It was the evening of Tuesday, September 1st, 1987, and Percy Weasley had just had the Hogwarts Sorting Hat placed upon his head.

"Well, " said a voice in Percy's ears, "This a very interesting case. Indeed, you, Weasley, are easily the most interesting case of the decade."

Percy listened intently, wanting to take in every word the Sorting Hat would have to say to or about him.

"All previous Weasleys ever known to exist have been Gryffindors, " said the voice in Percy's ears.

This was true. There had never been a Weasley who wasn't a Gryffindor before.

"But you are different, " continued the voice of the Sorting Hat.

Percy nodded; this was exactly what he wanted to hear.

"You strive to be something more, to really achieve something," recognized the Sorting Hat.

"I want to be a prefect. I want to become Head Boy. I want to grow up to serve an important role in the Ministry of Magic, " Percy thought to himself.

"You have elements, " explained the Sorting Hat, "Of multiple houses. You are hardworking enough for Hufflepuff, though it's questionable if you have the loyalty qualities necessary to be a badger."

Percy shook his head. He wasn't feeling the Hufflepuff vibe. The Sorting Hat sensed this in Percy and confirmed it.

"No, Weasley, you are not destined for the yellow and black. I do sense that you are academically inclined, " the Sorting Hat told Percy.

"Ravenclaw definitely sounds better than Hufflepuff, " thought Percy, "I wouldn't mind being with other studious kids in my year. Maybe Ravenclaw is for me."

"You are closer to being a Ravenclaw than to being a Hufflepuff, " explained the Sorting Hat to Percy, "Yet you are not a true eagle. True Ravenclaws are creative, think outside the box, and value learning for its own sake. This is NOT you, Weasley. Your motivation to learn stems for a desire to attain knowledge for practical use. You wish to get the best education you can so that you can find yourself in an influential position when you grow up. You also have a thirst to prove yourself. "

Percy nodded silently, not disagreeing with the Sorting Hat's assessment of him.

"However, " mused the Sorting Hat, "You desire a life beyond the ordinary. You wish to prove yourself. You wish to make something of yourself. You wish to be an influential figure. In other words. you are very ambitious."

"YES!" screamed Percy in his own mind, "Ambition is the thing that really defines me."

"Exactly, Weasley, exactly, " confirmed the Sorting Hat, 'On a scale of one to ten, your level of ambition is a ten, Therefore, it is only fitting that you shall go into the house of the ambitious. You are henceforth a-"

"SLYTHERIN!" shouted the Sorting Hat out loud.

Percy carefully removed the Sorting Hat from his head, placed it down on the stool, and went to join the Slytherin table. Percy Weasley had found his place in Hogwarts.

I always thought canon Percy belonged in Slytherin. He was definitely very ambitious.
