Beauty and the beast- 1
In a cave in the dark mountains, chanting could be heard in the night sky, as a man brewed a potion while whispering the magical spell and looking at the person sitting there with a hood.
As the potion was complete, the man took out a small bottle before pouring the potion in it. All the while carrying a sinister smirk as his hands shook violently.
Standing up, he moved to the figure and pushed the scraps of torn clothes away and looked at the figure.
"Mistress." The man called.
The figure slid it's hood to reveal a hideous troll.
"Is it done?" The troll asked, her voice cracking.
"Yes, Mistress, the potion is prepared." The man replied passing the bottle.
"Then Camelot and all its riches will soon be mine." The troll snarled as she took it and drank the potion.
The man looked warily at the troll as she screamed loudly as if in pain, before slumping forward panting.
The man took the bottle from her human hand.
Next morning, the pair could be seen riding through the woods as they came to a stop looking forward. Infront of them were the large palace of Camelot.
"Camelot." The man told as the woman removed her hood, revealing a beautiful woman, who smirked looking infront of her.
Gaius and Merlin could be seen walking through the lower towns as Merlin was loaded with pots.
"Keep up, Merlin. We've got a busy day ahead." Gaius said, motivating him.
"It's a busy day every day. You and Arthur, you work me to the bone." Merlin groaned.
"Do stop moaning. At least the work's interesting." Gaius retorted.
"Gaius, we're collecting pots. We do the same thing each and every Thursday at exactly the same time and nothing interesting ever happens." Merlin retorted back when suddenly the man came and grabbed his arm.
"Please, we seek Uther Pendragon. Where can he be found?" The man asked.
"I..." Merlin stuttered.
The man pressed a royal seal in his hand.
"We have urgent business with the King." The man pressed as he looked at Merlin.
"I'm sorry, any business you have with the King will have to be pursued through the usual channels." Gaius interrupted before he looked at the seal.
"But this is the seal of the House of Tregor. Where did you get this?" Gaius asked.
"It does not belong to me." The man said and turned to the troll who pulled back her hood.
"It belongs to me." The troll, who now was looking like Catrina spoke up. Gaius looked at her before he bowed.
"My Lady."
Merlin stared at the woman in confusion. Gaius continued to bow before he whispered. "Merlin!" Making the said siad boy bow in the presence of the lady.
In the king's palace, Uther and Morgana sat on their respective thrones as Arthur stood beside his father, with Gwen standing beside Morgana. Uther stood up as he saw Catrina entering.
"Lady Catrina, is it really you?" He asked looking at her.
"I can hardly believe it myself." Catrina replied with a bow.
"We had tidings from the north that the House of Tregor had fallen to invaders." Uther expressed his grief.
"All that you heard was true, My Lord, and worse." Catrina said with a dejected look in her eyes.
"Your father, the King?" Uther asked concerned, as he stepped forward.
"Gone, Sire. The enemy attacked without warning. We were outnumbered five to one. He could not endure. I would never have survived had it not been for my faithful servant Jonas. But we did survive, and we have made it this far..." Catrina said before she swooned, stumbling as Uther catched her and Arthur rushed forward and Morgana stood up with a jerk.
"Forgive me, My Lord. I fear my trials have taken a toll." Catrina apologized, blinking her eyes tiredly.
"Your sufferings are beyond imagining, My Lady. It would be an honour to help you in any way we can." Uther offered.
"A bed for the night would be most welcome." Catrina requested.
"And consider yourselves our esteemed guests. It's the least we can do." Uther agreed.
"Thank you." Catrina thanked.
Gaius and Merlin were walking down a corridor as they talked while Gaius seemed to be lost somewhere.
"She's very brave." Merlin commented.
"Yes." Gaius agreed.
"It's just terrible what she's been through." Merlin said.
"Terrible, indeed." Gaius replied.
"What's wrong?" Merlin asked looking at him.
"Nothing..." Gaius replied.
Before Merlin could ask, Arthur came from behind.
"Merlin! Job for you." He said before motioning Merlin to follow him. Merlin turned to leave before looking at Gaius.
"Work, work, work." Merlin said mkhing backward before leaving with Arthur.
While Gaius looked deep in his thoughts.
Merlin entered the guest quarters as Catrina and Jones followed him to Catrina's guest chambers.
"I'm sorry it's not quite what you're used to." He said looking around.
Catrina entered with Jones and looked around before looking at Merlin.
"Forgive me, but I didn't get your name." Catrina asked.
"Merlin." Merlin replied.
"Well, Merlin, considering we spend last night in a cave, this will do very nicely. Thank you." Catrina said and Merlin smiled at her
"Well, if you need anything, just ask. My master's chambers are only upstairs." Merlin offered.
"My mistress and I could not be more grateful for the kindness you've shown us." Jones said.
"You're welcome." Merlin said as he left smiling.
As soon as he left, the smile fell off Catrina's face as she snarled.
"Well I can't sleep here. This whole place stinks of cleanliness." She snorted.
"Do not worry, Mistress. I will find you somewhere more suitable." Jones said looking at the pillow in his hands.
Catrina looked at the fruits kept infront of her as she breathed on them. The fruits rotted and Catrina started gobbling up the rotten food as worms wormed all over the food.
Alexia entered Gaius's chambers as she kept her bag aside before sighing and slumping on the table.
"Alexia." Gaius said as he entered the chambers and moved to her.
"You came back." He said as he stroked her head.
Alexia closed her eyes as she hummed in relief.
"Finally." She mumbled.
"You are the best Gaius." She said smiling as she looked up at him.
Gaius smiled back before sitting beside her.
"How was the check-ups?" Gaius asked.
"I can't imagine how you do this. Like, there were so many patients. But yeah, it was fine. I was able to treat them fine." She said smiling.
"I am glad you liked it. And I am happy Arthur decided to give you break for today. You were tired after yesterday." He said and she laughed.
"Can you imagine? He made me do all the work yesterday! And Merlin had to spend all the day with horses. Seriously, I can't believe that his tantrums are totally unannounced." Alexia said as she laughed before she noticed his expressions.
"Gaius? Is something wrong?" Alexia asked.
Gaius shook his head.
"Nothing dear. I believe Merlin will be back soon." Gaius said assuring as he moved to one of his books. Alexia looked a bit confused before she shrugged.
Uther, Arthur and Morgana sat there with Catrina having dinner.
"Well, this is wonderful. Thank you." Catrina thanked the maid who served her.
"It's an honour. The Houses of Tregor and Pendragon have been allies for as...well, as long as anyone can remember." Uther said.
"My father often spoke of you, My Lord." Catrina agreed.
"And I will remember him always." Uther said raising his goblet.
"I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to meet him." Arthur said looking at the pair.
"I'm sorry too. For the House of Tregor is no more." Catrina said pushing the plate.
"Well, no, Catrina, it lives on in you." Uther said.
"I only wish that were true." Catrina replied with sadness.
"It is, My Lady. Your courage, your modesty. And you are as you always were, ever since you were a child." Uther pressed while Arthur looked at the pair with a surprised look on his face.
"Ah, I fear I am much changed since then, my Lord." Catrina said with a light laugh.
"Oh, yes, it's true. You are far more beautiful now." Uther said looking at her.
Morgana smiled at that while Arthur looked completely appalled.
He faked a yawn as Catrina looked at him.
"I'm sorry, hard day's training. If you'll excuse me." Arthur said with fake regret as he stood up to leave.
"Of course." Catrina said as he left. "Arthur." Uther nodded as a farewell to his son. Few seconds later, Morgana too stood up.
"I should retire myself." Morgana said standing up with a smile.
"Morgana." Uther nodded at her as she left.
He turned to Catrina.
"Can I get you anything else? You've hardly touched your food." Uther asked looking at her.
"I'm sorry, I find I have little appetite ever since that day." Catrina apologized.
"I wish I'd been there for you." Uther said. Catrina placed her hand upon his.
"Oh, but you're helping me now. Your kindness, your companionship." She said as she looked at him. The pair stared at each other before Catrina stood up.
"I must also bid you goodnight, My Lord. It's been a long day." She said.
"Of course. Goodnight, My Lady." Uther wished and Catrina placed her lips on the back of Uther's hand before she left smirking.
In Gaius's chambers, Gaius was making a potion, while Alexia was sitting at the table having food.
"Hey Gaius, what are you doing?" Alexia asked.
"I..." Gaius was about to speak but was interrupted when the door creaked open and Merlin entered.
"Alexia!" Merlin called smiling brightly before he moved to her and hugged her. Alexia returned the hug with a smile.
"How was your day?" He asked.
"Brilliant!" Alexia replied.
"How was yours?" She asked as she picked her goblet to have a drink.
"Well we have a new guest here, and you know what? She is such a strong lady, like her home was destroyed and she still was so strong. Her name is lady Catrina." Merlin said making Alexia spit her water.
Merlin and Gaius looked at her shocked.
"What?" Alexia asked with a shocked look.
"What?" Merlin asked in return.
"Uh.. nothing. Sorry." Alexia said as she returned to her food. Her mind already thinking about what was happening.
Merlin shrugged and turned to Gaius.
"There's something really different about the Lady Catrina." Merlin said.
"Oh?" Gaius asked as he made the potion.
"Most of Uther's guests just treat me like I'm dirt in their shoes, but she was really nice, even after all she's been through." Merlin said with a smile. While Alexia was looking at the scene closely. This was far too familiar than she was going to like.
"Yes. She always was very gracious."
"You've met her before?" Merlin asked.
"Oh, it was many years ago. I doubt that she would remember. Now, Merlin, I've got a job for you." Gaius replied.
"Does it ever end?" Merlin asked with a slight smile.
"Give this to the Lady Catrina with my compliments." Gaius instructed ignoring the question.
"What is it?" Merlin asked looking at the bottle. Alexia too was looking at the bottle.
"She'll know what it is." Gaius replied simply.
"But what is it?" Merlin asked again. Gaius glared at him.
"Okay, okay." He said defeated as he turned to leave. He gave Alexia a smile and she returned before he left.
Alexia thought for a few seconds before she stood up looking at Gaius.
"You doubt her Gaius. Don't you?" Alexia asked as Gaius stopped his work to look at her.
"I don't know what you are talking about." Gaius said as moved back to his herbs.
Alexia laughed at the answer.
"You are seriously trying to lie to someone who knows your entire future ahead? Wow!" Alexia teased and Gaius sighed before sitting down.
"She isn't lady Catrina is she?" Gaius asked and Alexia shook her head. A small smile playing on her lips.
"Who is she?" Gaius asked with a frown.
"Well, the right question would be, what is she?" Alexia said as she sat back on her table before finishing her food while Gaius looked grave.
Lady Catrina entered her guest room.as she slumped into her troll hunch.
"What's that?" She asked as she looked at tray kept infront of her filled with fruits.
She sat down on the chair looking at the fruits.
"Compliments of the King." Jones said looking at her.
"Revolting." Catrina snarled as she breathed on the fruits making them rotten.
"Uther's so stupid, so blinded by pretty things. Already he falls for me. I can see it in his eyes. It's only a matter of time before he is completely under my control." Catrina snarled as she gobbled up the food.
"Excellent." Jones said with a slight smirk.
Merlin knocked on the door and entered the room as Catrina quickly stood up wiping her face.
"Jonas, you must take these back to the kitchens, it's, er, it's perfectly rotten." Catrina said as she continued to clean her face.
"I-I'm sorry. I did not mean to intrude." Merlin apologized looking at her.
"That's, er, that's quite alright. At least I wasn't undressing." Catrina said with a slight smile. Merlin went a bit red.
"Er, the court physician asked me to give you this." He said extending the medicine to her.
"What is it?" Jones asked as he stepped in between them and snatching the bottle.
"Er, Gaius prepared it for you." Merlin said as he looked at Jones who was opening the bottle and sniffing it.
"I am terribly sorry, there must be some mistake. I requested no medicine." Catrina said as Jones gave the medicine back to Merlin. Merlin looked confused at that.
"Oh. Oh. Are you sure?" Merlin asked.
"Quite sure, thank you. I am in perfect health." Catrina said as he motioned at herself.
Merlin slammed the bottle on the table in front of Gaius.
"She didn't ask for it. She didn't need it. She didn't even want it." Merlin said looking at Gaius exasperated. Alexia looked up from her book looking at the pair.
"Interesting." Gaius said sharing a look with Alexia.
"If you say so." Merlin mumbled as he noticed the exchange between the pair. Gaius looked back at Merlin.
"When I treated her as a child, it was for an incurable disease. Catrina had a rare bone disorder affecting her joints. She often had difficulty walking, especially after a long ride. My tonic was the only thing that brought her relief." Gaius told him as Merlin finally realised something.
"She walks as well as you or I." Merlin said with a frown.
"So I noticed." Gaius agreed.
"So...the tonic was some kind of test?" Merlin asked confirming his suspicion.
"Indeed. And Alexia confirmed my doubts." Gaius said looking at Alexia who closed her book and moved to them.
"I don't exactly remember the incidents. But yeah, she is going to be a problem for Merlin." Alexia said looking at them.
"But what exactly is she?" Merlin asked and Alexia suppressed her laugh.
"A troll." Alexia replied as she saw Merlin's and Gaius's eyes widening.
Next morning, Uther and Catrina could be seen in the square as they prepared for the ride.
"What a charming idea this is, Uther." Catrina praised.
"Yes." Uther agreed. "A ride before breakfast always gives me a healthy appetite. I've had the kitchens prepare something special."
Catrina looked at the basket of food as a revolted look crossed her face. Forcing a smile, she turned to Uther.
"Oh, how sweet of you." She said.
Merlin and Alexia walked down the corridor watching Catrina and Uther leave. The pair then entered Catrina's guest room cautiously only to cough at the horrible smell spread out all around the room. Merlin kept the basket on the bed as he turned to open the door of a small cupboard only to find it empty. Alexia moved around the bed as she tried to find anything which could help them. The pair shook their head at each other as they expressed their disappointment. Suddenly they heard a voice.
"Can I help you?"
Both looked startled as they raised their heads to find Jonas standing there looking at them.
"No. Er, I- we- we were just changing the sheets." Merlin stuttered as he lied.
Alexia looked at the man as if trying to remember what all he did. She was seriously blaming her memory as she tried to remember his doings. The said man, as if sensing her gaze, quickly turned to look at her.
"And who is this lady?" Jonas asked as he stared at Alexia.
"I am Alexia. His friend and helper. And if you will allow us, we would like to finish our work and leave as soon as possible." Alexia replied with a fake smile as she answered the man.
"Please, go ahead. Don't let me get in your way." Jonas said as he stepped forward. Merlin nodded and Alexia quickly settled the sheets.
"All done. Thank you." Merlin said as he and Alexia turned to leave.
"Merlin. Aren't you forgetting something?" Jonas asked as he looked at the pair who was giving him blank looks.
Jonas turned around to pick up the basket and Merlin and Alexia caught a glimpse of a green forked tail. Alexia suppressed her gasp as Merlin looked surprised. Jonas turned back as he extended the basket of laundry to Merlin who quickly held it as the magical pair rushed out of the chambers.
Merlin and Alexia swiftly entered the chambers of Gaius and rushed to the said man. Gaius quickly dropped his work as he turned to Merlin and Alexia.
"What did you find?" Gaius asked and Merlin and Alexia looked at each other.
"Something wasn't right in there. There was that strange smell like everything was rotten. And even the beds seemed to be unslept upon. Not only this but we saw something else too." Merlin ranted as he paced around the room, stopping at the end. Alexia looked at him and Gaius noticed the exchange.
"Oh?" Gaius asked as he indicated Merlin to continue.
"Jonas. As we were leaving we saw something, which will eerily sound stupid, but it was there. A tail. Jonas had a green forked tail. Well I remembered that little detail, but I am not sure about what creature he is, because he definitely, isn't a human." Alexia told them.
"Then I believe we must keep an eye on her. A very close eye." Gaius said and merlin and alexia nodded.
In the woods, Uther and Catrina sat near a riverside as they enjoyed a picnic.
"How wonderful it is to sit here with you, Uther. It is a terrible thing to find oneself alone in the world, suddenly, cruelly alone." Catrina said as she looked at a far away sight. Her face conveying a deep thought.
"When Ygraine died, I feared I'd never recover." Uther said as he looked away. Catrina tossed her food into the river as she saw Uther distracted. "But then as time passed, I've become used to being alone."
"But you have Morgana and Arthur. Surely they are a comfort to you?" Catrina asked as she looked at him with a frown.
"They are. Of course they are, both of them." Uther answered quickly as Catrina looked away.
"It must be hard to be king and father both. To shoulder all that responsibility all by yourself. But I feel sure, My Lord, that you and I shall not remain alone forever. We will find love anew. A kindred spirit to share the burden of this life." Catrina said as she leaned a bit forward to Uther.
"I believe we will." Uther agreed.
In the town square, Uther helped Catrina down from her horse and they giggled. Arthur, Merlin and Alexia looked on while grooming a horse.
"Honestly. Look at them." Arthur said motioning at the couple as he glanced at Merlin and Alexia.
"Are you alright?" Uther asked as he escorted her inside.
"Don't you think it's odd how quickly they've become close?" Merlin asked, raising his suspicion.
"There's nothing odd about that. My father's a wealthy and powerful man." Arthur replied leaving.
"Maybe that was enough to attract a troll to Camelot." Alexia mumbled as she nuzzled the horse.
At night, Gaius met Uther in a corridor.
"Good evening, Sire." Gaius greeted.
"A very good evening to you, Gaius." Uther greeted cheerfully.
"You seem in very high spirits."
"I am, I am."
"The Lady Catrina, she has struck a chord with you." Gaius said as he tried to start the topic.
"Catrina is a remarkable woman." Uther said shaking his head as if fondly.
"That she is, Sire. You may remember I treated her as a child. Such courage in the face of her condition." Gaius said with a sympathetic face.
"Condition? What are you talking about?" Uther asked frowning.
"Oh, I thought you knew, Sire. I diagnosed Catrina with an incurable bone disease." Gaius told the king.
"Well, evidently you were wrong. There's nothing the matter with her now." Uther said, moving past him.
"It has been a miraculous recovery, I must say." Gaius said, planting his doubts.
"I'm sorry, Gaius. What are you suggesting?" Uther asked turning to look at the said man.
"Oh, I'm not suggesting anything, Sire. It's just a little strange, that's all." Gaius shrugged as he turned to face the king.
"The only thing I see as strange is that you won't admit that you were wrong." Uther said.
"Sire, this is not about me. It's about the Lady Catrina." Gaius tried.
"The Lady Catrina is our honoured guest, and you will show her the respect that she deserves." Uther commanded as he left.
Catrina and Uther were sitting by fire as they sat there relaxed on some pillows.
"Is there something on your mind, My Lord?" Catrina asked as she saw the king in deep thoughts.
"No, it's nothing." Uther said shrugging the matter but his face clearly said otherwise.
"Speak, My Lord." Catrina urged as she leaned towards him.
"Is it true that, as a child, you suffered from an interminable illness?" Uther asked.
"Who told you that?" Catrina asked in return, surprise written on her face.
"Gaius, the court physician. He said he treated you for it." Uther replied. Catrina paused for few seconds before she replied.
"Yes, My Lord. What he says is true. But, as you see, I suffer no more." Catrina told the king.
"And for that you must be eternally grateful. After all, Gaius thought your condition was incurable, did he not?" Uther said.
"Well, fortunately for us, physicians are often mistaken. Even your famous Gaius." Catrina replied.
"It is unusual, though, for such a serious illness to cure itself. Almost a miracle." Uther said taking a sip of his glass.
"I can neither deny it, nor explain it, but miracles do happen. After all, is it not a miracle that we should have found each other again after all this time?" Catrina asked as Uther nodded. "And my good fortune continues. For you are a remarkable man, Uther Pendragon. You are brave, but compassionate. You are powerful, but modest. And most of all, you are very, very handsome." Catrina whispered as she leaned in trying to kiss Uther.
"I'm sorry." Uther apologised quickly as he jerked his head away making Catrina stumble.
"No, no, no, My Lord. It is I who must apologise." Catrina rushed.
"It's a long time since Ygraine...since anyone..." Uther tried to explain.
"I-I understand completely. There's no hurry. We have all the time in the world." Catrina fumbled.
"And the time will come, I assure you." Uther promised.
Catrina exited Uther's chambers as she stormed to the tray of fruits, before tossing them in anger. She covered her face with a hood as she left the place. Merlin and Alexia came out of their hiding place as they see her retreating figure, before they turned to follow her. The lady Catrina exits the palace, crossing the square as the magical pair rushed behind her to keep up. They followed the troll to the tunnels under the castle. Merlin and Alexia reach a fork as they try to determine the way which Catrina followed. Suddenly, they heard a groan from their left. Merlin and Alexia turned around swiftly a they looked on in the tunnel.
The pair moved to the sound, as they started smelling the stink. Both coughed and covered their mouths to suppress the noise. They reach an alcove and a surprised look crosses their faces as they saw a hideous troll lying on the floor in Catrina's dress. The troll lied there as she moved a bit, getting comfortable before she farted. Alexia looked at her in horror as she covered her nose. Merlin found himself unable to breathe as he grabbed Alexia before dragging her out.
They left the place but unfortunately, Jonas saw them leaving.
In Gaius's chambers, Merlin, Alexia and Gaius could be seen sitting in a circle.
"What you saw is seldom seen, Merlin, Alexia. Trolls despise all other living things, especially humans. They prefer to lurk in the darkness of their nests, feasting on rotten filth." Gaius told the pair.
"And Jonas? Is he a troll too?" Merlin asked.
"Who can tell what manner of creature he is." Gaius replied.
"It makes no sense. If trolls like to lurk in their caves so much, what's this one doing in Camelot?" Merlin asked.
"Trolls are greedy. Lady Catrina's like the rest of her kind; she lusts after wealth and power." Gaius explained and Alexia nodded. "Uther's wealth and power." She mumbled.
"We've reached the point of no return. Uther has to be told." Gaius said as he stood up.
"You're going to tell Uther that his new lady friend's a troll?" Merlin asked shocked and Alexia carried the same expression.
"That's exactly what I'm going to do." Gaius said. Alexia was about to stop him when Merlin held her wrist stopping her.
"Good luck." Merlin wished.
"Thank you, Merlin." Gaius said leaving. Alexia glared at Merlin.
"You are perfectly aware the plan won't work." Alexia said looking at him while Merlin just gave a shrug.
Uther stood their standing at the window watching Catrina. Gaius reached him.
"My Lord." Gaius bowed.
"Yes, Gaius?" Uther asked without distracting his gaze.
"I have served you for many years now. I like to think that, in my humble capacity, I've advised you to the best of my ability, and that my advice has proven to of value to you." Gaius started.
"Yes, this is true." Uther agreed.
"And so I must advise you that the Lady Catrina is not all that she seems to be." Gaius said, getting to the point.
"Well then tell me, Gaius, who is she?" Uther asked.
"I believe her to be...she is...she's..." Gaius stuttered as he tried to form words.
"Oh, come on. Out with it." Uther said turning to him.
"She is a troll, Sire." Gaius finally confessed.
"Excuse me?" Uther asked completely baffled.
"Some trolls have the power to take any shape they please. This one has taken a shape that pleases you. You are besotted, My Lord. The creature has you in its power." Gaius said and Uther scoffed at his words.
"Gaius, this is a little ludicrous." Uther said.
"Please, Sire, her entire family is wiped out, but she alone escapes? She has an incurable disease, but makes a miraculous recovery?" Gaius asked pointing the odds.
"And that is nothing but idle gossip." Uther reasoned.
"And is it gossip she does not eat her food? Of course she doesn't. She feasts off rotten fruit like any other troll." Gaius retorted.
"Enough. This attack is unwarranted and malicious." Uther stopped the physician.
"Sire, her servant is not human. He has a tail." Gaius tried.
"I said enough!" Uther spoke again.
"Sire, please, I just advise you not to do anything rash." Gaius advised.
"And I advise you to hold your tongue, physician, or I will indeed do something rash." Uther warned.
In the guest chambers, Catrina entered the room as Jonas awaited the troll.
"Did you sleep well last night, Mistress?" Jonas asked.
"Very well, thank you." Catrina replied.
"We have a problem. Last night you were followed." Jonas said as he removed her cloak.
"Who?" Catrina asked.
"The boy, Merlin and his friend." Jonas stated.
"Merlin." Catrina snarled.
"Shall I dispose of them, Mistress?" Jonas asked.
"No, no, no. That may arouse suspicion. No. But it is time that Uther bent to my wishes." The troll said as she thought about her future plans.
"And if he does not?" Jonas asked, pointing out the possibility.
"Well, he'll have no choice. There's more than one way to enchant a man." Catrina snarled looking at him as she gave a sinister laugh.
Merlin and Alexia stood near the counter as Merlin grinded the herbs Alexia thought about something.
"I don't know why am I not able to remember anything about this incident. It's like faded." Alexia said with a frown. Merlin looked at her.
"You cannot possibly know everything and remember every incident." Merlin pointed.
Alexia nodded but she still had some suspicions.
"Yeah, but I was never the one with bad memory. Forgetting the little details, maybe yes, but what actually happened? No. I don't know why but I feel like something bad is going to happen soon." Alexia said, raising her worries.
Merlin looked at her.
"Like in this case?" Merlin asked. But Alexia shook her head.
"It's like it much more than just this troll." Alexia whispered as she slipped into her trance. What was going on? Since the time of the blip in her powers, she was feeling that something was off. Yeah she got her powers back the next day, but why did she lost them in the first place? And what about the warning Kilgharrah gave her. Was it real or just some hallucination? Alexia could just hope for the best.
Before she could think about it further, the door opened and Gaius came in looking dejected.
Merlin and Alexia looked at him as he moved inside. Gaius looked at the pair before he raised his hand, motioning them to stop.
"Please don't say anything, Merlin."
Merlin suppressed a smile.
"I wasn't going to say anything." He retorted while Alexia gave a snort at those words.
"You were going to say, 'I told you so.'" Gaius said as he moved to take his seat.
"OK. I was. But I...I'm not going to now." Merlin said raising his hands in defence as he tried to stop the smile which was coming on his face.
Alexia cleared her throat diverting the attention.
"How did it went Gaius?" Alexia asked kindly, seeing the tired expression on the physician's face.
"Uther didn't take to it well." Gaius finally confessed.
Merlin groaned
"Augh, you see? I told you..." Alexia smacked her arm stopping him mid sentence. "Sorry." He said looking sheepish.
"But I know him. He's a proud man, but he's not stupid. He will reflect on what I said, I'm sure he will." Gaius defended, sounding a bit uncertain. Alexia sighed softly thinking it was not what would happen. She could remember them getting married. But how did Merlin stop the troll?
"Let's hope you're right." Merlin said bringing her back. Alexia looked at him before she gave a nod agreeing.
"Let's hope." She repeated in whispers.
At night, Catrina and Jonas were sitting in the guest room as Jonas held a pendant in his hand while Catrina was looking at it with glee.
" Ic nemne þá grædige, yfele, formolsnung. mé getryme. Nu meaht þú begalan. Nu meaht þú begalan. " Catrina hissed while taking out a pin and pricking her finger, allowing her dark green blood to flow from her finger and falling on the necklace. The necklace glowed and the pair looked at each other with menacing smirks.
"Dinner time." Catrina growled as she and Jonas cackled like maniacs.
Uther and Catrina were sitting at the dinning table as they dined together.
"Isn't this perfect? You and me together. A toast. A toast to us." Catrina said raising her chalice.
"I'm not sure everyone sees it that way." Uther said, looking grave.
"Well, there will always be those who resist change. That's to be expected." Catrina said shrugging his worries.
"We must be mindful of public opinion." Uther reasoned.
"What are you trying to say, My Lord?" Catrina asked placing the chalice aside.
"Perhaps if you were to visit your cousins for a while to show people that we're not rushing into anything." Uther offered.
"You would let yourself be bullied by some petty minded fools?" Catrina slammed her hand on the table before she gave a slight smile and laugh. "But of course, of course, My Lord. If that is what you wish, then that is what I shall do."
"It is as you said, we have all the time in the world." Uther agreed.
"Before I go, My Lord, there's something I want to give you. It belonged to my father, and his father before him." Catrina said as she removed the enchanted necklace from her neck.
"Catrina, I couldn't possibly..."
"No, no, no, My Lord. I want you to have it. Perhaps when you look at it, it will remind you of me..." Catrina suggested as she put the necklace around his neck. The stone glowed red, indicating the spell. "And of the times that we have spent together." She completed before she closed the distance between them as their foreheads touched each other's.
"I shall wear it always." Uther gave his word.
"That is as well, My Lord. For while others doubt me, you must not. You cannot doubt me. For am I not beautiful, My Lord?" Catrina said leaning in.
"You are beautiful." Uther agreed, completely enchanted.
"Am I not your heart's desire?" Catrina leaned a bit more.
"You are my heart's desire." Uther said standing up.
"Then seal it, My Lord. Seal it with a kiss." Catrina said looking at the king.
"Yes. A kiss." Uther agreed wholeheartedly as he leaned in before they kissed.
Catrina moved her hand to the back of Uther's neck as it was revealed to be in it's troll form.
As the morning arrived, Jonas went under the castle entering the tunnels to the trolls hideout. The troll was eating the rotten fruits while seating on the wilted heap.
"Good morning, Mistress." Jonas greeted.
"It is, indeed, Jonas." The troll said as she continued to munch upon her food.
"The King was receptive to your advances." Jonas siad which appeared more like a question.
"How could he resist such beauty?" The troll scoffed throwing her food and motioning towards herself.
"The enchantment proved affective, then?" Jonas asked.
"Ah, he is but a puppet in my hands." Catrina snarled as they both laughed.
In the council chamber, Uther stood near the window as Gaius approached him.
"You called for me, Sire?" Gaius asked moving towards him.
"Ah, Gaius. You'll be delighted to hear that none of the worries you brought to my attention have any truth to them whatsoever." Uther told the physician in delight.
"Sire?"
"I hope over time you will come to see Lady Catrina as she really is." Uther smiled at the man.
"Over time?" Gaius asked, completely baffled.
"I have asked Catrina to extend her stay indefinitely." Uther said with a smile on his face.
"But..."
"I consider the matter closed, and I hope you show me the courtesy of doing the same."
Gaius bowed before he left the chambers.
Gaius stood in his chambers while Merlin and Alexia were leaned back to the counter, listening to him.
"It's no good, Merlin. I can tell him she's a troll until I'm blue in the face, he simply won't listen. He sees a charming, beautiful woman." Gaius said, sounding defeated.
"Yeah, with a body like a tree trunk." Merlin said.
"But we only know that because you both saw her in the troll form." Gaius reasoned.
"So, what do we do?" Alexia asked.
"We must open Uther's eyes, show her for what she really is." Gaius replied moving to lean beside the pair.
"Using magic?" Merlin asked while looking at Alexia who looked back at him.
"It's the only way to reveal her true form." Gaius nodded.
"But she never leaves his side." Alexia said with a frown.
"I know." Gaius said and realisation dawned upon their faces.
"You want us to use magic in front of the King?" Merlin asked shocked.
"Yes, Merlin, I do." Gaius replied with blank expression.
"And we get caught? I don't know if we are trying to end Catrina or ourselves." Alexia mumbled as she left the counter moving forward.
"I'm sorry. I know how dangerous this is, but we cannot allow it to gain any further control over the King. Who knows what the consequences might be?" Gaius asked.
"Just one problem. We know nothing about troll magic." Merlin pointed.
Gaius went to the shelf and slammed few books on thr table.
"Then we have work to do."
Uther looked at the city from the bridge and Catrina joined him.
"A beautiful day." Catrina smiled drawing the attention of the king towards her.
"The first of many, I hope." Uther siad placing a kiss on her cheek.
"How fine it must be to have all of this at your command." Catrina said, her eyes shining with greed.
"It can be a burden sometimes." Uther sighed.
Catrina looked at him. "Well, let me share your burden, My Lord. Together we could achieve so much."
"You know there's nothing I'd love more." Uther said smiling at her.
"Oh, and My Lord..." Catrina addressed.
"Hmm?"
"Would it not be a good idea send a message to those who doubt us? To show all of Camelot the strength of our love, our commitment?" Catrina asked looking at him.
"Yes. What did you have in mind?" Uther asked.
"Well, I was thinking of something traditional. Something permanent." She said with a smile, before placing her lips upon Uther's.
In the physician's chambers, Gaius slept on the book, tired from the research, while Merlin and Alexia were searching for the other books, both looking tired and disheveled.
Suddenly Merlin's eyes widened before he slammed his hand on the book, jerking Gaius awake and making Alexia jump.
"Here. The spell of revelation. By which the true nature of the thing may be revealed." He said standing up and moving to Gaius, Alexia following him quickly. Gaius read the spell before he pointed out.
"But this applies only to objects, things, not to living creatures."
"I know. The principle's the same, isn't it? We have to try it. What other choice do we have?" Merlin asked looking at Alexia who was reading the spell.
"Very well. But Merlin, Alexia, choose your moment carefully. Trolls are vicious creatures." Gaius warned.
The pair nodded as they heard a sharp knock on the door.
"Come in."
A gaurd entered.
"The King requests your presence in the council chambers." He said and the trio shared a look with each other.
In the council chambers, the doors openned and Uther entered with Catrina on his arm. The couriers moved aside giving way to the king as they bowed as the couple passed. Morgana and Gwen looked at the scene with a bit confusion.
Uther and Catrina stepped near the throne and turned to the audience.
"Thank you all for coming. You are, no doubt, wondering why I have gathered you here today. Though we live in dark times, today I bring you light, and love. " Gwen and Morgana shared an amused look at that. "It gives me greatest pleasure to inform you that the Houses of Tregor and Pendragon are to be united in the closest bond of all. I am to marry Lady Catrina of Tregor." Uther announces as everyone started to clap while Merlin, Alexia and Gaius straightened up. Morgana and Gwen looked surprised while Arthur was shocked. Caterina whispered something in his ears as Uther turned back to the crowd.
"I am to marry Lady Catrina tomorrow." He announced recieving another round of applause. This time Arthur joined it too while Gaius motioned Merlin and Alexia. The magical pair nodded and stepped back to hid behind a pillar. "This union heralds a new dawn for the kingdom, a new beginning..." Uther trailed off as Merlin and Alexia whispered the spell.
" Hierste þæt íecen sóna. " Catrina felt something shuffling in her skin. Jonas noted it as he quickly turned to look around, spotting Merlin and Alexia.
"...and a new queen for all here in Camelot."
" Hierste þæt íecen sóna. " The pair whispered again as their eyes flashed gold. The shuffling increased as Catrina grew uncomfortable.
"I could not hope to have made a better match."
" Hierste þæt íecen sóna. " Merlin and Alexia chanted again, this time Catrina released a gasp. She could feel something changing as a huge boil appeared on her arm, which she quickly but subtly covered with her clothes. Suddenly both Alexia and Merlin panted as if their energy was diminishing.
"I hope you will all share in our joy." Everyone applauded at Uther's words.
"Thank you." He said as Catrina, subtly, pulled him outside.
In the guests chambers, Jonas and Catrina rushed inside, with Catrina with her troll hunchback.
"What happened?" She asked as she coughed violently.
"I'm sorry, Mistress. I was not prepared." He saif moving to the table and picking up the bottle.
"Quickly, my potion." Catrina said motioning her hand.
"It was that pair, Merlin and his friend. It seems they have magic." Jonas told the troll who gulped down her potion.
"Do not concern yourself. I resisted him easily enough." The troll said, still panting hard.
"But there's no telling what he'll do next! He could ruin everything!" Jonas yelled.
"That cannot be allowed to happen!" The troll snarled glaring at him.
"What would you have me do, Mistress?" Jonas asked.
"There is something about that girl, something that I am not aware about. I think it's time we set a trap."
Gaius, Merlin and Alexia enter in Gaius's chambers.
"I'm sorry. We tried. We gave it everything we had." Merlin said looking at Gaius.
"It's not your fault, Merlin. You did your best." Gaius assured. Alexia looked deep in thoughts.
"The spell of revelation is powerful magic. And she could feel it, I could see she could feel it." Merlin said as he tried to explain.
"Her magic must be strong, indeed, to be able to resist you both." Gaius observed.
"No. No she couldn't have." Alexia murmured. Merlin and Gaius looked at her.
"What?"
"What I am saying is she just didn't resist our magic, because if we would have tried a bit more, she would be revealed. But the third time, it felt like... It felt like something sucked our energy. Like she countered a spell at us, draining our power.. or.. or maybe suppressing it, but it only lasted till she was there, as soon as she left, we were fine." Alexia told the pair.
Merlin looked thoughtful before he turned and left the chambers.
"Where are you going?" Gaius asked.
"To see Arthur! He's our only hope!" Merlin replied as he exited.
"Merlin!" Alexia called but he was gone. She turned to Gaius.
"This won't turn out well." She said with a frown.
In Arthur's chambers, Arthur is wearing his jacket as he moved to the table. Merlin approached Arthur hesitantly before he opened his mouth to say something, but didn't. He repeated the process as he opened and closed his mouth and Arthur looked at him while sheathing his sword.
"Yes?" Arthur asked, prompting Merlin to continue.
"Arthur." Merlin started. "I'm going to tell you something. It's not going to be easy."
"Right..." Arthur siad uncertainly as he dressed himself.
"It concerns the Lady Catrina." Merlin mentioned.
"You're not using my chambers to spy on her again." Arthur asked with a small frown.
"Oh, no. Trust me, I saw everything I needed to see." Merlin said thinking about the troll.
"I'm sure you did." Arthur said shrugging.
"Arthur. She's a troll." Merlin finally confessed. But Arthur laughed at that. Merlin have him a look as Arthur turned to look at him.
"She's not that bad." Arthur said laughing.
"I'm serious. She is. She's an actual troll." Merlin warned.
"Merlin, I know what you're trying to do, and I appreciate it. You're a true friend. But it's not about whether I like her or not, it's about what makes my father happy. And when they announced the wedding today, I realised that Lady Catrina does just that. She makes him happy." Arthur stated looking at him.
"Well, he won't be so damn happy when he discovers his wife's a fruit munching monster." Merlin pointed aggressively.
"That's enough, Merlin." Arthur said loudly.
"But..."
"She's the future queen of Camelot whether you like it or not. So you better get used to it." Arthur warned leaving the room.
Alexia was rushing down the corridor towards the dungeons when suddenly she felt some banging in her head. And before she knew, dizziness took over and Alexia fainted on the spot. From behind, Catrina could be seen smirking as she moved towards the unconscious body.
Merlin was passing the upper corridor, dejected after his talk with Arthur when he suddenly he heard weeping.
"Hello?" He called moving to the source of voice only to find Jonas sitting curled up, weeping.
"Master Merlin. I'm sorry." Jonas apologized as he sniffed.
"What's wrong with you?" Merlin asked. The said man jerked upon his feet as he rushed to him checking around and turning back to Merlin.
"I'm a slave. A prisoner." Jonas whispered.
"What are you talking about?" Merlin asked, clearly confused.
"My mistress, she's not as she seems. But you know as much." Jonas replied pointing at him.
"Go on, I'm listening." Merlin was still cautious.
"She is a cruel, wicked creature. She keeps me in chains. She hurts me. Her magic, I-I can't escape it. She twists my mind as she is twisting the mind of your King." He told the warlock, showing his arms to the warlock.
"Why are you telling me this?" Merlin asked.
"I can help you." Jonas whispered, his face getting blank.
"How?" Merlin asked.
"Below the castle, where she sleeps, she keeps her potions there. Every night she must take these potions, it is the magic that transforms her from beast to beauty. If you were to take these from her, she must remain as a beast, and then your King would not be so keen, I think." Jonas told Merlin.
"Tell me, Jonas, why should I believe any of this?" Merlin asked the green-tailed creature.
"You must do as you think fit, Master Merlin, but if my mistress is not stopped, by morning she will be queen." Jonas said, aware as he hit the right cord.
At night, Merlin sneaked upto the troll's nest. He coughed as he entered due to the horrible stink, before finally moving inside and rushing to search for the potion, before his eyes fell on the body lying aside. Merlin frowned, standing up when suddenly he heard a raspy voice.
"You won't find anything in there. You may possess some magic, wretch, but you are no match for me." The troll snarled before she magically collapsed the tunnel entrance.
Merlin tried to get out, but failed as he was thrown back.
Gaius could be seen moving towards Merlin's and Alexia's chambers as he searched for them.
"Merlin? Alexia?" He called as he opened the door only to find two empty beds.
Merlin coughed as he tried to stand and move to the lying body, before turning it back to reveal Alexia. Merlin gasped as he tried to shake her awake.
"Alexia?" Merlin called, tapping her cheek, trying bring her back to consciousness.
He groaned seeing none of his attempts were getting successful. Turning to the blocked door, Merlin raised his hand and chanted.
" Ic ábíetee pæt stánhol. "
Nothing happened, resulting Merlin to groan at his bad luck.
The chant could be heard, all night, repeatedly as Merlin tried to break the wall and get free.
" Ic ábíetee pæt stánhol. " He chanted as a pulse exited his palm hitting the blocked wall but didn't effect it. Merlin turned to look at unconscious Alexia who was still asleep, her brown hair locks covering her face.
"Wake up Alexia, I need you." He murmured to himself before he turned back to the wall
In the guest room, Jonas was preparing the potion as the troll spoke up from behind.
"Jonas, have I ever looked more revolting?" Catrina asked as she appeared from behind dressed for her wedding.
"No, Mistress." Jonas said looking at her.
"Oh, Jonas. You always say the right thing." Catrina said laughing as she gulped her potion.
The throne room was being prepared for the wedding as two thrones were placed. The doors were opened as guests and knights started to enter the room.
In the troll's nest, Merlin stood there chanting again.
" Ic ábíetee pæt stánhol! " Merlin chanted as his eyes flashed gold and a pulse was emitter from his hand hitting the wall.
Uther and Arthur entered the throne room, dressed in their royal entire. everyone bowed as they passed them, before Arthur parted from his father and Uther stood at his place.
Merlin was getting tired, as he continued to chant, looking hopelessly at Alexia, who was still unconscious.
" Ic ábíetee pæt stánhol. " His eyes flashed gold as another pulse was sent to the wall.
Catrina arrived at the throne room, as she moved to the king. The pendent flashing red as Uther looked at her, totally besotted. The crowd bowed as she passed while Gaius looked at her gravely. She reached Uther who took her hand as both climbed the steps, standing infront of the thrones.
Merlin looked up determined as he raised his hand before yelling the spell, with his all power.
" Ic ábíetee pæt stánhol! "
The spell finally broke the wall and the entrance was unblocked. At the same, Alexia woke up, panting and gasping for the air. Merlin quickly ran to her before bending to her level.
"Alexia!"
"Merlin!" Alexia panted.
"We have to move quickly, the troll is marrying Uther." Merlin rushed.
"I.. I can't." Alexia panted, clearly showing it was difficult for her to even breathe.
"Go! Please... Just... Stay away... Stay away from that Jonas." She warned, trying to catch her breath. Merlin looked doubtful before he nodded and dashed out towards the wedding.
In the throne room, Geoffrey of Monmouth presided over the wedding ceremony.
"My lords, ladies, and gentlemen of Camelot, we are gathered here today to celebrate, by the ancient right of handfasting, the union of Uther Pendragon and Lady Catrina of Tregor." Geoffrey said.
Meanwhile, Merlin rushed through the corridor courtyard to reach the throne room, pushing many people out of his way.
"Is it your wish, Uther, to become one with this woman?" Geoffrey of Monmouth asked looking at auhur.
"It is." Uther replied looking awestruck as his gaze resided on Catrina.
"Is it your wish, Catrina, to become one with this man?"
"It is." Catrina said, smiling as finally her plans were succeeding.
"Do any say nay?" Geoffrey asked, addressing the audience. Gaius glanced at the door, expecting Merlin and Alexia.
Merlin dashed through the Red Ribbon Chamber to reach the throne room, but Jonas stepped in his way.
"Master Merlin, can I help you? Are you lost?" Jonas asked, mocking the warlock.
"Step aside, Jonas." Merlin warned rushing forward only to be blocked by Jonas.
"The King's wedding is by invitation only."
"I said, get out of my way!"Merlin yelled moving to the other side but Jonas grabbed his arm, twisting it.
"So sorry, but I regret to say, that you are not invited." He snarled pushing him as Merlin fell to the ground.
"With this garland, I do tie a knot, and by doing so, bind your hands and your hearts for all eternity." Geoffrey said tying the garland to the connected hands of Uther and Catrina.
In the corridor, Merlin quickly stood up and attack Jonas only to be flipped back by the said creature. Jonas moved to Merlin, before holding him from his collar and raising the young warlock in air.
"Leave my mistress alone!" Jonas yelled.
"I, Uther Pendragon, King of Camelot, I shall not seek to change thee in any way. I shall respect thee as I respect myself." Uther vowed.
Merlin kicked Jonas who stumbled back leaving Merlin to on the ground. Raising to his feet, Merlin brought out his hand infront of Jonas.
" Ic þé wiþdríf! " Merlin chanted as his eyes flashed gold and Jonas was thrown aside, as a vase fell on his head- knocking him unconscious- before he quickly rushed in.
"I now pronounce you to be husband and wife." Geoffrey announced and Merlin bursted in just as Uther and Catrina kissed. The court applauded in celebration. Catrina's eyes fell on the young warlock as a scowl took over her face. But Merlin could care less about the simple scowl as the damage was already done.
A/n: Okay so another a/n. In the starting of this chapter I told you that I was late and this chapter was a difficult. The reasons were promised to be told later on, and here I am to fulfill it.
Okay so for the delay in the chapter, as I announced in the previous chapter, I was at my cousin's house to enjoy for few days. And let me tell you, it was amazing. So, being there, I wasn't even able to write a single word, and chapter was a far-off thing. This even stopped me from planning the chapter as it was supposed to happen, thus becoming another cause of the delay.
Now moving to the another and the main part. This chapter was quite difficult to write. Why? Because I had to show like Alexia forgot many important incidents, as well as include her into the frame later on. It was because 'Beauty and the beast' chapter, specifically part 1, could be destroyed in a single second if anything was spoiled. Thus causing the content to shorten upto such extent, that a chapter which I planned for two parts, could have been finished in a single one. And I definitely didn't want it. So it was difficult to plot such a chapter, where for the first time, Alexia alone went to cure Gaius's patients ( which will definitely lead upto something in future ), after that she even forgot the major incidents. I have a reasonable explanation for that too, which will be showed in further episodes and we will see it, but this lead to less Alexia in this chapter ( I am actually pouting at that ). But I can assure you, next chapter will be a total bang and you will definitely like it. Especially those who requested for the good Morgana. Oops! Spoilers! But I believe it's Okay.
Now let's move to a challenge, I have already told you all about Morgana's involvement in next chapter, now it's upto you all to guess what it might be, or upto what extent will the Morgana-part go! The winner will get... well not anything in the physically, but I am going to tag the winner at the beginning of the chapter, congratulating them, because maybe that's the only thing I could do... so enjoy guys!!
