Hey everyone, here's chapter 3 of The Spectacular Spider-Vee. This chapter will show our girl testing out her powers. On with the chapter!
Vee stood in her room, looking at herself in the mirror. The other day was crazy. She had turned invisible and clung to walls. But the craziest thing was that she shot a web out of her body and took down a bigger guy in one shot. The latter was shocking since she had never been in a fight in her entire life. But she had to give the number one spot to shooting webs out of her body. That definitely wasn't normal. Her eyes already weren't normal, and these powers that she gained had made her even less so.
That being said, these spider powers were something that she decided to look into and test. If she were right, she got these from that spider that bit her. First thing to test: wall crawling.
Vee crouched to the floor then jumped up. She did a flip in midair, landing in a crouching stance on the ceiling. Vee then proceeded to crawl across the ceiling until she was above her bed. Vee relaxed, releasing her hold on the ceiling before doing another flip and landing on her bed. She had come to the conclusion that wall crawling was like regular crawling or walking. So long as she relaxed and remained calm, she could stick to walls whenever she liked.
Second thing to test: spider strength. Real spiders could lift several times their own weight. Super spiders could probably lift even more than that. Vee was human, so, if that power had been transferred to her then she could probably lift several tons. That was just a theory though.
To test out that theory, Vee hopped off her bed. She bent her knees, placing her hands underneath the bedframe. With amazingly little effort, she lifted her bed off the ground. She even managed to lift above her head. It was almost like she was lifting nothing. Carefully, Vee set the bed back down, back into its original position.
Lifting the bed was easy, but Vee wanted to test her strength with something a little heavier. Vee stepped out of her room, making her way downstairs and into the kitchen. She looked around, making sure her mom wasn't nearby watching. Vee walked over to the refrigerator, gripping it by the sides. Vee put a little more effort into this than she did with her bed, but she had managed to lift the bed as well. The refrigerator was heavier than her bed, but it didn't feel like it weighed that much either.
"Mija?" Vee heard her mom who was coming downstairs.
Vee yelped and quickly put the refrigerator down. Thinking fast, Vee reached into a refrigerator and pulled out a tub of strawberry cream cheese. Just in time too, because Camila had just stepped into the kitchen.
"Morning, Mom," Vee greeted her mother while closing the refrigerator door.
"I thought you'd be sleeping in. It is the weekend after all," Camila commented.
"Yeah, but I'm meeting up with my friends. Masha said something about having a surprise for me," Vee said while putting two halves of a bagel into the toaster.
Camila couldn't help but smile at what her daughter said. Spending time with friends. Due to her shy nature, Vee had always been kind of a loner. Back in Connecticut, she didn't really have any friends at all. But here in New York, she had made four friends in less than a week. Perhaps moving here really was a good thing.
"I could drive you if you want," Camila offered.
"Thanks, but I think I can manage on my own. I mean, I might as well get used to the city, right?" Vee shrugged as her bagel popped up.
"Oh. Yeah, I guess you're old enough to go out on your own," Camila said as Vee smeared the cream cheese onto her bagel, "Just be careful out there, and be sure to call if you're going to be late."
"Sí, Mama" Vee replied before taking a bite of her bagel.
Downtown…
The subway came to a stop, Vee stepping off at her destination. She had never ridden a train before, let alone one that rode underground. They were so fast. A little crowded in some carts, but convenient.
Vee climbed the steps out of the subway tunnel and back onto the sidewalk. She was amazed at what she saw. So many signs, stores, and skyscrapers. One of the skyscrapers even had an enormous broadcasting tv thing that showed the news. The Daily Bugle, it was called. Today's broadcast showed a white-haired figure running around at night in a cat costume. It was hard to make out due to the darkness and crappy camera, but it kind of looked like a female and kind of looked like she was dressed like… a cat?
"You'd love this, Luz…" Vee muttered to herself.
"Hey, Vee!" she heard someone call out to her. Vee turned her head and, across the street, were her friends.
A small smile appeared across Vee's face. She pressed the button on the crosswalk. The stoplights on her side went from red to green while the crosswalk light changed from a hand to a walking person. Vee raised her foot to cross the street, when she felt the tingling feeling around her head again.
…Stop…
Vee snapped her leg back to the sidewalk just before a taxi blazed past her, exactly where she would've stepped. Making sure the coast was clear, she safely walked across the street. That was the second time that that tingling feeling got her out of incoming danger. It was almost like she had a sixth sense. A spider sense.
"You ok, Vee?" Masha asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Vee replied, "So, what're we doing today?" she asked.
"Well, Beth and I decided we should help you build your confidence," Masha said.
"And what better way to build that confidence than…" Beth started.
"A makeover!" both sang.
Vee's eyes widened behind her sunglasses. Ok, she wasn't expecting that.
"So, then… why are the boys here?" Vee asked, pointing to the Lance and Vincent.
"Vincent dragged us to a planetarium a couple weeks ago," Beth told her.
"Yeah, and that bored the hell out of us, so he owes us," Masha said, knowing how much guys hated watching women clothes shop and doing beauty crap, "And Lance is here because… Wait, why are you here?" she/they looked at the chill guy of their friend group with a raised eyebrow.
"Because Vee helped me once…" Lance said in an almost vague tone.
[Flashback]
Vee and Lance sat beside each other in English class. They were about to work on their class assignment; however, Lance was unequipped.
"Hey, Vee do you have a pencil I can borrow?" Lance asked.
"Yeah," Vee reached into her backpack and pulled out an extra pencil, "Here you go."
"Thanks," Lance smiled while taking the writing utensil.
[End of Flashback]
"And now it's my turn to return the favor," Lance told them.
There was a short pause between them all.
"Uhh… right. Come on, Vee," Masha said, gesturing for the Dominican girl to follow and the others.
Two Hours Later…
The four friends were just outside of the changing room. Beth and Masha stood excitedly while Vincent and Lance were sitting down, bored out of their minds. They just finished their time at the hair salon, and now they were waiting for Vee to finish changing into the selection of clothes they gave her.
"You done in there, Vee?" Masha called from outside the changing room.
"Yeah, just about," Vee replied.
"Well, let's see what you look like," Beth insisted.
"I don't know. This outfit is kind of embarrassing," Vee said, a hint of nervousness in her voice.
"Girl, just let us see," Masha said with a roll of her/their eyes.
The four friends heard a sigh. Vee stepped out, wearing her new outfit. She now sported a magenta, off the shoulder, long sleeve shirt with black sleeves. She wore blue skinny jeans underneath a black skirt with a studded belt. She now wore magenta boots with black soles, straps, and a black tongue, the boots stopping at her calves. The tips of the back of her hair had been dyed teal to go with her already dyed blonde hair. Her hairclips had been removed, giving her hair a slightly messy but somehow still neat sort of look.
The four friends looked between each other.
"I like it," Beth smiled.
"Me too," Masha agreed.
"She's pretty," Vincent commented.
Everyone turned to Lance for his response. Lance pulled out a whistle in the shape of a wolf's head. He blew into it, making the sound of a wolf whistle from those old timey cartoons. That made Vee's cheeks turn red.
"It could use a little something though…" Masha while walking up to Vee.
Out of one of her/their skirt pockets, Masha pulled out a spare choker, placing it around Vee's neck. Masha rubbed her/their chin. It was better, but Vee's could still use something. Masha pushed Vee back into the changing room, this time going in with her.
"Take off your sunglasses," Masha told Vee.
At Masha's request, Vee removed her sunglasses, now showing her unique eyes. Masha reached into her/their other skirt pocket and pulled out small, compact makeup kit. Grabbing the large brush, Masha dabbed into one of the many colors of eyeshadow.
"Close your eyes," Masha told Vee.
Vee closed her eyes, allowing Masha to apply amethyst-colored eyeshadow to her eyes. Once she/they were done, Masha put her makeup kit away. The two of them then stepped out of the changing room, Masha then gesturing to their friends to the new Vee Noceda.
"Perfect!" the other three friends said in supportive unison.
"What do you think, Vee?" Masha asked, wanting to hear the opinion of the girl that the makeover was for.
"It… it feels kind of nice. It's kind of like I've been reborn," Vee admitted, her cheeks once again heating up with embarrassment, "Thanks, guys."
"Eh, it was our pleasure," Beth smiled with a small shrug.
"Yeah, we've got your back, girl," Masha said, placing a hand on Vee's shoulder.
Vee couldn't help but smile at their kindness. So, this is what it felt like to have friends.
Vee's House…
After a few hours of spending time with her friends, Vee had returned home via train, followed by the bus. Luckily for her, the bus stop wasn't too far from her house. Vee walked inside with a bag of her old clothes, and was greeted by the scent of chocolate coming from the kitchen. She stepped into the kitchen and saw her mom placing freshly baked chocolate chip cookies on a plate. Vee knocked gently on the wall.
"Hola, mami. I'm back," Vee said, a small bit of nervousness in her voice.
"Oh, did you have fun with your frie—" Camila paused upon turning around. "Vee?"
"Yeah. My friends decided to give me a makeover… to help me boost my confidence…" Vee said, placing her bag down and removing her sunglasses, "What do you think?"
Camila walked up to her daughter. She paced around Vee, taking in the girl's new appearance. Camila stopped when the pacing circle was complete.
"You dyed your tips," Camila noted, gently running her fingers through the back of Vee's hair.
"Yeah," Vee replied, and then looked away, "You hate it, don't you?" she asked, holding her arm.
"Actually," Camila pulled Vee in and held her, "I love it. It's the new you," she told her, her daughter smiling back at her, "Just don't let this new look go to your head. I'd hate for you to be like those girls that start off sweet but then get makeovers and become total putas."
"No te preocupes, Mamá. That's not going to happen to me," Vee reassured. Camila responded by planting a kiss upon her daughter's forehead.
"Bueno," Camila said, "You know, your new look is almost perfect. It just needs one thing…" she told Vee, booping her nose.
Camila stepped out of the kitchen and ran upstairs. In a few minutes, she came back, holding a small, black box in one of her hands. She then took one of Vee's hands and placed it. Vee opened the box, her eyes widening upon what she saw within it.
"T-These… These are…" Vee looked at her mother.
"Mm-hm," Camila nodded.
There they were, in the box. Luz's earrings.
"Mom, I can't take these. They're Luz's," Vee closed the box, trying to hand it back to her mother.
"Baby, trust me. Your sister would've wanted you to have them," Camila reassured, gently pushing the box back to Vee.
Vee looked at the box again. Luz's earrings, one of the last personal items they had to remember her by. Did Luz really want Vee to have them? Vee had mixed feelings about this. On one hand, it was a nice gesture. But on the other…
"I… I don't know…" Vee said.
Camila looked into her daughter's eyes. Clearly, she still felt guilty over what happened to her twin. In truth, they were both still grieving inside. There were times where they had both cried themselves to sleep. It wasn't as bad as the day they lost Luz and the weeks following it, but the pain was still there.
"Look, you don't have to wear them if you don't want to, but… at least hold on to them?" Camila suggested, placing a hand on Vee's shoulder.
"Heh. Sure, Mom," Vee smirked faintly before taking her bag, walking past her mom and making her way upstairs.
Vee closed her bedroom door behind her. She walked over to closet, placing her old clothes on a hanger and back on the rack. Vee then walked over to her underwear drawer. The bottom contained her socks, the third contained her panties, the second contained her bras, and the top just contained various items. Opening the top drawer, she placed the box containing her sister's earrings inside.
Before closing it though, she glanced slightly to her right and saw a sketchbook. Vee took the sketchbook and flipped through the pages of various sketches. Some were hers while others were Luz's. As twins, they shared a lot of things. She hadn't seen these in some time. Vee then fell on to a certain page in particular.
"Oh, yeah. I remember this…" Vee muttered.
[Flashback]
The Noceda twins sat on the couch, a sketchbook between them. The sketchbook was on a page that showed an outfit for someone. A while back, the girls had the idea to work together to create their own story. It was combination of Luz's love of fantasy/magic and Vee's love of sci-fi. Their main character wore an outfit that would symbolize that.
"I think it's coming together quite nicely," Luz said, her hands on her hips.
"Yeah. It has a nice balance of both fantasy and sci-fi," Vee commented.
"I can't wait until we actually start making this and finish our story," Luz smiled, "I call dibs on wearing it first!" she quickly chimed, making Vee chuckle.
[End of Flashback]
"We finished our design. It's too bad we never got the chance to bring it to life…" Vee said to herself, sitting on the edge of her bed as stared down at the finished sketch she and her sister worked on.
A thought then came to Vee's mind. She had tested her powers earlier. She had tested her spider strength, spider-sense, and wall-crawling. The only ones she hadn't tested yet were invisibility and web shooting. Vee looked out the window. There was still time in the day. It was early in the afternoon, but there was still time.
A few minutes later, Vee stepped downstairs while wearing her hoodie over her new top.
"Going back outside, mija?" Camila asked from the couch.
"Yeah, I'm just going to go pick some stuff up. I just got the idea for a new project, and I need to go get some supplies," Vee replied taking a cookie from the plate.
"Well, could you pick up some eggs while you're out?" Camila asked, handing her a 50-dollar bill.
"Uh, sure," Vee said, taking the money and placing it in her pants pocket.
"Use whatever's left for your supplies. And be sure to call if you get into trouble," Camila told her.
"I will, Mom. Be back later," Vee said, taking a bit of her cookie as she walked out.
Downtown…
Vee stood on the roof of an abandoned apartment complex. It wasn't as high as a skyscraper, but it was still high enough to get a bird's eye view of cars passing by on the street. Vee zipped up her hoodie. To make sure no one noticed her if she got on the news, she placed ski mask over her face, followed by her sunglasses and putting her hood on over her head.
"Ok… how did I do this the other day?" Vee asked herself, looking at her right hand.
Vee extended her right arm, lightly curling her middle and ring fingers inward while flicking her wrist. This shot out a small string of web that flew across the street. Vee inhaled deeply. She then aimed at the roof of a building on the other side of the street.
She repeated the action again, this time making sure the tips of her fingers touched the base of her palm. This shot out a web that was far longer than the previous one. This one was long enough to connect to the ledge of the roof on the other side of the street. Vee then placed the other end on the ledge of the roof she was on.
Vee inhaled deeply through her nose and exhaled through her mouth. Slowly, she started walking her web like a tightrope, her spread out to keep her balanced. All she had to do was not wobble too much on either side or misstep and—
"Whoa!" Vee yelped, having lost her footing. As she fell, her spider sense went off.
…swing…
Vee threw out one of her arms and shot out a web that clung to the corner of a roof of a far building diagonally from her. She thrusted her pelvis, causing herself to swing.
"Woo-hoo!" Vee cheered as she practically flew through the air.
Once at a high enough momentum, Vee released her web. She shot out another web, swinging from it just as she did before. Swinging through the air like this, it was kind of a rush. This was fun. Not only was it fun, but it was faster and more efficient than taking the bus or riding in a taxi, the latter of which she's never done and, thanks to this, she'd never have to. This also meant she'd probably never have to ask her mom for a ride anywhere ever again either.
After a few good swings, Vee released her web, doing a backward roll through the air into an alley. She landed on the wall of a building. Vee jumped off with a flip, landing perfectly on her feet.
"Alright, testing out the webs was easier than I thought. Although, I wasn't expecting to use them to swing through the air. We'll just call that a happy accident," Vee told herself.
Ok, Vee's officially tested out her powers, except for one. Invisibility. She knew a lot of animals camouflaged themselves to hide from predators. How was she supposed to trigger that power on command? If she remembered correctly, her invisibility was triggered when she was scared of what Amanda would do to her after spilling food on her.
"Eh, I'll try to figure out the invisibility power later," Vee muttered to herself with a shrug.
As she came out of the alleyway, Vee noticed she was right beside a fashion supply store. Vee thought back to the sketch of the outfit she and Luz worked on. Even though they never got the chance to make their character's outfit together, that didn't mean the outfit couldn't be made at all. Plus, Vee did tell her mom that she was picking up supplies for a new project…
Vee removed her sunglasses and ski mask then entered the supply store.
"I can't believe all this fabric was on sale," Vee said, carrying a few rolls of fabric under her arm, "And I still have enough to get mom's eggs," she added.
Vee was close to the bus stop she used earlier to get home. With the time it took waiting for the bus and subway to get there, and the same time it took to get back, by the time she returned to the same bus stop, the sun was halfway gone. Luckily for her, she had already notified her mom that she was on her way back.
Vee was across the street from a bar, when she saw someone, a man, step out of said bar in a drunken manner. The drunken man in question walked over wobbly to his car and got into the driver's seat. Seeing this made Vee growl, her eyes narrowed. She didn't exactly have a good experience the last time she heard about a drunk driver. To say she hated drunk driving was an understatement.
Meanwhile, the intoxicated driver was swerving along the street. The windows were open to let the cool air in and keep him awake. The man, in his drunken state, thought he was ok enough to drive and get himself home. He was wrong about that and was about to be proven just how wrong. There was a hard thump on the roof of the car.
"What the hell?" the man looked up with confusion.
"Nice night for a drive, eh?" the driver turned his head to see a masked person with sunglasses sitting in the passenger's seat.
"Hey, who… *hic*… who are you?" the man asked.
"The one that's going to give you a lesson on driving drunk," Vee said sternly, firing several webs that completely immobilized the driver, "Driving while intoxicated is not only stupid, but it's incredibly dangerous. You could get yourself killed… or someone else," Vee said, muttering that last part under her breath.
"Hey, what's with that cat-dog thing? How, h-h-how does it poop, like, poop and stuff? And what if they want to marry different people? You've got a law suit on your hands there," the man said in a drunken stupor, not listening to word of what the girl said.
Vee growled. Ok, talking clearly didn't work. Looks like this was one of those moments where actions would have to speak louder than words. Vee aimed her wrist and shot an impact web at the driver's foot, causing him to put more force on the gas pedal and the car to accelerate. Vee then quickly hopped out of the passenger's seat through the open window, flipping back onto the roof of the car.
Vee then crawled over to the driver's side and shot a web at the wheel from both wrists. With a hard yank, Vee made the wheel turn, causing the car to turn sharply. This in turn caused the car to roll into the air in a counterclockwise direction. Before it could crush her, Vee jumped off the roof of the car. With a backwards roll through the air, Vee landed on top of a street light. Vee watched as the car tumbled several times along the ground. It only ceased once the car crashed on the driver's side into a large tree.
"Oof. That's rough. Part of me wonders if he's ok…" Vee muttered with a wince.
"I'm ok!" the drunk driver shouted from his now steaming car, "There's a sharp pain shooting through my body, but I-I-I… I'm ok!"
Vee sighed while rubbing her forehead.
"Well, that was certainly something," a new voice said from behind her.
"Huh?" Vee turned around and saw someone looking down at her from the roof of the building behind her, their arms folded with a smug expression.
It was a female wearing a black suit that nicely hugged her figure. The suit was zipped up to her chest, allowing her cleavage to show. She wore white gloves that stopped at the forearms, white fur lining the cuffs. She wore white boots with navy blue soles, the heels of the boots having a small height to it. She wore a white belt with a silver buckle in the shape of a cat head. To top the look off, she wore a thin, black masquerade mask, a spiked black choker, and a pair of fake black cat ears perched on her head.
She had short hair that was as white as snow. The funny thing was, she seemed to be around the same age as Vee.
"Hey," Vee leaped from the street light and on to the roof where the cat lady was standing, "You're that cat girl I've heard about. The one that was on the news."
"They call me the Black Cat," the cat lady introduced herself, her voice sounding kind of sexy.
"Ok, Black Cat, how much did you see?" Vee asked.
"Just from when you crawled out of the window and onward," Black Cat said with a small shrug, "If your intention was to kill that guy, then you failed."
"No, let's just say I was teaching him a lesson. I wasn't expecting it to go that far though…" Vee said, rubbing her arm with shame.
"Hmm. Tell me, what do you plan to do with your powers?" Black Cat asked.
"Huh?" Vee looked at her.
"Your powers. What're you going to do with them?" Black Cat asked again.
An interesting question. Vee had just gotten these powers a few days ago, she never really thought about it until now. She then remembered something that her dad and Luz always told her. If someone has power, they have to be responsible with it. In other words, with great power comes great responsibility.
"I don't know, but… I guess I'd use them to help people?" Vee replied though still unsure.
"Good, because if you used them for crime, I'd have to do what cats do and swat you like the spider you are," Black Cat said in a half playful tone, pointing a finger at the girl, the fingers of her gloves having cat-like claws.
Black Cat then pulled out a handheld notebook and pen then wrote something down.
"Here," Black Cat handed Vee the note, "Meet me at the roof of that address tomorrow around 10 in the morning. It's an abandoned building, so it's perfect for a meetup."
"Uh… ok," Vee said, looking at the note with a raised eyebrow.
"Great! See you around, Spider-Girl," Black Cat winked at her before running off on all fours, doing leaps and flips across rooftops.
Vee stood there for a moment.
"…Spider-Girl?" Vee repeated, "Ugh. I'd better go get mom's eggs."
Vee extended her arm and shot a web, swinging back to where she left her fabric. Spider-Girl. That got Vee thinking. Maybe she could make a few minor edits to the outfit.
And that's the end of this chapter. I had a little help with chapter from I Write Big.
The new look I gave Vee will be the look she uses from here on out. She still looks like Luz, but also has some features of her new look from the show.
And yeah, I introduced the Black Cat extremely early. I have my reasons for doing that. Expect her to be a recurring character in this story.
