Growing up, the Evans sisters had been quite close.

Lily and Petunia had loved each other with all their hearts and their bond was as strong as steel.

But recently, there had been a serious threat to the relationship between the Evans sisters.

Lily had got an acceptance letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and had proven to have magical powers.

Petunia, desperate to learn magic herself, had written to Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore requesting that Hogwarts take her too.

Dumbledore had replied to Petunia with a letter explaining that witches were born and not made. It was nature rather than nurture.

Embittered, Petunia began to feel jealous of her sister.

This was, of course, completely understandable, what tween or teen muggle wouldn't be jealous of a magical sibling.

The observant Lily had noticed that Petunia had become distant from her ever since her dreams of being magical had been shattered.

If the strong bond between the Evans sisters was to be saved, Lily knew she had to be proactive in doing so.

The Sunday morning before Lily was to go off to Hogwarts for the first time, a sad Petunia was sitting in her bedroom at her desk chair just being miserable when she heard a knock on her bedroom door.

"Who is it?" asked Petunia simply.

"Tuney, it's me, Lily, " said Lily in a kind and quiet voice, "May I please come in?"

"I suppose, " said Petunia stiffly.

Lily cautiously entered the room and helped herself to Petunia's second desk chair.

"Petunia, " said Lily seriously, "We need to talk."

Petunia nodded, though the expression on her face gave of an aura of "Why are you bugging me, bitch?"

"Petunia, look, I've noticed that you've become distant from me lately. I know you're jealous of my magic and I don't blame you because if our roles were reversed, I'd be jealous too."

Petunia's eyes met Lily's and she could tell that Lily understood.

"Tuney, we've been as much friends as sisters all our lives, " said Lily warmly.

Petunia actually smiled at hearing Lily call her "Tuney" Tuney was the nickname Lily had long called Petunia by when expressing affection.

"Tuney, my heart strongly desires that we retain our bond. In order to achieve that, your jealousy of my magic must be kept at bay. I can do my part by not flaunting my magic in front of you. As for you, what you need is to find a special skill or talent that you can be proud of for yourself. It obviously won't be magic, but it can be something else," explained Lily.

"Like what?" asked Petunia hopefully.

"You need to discover that for yourself by trying things out, " answered Lily seriously, "Maybe it's cooking, maybe it's modeling, maybe it's graphic design. The point is that you need to find and discover your own special talent that will allow you to stand out and find your place in the world. For me, that was magic, for you it'll be something else."

"Are you sure there's something for me?" asked Petunia.

"I know there is, " said Lily confidently, "You just need to unearth it for yourself."

After a period of silence that lasted a minute and a nanosecond, Petunia broke down crying and then embraced Lily.

"L-Lily I'm so sorry," sobbed Petunia, "I know you haven't done anything wrong. I just couldn't cope with you getting what I wanted."

"I understand, " said Lily patiently, "But I came to you because our sisterly bond is very important to me. It's too sacred to lose. "

Lily and Petunia remained hugging for a few minutes before breaking apart and smiling at each other.

Their bond had been saved.

I've always felt Liy was just as responsible as Petunia for the Evan's sisters falling out. She may not have asked for extra attention from her parents but she definitely lapped it up and she did flaunt her magic in front of Petunia. She also never anything to reassure Petunia nor did she make an attempt to repair their relationship. I also can't fault Petunia for her jealousy. She's just being the tween/teen human that she is. She did overact on her jealousy but again, Lily was also at fault.
