it is your responsibility, Arthur." Uther said.
"Yes, Father." Arthur nodded.
As the night moved forward, it was raining heavily and in the lower town, in the tavern two men could be seen sitting there infront of each other, as the tavern was filled with many other peple.
"So this jewel, what size would you say it was?" One of the two men asked.
"About that size." Tom replied, showing him his closed fist as an indication of size.
"My word, really? About that size, you say? Well, I never. Here you are. Drink up. And, uh, this tomb. I bet they got that locked up nice and safe, haven't they?" The man said sneakily.
"Tighter than the King's coffers." Tom said scoffing.
"Yeah. Must be a way in, though." The man said.
"Only with the keys." Tom replied.
"Right, right, right. And who's got the keys?" The man asked slyly.
"uh..." Tom started but stopped. "You must think I'm stupid. I'm not telling you that." Tom said.
"Course not. No, a bright lad like you knows what that sort of information's worth. No, we don't want everyone to see. Believe me, this place is full of thieves and finger-smiths. Put it inside your tunic. And, uh, careful of that fellow over there." The man said pointing.
"Which one?" Tom asked.
"Far end of the bar. See him? He keeps on watching you." The man said warning.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. With, with the beard." Tom said realising.
"No, no. That one." The man said pointing at the bald one.
"Ah, I got my eye on him. Thank you." Tom thanked him.
"So who's got the keys?" The man said smirking a bit.
"Only the Prince. But don't get your hopes up. He keeps them in his private chambers, and there's only two persons allowed in there: his servants." Tom replied.
A look appeared on the man's face.
Later, in physician's chambers.
"The tomb is of Cornelius Sigan. And the blue jewel we saw is actually a crystal holding his soul." Alexia said.
"It means the legends are true." Gaius said surprised.
"What legends?" Merlin asked.
"Merlin, Sigan was the most powerful sorcerer to have lived." Gaius said.
"Really?" Merlin asked.
"Not more than Emrys." Alexia mumbled.
"You didn't grow up in Camelot, but for those of us that did, Cornelius Sigan was a figure of nightmare." Gaius said.
"Oh, yeah ask me about it." Alexia muttered sarcastically.
"Why?" Merlin asked.
"Sigan's powers. He could change day into night, turn the tides, and legend has it, his spells helped build Camelot itself." Gaius said.
"What an irony, a country born of magic and magic is outlawed here." Alexia voiced her thoughts.
Both Merlin and Gaius looked at her while Merlin agreed.
"There are some reasons." Gaius said.
Alexia just raised a brow and gave a look which clearly said i-know-don't-try-to-fool-me.
Gaius cleared his throat and turned to Merlin.
"In the end, he grew too powerful and the king at that time ordered his execution." Gaius said.
"If he's dead, why are you so worried?" Merlin asked looking at Gaius and Alexia.
"Sigan couldn't bear the thought that his wealth and power would die with him, so he became obsessed with finding a way to defeat death itself." Gaius said.
"You think he might have succeeded?" Merlin asked.
"I know he did succeed." Alexia said.
The trio looked at each other gravely.
Next day, Alexia and Merlin woke up.
"We are going on a hunt today." Merlin said with a sarcastic cheer.
"Merlin, I didn't tell you about everything, but let me tell you, be careful for few days. Please. Don't give Arthur any chance to be mad at you. Rest I will handle." Alexia said.
Merlin looked confused, but he knew better than to argue with her. She obviously knew more than he knew.
In the square after some time.
"Hurry up, Merlin." Arthur called to his servants as both Merlin and Alexia climbed down the stairs.
"Sorry." Merlin said, before kneeing down so Arthur could climb.
Alexia glared at Arthur for this.
"What?" Arthur asked.
"Isn't it too much?" Alexia asked in a low voice so that no-one else could hear.
"He is my servant." Arthur countered.
"He is also a human." Alexia said.
Arthur frowned, but climbed regardless. Alexia looked away, in anger.
But looked back as she heard a thump and shout.
"Merlin!" Arthur yelled. As he stood from the ground where he feel due to loose girth.
The horse ran forward and from the corner of her eyes she saw a man moving towards it.
Alexia quickly rushed forward and grabbed the horse calming him by running her hand on his nuzzle.
She heard Merlin.
"I don't understand." Merlin said.
"Well, there's a surprise." Arthur said irritated.
"I did that girth up myself." Merlin swore.
"Well, I think that might have been the problem!" Arthur said.
"It wasn't my fault." Merlin said.
"It was perfect Arthur. I saw from my own eyes. It appears someone did it intentionally after the horse was left alone." Alexia said eyeing the man, which she assumed was Cedric, while bringing the horse back.
"Stop covering for him Alexia." Arthur said.
Suddenly the man stepped forward.
"Would you like me to fit the girth properly for you, Sire." The man asked.
"Thank you." Arthur said setting his jacket back. Alexia raised a brow at Arthur.
"It's an honour to be of service to the Prince." The man said.
"An honour. Do you hear that Merlin? Alexia?" Arthur asked his servants.
"Allow me the honour of brushing your clothes down." The man said.
"The honour." Arthur whispered to Alexia and Merlin.
"Bootlicker." Alexia whispered back.
"Anything else I can do for you, sir."
"Well, you can give Merlin here a kick up the backside." Arthur said.
"I wouldn't wish to deprive you of the pleasure, sir." Cedric said chuckling. Merlin just looked amused.
"Ha! What's your name?" Arthur asked.
"Cedric. I've come to Camelot in search of work." Cedric said.
"Good. You can be a beater on the hunt. We're short of a man or two." Arthur said. Alexia huffed in anger while Merlin gave her a confusing look.
"You're too kind, Sire." Cedric said bowing as Arthur passed to go to his horse.
"Here. You'll need a beater." Merlin said, 'accidentally' hitting his stomach. "Oh, sorry." Merlin apologized before leaving, with Alexia following him.
Alexia and Merlin along with Arthur and his hunting party, sneaked around the woods to find a hunt. Suddenly a voice was heard and Arthur raised his hand to warn his party.
The trees rustled and suddenly a huge wild boar came into view running towards them.
Everyone stepped back and prepared fir the stance except Merlin and Cedric. Merlin moved sideways to Alexia while Cedric stepped back untill he hit a tree and hid behind.
Arthur threw his spear at the boar but it didn't harm. His eyes widened while Alexia urged Merlin. Merlin looked at the spear in Alexia's hands and his eyes glowed gold.
"Flíe 'fǽgð." He chanted and the spear shot out from her hand hitting and killing the boar. Alexia's eyes widened a bit, before she relaxed. She knew what was coming next and prepared herself.
"Sorry!" She whispered to Merlin. When he turned to ask why, he was interrupted by Arthur.
"Who threw that?" Arthur asked looking around. Cedric was about to move forward but Alexia stepped forward.
"Honestly Arthur, saved by a girl." Alexia said with a small smile.
"You?" Arthur asked shocked.
"Who else?" Alexia asked and nobody stepped forward.
Cedric looked angry at the loss of opportunity.
"Well I never knew you were into hunting." Arthur said.
Alexia's eyes saddened.
"Either it was you or the boar." She said softly and moved towards the boar. Placing her hand on the animal.
Arthur chuckled.
"Only you can mourn on the hunt of a deadly animal." Arthur said.
"He wasn't doing us any harm, if we wouldn't have stepped in his territory." Alexia retorted.
"I think we shall move back." Merlin suggested and everone nodded.
While on the way to back, Merlin moved beside Alexia.
"Why did you do that?" Merlin asked.
"Cedric was going to take the credit if I wouldn't have. And Arthur wouldn't have believed if you said you killed it." Alexia explained.
Merlin nodded, finally understanding.
"We have to take care of this Cedric Merlin." Alexia said.
Merlin looked at her and then at Cedric who was carrying the dead boar riding beside Arthur.
Suddenly they heard Arthur laughing, at something Cedric said.
Alexia groaned. While Merlin looked agitated.
As Alexia and Merlin returned they saw Gaius looking into books.
"Have you talked to Uther?" Merlin asked.
"I wanted to collect some proofs first." Gaius said.
"Isn't what Alexia said enough?" Merlin asked irritated.
"What got you so up today?" Gaius asked his ward.
"Nothing, just a man who was about to take the credit saving Arthur's life when I did it. And then knowing that the man is a thief and will try to get my job and then unleash the soul of Sigan." Merlin said slumping on the chair.
Alexia moved towards him and placed her hand on his shoulder.
"Don't worry Merlin. We can do this." Alexia said. Merlin nodded.
"I will go to Uther." Gaius said and exited the chambers.
In the chambers of doom, Uther sat on his throne eating his meal, while Gaius entered.
"Gaius. What is it you want?" Uther asked.
"To seal up the burial chamber and all its contents." Gaius replied.
"Don't be ridiculous." Uther said.
"The insignia on this ring belongs to Cornelius Sigan. I believe it to be his tomb. In the Old Religion, the name Sigan means raven." Gaius informed him, while Uther motioned him to give the ring and Gaius gave him.
"No wonder the riches are so great." Uther said passing the seal back.
"Then you are aware of the legends, Sire?" Gaius asked.
"Yes. I have always enjoyed the tale of the arrogant sorcerer who came to an untimely end." Uther said.
"According to the story, Sigan cursed Camelot. He said he would return and raze the city to the ground." Gaius said.
"Gaius, you have long been my ally in the war against sorcery. You, more than anyone, should not give in to these irrational fears." Uther said.
"Thank you, Sire." Gaius said bowing and leaving.
"And Gaius." Uther called from behind causing Gaius to turn. "Do not spread panic amongst my people. This is foolish superstition, nothing more." Uther completed.
Gaius looked grim but nodded and left.
In Morgana's chambers, Morgana twisted and turned on her, gasping. Her eyes fluttering due to the nightmare. She saw a raven bird coming, which screamed loudly.
"Ah!" Morgana screamed. Gwen? Gwen!" Morgana called. Gwen rushed in, moving ti Morgana and hugging her.
"My Lady? My Lady, what's the matter? It's alright, it's alright. I'm here. I'm here. There's nothing to be frightened of. Shh, shh, shh." Gwen calmed her.
Next morning, Alexia and Merlin woke up.
Moving for their jobs, Merlin and Alexia parted ways.
Merlin entered Arthur's chambers with breakfast.
"Is that lunch?" Arthur asked Merlin who was closing the door behind.
"No, it's breakfas..." Merlin stopped as he saw Arthur already having a huge breakfast with Cedric standing beside him with a smirk.
"This is lovely, Cedric." Arthur commented.
"What is he doing here?" Merlin asked.
"Ah Merlin, you see, Cedric required a post in royal household, and I quite liked his talks. So I decided..."
"But you already have two servants. Both me and Alexia." Merlin cut him off.
"I know Merlin. And Cedric is just here for few days, after that he will be assigned to another lord." Arthur said.
"And the damage would have been done." Merlin muttered.
"Did you say anything?" Arthur asked.
"No, my lord. Is there anything else that you need doing, Sire?" Merlin asked, the sire word lacking all the respect it should have.
"No, I think Cedric's got it all covered." Arthur said.
"Oh, I regret, Sire, there is one thing I failed to do. Uh, muck out your horses." Cedric said sadly.
"Off you go." Arthur said. Motioning him to leave. Cedric moved forward.
"I'll get the door for you." He said opening the door, but to everyone's surprise Alexia entered the room.
"Arthur, Trina said someone already..." Alexia started but stopped, as she saw Cedric there with his smirk.
"Yes Alexia. Cedric already brought me my washed clothes." Arthur said.
"Now Merlin, what are you waiting for?" Arthur asked.
Merlin just shoot a glare at him and left with Alexia.
"What the hell just happened?" Alexia whispered as they left.
"That jerk, he trapped Arthur in his sweet talks. And now will be his servant for few days." Merlin said.
Alexia groaned as Merlin moved forward.
"Where are you going?" Alexia asked.
"To muck out the stables." Merlin said.
Alexia thought for a moment before following him.
"No... Merlin, it's a trap..." Alexia trialed off as she saw Merlin rounding the corridor.
She ran after him.
In Morgana's chambers, Morgana was sitting on her bed, while Gaius examined her.
"What was this dream about?" Gaius asked.
"A bird." Morgana said.
"What kind of bird?"
"A raven."
"A raven?" Gaius asked.
"It was terrifying, Gaius. What do you think it means?" Morgana asked.
"Probably nothing." Gaius said.
"It's happening again, isn't it?" Morgana asked.
"Morgana, one raven doesn't mean that your nightmares are returning. Are you taking the sleeping draughts I prepared for you? I'll get Gwen to give you something stronger." Gaius said getting up.
"Like a blow to the head? I'm sure she wants to." Morgana said sadly as Gaius left.
In the royal stables Merlin was mucking out the stables.
Alexia quickly entered and hid behind the door. Suddenly a ball was thrown, which released smoke, making Merlin unconscious as he fell.
Alexia hid behind as Cedric entered.
As he moved towards the first horse, Alexia stepped forward.
"Why are you doing this?" Alexia asked.
Cedric turned around horrified.
"What you are planning to do is clear Cedric." Alexia said giving him her deadliest glare.
"What are you saying?" Cedric asked.
"Let me tell you." She said and moved forward.
"Prince Arthur!" Cedric said bowing quickly.
Alexia turned quickly, but realised it was a trick as she saw nothing. She turned back and saw Cedric running out.
She sighed.
Moving to Merlin, Alexia placed her hand on his forehead. Her eyes flashed gold and Merlin woke up.
"Ugh!" He yelped and got up.
"What happened?" He asked holding his head.
Alexia sighed and took his arm taking him upstairs.
As they entered the physician's chambers, Alexia moved to pick a towel and clearing his face.
"You are way too much innocent Merlin." Alexia said softly.
"Arthur doesn't think that. According to him, I am an idiot." Merlin said, finally letting his feelings out.
"It's been more than an year I have helped him. Served him. Saved him. But still he doesn't believe me." Merlin said looking down.
Alexia cupped his cheeks and raised his face.
"Don't Merlin. Don't think that. Arthur cares for you. Way too much. But he himself doesn't realise. He never had any real friends. And since childhood he is taught that servants can't be friends. How can you think it would change so soon?" Alexia asked softly.
"I... I just want him to accept me. To see who I am." Merlin said.
"He sure will." Gaius said, entering the room.
"He will see you for who you are Merlin. Just wait. Your time will come." Gaius said.
Alexia nodded.
"Now come on. Cheer up." Alexia said with a smile.
"How come you are handling this so well?" Merlin asked. Alexia sighed.
"To be honest, I don't know. It's not easy, from exiting a world of technology, which you had from childhood to entering a world of magic, where your head can be chopped off if you are found. But here, I found something, which I never had." Alexia said looking at Gaius and Merlin.
Both smiled at the girl, while she returned it.
"Now since our plan is not working, let's try to do something else." Merlin said.
Alexia sighed.
"What happened?" Merlin asked.
"I tried to change things since the last year, but the events always occured. I don't think we would be able to stop this. Sigan will be released. Merlin has to stop him." Alexia said while Merlin looked shocked.
"How?" He asked.
"I will tell you later." Alexia said.
And the pair returned to their jobs.
As they entered the town, they saw Arthur training with his knights. Cedric following him like a bootlicker.
"Well, what do you think about Arthur?" Alexia asked.
"I think he is a clotpole." Merlin replied. Alexia looked at him surprised and laughed.
"What?" Merlin asked.
"Finally the word has been introduced. I was waiting when will you start calling him that." Alexia said.
Merlin frowned but laughed regardless.
As the evening arrived, Alexia was getting restless. She was in dilemma. It was difficult to decide.
She and Merlin entered Arthur's chambers to see the room empty.
"Arthur!" Alexia called. There was no reply.
"Sire!" Merlin tried but again no reply.
"Where is he?" Merlin asked Alexia who shrugged.
They searched around the room, but when found nothing, they decided to leave the room when Alexia saw some parchment kept on Arthur's desk.
She moved forward and gasped.
Arthur is in darkling woods.
She read out and looked at Merlin who was as shocked as her.
"We have to go." Alexia said and quickly rushed out. Merlin following her.
But unknown to them, Cedric smirked as he saw the pair leaving. He entered the prince's chambers and burnt the parchment in the fire.
Arthur entered the room.
"Cedric?" He asked. The said person turned around.
"Where are Alexia and Merlin?" He asked.
"I saw them leaving sire. Probably they want to spend some time alone." Cedric said.
Arthur frowned.
"They never do that." He said.
"Sire I believe you wish to have a bath?" Cedric asked. Arthur nodded and Cedric bowed and left.
In forests, Alexia and Merlin searched around for Arthur.
"Do you think we must spread out?" Merlin asked.
Alexia thought for a moment before nodding.
They seperated and started searching through the woods. Soon after night arrived.
The surroundings were turning black and Alexia realises something. This was a part of her dream. From the continuous running and searching, her heart was pumping loudly. The dream was coming true. Suddenly, she heard a scream.
"Merlin." She whispered before she broke into run.
In Camelot, in Arthur's chambers, Cedric was doing his last minutes duty.
"I'll be right outside in the anteroom should you need anything." He said.
"That'll be all, Cedric." Arthur said.
"Sleep well, Sire." Cedric said sneaking out the keys.
In forest, Alexia reached Merlin and found that he was in a pit.
"Merlin!" Alexia called shocked.
"I didn't see the trap, it would be for animals." Merlin shrugged.
"Are you fine?" She asked.
"Yes a bit." Merlin said.
Alexia looked at him and then around. She saw nothing which could help her.
"We have to use magic." Alexia said.
"I can do that, but make sure no one is around." Merlin said. Alexia nodded and looked around. When satisfied that no one was there, she signalled Merlin, whose eyes flashed gold and he started floating. He exited the pit and Alexia quickly examined him.
"Nothing serious. We shall leave back. I realise that it was a trick." Alexia said.
"Trick?" Merlin asked.
"Cedric tricked us so that we can remain out of the castle, and he can steal the keys." Alexia said.
Merlin realised and they both broke into run.
In Camelot, Cedric entered Sigan's tomb. He looked around and beamed at the number of jewels and gold.
"Oh, yes. Oh, yes! Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Ha. Hello ladies." He said picking few red jewels and turned to others, while thrusting every possible thing in his bag.
His eyes fell on the blue jewel, encrusted in the Sigan's tomb.
He looked besotted. Moving forward to it, he brought out his dagger and dug it out from the stone. He smiled wickedly and brushed his hand on the jewel. Suddenly, a blue smoke appered from the jewel which floated around Cedric, before entering his body. He dropped the colourless jewel on the ground.
Alexia and Merlin stopped as they reached the citadel, when they felt the power.
"It's done." Alexia whispered horrified.
They quickly ran to Gaius's chambers. Waking the old man.
"Gaius wake up. It happened." Alexia said shaking the man.
"What happened?" Gaius asked, waking up.
"Sigan is free." Merlin said.
Gaius looked at them with grim expression.
In the day, Alexia, Merlin, Arthur and Gaius examined the tomb. Arthur brushed his fingers at the empty space on the stone tomb's heart.
"Sound the warning bell." He said exiting. Merlin and Alexia quickly followed him.
"Merlin! Alexia!" Gaius called from behind. They stopped and turned.
"See this." He showed them the transparent crystal.
"We must keep it. It will be required to recapture his soul." Alexia said recognising the crystal.
Both nodded.
In Arthur's chambers, Merlin and Alexia entered.
"Cedric is possessed by an evil spirit." Merlin said.
"What?" Arthur asked confused.
"He tried to steal the jewel, but it wasn't a jewel, it was a soul of an ancient sorcerer, Sigan." Merlin told him.
"Merlin, have you been on the cider?" Arthur asked.
"Please, listen to me. Camelot is in mortal danger. Sigan is using Cedric's body to take his revenge." Merlin said.
"Merlin, you truly are on the cider. Before blaming Cedric will you please explain, where the hell were you two last night?" Arthur asked annoyed.
"What does this has anything to do with what we are saying?" Alexia asked.
"Just tell me." Arthur said.
"We went to search for you. We found a parchment at your desk which said you were in darkling woods. After reaching there we realised it was a trick of Cedric. He wanted to remove us from his way so he can steal the keys." Alexia told him.
"You know what this is getting ridiculous. Just leave." Arthur said.
"Arthur!"
"Leave!" Arthur yelled again.
"You are truly a clotpole aren't you?" Merlin exclaimed. Alexia smacked her forehead while Arthur glared at them.
"Cedric. Please escort them out." Arthur said angrily and Cedric came out of shadows.
Alexia and Merlin looked at each other Merlin moved to lunge at Cedric. Alexia quickly placed her hand on his arm and quietly shook her head. Merlin seethed but left. Alexia gave Arthur a last look before leaving.
Alexia sighed as they exited the room.
"What shall we do?" Merlin asked.
"I don't know." Alexia replied.
The night arrived. Cedric, possessed by Sigan, was standing on the drawbridge.
He looked around and heaved a breath.
"I am returned." He said, and then he began to chant, "Ic cume eft to Camelot. swá þæt ic mæg min fæhþ awrecan! Nu 'ic lybbe ece and ic mæg rædan min burh!"
The statues of the creatures came to life and started making chaos and attacking everyone. People started screaming and running around.
Gwen was returning from the castle when the creature landed in front of her.
"Ahhh!" Gwen screamed in horror before running back towards the castle.
Merlin and Alexia quickly rushed out after hearing the screams.
Uther, Arthur and few other knights moved towards the council chambers.
"I don't know what this creature is, where it's come from." Uther said.
"There's more than one, Father. We've had several reports. There's panic in the lower town. People are fleeing the city." Arthur told his father.
"Then you must hunt these creatures down and kill them." Uther said.
"Yes, Sire." Arthur bowed and exited.
Gaius quickly entered.
"Have you seen what's happening?" Uther asked Gaius.
"It is as I warned you, Sire." Gaius said.
"This cannot be Sigan." Uther said.
"It is his revenge, he has come back from the dead." Gaius told the king.
"Then he will die again." Uther said turning.
"You do not understand, sire. You cannot kill a man who has conquered mortality." Gaius insisted.
Uther turned back to face Gaius.
"Don't tell me what cannot be done. Camelot will not fall to a sorcerer while I'm King." He said and stalked off while Gaius looked grim.
In the main square, Arthur and his knights prepared to fight one of the creatures, which landed infront of them.
As they attacked, they were defeated quickly.
"Regroup! Low fight!" Arthur commanded and they attacked again.
Merlin and Alexia entered the place where everyone was getting treated.
"We need more bandages, Gwen." Gaius told the girl and turned to Morgana.
"You shouldn't be doing this." He said.
"It's exactly what I should be doing." Morgan said continuing her work.
"You need rest, Morgana." Gaius said.
"And I'm likely to get it with all this going on." Morgana retorted.
Alexia dragged Merlin to a side.
"You have to ask the dragon." Alexia said.
Merlin looked at her shocked.
"No. There must be another way." He said.
"There is none." Alexia said.
"But.." Merlin protested.
"You have to ask the dragon Merlin. Only then everything will be fine." Alexia said.
Merlin looked conflicted.
Meanwhile Arthur continued to fight, but was attacked by the creature as he fell back.
The creature came back to attack but he was dragged away by Gwen.
He quickly stood up.
"Guinevere?" He asked.
"Sire." Gwen said.
"That thing could've killed you." Arthur told the serving girl.
Gwen looked at the approaching creature.
"And it still might!" She said throwing herself on Arthur making him duck. They both landed on the ground with Gwen on top of Arthur.
"Sorry, Sire." Gwen apologized.
"No. My pleasure." Arthur said.
In the wards, Gwen made Arthur sit and examined his wound.
"I'll get you something to stop the bleeding." She said and turned to leave.
"Guinevere. I wanted to say...just, uh...you always surprise me." Arthur said.
"Is that it, Sire?" Gwen asked.
"That's it. Oh, and uh...thank you." He completed.
"Arthur." Uther said horrified seeing his son like that.
"It's nothing." Arthur assured.
"Have we driven the creatures out?" Uther asked.
"They have control of the lower town. The market has been all but destroyed." Arthur reported.
"How many dead?" He asked.
"Too many to number." Arthur replied.
"I'm sealing the citadel." Uther said.
"You can't." Arthur argued.
"I have no choice. I have to protect those who have a chance. If I don't, we will all fall. Where are you going?" Uther said.
"There are people trapped on the drawbridge." Arthur said getting up.
"I forbid you." Uther ordered.
"I'm not leaving them to die." Arthur vowed.
"It's suicide!" Uther told his son.
"It's my duty to Camelot! And to myself!" Arthur said to him.
He exited with the rest of the knights while Alexia and Merlin moved to the dungeons.
As Arthur exited, he saw many dead people.
"Check for survivors." He said but they were attacked by the creature.
"On me! Charge!" Arthur yelled and they fought.
Alexia and Merlin arrived at the cave.
"Hello? Hello? Please, we need your help!" Merlin called.
The great dragon flew down, landing in front of them.
"You told me I would not see you again."
"I'm not here for myself, I'm here for Arthur." Merlin said desperately.
"Arthur's path lies with yours. You have made it clear that you do not walk in step with me." Kilgharrah snapped.
"You cannot want Cornelius Sigan to win. You're not evil." Alexia said.
"At least Sigan knows where his loyalties lie. He has shown that he does not." Kilgharrah stated pointing at Merlin.
"So you will let Camelot fall?" Merlin asked angrily.
"I did not say that." The great dragon denied instantly.
"Then you will help us?" Merlin asked hopefully.
The great dragon looked at the two young magicians.
"To defeat Sigan, you will need a spell more powerful than anything you know."
The dragon informed calmly.
"Please, I have to try." Merlin said.
"Very well. But you must give me something in return." Kilgharrah said.
"What?" Merlin asked, already knowing the answer. Alexia looked at the pair sadly.
"A promise." Kilgharrah said clearly.
"A promise?" Merlin asked.
"That one day you will free me." The dragon said.
"If I release you, what will you do?" Merlin asked.
"That is not your concern." Kilgharrah said.
Merlin looked at Alexia, and who lowered her gaze as she felt his eyes. Merlin looked doubtful.
"I don't trust you!" Merlin exclaimed.
"Nevertheless, you must promise, or Camelot will fall." The great dragon said.
"I promise. Now, please, give me the spell." Merlin said finally. Choosing to save Camelot.
"Close your eyes and open your mind." The great dragon said.
Merlin looked at Alexia asking her to join him. Alexia denied shaking her head slightly.
"It's something you have to do Merlin. I can't.. nor I have power to do this." Alexia said.
Kilgharrah gave her an approving nod. He then turned to the greatest warlock and Alexia stepped back, allowing them space. He then breathed air on Merlin, while Merlin looked dazed at the powerful knowledge he was recieving. After few moments he stopped. Merlin opened his eyes. His eyes glowing bright gold. He turned to see Alexia whose were glowing same. Both were confused but neither said anything.
"Few men have ever been gifted such knowledge. Use it wisely." Kilgharrah said.
"I will." Merlin said and the pair turned to leave.
"You made a promise, young warlock, and one day I shall keep you to it." The great dragon cautioned.
Merlin just looked at him before he turned to leave. Alexia was about to leave too, when she caught eyes of Kilgharrah, which clearly showed that the dragon wanted a talk.
"You go Merlin. I will be coming soon." Alexia said.
Merlin looked confused.
"Go Merlin. Save Arthur." Alexia insisted.
Merlin looked at the witch and then at dragon before he left.
"What is it you want to say?" Alexia asked as she made sure that Merlin left.
"Young witch. You must ensure that Merlin achieves victory. Your souls are connected young witch." The great dragon said.
Alexia gasped.
"How do you know?" Alexia asked.
"You don't know, but you will find out soon. Help the young warlock." The dragon said.
Alexia nodded.
"You truly like him. But you just don't accept." Alexia said.
The great dragon just replied by a snort and took off.
Alexia shook her head with a smile and left.
Meanwhile, On the drawbridge the knights and Arthur were losing. The creature picked a knight and threw him away, killing him. Arthur and the knights stepper back but unfortunately Arthur fell.
"Arthur! Arthur!" One of the knights said, sir Geraint. "Retreat! Regroup in the square!" He yelled as they ran back in the main square. They waited looking at the gates. "Arthur? Arthur? Arthur?" Sir Geraint, shouted.
Arthur entered looking around.
He looked at his knights and carefully stepped forward but the creature landed in between him and knights.
"Save yourselves! That's an order!" Arthur ordered the knights to leave. Swinging his sword at the creature.
"Retreat! Retreat!" Sir Geraint ordered the others and they ran back.
In the temporary ward Sir Geraint entered, "seal the doors!" he ordered loudly.
"Where's Arthur? Where is he? You can't leave him out there, he'll be torn apart!" Uther shouted coming to them.
"You can't go out there, Sire! If you open that door, you will die! We will all die!" the knight said.
"No!" The king shouted.
In the square Merlin ran out to see an unconscious Arthur lying on the ground.
"astrice!" Merlin cried as a creature attacked Arthur, destroying it in the stones.
The creature fell down like rain.
Merlin ran to Arthur.
"Arthur!" Merlin called.
Alexia was running towards the square. She passed the bridge but a creature came to her.
She quickly raised her hand.
"katastréfo!" Alexia cried.
The creature was destroyed and Alexia continued her run. The stones were falling, just like rain.
In square, Cedric came from the smoke.
"Who would've believed it? You, a sorcerer, and a powerful one," Cedric, possessed by sigan, said in a surprised tone.
Merlin looked at him.
"I won't let you hurt him," Merlin stated firmly.
Sigan laughed, "And you're going to stop me?" he questioned disbelievingly. Merlin stood up. Moving towards Sigan.
Alexia reached the square and saw Arthur lying unconscious, and hearing Merlin as he said, "I'll stop you." Alexia ran to them and stood beside Merlin.
"Oh so your friend knows your secret too." Sigan said again amazed.
"It's much more than that." Alexia said.
Merlin glanced at her and she gave a reassuring nod.
They both turned to Sigan, determined.
"He does not deserve your loyalty. He treats you like a slaves," Sigan said.
"That's not true," Merlin snapped. Trying to assure himself.
"He will cast you aside without a moment's thought," Sigan told him.
"That doesn't matter." Merlin said but Alexia saw that it hurted him. She was the one who noticed him since past few days. She was the one who saw him getting hurt.
"But it must hurt so much to be so put upon, so overlooked, when all the while you have such power," Sigan said, tempting Merlin.
"That's the way it has to be." Merlin said stubbornly.
"Does it? You're young, Merlin. Look inside yourself. You have yet to discover your true power. I can help you. Think, Merlin. To have the world appreciate your greatness. To have Arthur know you for what you are." Sigan said.
"That can never be." Merlin denied, his voice a bit shaky.
Alexia looked between them. What shall she do? Sigan is manipulating Merlin. He is playing with his feelings.
"It can, if you join me. Together we can rule over this land. Arthur will tremble at your voice, he will kneel at your feet." Sigan offered.
There was a pause. Alexia looked worried now. She glanced at Merlin, but couldn't find any emotion. It was blank.
"I don't want that." Merlin said angrily.
Alexia smiled and placed her hand on his.
"You'd rather be a servant?" Sigan asked.
"Better to serve a good man that to rule with an evil one." Merlin said firmly. Alexia smiled proudly.
"Your manipulations won't work here Sigan. It's time for you to leave this realm." Alexia said.
Cedric raised his hand and Alexia was thrown back.
"Alexia!" Merlin exclaimed.
Alexia winced a bit laying on the ground.
"So be it. If you will not join me, I will become you and your power will be harnessed to my will." Sigan said. Merlin turned to him. The soul from Cedric's body left and Cedric died gasping. Sigan's soul moved towards Merlin.
Merlin stood firmly on his ground. Alexia looked worried and climbed on her feet.
"Ic þín sáwol hér beléac... abide þæt ic þé álíese!" Merlin chanted. Sigan's soul entered his body.
Alexia looked on with a worried look. Suddenly Merlin fell to the ground.
"Merlin!" Alexia shouted running to his fallen body. Merlin's body started shaking.
Alexia looked at him in panic. Tears in her eyes.
"Merlin! Merlin please respond. Please." Alexia begged, supporting his body and hugging him.
But his body continued to shake in her arms and suddenly his eyes opened and turned black. Alexia gasped.
"Merlin!" Alexia cried shocked, but she continued to wrap her arms around him.
Kilgharrah's voice booming in her head.
"You must ensure that Merlin achieves victory. Your souls are connected young witch."
Alexia continued to hug him while Merlin tried to struggle out of her grip. Suddenly he went limp.
Alexia looked shocked. She glanced at Merlin. His face pale, his eyes closed.
"Merlin!" Alexia whispered, calling him.
His eyes fluttered open and huge wave of relief washed over Alexia. She quickly hugged him crying on his shoulder.
Merlin looked at her, confused. He moved a bit back, sitting upright.
Alexia released him and smacked his arm.
"How could you be so damn stupid? You gave me a heart attack!" Alexia exclaimed.
Merlin looked on confused.
"Heart attack?" He asked.
Alexia shook her head fondly and wrapped her arms around him again.
"Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!" Alexia chanted again and again.
Gaius entered the square, looking for his wards.
"Merlin? Alexia?" He called.
Gaius saw Merlin and Alexia walking out of the mist. As the pair of magicians approached Gaius they smiled and Merlin held up the jewel with Sigan's soul trapped inside.
"Well done, my boy." Gaius praised and hugged him, beaming. Alexia smiled at the pair as they hugged each other.
Merlin looked at Alexia from Gaius's shoulder and they smiled at each other.
The tomb of sigan was then sealed.
After few hours, in the council chambers, Uther and Gaius stood in there.
"We must learn our lessons from these terrible events, Gaius." Uther said.
"Indeed, Sire." Gaius agreed.
"They prove beyond doubt that I was right. Magic is evil. It is our greatest threat. I have grown complacent, Gaius." Uther said. Gaius looked a bit disappointed.
"I wouldn't say that, Sire." Gaius said.
"We must renew our efforts. We must ensure that all sorcerers and their followers are eradicated from this kingdom." Uther said.
"Of course, Sire." Gaius said bowing and leaving.
In Gaius's chambers, Merlin and Alexia sat eating while Gaius poured them their meal.
"You know, you won't get any thanks, Merlin, Alexia." Gaius said looking at his wards.
"I'm not a complete idiot." Merlin said.
"There you go. It's not much, but you deserve something." Gaius said.
The pair shared a look.
"Well what about Arthur?" Alexia asked looking at Merlin.
Before Merlin could answer the door opened and Arthur entered. He looked at the pair and cleared his throat.
"I've come to see Merlin and Alexia." He said looking at them. Who looked at him in return. "I've not forgotten about your lazy, insolent ways, or the fact that you called me a clotpole, but I do have to admit that there was some truth in your accusations against Cedric." Arthur admitted reluctantly.
Alexia rolled her eyes why Merlin looked a bit surprised.
"Does this mean you're admitting that in this occasion I was actually right? That we were right?" Merlin asked surprised with his teasing grin.
"Not exactly, no. It means that I have a knighthood to bestow first thing tomorrow and no one to clean my armour." Arthur said emptying the contents of the sack he carried behind his back. Number of Armour pieces were showered on the table. Alexia and Merlin looked at the table shocked.
"All that?" Merlin and Alexia asked shocked.
"Yep." Arthur said nodding his head with a smug smile before leaving.
As he left, Gaius turned to his wards.
"Clotpole...?" Gaius asked mused, while Merlin and Alexia just shrugged with a grin adorning their faces.
